Moon River and Me: A Memoir by Andy Williams (£19.00)Publisher: Weidenfeld & Nicolson — 2009Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0297856391]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Price Clipped. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs;

From the cover: “Andy Williams is one of the greatest singing stars of all time. During a glittering career spanning eight decades, he has headlined at concert venues in almost every city on the planet, sold over 100 million albums, hosted a hugely successful TV show and worked with a roll-call of showbusiness legends that included Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, Lauren Bacall, Jack Lemmon, Elvis Presley and John Lennon. His television show also introduced stars of the next generation, like the Osmonds and Elton John.

Now, for the first time, Andy tells the whole remarkable story. An Iowa farm boy who grew up during the Great Depression — so poor he had to sing for his shoes Andy began performing at the age of seven as one quarter of the Williams Brothers. They graduated from church halls and a funeral parlour to mid-Western radio stations, and found fame in Hollywood movies and a headlining nightclub act that was the sensation of its era.

After going solo, Andy endured his wilderness years, barely scraping a living in ‘rust-belt’ supper clubs — to re-emerge as one of the greatest television and recording stars of his era. The Andy Williams Show topped television ratings around the world, and a string of smash hits, including his signature tune ‘Moon River’, went on to earn him eighteen gold and three platinum discs.

Still singing, still holding audiences in the palm of his hand, Andy Williams looks back on an extraordinary show business life. Revelatory, honest, funny and touching, Moon River and Me is the inspiring autobiography of an icon.”

The Story of Country Music by Colin Escott (£19.00)Publisher: British Broadcasting Corporation [B.B.C./BBC] — 2003Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0563488204]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “Country music is the most popular music in the world today, but for many people it is much more than that. It’s the embodiment of America: a celebration and a soundtrack.

Tracing country music’s origins from the Anglo-Celtic immigrants who adapted their native folk songs to the life they found in the southeastern United States, Colin Escott weaves a warm and fascinating account of a music that continues to reflect people and places throughout America’s heartland. Once it chronicled the hardships and dreams of poor, uneducated Southerners, but now country music deals with the universal problems of modern life and love, problems often reflected in the lives of the performers themselves.

The influence of country music can be heard everywhere today, nowhere more than in contemporary rock music. And country music in all its forms is the subject of this book, which charts the music’s development from smalltime back-porch performances on homemade instruments, through the earliest recordings, the honky-tonk era, and now stadium concerts. Combining rare and unpublished photographs with exclusive interviews from country’s greatest singers, musicians, and songwriters, The Story of Country Music reveals how hillbilly music became the authentic voice of a nation and won hearts around the world.”

Venice: A Thousand Years of Culture and Civilization by Peter Lauritzen (£19.00)Publisher: Weidenfeld & Nicholson — 1978Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0297774476]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper with a short tear to both head and foot of the upper panel and slight fraying at the head of the spine. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding. Previous owners' inscription to the half-title page with a pasted in gift-card facing. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs;

From the cover: “Venice is one of the world’s most magical and enchanting visual experiences. Other cities may be built on islands, linked by canals and have a rich cultural heritage, but there is only one Venice: her pervasive atmosphere, her peace and her serene beauty seem to set her apart not only from other cities but from the contemporary world.

In this book Peter Lauritzen recounts the rich history and evokes the extraordinary atmosphere of the thousand-year Republic which gave birth to so much beauty. Against the background of the Republic’s rise from a lagoon settlement to a great imperial power, her decay and her collapse in 1797, the author describes the works of the men of genius — artists such as Giovanni and Gentile Bellini, Canaletto, Rosalba Carriera, Giorgione, Tiepolo, Tintoretto and Titian; architects such as Longhena, Palladio, Sanmichele and Sansovino; musicians such as Vivaldi and Monteverdi — who together created one of the great cultures of the western world. The history of this supremely visual civilization is completed by photographs of the treasures which crowd this most beautiful and photogenic of cities.”

Aaron Copland and His World by Edited by Carol J. Oja & Judith Tick (£17.00)Publisher: Princeton & Oxford: Princeton University Press — 2005Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 9780691124704]Condition: Very Good. Upper wrapper slighty curled. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Contains: Black & white photographs; Facsimiles; Musical scores;

From the cover: “Aaron Copland and His World reassesses the legacy of one of America’s best-loved composers at a pivotal moment — as his life and work shift from the realm of personal memory to that of history. This collection of seventeen essays by distinguished scholars of American music explores the stages of cultural change on which Copland’s long life (1900-1990) unfolded: from the modernist experiments of the 1920s, through the progressive populism of the Great Depression and the urgencies of World War II, to post-war political backlash and the rise of serialism in the 1950s and the widespread cultural turbulence of the 1960s.

Continually responding to an ever-changing political and cultural panorama, Copland kept a firm focus on both his private muse and the public he served. No self-absorbed recluse, he was very much a public figure who devoted his career to building support systems that would help composers function pro-ductively in America. This book offers multiple critiques on Copland’s role in these shifting contexts.

The contributors include music historians long associated with Copland scholarship such as Vivian Perlis, Howard Pollack, and Larry Starr, as well as newer voices to Copland, among them Elliott Antokoletz, Leon Botstein, and Martin Brody. The book also gives voice to younger scholars: Emily Abrams, Paul Anderson, Elizabeth Crist, Melissa de Graaf, Neil Lerner, and Beth Levy. And it offers interdisciplinary essays by the dance scholar Lynn Garafola, the art historian Gail Levin, and the cultural historian Morris Dickstein.

The topics range from Copland’s role in shaping an American school of modern dance to his relationship with Leonard Bernstein; his homosexuality, especially as influenced by the writings of Andre Gide; and theoretical explorations of cultural nationalism. Copland’s rich correspondence with the composer and critic Arthur Berger, who set the parameters of Copland’s reception for much of the composer’s lifetime, is published here in its entirety, edited by Wayne Shirley.”

Ray Charles: The Birth of Soul by Mike Evans (£17.00)Publisher: London, New York, Paris, Sydney, Copenhagen, Berlin, Madrid & Tokyo: Omnibus Press — 2005Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 184449764X]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper.Description: Appendices [4]; Black & White Photographs;

From the cover: “For a generation of musicians and fans, the late Ray Charles provided the catalyst that fused the previously largely exclusive genres of jazz, blues and gospel music. In an era when jazz and pop music were seemingly poles apart, the impact of Charles’ music was truly revolutionary in that it brought together these strands and fans for the first time.

This book traces Ray Charles’ amazing story from the abject disadvantage of being orphaned, black and blind in the South of the 1930s to the height of international success. Features exclusive first hand interviews and quotes from those who worked with, or were simply influenced by, the man who more than anyone else could truly be called the founding father of soul music.”

I Am Ozzy by Ozzy Osbourne with Chris Ayres (£14.00)Publisher: Sphere — 2009Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 184744346X]Condition: Very Good — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Top edge of the dust wrapper is a little ruffled with a scuff midway to the spine. Text complete, clean and tight. A pleasant copy. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “People ask me how come I’m still alive, and I don’t know what to say. When I was growing up, if you’d have put me up against a wall with the other kids from my street and asked me which one of us was gonna make it to the age of sixty, which one of us would end up with five kids and four grandkids and houses in Buckinghamshire and California, I wouldn’t have put money on me, no P**ing way. But here I am: ready to tell my story, in my own words, for the first time.

Every day of my life has been an event. I took lethal combinations of booze and drugs for thirty years. I survived a direct hit by a plane, suicidal overdoses, STDs. I’ve been accused of attempted murder. Then I almost died while riding over a bump on a quad bike at two miles per hour.

A lot of it ain’t gonna be pretty. I’ve done some bad things in my time. I’ve always been drawn to the dark side, me. But I ain’t the devil. I’m just John Osbourne: a working-class kid from Aston, who quit his job in the factory and went looking for a good time.”

A Garden of Eden in Hell: The Life of Alice Herz-Sommer by Melissa Mu¨ller & Reinhard Piechocki (£13.50)Publisher: London: Macmillan — 2007Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0230528023]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Musical scores; Portrait to the frontispiece; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “Alice Herz-Sommer was born in 1903 in Prague, the Prague of the Hapsburgs and of Franz Kafka, a family friend. Musically very gifted, by her mid-teens Alice was one of the best-known pianists in Prague. But as the Nazis swept across Europe, her comfortable, bourgeois world began to crumble around her, as anti-Jewish feeling not only intensified but was legitimised.

In 1942, Alice’s mother was deported. Desperately unhappy, she resolved to learn Chopin’s 24 Etudes — the most technically demanding piano pieces she knew — and the complex but beautiful music saved her sanity. A year later, she, too — together with her husband and their six-year-old son — was deported to a concentration camp. But even in Theresienstadt, music was her salvation and in the course of more than a hundred concerts she gave her fellow-prisoners hope in a world of pain and death.

This is her remarkable story, but it is also the story of a mother’s struggle to create a happy childhood for her beloved only son in the midst of atrocity and barbarism. Of 15,000 children sent to the camp, Raphael was one of the 130 who survived. Today, Alice Herz-Sommer lives in London and she still plays the piano every day.”

Louis: The Louis Armstrong Story by Max Jones; John Chilton; (£13.50)Publisher: Little, Brown & Co. — 1971Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0289702151]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper has a short, tidy, closed tear at the tail of the spine. Very light spotting to start and finish otherwise a very well presented copy.Description: First U.S. Edition. Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “For nearly half a century Louis Armstrong’s name spelled magic to millions of people throughout the world. A titan who towered over the first fifty years of jazz history. Louis — or Satchmo in the affections of his vast international audiences — was not only the single most popular figure in American music; he was also the most influential of all jazzmen. Yet so powerful were his talents and his personality that he transcended jazz to influence the entire field of Western popular music; his expressive features, his short dynamic figure, his glittering trumpet tone, above all, perhaps, his abrasive voice, were familiar to film-goers, television-watchers and concert patrons from Toulouse to Tokyo.

Millions of words have been written or spoken about him — in books, magazines and newspapers, on radio, film and television. In spite of them all, strangely little is still really known about him. What was the truth about his background and early life? How did the ‘Ambassador of Jazz’ regard his role in music and society? What was he like off-stage — the private man away from his trumpet and the constant spotlights?

Louis answers these questions. Answers them more fully and frankly than any other book has ever done or will be able to do. Because for Louis himself it was the authorised biography, written with his complete co-operation and trust by a man who had been his close friend for thirty years. ‘Yeah, I’m gonna tell it all to Max Jones’, as he said on the David Frost show, ‘for the first time — the way it really was’.

The story of the way it really was began in the toughest of New Orleans’s black ghettoes. Born even poorer, growing up even more deprived than most of his black American contemporaries in the South, Louis Armstrong went further and lasted longer than any of them. In a career which spanned more than five decades of professional playing — first in his home town, then following the path taken by jazz as it moved to new capitals in Chicago, New York, the West Coast and finally to Europe — Louis played a decisive role in bringing American jazz to maturity and spreading it round the globe.”

From the cover: “Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in 1756, a time when the rationalism of the Age of Reason was beginning to challenge the High Baroque style.

By the time he died, a mere thirty-five years later, the French Revolution had shaken the certainties of his world, and the new emphasis on the individual heralded the dawn of the Romantic era. In that period Mozart developed from a child prodigy who trotted round the courts and capitals of Europe into the composer whose music, and not least his operas, have become enduring masterpieces.

This book looks at the man and the operas, concentrating on the five great works from Idomeneo to The Magic Flute.”

Wet Wet Wet: Pictured by Simon Fowler (£12.50)Publisher: Virgin — 1995Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1852275332]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper.Description: Illustrated with colour photographs. From the cover: “After the phenomenal success of Love Is All Around, fifteen weeks at number one and the best-selling single for a decade, the Wets went out on the road with their stunning All Around And In The Crowd show throughout the spring and summer of 1995.

For the first time, the band allowed a photographer exclusive and uninhibited access on tour. Simon Fowler, one of the best music photographers in the business, accompanied them on their travels in Europe.

He took full advantage, shooting photos onstage, backstage and offstage — even dangling high above the catwalk that dramatically descended from the rafters to let the band race over the heads of the audience. Wet Wet Wet — Pictured combines the most spectacular and most intimate of the shots that emerged, in a blend of vibrant colour and powerful black and whites.

The Wets also talk to writer Mal Peachey about being a band of musicians, close friends and strong personalities. Graeme on his own love affair with music and the influences in their early days. Marti on working with the greats of soul music, and on defying the critics. Neil on being ‘the quiet one’ and helping each other. Tommy on juggling a private life with the strenuous demands of being on tour for five months.

We meet the fifth Wet, guitarist Graeme Duffin, and the band’s stage crew, including a guided tour backstage in the company of tireless road manager Dougie Souness: the success of Wet Wet Wet is all to do with teamwork.

So here it is. Wet Wet Wet — Pictured: the first and only official book on the band. A glorious record of a spectacular tour. A window into life on the road. And an insight to the way they really are.”

Ancients and Moderns: William Crotch and The Development of Classical Music by Howard Irving (£11.50)Publisher: Aldershot: Ashgate — 1999Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1840146044]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: From the cover: “The improvement of modem music, since the period usually assigned to its lowest stage of decline, is indescribably great; and the general advancement of the public taste in this country, and especially in this metropolis, since the commencement of the present century, clearly is perceptible.

In this manner, William Crotch, Heather Professor of Music at Oxford University, began one of his popular lecture series at the Surrey Institution in 1818. Crotch’s opening lecture continues with one of the most extensive and candid accounts by an eyewitness of a bitter and protracted quarrel between partisans supporting ancient and modern music. The ancient-modern quarrel, Crotch maintains, began perhaps as early as the late seventeenth century, and reached a resolution — one might better say, detente — in the second decade of the nineteenth century. On the surface, the debate appeared to be a straightforward argument over the merits of old and new music. As Crotch’s lectures indicate, however, the issues went much deeper and involved the question — crucial for music’s developing classical tradition — of whether the art should be regarded as a mere gratification of the sense of hearing or an intellectual art form.

In Part I of this book, Howard Irving details Crotch’s lecturing career and examines the influences of figures such as Charles Burney and Sir Joshua Reynolds on his approach to the ancient-modern debate. Part II makes available for the first time in a modern edition Crotch’s 1818 lecture series. These texts help to fill a gap in our knowledge of the development of musical classics, as they span a period of years that were crucial to the history of canon formation.”

Trumpets Over the Sea: Being A Rambling and Egotistical Account of the London Symphony Orchestra's Engagement At Daytona Beach, Florida, in July-August 1967 by J. B. [John Boynton] Priestley (£11.50)Publisher: Heinemann — 1968Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0434603317]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and top corners with commensurate ruffling to the dust wrapper. Price Clipped.Description: From the cover: “In July 1967 J. B. Priestley moved with his wife and his entire household into a rented house at Daytona Beach. Intrigued by the idea of his favorite orchestra’s cultivated brass and percussion competing with Daytona’s torrid honky-tonk, he had decided to record for posterity the second visit of the London Symphony to the Florida International Music Festival. During the month-long engagement he attended every concert given by the L.S.O., mixed with the musicians and their hosts, and took in the Daytona scene with customary acuity.

There is much to treasure in TRUMPETS OVER THE SEA, especially for those whose enjoyment of classical music does not wait upon the whim of a critic. Mr Priestley’s analyses of the ambiance and performance of each concert are completely candid, his anecdotes of the musicians themselves amusing and his assessment of the discomforts — and comforts — of Daytona altogether convincing. The book radiates his appreciation of the young and buoyant L.S.O. — whose collective talent and disciplined ability are, Mr Priestley believes, unmatched in any of the arts in Britain, and whose verve is, we believe, matched only by Mr Priestley’s as a writer.”

From the cover: “How was Great Britain made? And what does it mean to be British? In this brilliant and wide-ranging book, Linda Colley explains how a new British nation was invented in the wake of the 1707 Act of Union, and how this new national identity was nurtured through war, religion, trade and imperial expansion.

Here too are numerous individual Britons — heroes and politicians like Nelson and Pitt; bourgeois patriots like Thomas Coram and John Wilkes; artists, writers and musicians who helped to forge our image of Britishness; as well as many ordinary men and women whose stories have never previously been told.

Powerful and timely, this lavishly illustrated book is a major contribution to our understanding of Britain’s past and to the growing debate about the shape and survival of Britain and its institutions in the future.”

My Life, My Way by Cliff Richard (£10.50)Publisher: Headline Review — 2008Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 075531588X]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “It was a few bars of Heartbreak Hotel, heard briefly through the open window of a car, that captured his imagination. The young Cliff Richard and his friends had never heard music like it. They went home and sat by their radios, desperate to find out whose voice they had found so exciting. Once he discovered Elvis Presley, Cliff knew what he wanted to do with his life and went for it with single-minded determination.

He isn’t the only council house kid to make it in rock ‘n’ roll, but he is the only one to have outsold every other artist in the UK including Elvis and the Beatles. He’s the only one who’s had a number one hit single in every decade and who, fifty years later, is still recording, still touring and still filling arenas the world over.

This is his story, told by him. A committed Christian, knighted by the Queen for his charity work, it is not the usual rock star’s tale of drugs, sex and degradation. It’s a fascinating story of a man who has broken all the rules, and a unique insight into one of the most iconic figures of our time.”

Orchestra by Jan Younghusband (£10.50)Publisher: Chatto & Windus — 1991Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0701137398]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges. Text complete, clean and tight overall but with a slightly grubby first blank.Description: Illustrated with colour photographs. From the cover: “Where would you find a piece of sticking plaster on a flute? Do you know about the curse of the Ninth Symphony? Why didn’t Beethoven become a child prodigy? Which is the only left-handed instrument in the orchestra? Why did Schumann give up playing the piano?

Illuminated by the comments of both Dudley Moore and Sir Georg Solti, Orchestra, takes the reader through the families of instruments — strings, woodwind, brass, percussion — and different periods of music — baroque, classical, romantic and modern. Combining history with anecdote, the book explores the lives of some of the great composers — Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Berlioz, Wagner, Stravinsky, Bartok-and their contribution to orchestral music.

With explanations of musical styles and technical terms set alongside intriguing and often amusing information about music and musicians, Orchestral brings to life both classical music and the people who create it.”
