Making History: Agency, Structure and Change in Social Theory: Agency, Structure and Change in Social Theory by Alex Callinicos (£32.00)Publisher: Cornell University Press — 1993Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0801421217]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper with a small spot to the join of the upper panel. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank and a small address sticker to the pastedown. Pages very gently age-tanned. Description: From the cover: “In recent years, the problem of historical change has come to assume central importance among English-speaking social scientists and historians. Much attention has been focused on how we relate institutions and institutional change to actions, and how we think of history as the outcome of this interaction. In Making History, Alex Callinicos takes a fresh look at both Marxist and non-Marxist positions in this debate, giving close attention to theworkofE. J. Hobsbawm, E. P. Thompson, G. A. Cohen, L. Althusser, A. Giddens, J. Elster, and J. Habermas, among others. His main concern is “with the mechanisms through which human beings transform their societies, and, for better or worse, push history onwards”.

Callinicos provides an even-handed and comprehensive synthesis that combines the highly fruitful theories of agency and language elaborated in Anglo-American analytical philosophy, Giddens’s theorization of structuration, and the insights of game theory with the powerful explanatory framework of classical historical materialism. He argues that structural determinism (characteristic of the followers of Althusser), the methodological individualism of the rational-choice Marxists (such as Elster), and the various attempts to reconcile these extremes, are all untenable. In his view, structures do not simply contain or constrain us; they also serve as frameworks that can enable human action. His aim is to demonstrate that human beings possess the power collectively to make history.

Making History is a timely, highly intelligent, and eminently readable book that deserves to be widely read. It will become an important focus for debates on Marxism, theoretical sociology, and philosophy. .”

In Search of the Maquis: Rural Resistance in Southern France, 1942-1944 by H. R. [Harry Roderick] Kedward (£27.00)Publisher: Oxford: Clarendon Press — 2003Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0198205783]Condition: Near Fine. Description: Illustrated by way of: Maps;

From the cover: “In Search of the Maquis is a study of the maquis in southern France, the Resisters who took to the woods and hills in the struggle against the German Occupation in the Second World War. Edward’s detailed and perceptive account explores what participation in the maquis meant for those involved, both at the time and subsequently. He examines the motivations of the maquisards and how the circumstances of occupation and resistance affected the ways of life of rural communities in the south of France.

This is a rich and original book which achieves a fruitful integration of extensive archival research and oral history. Professor Kedward’s scholarly and readable history allows the voices of individuals to be heard, and offers us important insights into the nature of community and regional tradition. From the many fascinating and moving individual stories emerge a sense of place, a clearer understanding of the maquisard, and an unsentimental assessment of the role of the maquis in French history.”

The Eye of Man: Form and Content in Western Painting by Selden Rodman (£24.00)Publisher: New York: Devin-Adair — 1955Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Good+ — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and gubby with rubbing to the spine ends and corners. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Pastedowns and endpapers browned with pencil doodles to the rear pastedown and blank. Pages lightly age-tanned. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black and White Photographs;

From the cover: “This is the book on modern art that a new generation has been waiting for.

In these pages, inflated artistic reputations are punctured, the heads of revered critics topple, and sacrosanct movements are exposed to the glaring test of their capacity for reflecting and creating life. But, most important, Mr. Rodman describes the achievements and aims of a new group of painters who express human and spiritual values without sacrificing the vital knowledge attained by the great formalists from Cezanne to Matisse.

The Eye of Man argues powerfully for that dynamic, expressive art which avoids the pretentiousness of purely formal painting without content, and which never is debased to the level of mere illustration.

Asserting that our age has carried private painting to extremes that have caused an almost complete lack of communication between artist and public, Selden Rodman passionately affirms the place of recognizable content and spiritual values in painting.

In the course of his argument, Mr. Rodman reassesses Western art from the Byzantines to the present and analyzes from a fresh viewpoint the works of the great pictorial spokesmen for humanity: Giotto, Gruenewald, El Greco, Rembrandt, Goya, Daumier, Van Gogh, Orozco, Rouault, and Shahn — artists whose meaning and vitality have lately suffered from the rewriting of art histories by formalist aestheticians”

The Philosophy of Civilization (2 Volumes) by Rutherford Hamilton Towner (£24.00)Publisher: G. P. Putnam's Sons — 1923Binding: Hardback First Edition. Condition: Good. Previous owners' inscription to the first blanks of both volumes. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned in both.Description: From the cover: “The impermanency of the great civilizations of the past is clearly recorded by history, and different causes have been assigned for the various rises and falls. Mr. Towner finds, however, certain main factors which are present in every case, and which, by their gradual appearance in the present, foreshadow the certain downfall of our own civilization. That the theories here presented will meet with much opposition is inevitable. Many of the movements which have been acclaimed as great steps forward, — the emancipation of woman, the prohibition of alcohol, as instances, — are shown to be vitally wrong. In support of his contentions, which are presented in a clear, forceful, and scholarly manner, he has marshalled an array of historical evidence that his opponents will find most formidable. This he asks us to study, that we may see in what a wrong direction we are headed, and by eliminating these dangerous factors render our civilization more stable and enduring.”Notes: Size: 8¾" x 5¾". The Balloonatics by Alan Morris (£21.00)Publisher: London: Jarrolds — 1970Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0091009405]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Contains: Black & white photographs; Maps to the endpapers and blanks; Glossary; Cutaways; Appendices [5];

From the cover: “Bloody April and First of the Many have established Alan Morris as a leading historian of military aviation. By presenting in The Balloonatics the unique story of the kite-balloon units who were born in the Great War and who died with it, Mr Morris has again filled a major historical gap. The result is both an invaluable reference book for the enthusiast and a narrative of inspiring courage and fantastic drama for the general reader.

During the First World War the Balloonatics fulfilled the most bizarre of duties: to spy on enemy movements and to direct artillery by telephone while staked out like tiger-bait for hostile aeroplanes and anti-aircraft guns. The author has traced survivors and combed British and foreign archives to produce a closely documented record of aerial traps, ruses and miraculous escapes.

The personal stories of these men — and of their hunters, the balloon-busters — are woven into a colourful tapestry of campaigns, inter-service quarrels and political failings.”

The Peasenhall Murder by Martin Fido & Keith Skinner (£19.50)Publisher: Sutton — 1990Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0862996953]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Maps;

From the cover: “Early one morning in 1902, in the quiet after a particularly violent thunderstorm the previous night, William Harsent came to visit his daughter Rose in the sleepy Suffolk village of Peasenhall, as he did every Sunday. He discovered a shocking scene.

His daughter lay, almost naked, in the kitchen. A pool of blood spread beneath her head and neck and her nightgown was burnt. Under her head lay a copy of the East Anglian Daily Times; broken glass and spilt paraffin lay all around. Her throat had been cut.

Twenty-three years old, unmarried and pregnant — something she had denied to both her mother and her employer — Rose seemed to have committed suicide. But bruising on her right cheek, the discovery of an unsigned assignation note and the absence of any instrument or weapon swiftly pointed to murder.

The girl’s violent death was an event which rocked the fabric of the close village life in Peasenhall — and no less shocking was the implication of William Gardiner, a married Methodist worthy with whose name Rose had been scandalously linked, in the events of that night. Gardiner found himself on trial for his life twice over, and was neither convicted nor cleared; when he fled into obscurity he left a small community still in shock and a case which has remained a mystery for nearly nine decades.

This complete re-examination of the events produces new evidence about all the characters involved. It traces Rose’s life and lovers; it shows how a tiny country village reacted to being thrust into the national limelight; it considers the way in which the Methodist chapel dealt with the devastating allegations of adultery and murder within its community. Gardiner’s movements after the trials are traced and the mystery of his disappearance is solved. And, significantly, this book shows how the juries might have reached satisfactory verdicts and overturns traditional assumptions about the murder and the subsequent police investigation.

Illustrated with over fifty contemporary photographs and illustrations, The Peasenhall Murder is an absorbing read for all those interested in following the trail of one of England’s most extraordinary real-life murder mysteries.”

One of the objectives is to reconsider those parts of the theories of international trade and capital movements which can be profitably analyzed with the technique of the money-income multiplier. Furthermore, an attempt is made to develop the multiplier technique in certain respects, applicable not merely to the theory of foreign trade but also to that of the trade cycle and to monetary problems in general. Lastly, the book has the pedagogic objective to present the multiplier pattern in so patient an exposition that it loses all the horrors which it still seems to hold for many, and becomes an easy tool which the student understands to handle with facility and care.”Notes: Size: 8¾" x 6". Operation Freshman:The Rjukan Heavy Water Raid 1942 by Richard Wiggan (£17.00)Publisher: London: William Kimber & Co., Ltd — 1986Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 071830571X]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Contains: Black & white photographs; Maps;

From the cover: “On a winter’s night in late 1942 there foundered in the mountains of Southern Norway one of the most vital — if not the most vital — missions of the Second World War. Thirty-four men in two gliders, towed by Halifax bombers, set out to sabotage the heavy water plant at Vemork and so cripple Germany’s efforts to be the first to produce an atomic bomb. Both gliders and one of the Halifaxes crashed. The crew of the bomber died instantly, as did the pilots and co-pilots of the gliders. But there were survivors from the gliders, members of the British 1st Airborne Division, Royal Engineers.

It was the fate of these Royal Engineers that turned this little-known raid, code-named Operation Freshman, into a tale of horror and murder that remained a mystery until British forces returned to Norway at the end of the war. The men died as a direct result of a top secret order just issued by Hitler and, then unknown to the British, aimed at curbing damaging commando raids.

Richard Wiggan tells how Operation Freshman was conceived and planned in a desperate race against time and of the difficulties to be overcome. His in-depth research into the operation included access to war crimes trial records not yet open to the general public. He presents a detailed account which includes Norwegian involvement in Freshman, both in the operation itself and in aiding the survivors. The book also describes the subsequent successful raid on Vemork by Special Operations Executive Norwegian agents.”

DJ slightly ruffled at the edges.Description: From the cover: “Crystals, Shamans, Guided Imagery, Healing Meditation — why have these New Age ideas been so eagerly accepted by so many North Americans? Why were Mormonism, Christian Science, and Baha’i so warmly welcomed earlier? This book explains how these and other alternative religious movements appear to meet people’s needs. The overview illuminates the personalities whose alleged revelations spawned historical heresies in all the major cults in the United States. She highlights important controversies within each movement as it aims for religious respectability. Her visits to cult centres and interviews with key members and scholars yield fascinating details, such as Mormons prohibit hot drinks and how Charles Fillmore, Unity Church founder, rewrote Psalm 23: ‘The Lord is my banker; my credit is good…’”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6½". 462 pages. James McNeill Whistler: Beyond the Myth by Ronald Anderson & Anne Koval (£16.00)Publisher: John Murray — 1994Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0719550270]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little faded at the spine and pulled at the top edges of both panels. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black and White Photographs;

From the cover: “The myth perpetuated throughout Whistler’s life — of a witty, irascible dandy endlessly feuding with the establishment or anyone else who stood in his way — clouds the real extent of his artistic achievement. Now, for the first time ever, his art and life are brought together to recreate the extraordinary career of the man behind that myth.

From a youth in Tsarist Russia, an American military training at West Point and a Bohemian lifestyle in 1850s Paris, Whistler went on to embody the image of the cosmopolitan artist. His friendships with Courbet, Fantin Latour, Rossetti, Millais, Manet, Monet, Degas, Baudelaire, Swinburne, Wilde and Mallarme mark him out as a crucial player in the larger art movements of the nineteenth century, and a pivotal figure between the British and French art scenes.

The many strands that make up Whistler’s personality form a complex and intriguing individual who sought to uphold a public persona often at variance with his private self. His life reflected the title of his only book, The Gentle Art of Making Enemies, most notably in his libel suit against Ruskin. Plagued by doubts about his work, his sensitivity made him temperamental, He was often at odds with his family, and was rarely seen without a beautiful woman on his arm, until in his fifties he found happiness in a tragically short-lived marriage to Beatrice Godwin.

By examining Whistler’s life and work together with the impact his followers, collectors and friends made on his reputation after his death, Anderson and Koval show this most controversial and colourful artist to be one of the most remarkable men of his age.”

From the cover: “The twelve portraits of power presented in this book are Lloyd George, Kemal Ataturk, Lenin, Ghandi, Mussolini, Hitler, Churchill, Roosevelt, Stalin, Marshal Tito, Nasser, and Mao Tse-Tung.

The background given to the twelve personalities traces the significant movements of their time and provides a fascinating and highly readable history.

Events are described in their wider, more fundamental contexts. For instance, the recent struggles in India and China are not seen merely as anti-colonial struggles, but as consequences of the spread of literacy and the growth of national pride.”

Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Light spotting to the blanks and pastedowns. Text complete, clean and tight otherwise.Description: First British Edition. [First Published: First published under the title of ‘Het Moderne Geldwezen’ by N.V. Noord-Hollandsche Uitgevers Maatschappij, 1945] From the cover: “The publication of a text-book on money cannot be justified by the lack of written material on the subject. Books, articles and learned discussions on money exist in abun dance, and every newcomer to the scene should explain what particular niche he intends his book to occupy.

The authors of this book have been struck by the fact that money not only presents difficult problems at the esoteric heights of academic polemics, but offers severe ob stacles to those who want to penetrate its somewhat more practical complexities. This book is aimed at the latter category, which includes both undergraduates and interested laymen. Any claim for originality is based on the didactic qualities of the book rather than on the novelty of its conclusions.

The book does not presuppose any prior knowledge about monetary problems, but starts at the beginning, and, developing its subject in a step-by-step fashion, strives to impart to its readers an adequate under standing of current monetary evolution. It explains the technical and institutional as pects of money against an historical back ground, discusses the theoretical relations between the flow of money and the flow of goods, and proceeds to an analysis of present-day monetary policies. Its first part confines itself to a country’s internal monetary problems, while the second part introduces the complications arising from economic relations with other countries. Its final part outlines the growth of monetary theory, and provides a link with more specialized studies in this field.”

Japanese Naval Aces and Fighter Units in World War II by Ikuhito Hata & Yasuho Izawa (£14.50)Publisher: Shrewsbury: Airlife Publishing Ltd. — 1990Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 1853101389]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Black & White Drawings; Tables; Maps to the endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “The Pacific War was an air war, yet, until now, Western readers have had little chance to learn about Japan’s naval fighter pilots and their World War II air groups. This English translation of a classic Japanese work finally lifts the cloak of anonymity that has hidden their identities from the West for so long. Within these pages the reader gains an intimate and unprecedented view of the men, their aircraft, and their victories and defeats.

Divided into three parts, the book opens with rare photos and brief descriptions of the principal Japanese naval aircraft. The second part offers concise histories of the air groups, including every carrier-and land-based fighter unit in the Imperial Navy — from the China Incident in the early 1930s to the end of the Pacific War in September 1945. Dates of organization and disbanding, key movements and action results, brief summaries of important battles, and anecdotes about leaders and aces are all provided. The third part captures Japan’s leading naval aces in photos and individual biographical sketches.

This translation — the only one available in English — is based on the revised and enlarged 1975 edition of Nihon Kaigun Sentoki-tai, the definitive work on the subject in Japan. To produce this unique record Ikuhiko Hata, an internationally known military historian, and his highly regarded researcher Yasuho Izawa spent years tracking down information and conducting interviews with surviving aces and the families of those killed in the war. Their Japanese perspective adds a significant new dimension to the annals of World War II.

Nearly 350 photographs of aces and aircraft — many new to this edition — supplement the text. Some 100 line-drawings of aircraft show unit markings and paint colours. To aid the Western reader this edition adds a section on Japanese naval terminology. Appendix tables chronicle naval fighter aces by record, pilots killed in action, pilots by training class, and major air battles. Indexes by name and unit and end maps of the entire Pacific theatre provide excellent references.”

In the author’s words, the strange figures who are potential dictators are as numerous as bacteria. Devils or Saviours shows the conditions in which such figures succeeded in establishing themselves on the historical stage, bringing tragedy and disaster in their wake. Only an historian of Hallgarten’s rank could undertake to write, in a single and not too voluminous book, the entire history of dictatorship from the old Greeks up to present times. Despite the exemplary conciseness of his style, a clear picture emerges of the historical and especially the social background of all the significant dictatorships since 600 B.C.; and the individual dictators and their methods are brought into sharp focus.”Notes: Size: 8¾" x 5¾". First Edition. [ISBN: 0853154899]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “From its foundation in 1898 ‘The Fed’ has remained the popular name for the South Wales Miners’ Federation (SWMF), which in 1945 became the South Wales Area of the National Union of Mine workers. The core of this full-length history is the momentous period from the General Strike of 1926 to the nationalization of the mines in January 1947, including the bitter intervening period of struggle in the twenties and thirties against unemployment at home and fascism abroad. To the treatment of the post Second World War period the authors have added a final chapter assessing the achievements and the problems of the nationalized industry, as well as the role of the miners in the upsurge of industrial militancy that characterized the sixties and seventies. Native Welsh themselves, both from the South Wales mining area, the authors show how ‘The Fed’ has derived its particular strength from being an organic part of the life of individual South Wales communities, and they vividly record the rich variety of working-class (especially rank-and-file) response to Union as well as governmental attitudes and actions.”Notes: 530 pages. From the cover: “Holy war: Christianity versus Islam. Brutality, greed, honour, chivalry; the clink of chain mail, the clatter of hooves, the call of the muezzin. Such are the stock ingredients of the Crusades. But to what extent do the stereotypes fit with the reality?

In his remarkable new book, Jonathan Phillips explores this conflict of ideas, beliefs and cultures and shows both the contradictions and the diversity of holy war: friendships and alliances between Christians and Muslims; triumphs of diplomacy rather than the sword; the launch of crusades against Christians, and calls for jihads against Muslims.

Phillips draws on contemporary writings — on chronicles, songs, sermons, travel diaries, letters, financial accounts and peace treaties — to throw a brilliant new light on people and events we thought we knew well: the bloody conquest of Jerusalem in the First Crusade; the titanic struggle between Richard the Lionheart and Saladin; the breathtaking naivety of the Children’s Crusade; and the ruthless suppression of the Knights Templar. Less familiar but no less central are the stories of the intimidating and astute politician, Queen Melisende of Jerusalem; the fiery preacher, Al-Sulami; the Arabic-speaking excommunicate and Holy Roman Emperor, Frederick II.

Over time the Crusades were directed against a variety of opponents: not only Muslims in the Middle East but against Cathar heretics, political enemies of the papacy, the Mongols, pagan tribes of northern Europe, and the Ottoman Turks. Although the notion of fighting for one’s faith fell into disrepute in the Enlightenment, in a final chapter Jonathan Phillips traces the crusading impulse up to the present day — to George W. Bush’s characterisation of the war on terrorism as a crusade.

Vivid, original and illuminating, Holy Warriors provides an unparalleled account of one of the great cultural, political and religious movements in world history.”

Nothing Is Impossible with God by Kathryn Kuhlman (£11.50)Publisher: Prentice-Hall — 1974Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0136252931]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with a crease to the foot of the upper panel. Text complete, clean and tight but now somewhat age-tanned and a touch musty.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “Like Kathryn Kuhlman’s earlier accounts of her ministry this book is composed of the first-person accounts of men and women whose lives were changed during Miss Kuhlman’s Miracle Services. Patients with terminal cancer, children with leukaemia and birth defects; victims of arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and spinal disintegration — these are only a few of the countless thousands who have been touched by God’s healing power in the midst of a crowded auditorium. Miss Kuhlman calls out their locations and bids them “Stand and accept your healing”. And before the eyes of friends and relatives, individuals arise from wheel-chairs and stretchers, born anew in both mind and body. Incredible? And yet, this book presents the stories of twenty people who were considered hopeless by medical science and who later returned, cured, to amaze their own doctors — and live new, utterly joyful lives, transformed by their new-found faith.”Notes: Size: 8½" x 5½". The Dead Sea Scrolls: Qumran in Perspective by Geza Vermes (£11.50)Publisher: Collins — 1977Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0002161427]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the edges. Gently faded at the spine. Price Clipped. Top edges of the text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: From the cover: “In a clear narrative of the sensational appearance of these scrolls and of the ensuing arguments, mistakes and delays, Dr Vermes shows how ‘the greatest manuscript find of modern times’ (W. F. Albright) is now ‘likely to become the academic scandal par excellence of the twentieth century’. But he assembles the key facts about 43 non-biblical documents (some still unpublished) from a vast scholarly literature which he lists selectively and from his own pioneering work; and then he shows what light is thrown on the second and first centuries BC and on the first century AD up to the fateful year 68 when Qumran fell to the Romans. A factual picture of the life of the sectarian monastery at Qumran as reflected in the scrolls is given by a careful assembly of these documents and fragments. Allusions to contemporary events are deciphered where possible, and comparisons between this group (almost certainly Essene) and other movements of the time are drawn; but no attempt is made by Dr Vermes to follow a number of scholars, whom he names frankly, in going beyond the evidence into uncontrolled speculation. The religious ideas of this strange community are expounded for their own sake, and their relevance to Old and New Testament, and Judaic studies is examined. In particular it is shown that our new knowledge, while still defective at many points, opens up a new approach to the origins of Christianity.”Notes: Size: 8¾" x 5¼". The Fundamentals of Riding by Lucy Rees (£11.50)Publisher: St Martins Press New York — 1991Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 031206750X]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper, slightly more heavily at the tail of the spine. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs; Diagrams; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “The fundamentals of riding are not contained in a simple list of steps, like the rules for using a computer or fixing a car; the basis of riding is the symbiosis of two living creatures, horse and human. Riding is all too often taught as though the horse were a piece of machinery, with the result that riders, especially as they advance, have little understanding of the subtly different requirements of each riding style, or of why the horse responds as it does.

Lucy Rees’ approach is very different. She maintains that the key to riding is understanding how the horse adapts its movements in response to the rider’s. With the aid of superb, specially commissioned photographs and computer “paintbox” illustrations which demonstrate how an unridden horse moves naturally, she is able to show in words and pictures just how the horse reacts. She explains how to feel the horse’s movements when riding and the effect the rider can have on its movement and balance. With this understanding, the techniques behind the various riding styles and disciplines become clear and the rider has a chance to achieve harmony with the horse.

Over 300 exciting pictures and authoritative text combine to make a book that’s useful and fascinating to beginners and more advanced riders alike. It covers the basic movements in English and Western riding, jumping and dressage in a way that finally makes clear just what rider and horse are doing, and why.”

Woman into Citizen: The World Movement Towards The Emancipation Of Woman In The Twentieth Century With Accounts Of The Contributions Of The International Alliance Of Women, The League Of Nations And The Relevant Organisations Of United Nations by Arnold Whittick (£11.50)Publisher: Athenaeum with Frederick Muller — 1979Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0584970633]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Price Clipped. Dust wrapper slightly ruffled along edges with some small, closed, tears at top edge. Bruised at the head, tail and corners. Leans. Top edges tanned. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “Illustrated with a pictorial record of the major events and personalities involved, WOMAN INTO CITIZEN tells the story of the campaign in the twentieth century for equal status of women with men in all fields of political, social, economic and cultural life. The campaign is seen internationally and mainly through the work of the International Alliance of Women. It begins with the nineteenth century background of the subjection of women and their early struggle towards emancipation. The inception of the international movement for woman suffrage in Washington in 1902 and its acceptance at the first Congress of the IAW in Berlin in 1904 were the beginnings of international cooperation for this purpose. From these starting points the book describes the mobilisation of women to achieve full recognition in countries throughout the world. By the end of the First World War the battle was half won and activities were gradually extended by the IAW to secure equality in all fields. In this action it worked with and stimulated the endeavours of the League of Nations, the United Nations’ Status of Women Commission, UNESCO and many other organisations. International Women’s Year 1975, marking the beginning of a decade dedicated to the advancement of women’s place in society, was celebrated with a special presentation to Helvi Sipila by leading members of international women’s movements in recognition of her invaluable services to the interests of women world-wide. This, and other significant occasions are illustrated in the chronological pictorial record which, together with copious references, appendices, bibliography and index, provide students of the world women’s movements with a book of unusual scope and scholarship.”Notes: Foreword or introduction by Helvi Sipilâ.
