Back to the Drawing Board: Aircraft That Flew But Never Took Off by Bill Gunston (£44.00)Publisher: Motorbooks International — 1996Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0760303169]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Diagrams;

From the cover: “An aircraft designer would, quite obviously, never design an aeroplane that he felt would be either dangerous or unsuitable for its purpose. But designers are so often the victims of accountant’s reports, committee recommendations and severe movement of the goal-posts, that the end-product that takes to the air bears little resemblance to his original concept. This book is a study of some of the examples that, for some reason, became notorious for their inability to fulfil their raison d’etre.

Each aircraft that is included is looked at in depth from several aspects. What was the intended purpose of the aeroplane? Why did the designer reach his conclusion? Why did the machine fail to live up to expectations? The answers to these questions makes for fascinating reading and gives a tantalising insight into the world of aircraft design and construction over the last century.”

The First Rotarian: The Life and Times of Paul Percy Harris, Founder of Rotary by James P. [Patrick] Walsh (£33.00)Publisher: Shoreham by Sea: SCAN Books — 1979Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Description: Signed by the author on the title page — unverified and reflected as such in the lack of premium. Contains: Black & white photographs;

From the cover: “Paul Harris will forever be remembered as the founder of Rotary International.

This account of his life, the first to be published, makes fascinating reading and marks the seventy-fifth anniversary of Rotary, which today has nearly one million members in more than 150 countries.

Harris, reserved, talented and physically frail, was not only the founder of Rotary, but was also the trail-blazer of the worldwide service club movement.

His original inspiration led others to the formation of organizations such as Kiwanis International, Lions International, Optimist International and Civitan International. The service club concept has also been embraced by the young — Interact, Rotaract, Key Clubs, Circle K, Round Table and Wo-Co.

Thus, the seemingly inauspicious first ‘Rotary’ meeting in 1905 of Harris, a Chicago attorney, and three friends triggered off one of the most important sociological phenomena of the twentieth century.

He created, quietly and effectively, a new concept of service to our own kind and generated a movement that has touched the lives of millions.”

An Invaluable Treasure : A History of the TSB by Michael Moss & Iain Russell (£22.00)Publisher: Weidenfeld & Nicolson — 1994Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0297811185]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and top corners with the expected associated abrasion to the dust wrapper which is lightly spotted on the reverse. Small pen mark (not remainder) to the fore and bottom edge of the text block. Boards lightly dusty. Text complete, clean and tight but the heavier art paper has become a little tacky in places. Description: Illustrated with photographs, in colour & black and white. From the cover: “The TSB group traces its origins back almost two hundred years to the beginning of the nineteenth century when in the small Dumfriesshire village of Ruthwell the Reverend Henry Duncan founded the first savings bank in 1810. Shortly afterwards savings banks were established throughout the United Kingdom by like-minded people who advocated the virtues of thrift in an age when there was little public provision for the vicissitudes of life. From the 1840s their funds were secured by the government, hence the name trustee savings banks.

The savings banks had to compete for custom from the outset with friendly societies, life insurance companies and, from the 1860s, with the Post Office Savings Bank, the brain-child of William Ewart Gladstone. In the face of adversity the savings banks formed an Association to protect their status and secure better services for their customers. By the end of the century savings banks had started to amalgamate, a trend which was to accelerate in the coming years. The savings banks also changed their appeal away from saving for a rainy day to saving for a purpose — the purchase of household goods or a holiday.

During the first and second world wars the savings banks served a crucial role in mobilising personal savings for the war effort, using imaginative poster campaigns. Although the savings banks began to explore the possibility of providing what were in effect commercial banking services in the 1920s, it took over fifty years for the TSBs to come together to form the modern clearing bank.

The development of the TSB into one of Britain’s largest private client banks is a fascinating story of struggle and achievement. Michael Moss and lain Russell trace the origins of the movement back to the late eighteenth century and set the TSBs in the wider context of both spending and saving. They show how the TSBs had on the one hand to join with other thrift and temperance organisations to condemn extravagance and on the other to compete often hard for their custom with these selfsame organisations. They explore the relationship, often uneasy, between the savings banks and the national savings campaign inaugurated during the first world war. They describe the dramatic events leading up to flotation in 1986.

The book is heavily illustrated, particularly with evocative advertisements appealing for savings or warning against the dangers of profligacy..”

Both flaps creased vertically. Gently bruised at head & tail of spine and corners. Leans slightly. Light spotting to start and finish although text and plates more than accetapble overall.Description: 2nd Printing. From the cover: “In magnificent colour photographs by Clyde H. Smith, Pennsylvania receives the full attention it so richly deserves. From the fertile farmland of Lancaster County, where the famous Old Order Amish still plough their fields with horses and mules, to the rushing white water of the Youghiogheny River, to the Gettysburg and Brandywine battlefields and Valley Forge, to the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania, to Philadelphia’s Chestnut Street and Independence Hall, to Lake Erie and its unique Presque Isle, Smith captures all of Pennsylvania’s beauty during every season of the year. In an informative text which complements the photographs, Cronan Minton describes Pennsylvania as “the archetypal American state”. He traces the state’s fascinating history — from the days of its founder, William Penn through to the Revolutionary War and the Westward movement of the pioneers, up to the Industrial Revolution and the development of Pennsylvania’s canal and railroad systems, to its present status as one of America’s four greatest industrial and urban statesNotes: Illustrated by Clyde H. Enjoying The Wisdom Books by Margaret T. [Theodora] Monro (£18.00)Publisher: Longmans — 1964Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded . Previous owners' inscription to the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight otherwise. Description: From the cover: “The purpose of this book is to help Catholics to approach a vital part of the Bible with a fresh eye. There is no lack of books which provide a wealth of background information and commentary on the Bible. But Margaret Monro is concerned to help the multitude of people who want accurate, informed and sympathetic help in reading the Bible itself.

The enduring popularity of her earlier book, Enjoying the New Testament, has shown that Margaret Monro has few equals in the art of helpful introductions to Biblical subjects which have become overlaid by a daunting amount of scholarly discussion. She herself has described this book as one to help people who feel, however dimly and confusedly, that they need to read and understand the Old Testament itself before they can make much of the fascinating new material about it.”

The Rebel Sell: How the Counter Culture Became Consumer Culture by Joseph Heath & Andrew Potter (£18.00)Publisher: Capstone — 2005Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1841126543]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: From the cover: “With the incredible popularity of Michael Moore’s books and films, and the continuing success of anti-consumer critiques like ADBUSTERS magazine and Naomi Klein’s NO LOGO, it is hard to ignore the growing tide of resistance to the corporate-dominated world. But do these vocal opponents of the status quo offer us a real political alternative?

In this wide-ranging and perceptive work of cultural criticism, Joseph Heath and Andrew Potter shatter the central myth of radical political, economic and cultural thinking. The idea of a counterculture — that is, a world outside of the consumer dominated one that encompasses us — pervades everything from the anti-globalisation movement to feminism and environmentalism. And the idea that mocking the system, or trying to ‘jam’ it so it will collapse, they argue, is not only counterproductive but has helped to create the very consumer society that radicals oppose.

In a lively blend of pop culture, history and philosophical analysis, Heath and Potter offer a startlingly clear picture of what a concern for social justice might look like without the confusion of the countercultural obsession with being different.”

It goes far deeper. It considers Algeria as a single but striking example of what happens to a primitive culture when it is brought into contact with a modern industrialised economy. This book is important not only as a brief but cogent treatment of the real problems of Algeria. It has applications to many other under-developed countries, including those in the British Commonwealth. Why were Mormonism, Christian Science, and Baha’i so warmly welcomed earlier? This book explains how these and other alternative religious movements appear to meet people’s needs. The overview illuminates the personalities whose alleged revelations spawned historical heresies in all the major cults in the United States. She highlights important controversies within each movement as it aims for religious respectability. Her visits to cult centres and interviews with key members and scholars yield fascinating details, such as Mormons prohibit hot drinks and how Charles Fillmore, Unity Church founder, rewrote Psalm 23: ‘The Lord is my banker; my credit is good…’”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6½". 462 pages. CHICANO VISIONS: American Painters On the Verge by Cheech Marin (£16.50)Publisher: Bullfinch Press — 2002Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0821228064]Condition: Very Good. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Plates [3]; Colour Drawings [96]; Essays by Max Benavidez, Constance Cortez & Tere Romo.

From the cover: “Chicano Visions: American Painters on the Verge is the most comprehensive survey of a remarkably dynamic, and growing, body of work. The Chicano art movement was developed outside the national and international spotlights, mainly in Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay area, San Antonio, and other cities in south Texas. Early on, when making a name for themselves in the 1970s, Chicano artists largely worked alone and without encouragement or acknowledgment from the art community. In time, a few important groups such as Los Four, Asco, and Con Safo created a sense of identity and cohesion. But it was city life — the barrio and the street itself — that provided the ultimate stimulus and common ground for these artists, who used city walls as their first “canvas”. In the past few decades, Chicano artists have emerged as powerful agents of change and drive. Figures such as Carlos Almaraz, Mel Casas, Carmen Lomas Garza, Gronk, Wayne Healy, Adan Hernandez, Leo Limon, Frank Romero, John Valadez, Patssi Valdez, and Vincent Valdez are among the twenty-six artists showcased here; they are but a handful of the Chicano artists — overwhelmingly university or art-school trained — working in the United States today.

Cheech Marin, best known as an actor, performer, and philanthropist, is the country’s foremost collector of Chicano art. Over the years, Marin has not only actively worked to support Chicano artists but has become their friend and most ardent spokesperson. As he writes in the introduction, “With little commercial encouragement, these artists have struggled to gain acceptance in the gallery world. Many painters show their works in restaurants, coffeehouses, or wherever there is a wall and an audience. What matters is they continue to create. “ Now, through Marin’s efforts and those of many other individuals and institutions, these richly appealing works are available to the public in this landmark publication.

At the core of Chicano Visions is a portfolio of ninety-six stunning paintings, largely drawn from Marin’s own collection. Three essays by leading scholars in the field, an introduction and commentaries on the works by Cheech Marin, and biographies of the artists combine to make this an invaluable art and reference book.

Chicano Visions is supported by a major art and cultural exhibition that will travel to fifteen U. S. cities over a five-year period.”

The Hite Report on Women and Love: A Cultural Revolution in Progress by Shere Hite (£14.50)Publisher: Viking — 1988Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight but the first few pages are slightly wrinkled.Description: From the cover: “Women are questioning their love relationships in a way that has profound implications for our society.

In this culmination of The Hite Report trilogy 4,500 women provide eloquent testimony of the disturbingly unsatisfying nature of their emotional relationships and point to what they see as the causes.

Women and Love, the first major report on women since the assimilation of the women’s movement into our culture, presents a controversial analysis of contemporary society. In these pages women speak with honesty, clarity and deep feeling ranging from humour to anger. They talk about the emotional coldness and harassing behaviour of most men in dealing with the women they love. The majority believe that men are unsupportive, while at the same time they demand women’s emotional support; that men are getting much more from relationships than they are willing to give. The majority find themselves lonelier in marriages and relationships than they were when they were single; contrary to the view that women are often ‘left’ by men, the majority of divorces and break-ups are initiated and carried through by women.

Above all, Women and Love documents the anger of women of all social, economic and political backgrounds — anger so deep that they feel compelled to re-evaluate not only their relationships but the very cultural patterns upon which these relationships are based.

Arthur's Britain: The Land and the Legend by Derek Brewer (£14.00)Publisher: The Pevensey Press — 1985Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0907115268]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Facsimiles; Colour Photographs; Maps;

From the cover: “In British folktale, legend and literature, King Arthur, the saviour hero of the land, lives on. He takes his origin from a possible heroic warrior of the Celtic races who was the dominant leader of the resistance movement against the invading English. But in the Middle Ages the English themselves came to adopt him as their representative king, and the stories of his exploits, of his knights — Lancelot, Gawain, Kay and the rest — and of his beautiful Queen Guinevere and her fatal love affair with Lancelot all took their settings from Britain.

Nowhere are these stories more vividly perpetuated than on the face of the British landscape. From Loch Lomond to St Michael’s Mount, from Wookey Hole to the Brecon Beacons, striking natural features throughout England, Scotland and Wales have tales of Arthur and his knights attached to them; and so do man-made monuments, from prehistoric stone circles and burial chambers to medieval fortified castles and inaccessible hermits’ cells.

In all their variety of shape and mood the major Arthurian sites of Britain are illustrated here, in colour throughout, by Ernest Frankl (well known as the photographer of the Pevensey Press souvenir guidebooks), who evokes their quintessential character. In his commentary, the distinguished medieval scholar Derek Brewer first traces the growth of Arthurian stories in literature, and then takes a refreshingly direct look at the tales surrounding each site — without minimising the power of the legends, and of the locations that have fostered them, to stir the imagination.

Usefully divided into four main regions to serve as a guide for planning holidays and as a gazetteer whilst travelling, this handsome book will be welcomed as a unique compilation by all lovers of Britain’s heritage.”
