Nicholas and Alexandra: The Family Albums by Prince Michael of Greece (£77.00)Publisher: Tauris Parke Books — 1996Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 1850434948]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper which is very slightly pulled at the head of the upper panel and a short, closed, tear to the foot of the same. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black and White Photographs;

From the cover: “In the summer of 1918, Tsar Nicholas II, his Tsarina Alexandra and their five children were executed by firing squad at Ekaterinburg. The unique and revealing photographs in this book illustrate the intimate family life of the last ruling Romanovs from 1896, shortly after the marriage of Nicholas and Alexandra, to the family’s house arrest at Tsarskoye Selo palace in 1917, shortly before their death. These photographs have been selected from thousands taken by the Tsarina and her five children, which were mounted in their own and the Tsar’s personal albums. The albums have until now remained hidden for over seventy years in government archives in Moscow.

Whilst researching his book Imperial Palaces of Russia in the Autumn of 1990, Prince Michael of Greece was puzzled by an invitation to view material in the government archives. Thirty thick, leather-bound volumes, embossed with the Imperial monogram, awaited him -the private photograph albums, which the curators wanted to show first to a relative of the Romanov family.

Through his selection of images from the family albums, the author here tells the story of the last Tsar, one of the saddest of twentieth-century politics. Nicholas II was a man both unprepared and ill equipped to rule the greatest empire in the world, and under the influence of Alexandra, the wife he so adored, he led Russia to disaster. But theirs was also an extraordinary love story, as the three hundred photographs in this book reveal. Away from the responsibilities of Empire, we see a close and loving family of simple tastes and great candour. The photographs clearly illustrate the personalities of Nicholas and Alexandra and of their four daughters -Olga, Tatiana, Maria and Anastasia — and beloved son and heir Alexis, who suffered from haemophilia and whose every move was carefully watched.

The family were keen, and sometimes talented, amateur photographers, who took their own cameras with them everywhere, be it on family picnics or on state occasions. The book thus illustrates a fascinating transition from the joy and relaxation of the early years, through the tension caused by the Tsarevich’s illness, to the stresses and anxiety of the First World War and the coming Revolution. These photographs provide a new perspective on the life of the Imperial family, and constitute an invaluable historical document.”

From the cover: “THE Author of this elegant and witty satire on some of the follies of the contemporary American scene is thirty-one years old. In the U.S.A., where the book was first published, it provoked widespread comment. “Perhaps,” says one critic, “this novel is the beginning of the Literary Revolution. Perhaps it is only a flash (of humour and good sense) in the dark night of realism.” Certainly, it is a highly original and distinguished first novel; and beneath its good humour and wit will be found a deep moral concern for some of the subjects of the story.”Notes: Size: 7½" x 5". Mr Rank: A Study of J. Arthur Rank and British Films by Alan Wood (£26.00)Publisher: London: Hodder & Stoughton — 1952Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with tape reinforcement to the verso, tanned at the spine. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding. Leans a little. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Price Clipped. Previous owners' gift inscription to the first blank. Description: Contains: Diagrams [1];

From the cover: “A great servant to his country — it is with Michael Balcon’s tribute to J. Arthur Rank that Mr. Wood ends his book; and having read this account of the extraordinary achievements of a man without intellectual pretensions but with courage, pertinacity and a simple religious faith, the reader may well agree. The entry of this plain Yorkshire flour-miller into the bizarre world of financiers, stars and directors — a world of which he knew nothing — makes a fascinating study, with many ironic twists.

But the book is more than the story of one man : it is almost the history of British films during the last twenty years, with a great deal of material never before published. Mr. Wood goes fully and clearly into the economic difficulties of film production, the effects of American competition, the dangers of the Rank Organisation’s own semi-monopoly, and the results of Government interference: while the author’s friendship with many of those in the industry allows a number of entertaining glimpses of famous film personalities. Mr. Rank is lively, informative, and (in part) highly controversial.”

Voodoo Histories: The Role of the Conspiracy Theory in Shaping Modern History by David Aaronovitch (£24.00)Publisher: Jonathan Cape — 2009Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0224074709]Condition: Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper. Book would be Very Good were it not for the faint (coffee?) stain to the foot of the first few leaves. Text unaffected else. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black and White Photographs;

From the cover: “Our age is oosessed by the idea of conspiracy. We see it everywhere — from Pearl Harbor to 9/11, from the assassination of Kennedy to the death of Diana. Bookshop shelves threaten to collapse under the weight of texts devoted to proving myriad conspiracy theories true, while even quality newspapers and serious TV channels are prepared to give them credence.

For David Aaronovitch, there came a time when he started to see a pattern. These theories used similar dodgy methods with which to insinuate their claims: they linked themselves to the supposed conspiracies of the past (it happened then so it can happen now); they carefully manipulated their evidence to hide its holes; they relied on the authority of dubious academic sources. Most importantly, they elevated their believers to membership of an elite — a group of people able to see beyond lies to a higher reality. But why believe something that entails stretching the bounds of probability so far? Surely it is more likely that men did actually land on the moon in 1969 than that thousands of people were enlisted to fabricate a deception that they did.

In this entertaining and enlightening book — aimed to provide ammunition for those who have found themselves at the wrong end of a conversation about moon landings or twin towers — Aaronovitch carefully probes and explodes a dozen of the major conspiracy theories. In doing so, he looks at why people believe them, and makes an argument for a true scepticism: one based on a thorough knowledge of history and a strong dose of common sense.”

Missing Believed Lost: The Great British Film Search by Allen Eyles & David Meeker (£21.00)Publisher: London: BFI Publishing — 1992Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0-85170-306-2]Condition: Near Fine. Text complete, clean and tight but with a hint of age-toning to the margins. Description: Contains: Black & white photographs; Frontispiece;

From the cover: “No one has seen Alfred Hitchcock’s silent picture The Mountain Eagle in over sixty years. Twelve of the early films of one of Britain’s greatest film-makers, Michael Powell, are lost. These are just a fraction of the several hundred British features which have gone missing since their first release. Most will almost certainly never be found, but there is always a chance that a print still survives on a shelf in some dusty cupboard. Not all these lost films are masterpieces. But many valuable parts of our film heritage could still be rescued with a concerted search and a little luck.

In this book the National Film Archive has selected the one hundred British features which it would most like to find. Each of the missing films is described in detail, with full credits and with illustrative stills, where any survive. For good measure there are brief details of some key British documentaries and television programmes which the Archive would also dearly love to locate.

This book marks the first systematic attempt by the National Film Archive to initiate a public search for Britain’s lost films. Can anyone turn up a print of Max Miller in Educated Evans! Are the films of Walter Forde or Bernard Vorhaus which we now lack really gone for ever? Does a print still survive somewhere of Murder at Monte Carlo, Errol Flynn’s first film appearance in Britain? And what of the early Sherlock Holmes film A Study in Scarlet (1914)? The great British film search is on.”

Although the Michael Schumacher-Ferrari partnership won again, it was no longer crushingly dominant. This entertaining championship also featured maiden victories for two future “greats,” Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen. Asia Future Shock: Business Crisis and Opportunity in the Coming Years by Michael Backman (£18.00)Publisher: Palgrave Macmillan — 2008Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0230006779]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: From the cover: “The transformation of China, India and much of the rest of Asia is seismic. Never has the region changed so much in such a short time. But change means opportunity and risk — big risk. Do you know what to expect? Is your business prepared? Are you ready?

The numbers are staggering:

Within ten years, funds under management in China will grow to at least US$1. 5 trillion; 100 million mainland Chinese tourists will pour out of China annually; Singapore will be a major haven for hidden offshore funds; Thai hospitals will be important providers of healthcare in Asia, the Middle East, and to underinsured Americans; and shortages of management talent in India and China will be even more acute.

Within 20 years, a billion more people will live in Asia’s cities than do so already; China will be a major sophisticated weapons exporter; Malaysia will have almost run out of oil; and divorce and family breakdown will mean that the size of the average Asian household will be substantially smaller.

Within 25 years, Japan’s population will have shrunk by 20 million; there will be 250 million more men than women in India and China; half the world’s nuclear reactors will be in Asia; the world’s biggest community of English speakers will be in China; and Asia-wide water shortages will see big hikes in food prices.

Asia Future Shock is designed for corporate strategists and scenario builders, to alert them to these and other major shifts, and to identify the opportunities and risks.”

The Rebel Sell: How the Counter Culture Became Consumer Culture by Joseph Heath & Andrew Potter (£18.00)Publisher: Capstone — 2005Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1841126543]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: From the cover: “With the incredible popularity of Michael Moore’s books and films, and the continuing success of anti-consumer critiques like ADBUSTERS magazine and Naomi Klein’s NO LOGO, it is hard to ignore the growing tide of resistance to the corporate-dominated world. But do these vocal opponents of the status quo offer us a real political alternative?

In this wide-ranging and perceptive work of cultural criticism, Joseph Heath and Andrew Potter shatter the central myth of radical political, economic and cultural thinking. The idea of a counterculture — that is, a world outside of the consumer dominated one that encompasses us — pervades everything from the anti-globalisation movement to feminism and environmentalism. And the idea that mocking the system, or trying to ‘jam’ it so it will collapse, they argue, is not only counterproductive but has helped to create the very consumer society that radicals oppose.

In a lively blend of pop culture, history and philosophical analysis, Heath and Potter offer a startlingly clear picture of what a concern for social justice might look like without the confusion of the countercultural obsession with being different.”

Business as a Calling: Work and the Examined Life by Michael Novak (£17.50)Publisher: Simon & Schuster — 1996Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. From the cover: “Why do we work so hard at our jobs, day after day? Why is a job well done important to us? We know there is more to a career than money and prestige, but what exactly do we mean by “fulfilment”? These are old but important questions. They belong with some newly discovered ones: Why are people in business more religious than the population as a whole? What do people of business know, and what do they do, that anchors their faith? In this ground-breaking and inspiring book, Michael Novak ties together these crucial questions by explaining the meaning of work as a vocation. Seapower Ashore: 200 Years of Royal Navy Operations on Land by Edited by Captain Peter Hore (£16.50)Publisher: Chatham Publishing — 2001Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1861761554]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs & maps. From the cover: “For most of the age when the Royal Navy dominated the world's oceans, it actually did much of its fighting ashore. From supporting the army during the Napoleonic Wars with its heavy guns, to shore bombardments such as at Acre in 1840 and Sweaborg during the Crimean War, to the landing of naval brigades of marines and bluejackets in Queen Victoria's myriad ‘little wars’, the nineteenth century saw the Royal Navy playing a major part in land warfare. This extended into the twentieth century, with the Royal Naval Division fighting on the Western Front in the First World War, the men of HMS Hood landing their ship's field gun in the ill-fated Norwegian Campaign of 1940, and, very recently, when the submarine HMS Splendid fired Britain's first Tomahawk cruise missiles at land targets in the former Yugoslavia in 1999. A group of eminent naval historians has been assembled to describe this vital element of the Royal Navy's role which has so often been overshadowed by the fleet actions of Nelson's time, and of the First and Second World Wars.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¾". Edwardian Requiem: A Life of Sir Edward Grey by Michael Waterhouse (£14.50)Publisher: London: Biteback Publishing — 2013Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 9781849544436]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Contains: Black & white photographs; Maps;

From the cover: “Best remembered for his portentous remark at the outbreak of the Great War, ‘The lamps are going out all over Europe. We shall not see them lit again in our lifetime’, Sir Edward Grey was a consummate Edwardian politician and one of the most notable statesmen of an era abounding with them.

In the first biography of Grey in forty years, Michael Waterhouse vividly depicts a man full of contradictions. Deep in his heart he was a country-loving fisherman, a sensitive naturalist and ornithologist who preferred reading Wordsworth to giving speeches in his constituency and answering questions on foreign policy in the House. Yet it fell to this peace-loving gentleman who rarely left his shores to ask his country to go to war with Germany.

Grey spent nearly thirty years in Parliament and only reluctantly became Foreign Secretary of a country that presided over the greatest empire the world had seen since Roman times.

Yet it was a position he filled for more than a decade, the longest anyone has ever served continuously in his or any age, firstly under Campbell-Bannerman and then Asquith. During this time he battled relentlessly to protect and advance the interests of his country against the volatile backdrop of a Europe in which the balance of power was tilting wildly.

Edwardian Requiem is the remarkable portrait of a complex and enigmatic politician who presided over the twilight of old Europe.”

From the cover: “First “published” in 1921, The Thackery T. Lambshead Pocket Guide to Eccentric & Discredited Diseases was for

several years disseminated to doctors around the world in the form of loose-leaf carbon copies and photocopies. During the 1930s, the cannery and medical publisher Trimble Fisheries, Ltd. , published the Guide. Since then, London’s Chatto & Windus, Jolly Boy Publishing & Soap (Bombay), and Boojum Press (California) have had the honour of providing the Guide to thankful medical students and doctors. Today, Night Shade Books is proud to publish this special 83rd Commemorative Edition, complete with excerpts from prior editions.

From Freetown to Istanbul, Timbuktu to Ulan Bator, the Guide has proven its worth under less than ideal conditions. When a doctor lost in the Congo rainforests with only a few antibiotics and feral pygmy elephants for company cannot diagnose his odd spinal condition, he reaches for his handy copy of the Guide. When a family practice doctor cannot understand why a patient of 30 years with no history of mental defect suddenly begins to mimic inanimate objects, she turns to the reliable Lambshead Pocket Guide.”

Louis XIV: The Other Side of the Sun by Prince Michael of Greece (£13.50)Publisher: Orbis Publishing — 1983Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0856135143]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Penning to the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight otherwise.Description: From the cover: “Louis XIV, whose great prestige earned him the title of ‘the Sun King’, is the most famous of all the French kings. He ruled France in one of its most glorious periods, and remains to this day the supreme symbol of absolute monarchy. Now, in a brilliant new biography, Prince Michael of Greece has revealed a darker side to the Sun King. Drawing on detailed evidence from contemporary records, letters and memoirs, he explored the possibility that, underneath it all, this epitome of kingship was a shy, weak, unstable man of unexpected and intriguing complexity. Prince Michael assesses the continued and enduring influence of Cardinal Mazarin and Louis’ mother, Anne of Austria, on the little boy who came to the throne at the age of five but who learnt early on to hide his profound insecurity behind the ever more elaborate trappings of monarchy.

Here, then, is a vivid portrait of a not particularly intelligent king, secretly poring over textbooks, preferring to command sieges rather than battles because they were more convenient, whose voracious sexual appetite right into his seventies flouted the very conventions he himself tried to impose on a reluctant court at Versailles. Without simply debunking Louis, Prince Michael of Greece succeeds in presenting an iconoclastic biography which shatters many of the accepted myths about the man and his century. The result is a glimpse of the human frailties and inadequacies that lay behind the arrogance, protocol and pageantry of France’s greatest king.”
