The Handyman In The Home: In 3 Volumes by Edited by Arthur W. Judge (£40.00)Publisher: Caxton Publishing Company — 1956Binding: Hardback Condition: Very Good. Pages lightly age-tanned otherwise a pleasant set.Description: September Reprint of the 2nd Edition. [First: 1930] Illustrated with black and white photographs & diagrams. From the preface: “As its title indicates, this work has been prepared expressly for the practical handyman desirous of undertaking a wide variety of jobs connected with the home, garden, garage and small workshop, including not only the domestic repairs and renovations that become necessary from time to time but also useful improvements and additions to the home and its contents. The keen home dweller, with a knowledge of the use of the simple tools and materials described in these volumes, can not only tackle most household repairs and additions expeditiously, but also avoid a good deal of expense. Apart from these considerations, there is always the satisfaction associated with the completion of a job that would otherwise have meant calling in someone else for the purpose. In addition to the extensive range of household repairs, fittings, furniture and other relevant items dealt with in this work, there are also a number of sections, including those on homecrafts, hobbies, sports accessories, outdoor constructions, etc., which will be found both useful and profitable to the handyman and housewife. Since many of the articles in these volumes deal with woodwork repairs and new constructions, it was considered desirable to include a comprehensive section, written by a well-known expert in such matters, on the subject of carpentry and woodworking tools, so that the reader who is not very well acquainted with the use of the latter can improve both his knowledge and experience.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 7". The Marsh Arabs by Wilfred Thesiger (£31.00)Publisher: London: Longmans — 1964Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Good+ — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Edges of the dust wrapper somewhat frayed at the spine ends and corners. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned and musty.Description: Contains a glossary of terms. 2nd impression. [First Edition: 1964] Illustrated by way of: Black & White Plates; Maps;

From the cover: “This is a book which rivals Arabian Sands in excellence. Wilfred Thesiger has again written a classic, a work of unique interest and value.

The book is about the tribes that live in the Marshes of Iraq, around the junction of the Tigris and Euphrates. This area, covering some 6,000 square miles, is now closed to travellers and no previous explorer has had any experience of it comparable to the author’s. Soon these marshes will probably be drained and a way of life which has lasted for thousands of years will disappear. Wilfred Thesiger lived among these people for eight years, and there is hardly a village, however small, in the Central Marshes that he has not visited. It is a landscape of islands, some of them floating, many of them man-made; of lakes and waterways; where the reed houses are of a unique and impressive architecture; where the economy of the inhabitants is based largely on their herds of water-buffalo. They fish, shoot wildfowl, and hunt the enormous and dangerous wild pigs that ravage their crops. Wilfred Thesiger, travelling from village to village, with his medicine boxes and his team of canoemen, knows these people and their way of life intimately.

There are times of excitement and hardship, accidents, pig hunts, blood feuds; there are episodes of tragedy and happiness, and moments of pure comedy. Not only does Wilfred Thesiger evoke with great beauty the landscape and its teeming wild life, but we come to know the people, many of them individually, whose life he shares, the sheikhs who are his friends, his canoemen and their families. Few travel books have described an area and its inhabitants with such knowledge, and in such interesting and informative detail.

In addition to maps, there are 110 superb photographs, taken by the author, which form an indispensable supplement to the text.

The Marsh Arabs confirms the opinions expressed of Arabian Sands, that, both as traveller and writer, Wilfred Thesiger is to be compared with Burton, Doughty and T. E. Lawrence.”

Accident and Emergency Radiology: A Survival Guide by Nigel Raby, Laurence Berman & Gerald de Lacey (£26.00)Publisher: W. B. Saunders Company — 1999Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0702019054]Condition: Near Fine. Description: A Later Printing. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Diagrams;

From the cover: “Junior doctors in the Accident and Emergency Department will find this an invaluable pocket book to assist them when assessing radiographs. It provides a concise and systematic approach whereby most radiographic abnormalities are readily and easily detected.

This book concentrates on radiological abnormalities which are significant, but frequently overlooked by the inexperienced doctor, who may have to make a clinical decision without the help of a radiologist. The majority of chapters follow a similar template and describe:
  • normal and relevant radiological anatomy
  • a systematic scheme for viewing the radiographs
  • common diagnostic pitfalls and sources of error
The book is based on a course developed over the many years that the authors have been teaching radiology to non-radiologists. Whilst it has been written primarily for the Accident and Emergency junior doctor, it also offers the trainee radiologist and orthopaedic surgeon an excellent primer of accident and emergency radiology.”

Community Health Nursing: Primary Health Care in Practice by Anne McMurray (£21.00)Publisher: Churchill Livingstone — 1990Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 9780443042102]Condition: Very Good. Edges of the text block lightly spotted.Description: From the cover: “Community health nursing is the interface between primary health care and the more traditional, illness-oriented structures of service delivery. It involves empowering the individual to achieve wellness.

In this book, Anne McMurray blends theory with an international perspective to analyse the role, scope, and function of the community health nurse. The political contexts of this increasingly important nursing role and the issue of accountability in practice are also addressed. She encourages the reader to embrace an holistic approach; the emphasis is on the nurse as mediator, educator, and facilitator.

Community Health Nursing: primary health care in practice shows how the goal of culturally sensitive, self-determined health care can be achieved.”

The Human Factor in Aircraft Accidents by David Beaty (£19.00)Publisher: London: The Scientific Book Club — 1969Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded. Bruised at the tail of the spine. Pages lightly age-tanned with heavier offset to the endpapers. Description: Illustrated by way of: Appendices [2]; Diagrams;

From the cover: “Although considerable progress has been made in increasing the reliability of airplanes, very little has been accomplished in reducing the element of human error in aircraft accidents.

So said the first International Civil Aviation Organisation’s first volume of accident reports seventeen years ago. But in the interim the view that human error accidents are inevitable has prevailed. It is this view that David Beaty attacks in The Human Factor in Aircraft Accidents. Investigating into an almost totally unexplored area, he has related aircraft accidents to known psychological concepts of fatigue, perception, laterality, conflict, frustration, learning and decision-taking.

This book takes a cool scientific look at the whole problem. Not at all sensational, but none the less of exciting interest, it tells the stories of aircraft accidents and interprets them in psychological terms. And at the same time, it suggests the prospect that, if psychological factors were properly investigated and better understood, a considerable cut would be effected in the now, rising aircraft accident rate.”

Gardening Women: Their Stories from 1600 to the Present by Catherine Horwood (£14.00)Publisher: Virago — 2010Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 1844084639]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Price Clipped. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Plates; Black & White Drawings; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “From Flora, Roman goddess of plants, to today’s gardeners at Kew, women have always gardened. Women gardeners have grown vegetables for their kitchens and herbs for their medicine cupboards. They have been footnotes in the horticultural annals for specimens collected abroad. They taught young women about gardening twenty-five years before women’s horticultural schools officially existed. And their influence on the style of our gardens, frequently unacknowledged, survives to the present day.

Catherine Horwood brings to life the care with which Thomasin Tunstall sent her hellebores to John Parkinson for his new plot in Covent Garden in the 1620s, and the passion of Lady Mary Coke in designing her garden at Notting Hill House in George Ill’s reign. She salutes the determination of intrepid plant collectors, from Lady Amherst, who brought the glorious Clematis Montana to England, to the Victorian widow who protected a euphorbia inside her hatbox on its journey home, a variety now known as Mrs Robb’s Bonnet.”

The Body In Question by Jonathan Miller (£14.00)Publisher: Book Club Associates — 1980Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper. Leans a little. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs; Black & White Drawings; Diagrams;

From the cover: “Jonathan Miller, co-author and a star of the world-famous revue Beyond the Fringe, director of films, plays and, most recently, of operas, qualified as a medical doctor in 1959 and has held a research fellowship in the history of medicine at University College, London. In his remarkable new book, as in the 13-part B. B. C. television series with which it is linked, Dr Miller considers the functioning of the body as a subject of private experience. He explores our attitudes towards the body, our astonishing ignorance about certain parts of it and inability to read its signals.

We are mystified to experience pain in internal organs like the heart or the liver when neither the quality nor the location of the sensation gives a coherent indication of what is going wrong. And to complicate matters we feel the pain in some spot other than the seat of the mischief. But pain, he says, is not the only thing that prompts a person to go through the elaborate social process of ‘falling ill’. It might be finding something — not intrinsically painful, but alarming — like a lump in the breast, or embarrassing, like a drooping eyelid, or inhibiting to efficiency like a tremor which prompts the decision. At some point the discomfort, alarm, embarrassment or inconvenience begins to obstruct the flow of ordinary life and ‘falling ill’ is the choice we make as a result of feeling unacceptably odd.

Dr Miller considers the varieties of pathological experience and the physical foundations of disease, the types of individuals man has historically attributed with the power of healing and the assumptions of modern medical diagnosis by which a doctor may translate a patient’s account of his ‘dis-ease’ into the scientific principles of disease. His explanations are so lucid, so wide-ranging and so whole-heartedly entertaining it is often hard to believe one is reading about the facts of one’s own body and what can go wrong with it. His use of metaphor and suggestive models, particularly when tracing the historical development of certain leading ideas in human physiology, is highly stimulating. Above all, there is the keen originality and sheer enthusiasm of Dr Miller’s approach to his subject which makes The Body in Question such an outstanding book.”

The Thackery T. Lambshead Pocket Guide to Eccentric and Discredited Diseases by Dr. Jeff Vandermeer & Dr. Mark Roberts (£14.00)Publisher: Night Shade Books — 2003Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper is slightly pulled at the head of both panel, exacerbated by a gentle spring to both boards. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Drawings;

From the cover: “First “published” in 1921, The Thackery T. Lambshead Pocket Guide to Eccentric & Discredited Diseases was for

several years disseminated to doctors around the world in the form of loose-leaf carbon copies and photocopies. During the 1930s, the cannery and medical publisher Trimble Fisheries, Ltd. , published the Guide. Since then, London’s Chatto & Windus, Jolly Boy Publishing & Soap (Bombay), and Boojum Press (California) have had the honour of providing the Guide to thankful medical students and doctors. Today, Night Shade Books is proud to publish this special 83rd Commemorative Edition, complete with excerpts from prior editions.

From Freetown to Istanbul, Timbuktu to Ulan Bator, the Guide has proven its worth under less than ideal conditions. When a doctor lost in the Congo rainforests with only a few antibiotics and feral pygmy elephants for company cannot diagnose his odd spinal condition, he reaches for his handy copy of the Guide. When a family practice doctor cannot understand why a patient of 30 years with no history of mental defect suddenly begins to mimic inanimate objects, she turns to the reliable Lambshead Pocket Guide.”

Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the edges. Gently faded at the spine. Leans. Pages lightly age-tanned.Description: From the cover: “The touch of her hands can heal. Or can it? Pinkie Proudfoot is only a child, but to some people she seems to have this extraordinary gift, so they set up the Foundation of Harmony to help her make use of it. But to Barry Evans, a sixteen-year-old who had struck up an odd friendship with Pinkie when they were both still at school, it seems that the Foundation really exists to exploit Pinkie, and her gift, and the sick people who pay large fees to come there. When he learns what the Foundation is doing to Pinkie, he decides that by hook or by crook he must get her out. But is that his only reason? Or does he too want to take Pinkie over in order to solve his own problem, a threat inside himself quite as dangerous as anything that he has to cope with in the ‘real’ world? This is a strange and powerful adventure, but much more than that. As usual with a book by Peter Dickinson, the ideas are as exciting as the events of the story.”Notes: Jacket designed by Alun Hood. As the medical profession's power becomes eroded by bureaucratisation, authoritarian attitudes and a reliance on drugs and high-tech surgery, patients are demanding more than a narrowly scientific approach to their health problems.Notes: Foreword or introduction by HRH The Prince of Wales. The Irritable Bowel Syndrome Source Book by Laura O'Hare (£13.00)Publisher: Contemporary Books — 2001Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0737305533]Condition: Near Fine.Description: From the cover: “Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common gastrointestinal complaints. It is classified as a functional disorder because it can be neither detected through standard medical testing nor linked to any specific structural or biochemical cause. Therefore, IBS is diagnosed only through the presence of symptoms such as pain and cramps, gas and bloating, diarrhoea, or constipation. Such symptoms can be extremely debilitating, making IBS a leading cause of worker absenteeism, second only to the common cold. Irritable bowel syndrome is also referred to as spastic colon, mucous colitis, spastic colitis, nervous stomach, or irritable colon. Although it is diagnosed most frequently in women from early adulthood to midlife, anyone can have IBS, including children. All sufferers seem to experience a common frustration because symptoms are frequently embarrassing and seem to arise without warning. Moreover, the search for a solution can be an anxious, disheartening experience that concludes with a vague diagnosis and a trial-and-error approach to treatment. In The Irritable Bowel Syndrome Sourcebook, you will learn: About the normal functioning of the gastrointestinal tract; How the symptoms of IBS are diagnosed and misdiagnosed; How to identify your own dietary and environmental triggers for IBS, including food allergies and food sensitivity; How to manage IBS triggers through food restriction plans and changes in your “eating lifestyle”; How to identify and manage the stress and depression that can also trigger IBS; The link between IBS and other conditions, such as fibromyalgia, nonulcer dyspepsia, acute and bacterial gastroenteritis, and globus hystericus; The role that alcohol abuse or dependence plays in the syndrome; Alternative therapies, including herbal medicine, meditation, acupuncture, biofeedback, hypnosis, and creative visualization.”Notes: Size: 9" x 6". 166 pages. From the cover: “The twentieth century — a hundred years of creation and destruction such as mankind has never experienced before. For many people the changes witnessed are limited to recent years, or even the post-war period — but what of those few who've seen it all? In this unique and fascinating book, Hunter Davies tells the life stories of twenty-one people who were born in 1900 — from all walks of life, all parts of the country, all occupations, known and unknown, successful and not so successful, all of whom have survived two world wars and experienced technological changes and new social attitudes which would have been inconceivable to anyone who had lived through any other century. Among them are a miner, a doctor, a factory worker, a West End actress, a Cambridge professor and, of course, the Queen Mother.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". Combat Kill: The Drama of Aerial Warfare in World War 2 and the Controversy Surrounding Victories by Hugh Morgan & Jürgen Seibel (£12.50)Publisher: Patrick Stephens — 1997Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1852605367]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Jacket illustration: Stills taken from RAF gun camera footage illustrating the final moments leading to the destruction of a Bf 109. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Colour Drawings; Tables;

From the cover: “Just how did fighter pilots make their claims for the destruction of enemy aircraft and by what process were these claims submitted and verified? How were young pilots trained to fly fighters and what training in combat tactics did they receive? Was any account taken of the immense psychological stress faced by fighter pilots, and by what guidelines were awards and decorations made? These, and many other intriguing aspects of aerial combat, are exhaustively explored here, with answers drawn from primary sources, both from the Allied and the Axis powers’ points of view.

Combat Kill is a revealing ‘from the cockpit’ account of aerial warfare from the fighter pilot’s perspective. British, American, German, Italian, Soviet and Finnish aces from all theatres of action in the Second World War detail their experiences, with particular reference to how their claims to have shot down enemy aircraft were established. The psychological impact of deadly combat, and the awards process for those that proved successful against their adversaries are also examined.

More than a hundred contemporary photographs from official archives as well as private collections are included. A superb set of colour three-view drawings by John Weal, one of the world’s leading profile artists, illustrates a selection of aircraft flown by the aces.”

Hospital of the Nation: Story of Spa Medicine and the Mineral Hospital At Bath by Roger Rolls (£12.50)Publisher: Bath: Bird Publications — 1988Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0951321900]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Appendices [2]; Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Colour Photographs; Colour Plates;

From the cover: “Of all English spas, Bath has enjoyed the greatest reputation as a medical centre for treating rheumatic diseases with its naturally hot mineral water having a healing tradition originating in the mist of antiquity with the legendary story of Bladud, the prince who cured himself of leprosy by bathing in the hot springs.

For centuries, the inexhaustible flow of the Bath waters turned the city into a haven for invalids and a magnet for doctors. The pursuit of health became Bath’s most important industry. In 1738, Britain’s first national specialist hospital was founded in the city, drawing patients from the far-flung corners of the kingdom with illnesses which would benefit from spa treatment. Known best as the Mineral Water Hospital, it is still thriving as the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases and is nowadays an internationally famous institution for the research and treatment of these crippling disorders.

Published to coincide with the hospital’s 250th anniversary, this lavishly illustrated book has something to interest everyone -from the follies and foibles of eccentric governors and doctors to indecent practices and curious cures. On a more serious level, the author discusses possible reasons for the success of mineral water treatment and gives an insight into life in an eighteenth century hospital.”

Structure and Function of Cells: A Text for Students in Medicine and Science by Colin R. Hopkins (£12.50)Publisher: W. B. Saunders Company — 1978Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0721647758]Condition: Very Good.Description: From the author’s preface: “The book is intended primarily for students who have a background of school biology and who are taking concurrent courses in biochemistry and physiology. As a brief, contemporary assessment of the field, it should also provide a useful basis for later courses in pharmacology, histopathology, immunology and experimental medicine in general. However, although the approach is clearly directed at the eukaryotic system as typified by the cells of mammalian tissues, it will be read without difficulty by students in life science who lack a strong medical bias. It is with these students in mind that a glossary has been included.”Notes: Size: 9¾" x 7". [XIII] 266 pages.
