Back to the Drawing Board: Aircraft That Flew But Never Took Off by Bill Gunston (£44.00)Publisher: Motorbooks International — 1996Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0760303169]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Diagrams;

From the cover: “An aircraft designer would, quite obviously, never design an aeroplane that he felt would be either dangerous or unsuitable for its purpose. But designers are so often the victims of accountant’s reports, committee recommendations and severe movement of the goal-posts, that the end-product that takes to the air bears little resemblance to his original concept. This book is a study of some of the examples that, for some reason, became notorious for their inability to fulfil their raison d’etre.

Each aircraft that is included is looked at in depth from several aspects. What was the intended purpose of the aeroplane? Why did the designer reach his conclusion? Why did the machine fail to live up to expectations? The answers to these questions makes for fascinating reading and gives a tantalising insight into the world of aircraft design and construction over the last century.”

Commodore 64: Exploring Graphics by S. Gray; M. D. Holmes; (£25.50)Publisher: Glentop Publishers — 1985Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0907792502]Condition: Very Good. Gently rubbed at the edges of the spine and wrappers.Description: No. 2 in the series. First in this, paperback, edition. From the cover: “This book teaches the reader how to use the Commodore 64’s graphics features. It assumes that the reader is already fairly competent in BASIC programming. Each new principle is introduced step by step, beginning with PEEK and POKE (Chapter One) and ending with sprite collision routines (Chapter Five). On the way, the reader explores bit-map mode, multicolour bit-map mode, extended colour mode, character design and sprite design. At every stage the points are illustrated with clear, easy-to-follow examples. Four major programs are developed in the book: two games and two utilities. The first game is called ‘Breakout’, a bat and ball game used to illustrate the use of the Commodore’s screen and colour memory locations. The second game is called ‘Target’ and uses sprites to provide a challenging and tricky game. The two utilities, ‘Char.Gen’ and ‘sprite.Gen’ are used for designing characters and sprites respectively. Commodore 64 programmers will need only a little imagination to realise the vast potential that these tools offer.”Notes: Size: 10¼" x 6¾". In the Watson's Workbooks series. Steam: An Evocative Tribute to the Last Days of Steam Trains by Colin Garratt (£21.00)Publisher: London: Bounty Books — 2006Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 9780753713990]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and the top corners of the boards with commensurate wear to the dust wrapper. Text complete, clean and tight but the last leaf slightly mis-trimmed at the bottom corner. Description: Contains: Colour photographs;

From the cover: “This book is the finest visual tribute to the steam locomotive ever published. Colin Garratt’s text and photography reflects his unique odyssey to document, in pictures and words, the Last Steam Locomotives of the World. With hundreds of matchless photographs, this book vividly portrays real working steam eking out its final moments amid the great landscapes of the world.

No preserved or tourist revival trains appear within these pages for they lie outside the scope of Colin Garratt’s work. The vast majority of locomotives depicted in this book will be, or more likely have been, broken up. This book covers all continents and includes subjects from all the main schools of locomotive design, vividly depicted in every conceivable mood and environment.

The steam locomotive is a sensuous and beautiful creation. It is the one truly living machine and Colin Garratt’s unparalleled photography captures every nuance of its personality. In the course of his expeditions, he has visited some of the remotest places on earth and some of the adventures described in words in this volume are truly breathtaking. He continues to scour the ends of the earth in search of imperilled survivors.”

Sharks Among Minnows: Germany's First Fighter Pilots and the Fokker Eindecker Period, July 1915 to September 1916 by Norman Franks (£19.50)Publisher: London: Grub Street — 2001Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1902304926]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Pages lightly age-tanned. Description: Illustrated by way of: Appendices [4]; Black & White Photographs; Maps; Tables;

From the cover: “In early 1915, with the world war in its infancy, the attention of Allied and German air strategists was focussed on trying to stop each other making reconnaissances and artillery observation sorties over the lines. Various ingenious schemes met with limited success, then suddenly in the summer of 1915 there was a breakthrough for the Germans — the arrival at the front of the Fokker Eindecker.

Its advantage was the synchronised machine gun firing through the whirling blades of the propeller — a revolution in contemporary air fighting. Those German pilots disposed to flying these first single-seat aeroplanes, if successful, soon became famous and the first aces. Names such as Boelcke, Immelmann, Wintgens, Parschau, Mulzer, Hohndorf, Frankl and von Althaus quickly became the first heroes to the German public and the first winners of the coveted Pour le Merits — the famed Blue Max.

These men and others caused havoc amongst British and French airmen over the Western Front for just over a year, something history has called the ‘Fokker Scourge’. Although comparatively small in numbers, they were deadly when attacking lightly armed, almost defenceless British and French aeroplanes; truly ‘sharks among minnows’.

Norman Franks has covered this period in detail, bringing to light new information and insights, and explaining how these early German fighter pilots achieved their kills, who they shot down, when and where. Contains many rare and previously unpublished photos.”

The Road to Prosperity: An Industrial Policy by Ernest Marples (£19.50)Publisher: Staples Press — 1947Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with a triangular tear to the head of the spine, short closed tear to the foot of the same and soiling to the lower panel. Top edge of the text block tanned. Tanning to the blanks and endpapers. Text complete, clean and tight otherwise.Description: From the cover: “THE ROAD TO PROSPERITYsays this book, is Industrial Co-partnership, the essential ingredients of which are Joint Consultation, Employee Shareholding and Profit Sharing. There can be no true Co-partnership whenever these three features are not working in effective combination.

The author argues that Co-partnership is the key to production, and therefore to prosperity. He rests this claim on the belief that, though human beings need material incentives to labour, they need also a satisfying spiritual climate in which to perform their labours. This satisfaction cannot be attained unless all concerned, from highest to lowest, feel for their enterprise not only an essential responsibility, but a common pride and pleasure in its success. When all have become partners, sharing the rewards and, within limits, the risks of what they do, a new relationship arises between them and a new sense of their fellowship as men. Thus, in every undertaking, spiritual and material incentives can be made to work in the same direction, and the resulting benefit will accrue not only to man as consumer but to man as man.

The author denies that there is anything Utopian in this, and the body of the book is mainly concerned to show what are the points to be watched in establishing a scheme of Industrial Co-partnership, what dangers must be avoided and what precautions taken. He draws freely on the experience of many concerns which are already operating such schemes successfully, and has reproduced in outline some of the more notable. Nor is he content, like so many, to put his trust in exhortation alone, but, like a practical statesman, suggests a way by which the tax machine can coax both sides of industry into the practice of Co-partnership.

As a politician in a democracy, he seeks also to recommend his ideas politically. They accord, he maintains, with the true philosophy of Conservatism, namely, the spreading of power and property in many independent hands, as against the Socialist philosophy, which is the centralisation of both in the small area of London known genetically as Whitehall.”

Developing Your Latent Powers: Thirty Practical Steps to Spiritual Satisfaction by Frederick R. [Robert] Gould (£18.00)Publisher: Robert B. Luce Co. Inc. — 1976Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good+ — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Heavily faded at the spine. Price Clipped. Leans. Previous owners' inscription to the pastedown. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: From the cover: “Developing Your Latent Powers is a practical approach to a way of life that is appealing more and more in the Western World today. It is a statement of a philosophy of life that synthesises elements of Hinduist and Buddhist thought with guidance to those who wish to be less tied to the mechanistic type of life and are aiming at greater spiritual satisfaction. It blends Eastern wisdom with Western knowledge, always avoiding the obfuscation which is common to both.

Readers are told quite frankly of the difficulties that face them in the search for enlightenment, and the exercises, always basic, will help students to attain a positive state of mind: a poise and a glad philosophy. The way of thought and the exercises Frederick Gould describes are not unfamiliar to many people in the West now that the meditative form of philosophic occultism is becoming increasingly popular. Most writing on the subject, though, is hardly easy reading.

Frederick Gould, who describes himself as a ‘humble student’, writes with long experience as a teacher, and the lucidity of his style makes the book readable without tears. He believes the kind of thinking his course advocates is urgently needed in a purposeless age that is the headache following on a night of materialist intoxication — one that has reduced man to servitude to a machine in material life and to the status of machine itself in his spiritual one. But he believes there is another path, another outlook, which he has tested and which has illumined his own life.”

From the cover: “The third and final volume of the trilogy beginning with Medieval Warfare, and continuing with The Rise of Modern Warfare, is Modern Warfare 1815-Present by H W Koch. Medieval Warfare covered the development of weapons, strategy and tactics from the Fall of the Roman Empire to the Thirty Years’ War. The second volume, The Rise of Modern Warfare, covered the period from the end of the Thirty Years’ War in 1648 to the wars of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars. This volume carries the story forward from the Battle of Waterloo and the Congress of Vienna in 1815, through the development of heavy artillery, rapid-fire weapons, such as the machine gun, and other advances of the nineteenth century which presaged the wars of attrition such as World War I through World War II to the present day.

The year-long siege of Sebastopol during the Crimean War and the Siege of Vicksburg during the American Civil War, as well as the Virginia campaigns of Robert E Lee, were precursors of modern total warfare to a far greater extent than Britain’s easy colonial victories in India and Africa fought during the same period. The rapid victories of the Prussian armies of von Moltke over Austria at Koniggratz in 1866 and the French at Sedan in 1870 were the results of a modern massed army fighting against traditional professional armies not greatly advanced from their eighteenth century counterparts. The introduction of the needle gun, the Maxim gun and the Lee-Enfield rifle, combined with the evolution of the tank as a replacement for armoured cavalry were developments bound to change the nature of warfare in the twentieth century.

The war of attrition fought by Britain in South Africa, including the long sieges of Ladysmith and Mafeking, as well as the six-month long siege of Port Arthur during the Russo-Japanese War were portents of a new age in warfare for the warlords of Europe who were to launch World War I. They hoped for a war that would end in weeks. Millions of combatants and civilians alike were slaughtered in the four-year-long war of attrition in Europe between 1914 and 1918. The introduction of aerial warfare and naval blockades, which could starve a nation into submission, made twentieth century warfare unlike any previously encountered. By the time of World War II, whole nations, not merely their armies, found themselves locked in deadly combat for years until one side was worn down into helpless impotence. No one in Europe could escape the effect of the total war that was waged from 1939 to 1945.

The horrendous results of the holocaust which caused the deaths of tens of millions altered the character of warfare once again after World War II. The entire progression from “wars of gentlemen” through total war to the post-1945 age of limited war, including Korea, Algeria and Vietnam, as well as the four wars in the Middle East is described. The limited wars of the post-1945 period were perhaps the precursors of a new, even more terrible form of total conflict should a third world war ever occur.

Illustrated by hundreds of contemporary paintings, action photographs in both color and monochrome, and replete with technical drawings, maps and cutaway illustrations of the relevant weapons as well as special drawings of the uniforms of the period. Modern Warfare should become a classic and essential reading in the library of anyone interested in modern militarv historv.”

The Rise and Fall of Imperial Japan, 1894-1945 by Edited by S. L. Mayer (£16.00)Publisher: Bison Books — 1985Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0861241428]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the edges, short closed and tape-reinforced to the spine ends. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Reprint. [First: 1984 thus, previously published as ‘The Japanese War Machine’ in 1976] Maps to the endpapers. Illustrated with photographs, in colour & black and white. From the cover: “In 1868, Japan emerged from feudalism and civil conflict as a comparatively undeveloped industrial state in an age of European imperialism in East Asia. Within a generation, Japan had risen to the ranks of the foremost industrial and military powers in the Western Pacific. A generation later, Japan had become the paramount power in East Asia, and her naval and air forces spread Japanese power across the Pacific. The formidable weapon built in the name of the Emperor swept across China and Manchuria; her air forces pummelled Pearl Harbor and Darwin; her armies marched to Singapore and the gates of India. Her navies seized some Aleutian islands and strafed the California coast. By 1942 the world had come to know the power of the most devastating force in the Pacific — the Japanese War Machine.

The force and power of the Japanese War Machine is told here by some of the world’s leading experts in guns, tanks, planes, and ships of World War II. The drama of Japan’s seizure of Manchuria, the take-over of the State by the Army, the invasion of China, the simultaneous attack on Malaya, Hawaii, the Philippines and the oil-rich Dutch East Indies is told in all the horror and shock the Japanese invader placed before Western eyes. The fall of Singapore and Hong Kong, the conquest of Burma and Indo-China took place within a hundred days. The flag of the Rising Sun ruled a maritime empire from the Russian border to the gates of Australia, from Burma to Midway.

But the strength of the Japanese War Machine depended on Japanese industrial power, which in the end, was no match for the United States and its Allies. The Japanese soldier, infused with the warrior code of Bushido fought hard and long in New Guinea’s jungles; as the struggle was brought closer to Japan’s home islands, the Japanese soldier fought on tenaciously in the Philippines and on Iwo Jima and Okinawa. The air forces began suicide missions, thekamikaze, which drove into Allied aircraft, heroically and fanatically.. .but all too little, too late. The nuclear holocaust, which ended World War II, left a ruined Japan and a wrecked Japanese War Machine.

THE RISE AND FALL OF IMPERIAL JAPAN is the tragic and noble history of a gallant people led into a misguided war. The millions who suffered in Asia and the Pacific in the wake of the Japanese War Machine bear silent tribute to its folly.”

A few small airships and some forty primitive aeroplanes flew above the transports hourly slipping across to France. It was barely five years since the first flimsy flying machine had flown the Channel at 45 m.p.h., with a destroyer following it in case of engine failure. Yet within a year of the Great War's end a British aeroplane, originally designed to bomb Berlin, had flown the Atlantic direct. Nearly 2,000 miles non-stop in 1919, as compared to 30 miles in 1909. Storming Eagles: German Airborne Forces in World War Two by James Lucas (£14.00)Publisher: Arms & Armour Press — 1988Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. From the cover: “The pilot throttled back — it would not be long now. The light on the bulkhead showed red. It was the signal “make ready!” Two minutes to go. The ‘dispatcher walked along the body of the machine checking that each man’s static line was firmly fixed to the jump wire. By the time he had completed his task the bulkhead light had changed to green. “Ready to jump!” and we moved forward to the exit door on the port side of the aircraft. Two of the Ju crew has already removed the door, and we could feel the air blowing in. Our sergeant would be the first to jump. He stood braced in the doorway looking slightly upwards as per the drill book. He would not have seen that the light on the bulkhead had changed to white, but at the sound of the klaxon horn he flung himself forward and out of the machine, to be followed by the rest of us in quick succession. When each man jumped the Junkers bounced upwards a little in the air as the aircraft load was lightened…

In that exclusive number of elite German fighting formations of the Second World War, the paratroops rank high. During the blitzkrieg of 1940, they spearheaded the attack, dropping from the air to sieze key points — and demonstrating that a new dimension had been added to the science of war.

Their most spectacular success was the invasion and capture of Crete in May 1941. But the cost was terrible: one in four of the paratroopers who dropped on to the island perished. For the rest of the war the parachute troops were used almost exclusively in a ground role. They remained, however, an elite, justifying again and again their great reputation for courage and hard fighting in Russia, North Africa and in Italy. Their dogged defence of Monte Cassino demonstrated their prowess as street fighting specialists; despite intensive bombing, bombardment and infantry assault, they held on to the monastery for more than three months, halting the Allied advance and withdrawing only when the position had been outflanked.

This book provides the first major account of these legendary soldiers, illustrated throughout with photographs collected from a wide range of sources. The author, James Lucas, has researched deep into Allied and captured German archives, and has interviewed many of the leading members of the Fallschirmjaeger units and formations who survived the war.”

Set in the background of the national history the story accelerates down the years — threaded with family problems, humour and drama often lie together, and in later years suspense is rarely absent. The tale is a true one without the cheap device of omitting the unpalatable and it depicts most of the range of human performance from inspiration and genius to utter imbecility. At the end one is left amazed that the firm still stands, but Webster and Horsfall, as it is now known, still remains — battered perhaps, but still on solid rock after two and a half centuries.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". Harleys, Popes and Indian Chiefs: Unfinished Business of the Sixties by Tim Paulson with Frederic Winkowski (£13.50)Publisher: Pavilion — 1994Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1857934903]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Contains a glossary of terms. Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs [inc. 1 4pp fold-0ut]; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “There is nothing so exciting or so liberating as riding a motorbike; for sheer speed, danger and excitement bikes have become the ultimate icons of the late twentieth century.

Harleys, Popes, and Indian Chiefs is the first book devoted exclusively to a pictorial appreciation of shining chrome and metal. Over 150 colour photographs, taken especially for the book, capture the raw energy and excitement of these machines. Each image reveals the splendour of over fifty international models past and present, each with a different story to tell and a unique design to study; such as the 1913 Silent Gray Fellow, the Henderson K, the 1951 Indian Chief Roadmaster, and the 1994 Kawasaki Ninja. The colour photographs are accompanied by archive memorabilia, which set the motorcycles in their historical contexts and chart the evolution of their design.

Also included is a pictorial account of the restoration of a 1934 Ariel VG500 Deluxe carried out over a year of loving care and attention, taking it from a rusty wreck to a gleaming dream machine — an inspirational journey for all enthusiasts.

The popularity of the motorcycle — which has always been strong among the many hardcore collectors — is experiencing a resurgence today among the newly hip; for their aesthetic qualities and the beauty of their design. This celebratory volume will appeal to all enthusiasts who yearn for the open road and who are turned on by the gleam of polished chrome and leather.”

Fighter Pilot: A History and a Celebration by Philip Kaplan (£12.50)Publisher: Aurum Press — 1999Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1854106147]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Colour Photographs; Colour Drawings; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “In an age in which warfare has been dominated by mass armies the fighter pilot is a unique figure, a warrior who fights a duel, one-to-one, against a single opponent. His success or failure-his life or death-depend very largely upon his own courage and skills and upon the quality of the machine that he flies, a machine which has, at every stage of its development, represented the glamorous peak of contemporary technology. It is hardly surprising, then, that the young and dashing fighter ace has become the twentieth-century equivalent of the dragon-slaying knight or the hero of Homeric legend.

In this book Philip Kaplan has created a splendid record and celebration of fighter pilots of many nations, from the First World War aces in their fragile contrivances of fabric and wood to the men and, increasingly, women, who fly the sleek, titanium-clad fighters of today. He examines the reality behind the myths-the chivalrous pilots who refused to shoot at an enemy who had bailed out, the flyers who, out of ammunition, saluted their foe before turning for home — and considers the way in which the media glamorised the image of the fighter pilot. He explains why only a tiny minority of pilots — those in whom the desire for combat overrode everything — accounted for so large a proportion of the victories. He surveys the skills that a successful pilot must have — a natural aptitude for flying, marksmanship, keen eye-sight-and the way in which fighter tactics have developed. He also relates the history of some of the great fighter planes whose names-Spad, Spitfire, Mustang, Me 109, Zero, Sabre, Phantom — have gone down in aviation history.

Fighter Pilot is illustrated throughout with photographs, paintings and memorabilia which evoke the atmosphere in which fighter pilots of the past lived and fought. These pictures, many of them previously unpublished, are in themselves a unique archive. To them Philip Kaplan has added a mass of written material — memoirs, diaries, letters and, in the case of surviving veterans and contemporary pilots, many extensive interviews — which make Fighter Pilot a treasure trove of material for those interested in the history of war and aviation.

But, ultimately, it is the way in which Philip Kaplan has succeeded in capturing the soul of the fighter pilot which makes this book a worthy tribute to the men who lived and died amid that lonely tumult in the skies.”

The Complete Encyclopedia of Rifles & Carbines by A. E. Hartink (£12.50)Publisher: Rebo — 2004Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 9036615127]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: 2nd edition, 1st printing, [First Published: 1997] Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “Mankind has always been fascinated by firearms. Over the centuries, rifles and carbines have been used to wage war, to hunt, and for sport. Most hunters and sports marksmen have at least one rifle or carbine in their collections. You will find most, though not all, of the current makes, models, and calibres in this book. The range produced by arms manufacturers is so huge that some types had of necessity to be omitted, but all the modern, most popular rifles and carbines are dealt with in detail.

This encyclopaedia is a true catalogue of modern rifles and carbines. Starting from the development of the firearm, the author moves on to discuss weapons technology in considerable detail. Safety and the use of firearms are covered in depth. There are full and dear explanations of such technical aspects of firearms as safety catches and locking mechanisms. The types of ammunition suitable for rifles and carbines are also discussed.”

Automation and the Future of Man by S. Demczynski (£11.50)Publisher: George Allen & Unwin — 1964Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good+ — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with spotting to the panels. Price Clipped. Leans. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: From the cover: “The physical dependence of man on his tools and the extent to which they condition his mental outlook, individually and collectively, is already very great and is certain to increase sharply with the further development of automation and automatic data processing. To examine critically this manifold interaction between man and machine is the main purpose of this book. It contends that, in spite of spectacular technical achievements, modern western civilization is basically empty and aimless and that, although we certainly can make some very complex machines, we are largely ignorant about applying them for the true benefit of mankind.

This might seem a rather unusual thesis for an author who is himself an industrial consultant with a scientific and technological background. However, his extensive interests outside his specialisation permit a humanistic view of the technical developments about which he can speak with professional authority. He is also helped by the fact that his background and his personal experiences have given him a first-hand knowledge of the worlds separated by the Iron Curtain. An ex-prisoner from a forced labour camp, his outlook is remarkably free from prejudice when facing a world full of fanatical ideologies, anti-rationalism and thermo-nuclear ballistic missiles. It is a book that may shock but cannot be ignored.”

The archive has grown to be one of the most important of its kind in the world and provides a unique account of life during the Great War.
