Greig Fester: A Story of Reinsurance by Antony Brown (£44.00)Publisher: Granta Editions — 1996Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1857570332]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: Jacket illustration: Map of the earthquake zones of the world illustrating the geography of catastrophes which form the basis of Greig Fester’s business. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Graphs; Tables; Maps to the endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “THE story of Greig Fester is the story of reinsurance — perhaps the most intriguing aspect of international insurance and the one most frequently involved in world news. Reinsurance is the means by which insurance companies insure themselves against the possibility of catastrophic losses. This is why the history of Greig Fester, one of the few Lloyd’s brokers to specialise in reinsurance, is often one of natural disasters ranging from floods and hurricanes to earthquakes. It follows the fortunes of the company formed 75 years ago by a remarkable Scots insurance man, and relates how it was later merged with a cosmopolitan firm whose European connections could hardly have been more in contrast.

Greig Fester: A Story of Reinsurance will, we believe, be a formidable addition to the growing library of books which guide the general reader through the mysterious and fascinating world of international insurance.”

From the cover: “Fifteenth in the Olyslager Auto Library series and the third to deal with British Cars, this volume provides detailed coverage of civilian and military cars of most makes and types produced during the period 1940-1946.

Starting with the final year in which ‘pre-war’ civilian cars were made, albeit in small numbers, the book continues with a survey of cars, armoured cars and car-derived vehicles such as light and heavy utilities which were used by the Armed Forces in World War II, and many of which later found their way to ‘civvy street’.

The final part of the book deals with the first post-war models, many of which were put into production in the latter part of 1945. Most but not all of these were slightly modified pre-war types.”

The Wirral by Alan Brack (£20.50)Publisher: Phillimore & Co. — 1988Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0850336791]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the head of the spine. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Reprint with amendments. [First Edition: 1980] Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the flap: “The Wirral was already an old-established administrative unit at the time of Domesday Book. This book is concerned with all those aspects of the Wirral, whether of history, architecture or landscape, that give the peninsula its individuality. Well known as a writer on the locality, Alan Brack starts with the immense advantage of having lived there nearly all his life. His book is at once scholarly, readable and entertaining. He has studiously avoided the highly romanticised view which has persisted in other accounts of the area and his opening chapter, ‘A Place Apart’, sets the tone for the whole book. There are sections on Birkenhead and Wallasey and on Bebington and Bromborough. An authoritative account of the establishment of Ellesmere Port is followed by a chapter on the Urbanised Districts of Hoylake, Neston and Heswall, on the Urbanised, Unexpected and Purpose-built villages, on the open spaces and on crossing the Mersey. The description of Port Sunlight, with its vignette of Lord Leverhulme, is especially well-informed. Human interest relieves a generally topographical approach through the appearance in the local context of the many notable men and women who have been associated with the Wirral.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". The Efficiency Experts: An Impartial Survey of Management Consultancy by Laura Tatham (£18.00)Publisher: Business Publications — 1964Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the edges, slightly tanned. A nice copy of a not-so-common title.Description: From the cover: “Are management consultants the answer to a businessman’s prayer? Or are they unprincipled rogues who, for an exorbitant fee, tell a company nothing it does not already know and saddle it with a lot of elaborate, unnecessary and expensive procedures?

To answer these extreme questions and many more between, Laura Tatham has obtained first-hand evidence from dozens of consultants and from as many clients, both satisfied and dissatisfied. This book is the result of her inquiries.

An impartial survey, The Efficiency Experts examines in detail what management consultants are, how they work and what they set out to accomplish. It suggests ways in which the businessman can make best use of consultants, and how he can assess whether or not a firm is likely to do a good job. A number of case histories describe both successful and unsuccessful consulting assignments.”

Modern Warfare 1851-Present by H. W. [Hannsjoachim Wolfgang] Koch (£16.00)Publisher: Bison Books — 1985Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0861241282]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper with a diagonal crease to the bottom corner of the upper panel. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Colour Photographs; Black & White Drawings; Colour Drawings; Maps;

From the cover: “The third and final volume of the trilogy beginning with Medieval Warfare, and continuing with The Rise of Modern Warfare, is Modern Warfare 1815-Present by H W Koch. Medieval Warfare covered the development of weapons, strategy and tactics from the Fall of the Roman Empire to the Thirty Years’ War. The second volume, The Rise of Modern Warfare, covered the period from the end of the Thirty Years’ War in 1648 to the wars of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars. This volume carries the story forward from the Battle of Waterloo and the Congress of Vienna in 1815, through the development of heavy artillery, rapid-fire weapons, such as the machine gun, and other advances of the nineteenth century which presaged the wars of attrition such as World War I through World War II to the present day.

The year-long siege of Sebastopol during the Crimean War and the Siege of Vicksburg during the American Civil War, as well as the Virginia campaigns of Robert E Lee, were precursors of modern total warfare to a far greater extent than Britain’s easy colonial victories in India and Africa fought during the same period. The rapid victories of the Prussian armies of von Moltke over Austria at Koniggratz in 1866 and the French at Sedan in 1870 were the results of a modern massed army fighting against traditional professional armies not greatly advanced from their eighteenth century counterparts. The introduction of the needle gun, the Maxim gun and the Lee-Enfield rifle, combined with the evolution of the tank as a replacement for armoured cavalry were developments bound to change the nature of warfare in the twentieth century.

The war of attrition fought by Britain in South Africa, including the long sieges of Ladysmith and Mafeking, as well as the six-month long siege of Port Arthur during the Russo-Japanese War were portents of a new age in warfare for the warlords of Europe who were to launch World War I. They hoped for a war that would end in weeks. Millions of combatants and civilians alike were slaughtered in the four-year-long war of attrition in Europe between 1914 and 1918. The introduction of aerial warfare and naval blockades, which could starve a nation into submission, made twentieth century warfare unlike any previously encountered. By the time of World War II, whole nations, not merely their armies, found themselves locked in deadly combat for years until one side was worn down into helpless impotence. No one in Europe could escape the effect of the total war that was waged from 1939 to 1945.

The horrendous results of the holocaust which caused the deaths of tens of millions altered the character of warfare once again after World War II. The entire progression from “wars of gentlemen” through total war to the post-1945 age of limited war, including Korea, Algeria and Vietnam, as well as the four wars in the Middle East is described. The limited wars of the post-1945 period were perhaps the precursors of a new, even more terrible form of total conflict should a third world war ever occur.

Illustrated by hundreds of contemporary paintings, action photographs in both color and monochrome, and replete with technical drawings, maps and cutaway illustrations of the relevant weapons as well as special drawings of the uniforms of the period. Modern Warfare should become a classic and essential reading in the library of anyone interested in modern militarv historv.”

Italy by Herbert Ypma (£15.50)Publisher: Thames & Hudson — 2002Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0500283478]Condition: Near Fine.Description: Illustrated with colour photographs. From the cover: “For this new volume of Hip Hotels, Herbert Ypma has ventured far beyond the rolling hills of Tuscany, the postcard-perfect Amalfi Coast, or the Grand Tour destinations of Venice, Florence and Rome, to introduce real discoveries in under-explored regions like Puglia, Basilicata and Le Marche. You might be inspired to visit the utterly refined Hotel Raya on the Aeolian island of Panarea, from whose all-white terraces you can watch the volcano of Stromboli spurt fiery lava into the night skies. At the opposite end of the country, in the ultra-stylish ski town of Cortina d’Ampezzo, is Hotel de la Poste, run today by the same family as when Hemingway used to drive up from Venice in the early 1930s. Or if you prefer the beach life and night life of the Adriatic Coast, then fashion designer Alberta Ferretti’s Carducci 76 makes a superslick base. Many hotels are a complete surprise: ancient cave-dwellings in the eroded rocky landscape of Basilicata, or the trulli of Puglia, centuries-old igloo-like constructions with conical slate roofs. And whether cave, abbey, olive mill, fishing hut or barefoot beachside palazzo, every one of these unique hotels is true to its locale in architecture, design and gastronomy.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 8". Can Any Mother Help Me? by Jenna Bailey (£14.50)Publisher: Faber & Faber — 2007Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0571233139]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “In 1935, a young woman wrote a letter to the women’s magazine Nursery World:

‘Can any mother help me? I live a very lonely life as I have no near neighbours. I cannot afford to buy a wireless. I adore reading, but with no library am very limited with books … I know it is bad to brood and breed hard thoughts and resentment. Can any reader suggest an occupation that will intrigue me and exclude “thinking” and cost nothing!’

Women from all over the country wrote back expressing similar frustrations. They were full of ideas and opinions but had nowhere to express them. So they decided to start a private magazine.

The Cooperative Correspondence Club -or CCC as it quickly became known — was a place for these women to describe the subjects close to their heart: the pain and elation of childbirth, the difficulties during wartime, or the struggles and comedies of daily routine. None of the women anticipated the way that the magazine would come to play such an important part in their lives.

In Can Any Mother Help Me?Jenna Bailey presents the extraordinary group of wives and mothers whose lives connected through a magazine. Her book is an intimate and moving collection of personal stories and, above all, a portrait of inseparable friendships.”

Travels with Queen Victoria by Sarah Ferguson & Benita Stoney (£14.50)Publisher: Weidenfeld & Nicolson — 1993Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper with a stain, on the reverse, to the foot of the upper panel not affecting the board. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs [120]; Black & White Drawings [50]; Genealogical Tables;

From the cover: “HRH The Duchess of York, Benita Stoney and photographer Robin Matthews set out on a royal adventure story, a journey back into the past, retracing Queen Victoria’s travels abroad to state and family occasions throughout Europe. We catch entertaining glimpses of her engaging character through many colourful and amusing letters, her assiduously kept journals and private sketchbooks which describe the people she met, the places she visited and the events of the day. Professional watercolour artists were commissioned to paint the highlights of her travels from balls and picnics to picturesque views, castles and grand houses, and one of the unknown delights of her reign is this treasure trove of watercolours and drawings preserved in sumptuously bound volumes at Windsor Castle.

The authors have immersed themselves in Queen Victoria’s travel library to reconstruct the journeys and create their own itinerary. They have followed routes she took by horse and carriage, and on the new and rapidly expanding railways of Europe. They have traced her in Rhincland palaces and fortresses, and in forgotten castles deep in middle Europe. Looking for her memory in the resorts of the French Riviera and on the Italian lakes, they visited the grand villas and chateaux, some now crumbling, some still resplendent, where the Queen enjoyed the pleasures, new to her era, of holidays in the south.

The text mingles Victoria’s descriptions with the authors’ impressions of place and period, while the illustrations juxtapose contemporary photographs and Victorian watercolours to startling effect. Primarily the record of a modern adventure, the book provides a fascinating insight into the Victorian past.”

Arabian Nights: The Book of a Thousand Nights and a Night Selected by Antony Atha from the Illustrated Benares Edition by Richard F. Gently bruised at the spine ends and corners with commensurate wear to the dust wrapper. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Drawings [16];

From the cover: “To celebrate the centenary of the publication of the first volume of Sir Richard Burton’s famous 17 volume translation of the Arabian Nights in 1885, this edition is the first of two volumes collecting together over 70 of the best known tales.

The origins of the Arabian Nights are lost in antiquity. First translated into a European language by the Frenchman Antoine Galland in the 18th century, many of the characters in the stories have become household names. Versions of Aladdin and his Lamp and Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves appear in countless children’s books and are performed as pantomimes every Christmas, and the same is true of many others. But the simple fairytale element of the Arabian Nights can be exaggerated. As Burton himself said ‘viewed as a whole they are a drama of Eastern life, and a Dance of Death made sublime by faith and the highest emotions, by the certainty of expiation and the fullness of atoning equity. They form a phantasmagoria in which angels and archangels, devils and goblins, men of air, of fire, of water, naturally mingle with men of earth… All the splendour and squalor, the beauty and baseness, the glamour and grotesqueness… of Oriental life are here: it pictures the three great Arab passions, love, war and fancy; and still more, by adding Fiction to Fact the genius of the storyteller quickens the dry bones of history and revives the dead past. Truly they form one of the monuments of world literature.

To preserve the chronology of the original the stories in this edition are printed virtually in the order in which they first appeared. This first volume therefore contains that classic romp The Porter and the Three Ladies of Baghdad, the famous Hunchback’s Tale, the marvellous Voyages of Sindbad the Sailor, and that great favourite Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves. In the second volume it is planned to include all the stories made famous by Galland — in particular Aladdin and his Lamp — which came in the seven Supplemental volumes in the original translation.

Throughout, the original unexpurgated version privately printed by the Burton Club has been used. This translation is marked by the extraordinary resource and felicity of expression that Burton commanded and for the last hundred years has remained the benchmark against which all other translations are measured. The anthropological notes embrace a wide field of erotic reference and abound in valuable observations based on Burton’s lifelong study and observation of the peoples of the East.

This commemorative centenary issue is illustrated with a selection of the paintings of Albert Letchford commissioned by the publisher H. S. Nichols for the first library edition. Letchford was a close friend of Sir Richard and Lady Burton, and one to whom, on the night of his death, Sir Richard presented his personal copy of The Thousand Nights and a Night. It seems therefore only fitting that these illustrations should illuminate the pages of a work which has done so much to bring to life ‘the splendour and squalor, the beauty and baseness, the glamour and grotesqueness’ of Oriental life.”
