The Handyman In The Home: In 3 Volumes by Edited by Arthur W. Judge (£40.00)Publisher: Caxton Publishing Company — 1956Binding: Hardback Condition: Very Good. Pages lightly age-tanned otherwise a pleasant set.Description: September Reprint of the 2nd Edition. [First: 1930] Illustrated with black and white photographs & diagrams. From the preface: “As its title indicates, this work has been prepared expressly for the practical handyman desirous of undertaking a wide variety of jobs connected with the home, garden, garage and small workshop, including not only the domestic repairs and renovations that become necessary from time to time but also useful improvements and additions to the home and its contents. The keen home dweller, with a knowledge of the use of the simple tools and materials described in these volumes, can not only tackle most household repairs and additions expeditiously, but also avoid a good deal of expense. Apart from these considerations, there is always the satisfaction associated with the completion of a job that would otherwise have meant calling in someone else for the purpose. In addition to the extensive range of household repairs, fittings, furniture and other relevant items dealt with in this work, there are also a number of sections, including those on homecrafts, hobbies, sports accessories, outdoor constructions, etc., which will be found both useful and profitable to the handyman and housewife. Since many of the articles in these volumes deal with woodwork repairs and new constructions, it was considered desirable to include a comprehensive section, written by a well-known expert in such matters, on the subject of carpentry and woodworking tools, so that the reader who is not very well acquainted with the use of the latter can improve both his knowledge and experience.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 7". SPQR by Paul Hyde Bonner (£28.00)Publisher: Derek Verschoyle — 1953Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good+ — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with rubbing at the spine ends and corners. Knocked at the bottom corner of the lower board. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Tanning to the blanks. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned.Description: From the cover: “It was the brand of ancient Rome and it stood for Senatus Popiihisqiie Romanus. The letters proclaimed that whatever was thus labelled was Rome’s property; today they still appear on objects owned by the city. And today Rome still puts this mark on its captives, as Lovat Fraser, First Secretary of the American Embassy, discovers.

He has been warned about the Roman virus. “Never get deeply involved in a Roman love affair or really entangled in the life of a Roman”, said a wise colleague; “for once you do that, you will cease to serve your country and will serve only them”. As the story opens, wise counsel has prevailed for a long time. But Fraser is young, healthy and unmarried. Suddenly his control breaks completely. Within a few days the startled diplomat finds himself involved with not one but two Roman women (one is American-born, it is true, but she has become Roman to the core). Dazzled by the brilliance of Roman society, the splendour of the palaces, and, above all, by the charms of the beautiful Duchess of Lanza, Fraser throws caution to the winds. In the weeks that follow he is swept along by an intricate chain of events which includes the unmasking of a Communist agent and a murder. For a while he believes that his career is in jeopardy; but the spell breaks just in time, and this witty and sophisticated novel ends on a cheerful note.

Paul Hyde Bonner writes of Rome and its surrounding Campagna with great descriptive skill, and his readers will find long before they reach the end that they too have fallen under the spell of the Eternal City.”

William Morris by Himself: Designs and Writings by Edited by Gillian Naylor (£21.00)Publisher: Boston, New York, London: Little, Brown & Company — 2000Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0316855073]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper. Price Clipped. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: First in this edition. [First: MacDonald & Co, 1988] Illustrated by way of: Colour Plates;

From the cover: “Through his own work and in his own words, the book traces the fascinating progress of William Morris, pre-Raphaelite poet and architectural student into designer, writer and pioneer socialist. His youthful enthusiasm for the Middle Ages and Gothic architecture fired him with the conviction that he must dedicate his life to Art .

Later letters written to friends explain how in the industrialised nineteenth century Morris become preoccupied with the loss of traditional skills and pride in work and during the last ten years of his life he became increasingly involved in political agitation, and his stories, poems and lectures all reflect his commitment to the socialist cause and his ideals for art and society.

Other extracts from his letters and poems reveal more intimate aspects of Morris’s life and personality, reflecting the despair and isolation he felt over the breakdown of his marriage and his reliance on the friends who helped him through his personal crisis. William Morris by Himself is a tribute to an exceptional man, whose work and reputation have survived for more than a century.”

Finest Hour by Phil Craig; Tim Clayton; (£19.00)Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton — 1999Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Signed by the Author.[ISBN: 0340750413]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and the top corners of the boards with commensurate wear to the dust wrapper.Description: Signed by both authors on the title page - unverified and reflected as such in the lack of premium but the book carries promotional sticker to the upper panel. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Maps [1];

From the cover: “Sixty years ago, Europe lay at Hitler’s feet. Britain faced its darkest hour — outnumbered and friendless as the German army continued its advance. Defeat or capitulation seemed inevitable. But instead a legend was bom.

Taking its readers on a breath-taking journey from open lifeboats in Atlantic gales to the cockpits of burning fighter-planes, and through cities devastated by the Blitz, Finest Hour recreates the terror, the tragedy and the triumph of the Battle of Britain.

This powerful account of the events of 1940, is told through the voices, diaries, letters and memoirs of the men and women who lived, loved, fought and died during this terrible yet inspiring year. These searing personal testimonies, taken from over a hundred original interviews, are combined with a fresh and often controversial account of the elaborate political intrigues and betrayals of the period — the Royal Navy assault on the French fleet and America’s secret plans to cope with Britain’s defeat.

Finest Hour blends original historical research with the experiences of ordinary people in desperate times. Cutting through the nostalgic haze, this book enables readers to experience something of a time — still within common living memory — when a nation’s darkest hour became its finest.”

Prokofiev: From Russia to the West 1891-1935 by David Nice (£19.00)Publisher: Yale University Press — 2003Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0300099142]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges. Small personal monogram stamp to the first blank otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: Jacket illustration: Prokofiev in the early 1920s by Natalya Goncharova. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Musical scores;

From the cover: “Since 1991 — the year that marked both the fall of the Soviet Union and the centenary of Sergey Prokofiev’s birth — a new assessment of the life and work of this remarkable and often elusive composer has become both possible and necessary. For this definitive study David Nice has drawn on an unprecedented range of new archival material, manuscripts of works previously unexamined and interviews.

The book follows Prokofiev’s personal and musical journey from his childhood on a Ukrainian country estate to the years he spent travelling in America and Europe as an acclaimed interpreter of his own works, Nice sheds new light on the striking compositions of Prokofiev’s early years, his training at the St. Petersburg Conservatory and the circumstances of his departure from Russia in 1918 for what the composer thought would be a short tour of America. Through letters and documents, a thorough picture is also presented of his marriage and family relationships.

Nice re-evaluates the music of Prokofiev’s years in the west and traces his unique approach to new melodic thinking from the early works through the more complicated music of the early 1930s and on to the fresh simplicity of his early Soviet scores. He also examines the complex reasons that led Prokofiev to move his family to the Soviet Union in 1936. A second volume, The Soviet Years, will cover Prokofiev’s life from this period until his death in 1953.”

From the cover: “Vivien Leigh won international acclaim at the age of twenty-six when she crossed the Atlantic and walked off with the coveted part of Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind under the noses of some of Hollywood’s most famous stars. For this part alone she has earned a lasting place in film history. She was hardly ever in a bad film or a bad play and she tried a wide range of parts — scoring notable triumphs in A Streetcar Named Desire, as a convincing Lady Macbeth and as Sabina in The Skin of Our Teeth.

There have been many biographies of Vivien Leigh, invariably Hollywood filmographies, most of which have been inaccurate and incomplete. Hugo Vickers approaches his subject as a human being, according her the same detailed research that the readers of his Cecil Beaton and Gladys, Duchess of Marlborough have come to expect of him. He examines the previously uncharted story of Vivien Leigh’s antecedents, making surprising new discoveries. He is able to bring Vivien’s parents to life as real people with the help of a great number of family documents, letters and diaries, made available by Vivien’s daughter for the first time. These give the first clear account of the atmosphere in which Vivien was raised.

He traces the progress of her relationship with Leigh Holman, from their first meeting, through the period of their engagement, marriage and divorce, and shows how they formed an important, lasting friendship, helped by the complete series of letters Vivien wrote to him between 1932 and 1967. He has made extensive use of the Oswald Frewen diaries, an essential source not only on that marriage but on Vivien’s elopement with Laurence Olivier and their subsequent adventures.

Hugo Vickers also examines Vivien’s film and stage career, writing of her as a person and not as the “property” of a film company or a name on a contract. He examines her films and, drawing on a great number of interviews with famous figures of the stage, he recreates her part in the life of English Theatre in the 1940s and 1950s. An important feature of the book is, of course, her love for Laurence Olivier and their twenty-year marriage, so much of it made difficult by recurring bouts of tuberculosis and manic depression. Hugo Vickers, drawing on many hours of conversation with her devoted friend, the actor John Merivale, explains how Vivien re-established her life after the divorce.

Vivien Leigh emerges as a more real and more intelligent person than in previous accounts, a spirited and courageous actress brought down by ill-health.”

The Confessions of Jean Jacques Rousseau by Translated from the French by W. Conyngham Mallory (£18.50)Publisher: Tudor Publishing — 1935Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Good — in Poor Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper heavily soiled and edgeworn, loss at head and tail, rubbed at the tips. Boards dull and soiled. Previous owners inscription to the first blank. Text more than acceptable.Description: Complete and unabridged edition. From the cover: “Widely regarded as the first modern autobiography, ‘The Confessions’ is an astonishing work of acute psychological insight. Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-78) argued passionately against the inequality he believed to be intrinsic to civilized society. In his ‘Confessions’ he relives the first fifty-three years of his radical life with vivid immediacy — from his earliest years, where we can see the source of his belief in the innocence of childhood, through the development of his philosophical and political ideas, his struggle against the French authorities and exile from France following the publication of ‘Emile’. Depicting a life of adventure, persecution, paranoia, and brilliant achievement, ‘The Confessions’ is a landmark work by one of the greatest thinkers of the Enlightenment, which was a direct influence upon the work of Proust, Goethe and Tolstoy among others.”Notes: Size: 9¼" x 6½". 1034 pages. Who's Who of Cricketers: A Complete Who's Who of All Cricketers Who Have Played First-class Cricket in England with Full Career Records by Philip Bailey, Philip Thorn & Peter Wynne-Thomas (£18.50)Publisher: London: Guild Publishing — 1984Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with a tear to the head of the spine, a small mark to the lower middle. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: From the cover: “Every cricketer who has played in a first-class match in the British Isles, including the members of touring sides, is included in this book. Biographies and complete career figures are given for about 12,000 cricketers.

Only since 1976, when the Association of Cricket Statisticians produced a generally accepted list of first-class matches, has the book been possible, and since then the three authors, all leading Association members, have been engaged on the task.

Research has included the study of books, annuals, periodicals, newspapers (both British and overseas), birth and death registrations, church records, telephone directories and County scorebooks. The number of visits, letters and telephone calls made to archivists, cricket clubs, cricketers and cricketers’ relatives runs into several thousand.

The result is that the authors have collected a mass of information never before published, and at the same time have been able to correct errors which have occurred in other reference books.

The Who’s Who of Cricketers will remain a standard work and the essential authority on the lives and records of all first-class cricketers to play in the British Isles.”

Guide Catalogue Of The Neolithic And Bronze Age Collections In Devizes Museum by F. K. Annable & D. D. A. Simpson (£18.00)Publisher: Wiltshire Archaeological & Natural History Society — 1964Binding: Hardback First Edition. Condition: Very Good. Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs & drawings. From the preface: “The present volume, the fourth in the series of printed catalogues published by the Wiltshire Archaeological and Natural History Society, is intended to replace the prehistoric sections of the former publications (Devizes Museum Catalogues, Part I (1896) and Part II (1911 and 1934)), now out of print, and largely out of date.

Although the essential purpose of this volume is to present a virtually exhaustive corpus of the later prehistoric antiquities preserved in the Society’s museum at Devizes, the inclusion of an introductory chapter describing the Colt Hoare-Cunnington partnership, and summary accounts of the Neolithic and Bronze Ages in southern Britain, are aimed additionally at providing interest for the general reader, in the hope that the catalogue may thereby attract a wider public.

In the lengthy period intervening between the original discovery of the objects illustrated herein, and their final acquisition and transference from Stourhead House to Devizes Museum, there have been, unhappily, many losses, as well as discrepancies which have arisen relating to the precise attribution of some of the finds. In compiling this fourth edition every effort has, therefore, been made to base the descriptions on a close study of the original sources, in particular, the manuscript letters of William Cunnington (1754-1810) to Sir Richard Colt Hoare (1758-1838), and The Ancient History of North and South Wiltshire, Vols. I and II, by Colt Hoare, the classic account of their joint researches which is itself written very largely from the excavation ‘reports’ contained in the Cunnington letters.

The compilers of the present catalogue wish to express their lively appreciation of the encouragement and advice they have received throughout its compilation from Professor Stuart Piggott, F. S. A. , F. B. A. , and Professor R. J. C. Atkinson, M. A. , F. S. A. Dr. Isobel Smith, F. S. A. , has also given valuable assistance on a number of problems during the manuscript stages. Gratitude is also expressed to Mr. R. E. Sandell, M. A. , F. S. A. , Hon. Librarian to the Society, for consistent help, and to Mrs. G. P. Mitchell, B. A. , Assistant Curator, for her co-operation during the final stages of the work.

The detail photographs at the end of the book were taken by the Department of Photography, Bath Academy of Art. The Committee of the Society is grateful for their enthusiastic collaboration..”

My Betters by G. W. [George Walter] Bishop (£18.00)Publisher: Heinemann — 1957Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good — in Poor Dust Wrapper. Price Clipped. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “George Bishop, so long known in the worlds of the theatre and of letters that he may be regarded as a doyen of Fleet Street, has always been interested in others more than in himself. My Betters is therefore a happy, if modest, title for his autobiographical story of the people he has met.

His long span as commentator and critic gives him unequalled experience and authority — as an amateur he acted with Edith Evans before she went on the professional stage; he edited The Era, the “actors’ bible”; was a special correspondent on both The Observer and The Sunday Times, and for the past twenty-five years has been on the staff of The Daily Telegraph, for twenty of those years its Literary Editor.

His memories are as wide and as varied as the world of entertainment itself. They range from a visit to Sibelius in Finland to a shopping expedition in the Strand with all four Marx Brothers, from a tea party with King George V and Queen Mary to a long talk with Charles Chaplin.

George Bishop is the unknown character named Deacon in George Moore’s Conversations in Ebury Street. According to Mr. Moore he was too young to be a Bishop and so he demoted him to the rank of Deacon: as such he takes his place in that brilliant war of words. My Betters contains some remembered conversations in that room in Ebury Street, including one which George Bishop had with the great men a few days before his death.

G.B.S., the Meynells, James Agate, Marie Tempest — these are but a few of the great personalities so intimately drawn and affectionately presented by this shrewd and kindly man in the charming revue he calls My Betters.”

The Truth in the Light: An Investigation of Over 300 Near Death Experiences by Peter Fenwick & Elizabeth Fenwick (£18.00)Publisher: Headline — 1995Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0747211868]Condition: Good+ — in Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper with a stain to the top edge of the reverse of the upper panel. Edges of the textblock heavily tanned, pages a little less so. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black and White Photographs;

From the cover: “Near-death experiences fascinate because they seem to provide a glimpse of what lies beyond life. They are of interest to scientists because they seem so often to follow a pattern, which implies that they are part of a shared human experience, underpinned by brain processes common to everyone. But are they merely the product of a dying brain? Do they teach us anything about the after-life? Or at the very least do they show us anything about what death and dying will probably be like?

Dr Peter Fenwick, a neuropsychiatrist who is Britain’s leading clinical authority on the near-death experience and President of The International Association for Near-Death Studies in the UK, has received hundreds of letters from people of all ages and in all walks of life. But virtually all of them have two things in common — a certainty that what they experienced was real and a total freedom from that most basic of human fears, the fear of death.

In this compelling book which contains many first-hand accounts, Dr Fenwick analyses over 300 near-death experiences to see how far science can provide an answer to the puzzle they present, and what we can learn from them when science can take us no further.”

The Thirty-nine Articles: A Plea For a New Statement of the Christian Faith As Understood by the Church of England: An Expanded Version of a Lecture Given At Sion College, London by W. R. [Walter Robert] Matthews (£17.00)Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton — 1961Binding: Paperback Condition: Very Good. Wrappers a little tanned. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned. Description: First in this, paperback, edition.

From the cover: “Recently I have ventured to express in public my strong conviction that one of the most urgent needs of the Church of England is a reconsideration and, if possible, a revision of the Thirty-Nine Articles — or, what would probably in the end be easier and more useful, the substitution for them of a new statement of the Christian faith as understood by our Church. I have been surprised by two consequences of my utterances, first by the number of letters I have received supporting my contention; and secondly by the abrupt termination of what promised to be a lively correspondence in The Times and other journals. I deduce from these phenomena two conclusions, first that the issue raised is a very live one in the minds of a large number of clergy and laity, and secondly that some members of the establishment (in the widest sense of the word) shrink from the danger of meddling with this time-honoured Anglican document and think it prudent to let sleeping Articles lie. I welcome this opportunity of explaining and defending my position to an audience in this home of Anglican theological learning.”

The Ordeal of Power: A Political Memoir of the Eisenhower Years by Emmet John Hughes (£15.50)Publisher: MacMillan & Co. — 1963Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with a little light soiling to both panels. Price Clipped. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: First British Edition. [First Published: U.S.A., Same Year] From the cover: “This thoughtful and penetrating study of what constitutes the executive role in the American hierarchy of political power is approached through an analysis of the Eisenhower years. Emmet John Hughes was close to Eisenhower, first as a speechwriter for his initial political campaign, then in the same capacity throughout the first term of office, and finally as special consultant in what the author sees as the tragic second term. This book has been written with access to primary source material, cabinet records, texts of letters and speeches, and memoranda throughout the years.

The picture of Eisenhower is built up by an analysis of the varied men who surrounded him and his relationship to them, and by a reconstruction of the episodes and crises at home and abroad that beset him during his terms of office. Much light is thrown upon the principal actors — Nixon, McCarthy, Adams, Humphrey and especially Dulles — in the drama of Suez, Little Rock, The Geneva Conferences, the Sputnik and the U-2 incident. Eisenhower himself emerges at one and the same time as both a greater man and a lesser executive leader than either his supporters or his opponents supposed.

Emmet John Hughes has written a fascinating political document which reveals the ordeal imposed on any man who is elected to the Presidency of the United Slates.”

Can Any Mother Help Me? by Jenna Bailey (£14.50)Publisher: Faber & Faber — 2007Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0571233139]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “In 1935, a young woman wrote a letter to the women’s magazine Nursery World:

‘Can any mother help me? I live a very lonely life as I have no near neighbours. I cannot afford to buy a wireless. I adore reading, but with no library am very limited with books … I know it is bad to brood and breed hard thoughts and resentment. Can any reader suggest an occupation that will intrigue me and exclude “thinking” and cost nothing!’

Women from all over the country wrote back expressing similar frustrations. They were full of ideas and opinions but had nowhere to express them. So they decided to start a private magazine.

The Cooperative Correspondence Club -or CCC as it quickly became known — was a place for these women to describe the subjects close to their heart: the pain and elation of childbirth, the difficulties during wartime, or the struggles and comedies of daily routine. None of the women anticipated the way that the magazine would come to play such an important part in their lives.

In Can Any Mother Help Me?Jenna Bailey presents the extraordinary group of wives and mothers whose lives connected through a magazine. Her book is an intimate and moving collection of personal stories and, above all, a portrait of inseparable friendships.”

Marcel Proust: Selected Letters Volume 4 1918-1921 by Philip Kolb (£14.50)Publisher: London: HarperCollinsPublishers — 2000Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0002570327]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently faded at the spine of the dust wrapper. Edges of the text block tanned. Pages lightly age-tanned. Description: From the cover: “This final volume of the selected letters of Marcel Proust brings to an end an unbroken correspondence lasting forty-two years, and among the most brilliantly analytical commentaries on any period in world literature. It opens a few months before the last campaigns of the First World War and ends with Proust’s premature death, at the age of fifty-two, in November 1922.

In his last years, ill and aware that death was fast approaching, Proust seldom left his apartment, working desperately to revise and complete his great novel, In Search of Lost Time, and to oversee the tortuous publication of its first volumes. Yet, although his illness and absolute dedication to his work meant that his range of human contacts — previously so broad — became increasingly constricted, Proust remained a prolific and brilliant correspondent until the very end. Through his letters he reached out to his wide circle of friends and acquaintances, to critics and fellow writers, and those letters vividly demonstrate that his great humanity, wit and linguistic virtuosity remained undimmed by his isolation and failing health. They provide an unrivalled picture of post-war French society by an enlightened and often prophetic observer, and reveal, among other things, why Proust was such a great comic writer.

As Joanna Kilmartin observes in her introduction to this volume, ‘Proust is as good company in his letters as he was in life: droll, mischievous, mercurial, his self-deprecation and ceremonious manners masking a formidable erudition’. These frank, often tormented letters, never intended for publication, lay bare and explore the complexity of Proust’s own character and, above all, those of his great fictional creations. The publication of his selected letters in English completes the remarkable self-portrait provided by In Search of Lost Time.”

Television and Radio: Everybody's Soapbox by Bruce Parker; Nigel Farrell; (£14.50)Publisher: Blandford Press — 1983Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0713713062]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Top edges of the dust wrapper slightly ruffled. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Illustrated with cartoons. From the cover: “The chance to appear on a radio or television programme is the opportunity of a lifetime to speak to a mass audience. Yet how many people appreciate the value of such an offer, or really know how to make the most of it? With the expansion of broadcasting in the 1980s there will be more air time available to members of the public in scores of programmes, particularly those put out by regional and local television and radio stations. Nearly everyone has something to gain by a chance to appear on the air: the father searching for his teenage daughter, the secretary of the local drama group which is putting on an unusual play, the harassed mother seeking action about the damp walls of her council house, or the managing director who wants a little publicity for his firm’s award-winning product. Everybody’s Soapbox explains in an entertaining way not only how to use your time on the air effectively but how to go about obtaining it in the first place. The authors take a detailed and often humorous look into what happens behind the scenes of broadcasting. Some of the pitfalls are described, including the ones to avoid when being interviewed. Don Osmond’s cartoons complement the light-hearted but informative text. Much advice is provided, particularly for those who find themselves on the air for the first time. Radio and television techniques are revealed and the jargon is made clear. There is guidance on how to handle an interview and how best to present yourself. You can also find out the right way to deal with the film crew which may arrive at your house.”Notes: Illustrated by Don Osmond. Size: 8¾" x 5¾". The Iron Masters of Penns by John Horsfall (£14.00)Publisher: The Roundwood Press — 1971Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0900093293]Condition: Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. From the flap: “The Websters of Penns began their enterprise in the time of Marlborough and the business has proved as durable as the steel for which they were famous. Set in the background of the national history the story accelerates down the years — threaded with family problems, humour and drama often lie together, and in later years suspense is rarely absent. The tale is a true one without the cheap device of omitting the unpalatable and it depicts most of the range of human performance from inspiration and genius to utter imbecility. At the end one is left amazed that the firm still stands, but Webster and Horsfall, as it is now known, still remains — battered perhaps, but still on solid rock after two and a half centuries.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". Louis XIV: The Other Side of the Sun by Prince Michael of Greece (£13.50)Publisher: Orbis Publishing — 1983Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0856135143]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Penning to the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight otherwise.Description: From the cover: “Louis XIV, whose great prestige earned him the title of ‘the Sun King’, is the most famous of all the French kings. He ruled France in one of its most glorious periods, and remains to this day the supreme symbol of absolute monarchy. Now, in a brilliant new biography, Prince Michael of Greece has revealed a darker side to the Sun King. Drawing on detailed evidence from contemporary records, letters and memoirs, he explored the possibility that, underneath it all, this epitome of kingship was a shy, weak, unstable man of unexpected and intriguing complexity. Prince Michael assesses the continued and enduring influence of Cardinal Mazarin and Louis’ mother, Anne of Austria, on the little boy who came to the throne at the age of five but who learnt early on to hide his profound insecurity behind the ever more elaborate trappings of monarchy.

Here, then, is a vivid portrait of a not particularly intelligent king, secretly poring over textbooks, preferring to command sieges rather than battles because they were more convenient, whose voracious sexual appetite right into his seventies flouted the very conventions he himself tried to impose on a reluctant court at Versailles. Without simply debunking Louis, Prince Michael of Greece succeeds in presenting an iconoclastic biography which shatters many of the accepted myths about the man and his century. The result is a glimpse of the human frailties and inadequacies that lay behind the arrogance, protocol and pageantry of France’s greatest king.”
