The Handyman In The Home: In 3 Volumes by Edited by Arthur W. Judge (£40.00)Publisher: Caxton Publishing Company — 1956Binding: Hardback Condition: Very Good. Pages lightly age-tanned otherwise a pleasant set.Description: September Reprint of the 2nd Edition. [First: 1930] Illustrated with black and white photographs & diagrams. From the preface: “As its title indicates, this work has been prepared expressly for the practical handyman desirous of undertaking a wide variety of jobs connected with the home, garden, garage and small workshop, including not only the domestic repairs and renovations that become necessary from time to time but also useful improvements and additions to the home and its contents. The keen home dweller, with a knowledge of the use of the simple tools and materials described in these volumes, can not only tackle most household repairs and additions expeditiously, but also avoid a good deal of expense. Apart from these considerations, there is always the satisfaction associated with the completion of a job that would otherwise have meant calling in someone else for the purpose. In addition to the extensive range of household repairs, fittings, furniture and other relevant items dealt with in this work, there are also a number of sections, including those on homecrafts, hobbies, sports accessories, outdoor constructions, etc., which will be found both useful and profitable to the handyman and housewife. Since many of the articles in these volumes deal with woodwork repairs and new constructions, it was considered desirable to include a comprehensive section, written by a well-known expert in such matters, on the subject of carpentry and woodworking tools, so that the reader who is not very well acquainted with the use of the latter can improve both his knowledge and experience.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 7". Country Crafts Today by J. E. Manners (£12.50)Publisher: Country & Gardeners Book Society — 1974Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: From the cover: “Country Crafts Today is a comprehensive guide to the arts and trades which flourished in past times. It is also an important record, in words and pictures, of present-day craftsmen, their tools and skills. Mr Manners has produced a vivid portrait of village life and the occupations which were an integral part of the daily round. He covers those crafts which are fast dying-out, such as coopering, hedge laying, basketry and hand-made footwear, and includes those, like thatching, farriery and saddlery, which seem assured of a secure future. He sees a glimmer of hope for today’s craftsmen in that many people, tired of mass-produced goods, are demanding hand-made articles, from local pottery to wrought-iron work. Oak-bark tanning, cricket-bat making, charcoal burning, falconry, furniture and flint knapping, even dewponds, are described in this welcome addition to any country lover’s library. Country Crafts Today is a fascinating study, attractive to the eye, to be dipped irito time and again as a basic work of reference.”Notes: Jacket designed by John Manners. Size: 8½" x 6". English Market Towns by Russell Chamberlin (£12.50)Publisher: Artus — 1995Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges otherwise a very well presented copy.Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs; Illustrated endpapers and blanks; Maps;

From the cover: “Throughout history, markets have been vital centres of commerce and meeting places for the exchange of news. Today, sleepy towns are still transformed each week by the bustle of the market, their streets suddenly noisy with the calls of tradesmen and colourful with the wares and awnings of the stalls that fill them.

Dividing the country into six regions, the author vividly evokes the unique atmosphere of English market towns, their distinctive architectural styles and the wealth of local tradition and history that they offer. An introduction traces the development and significance of the market, followed by a survey of fifty towns to be visited throughout the country. Most market places are historical conglomerations: the visitor might shop for twentieth-century goods in a seventeenth-century market hall in an eleventh-century market place. The author describes the character of each market and discusses the individual features of the town. For example, Shepton Mallet, set in the undulating landscape of Somerset, boasts a market cross which has been the commercial core and social centre of the town for five centuries — at one time even wives were put up for sale here. Ledbury, its sixteenth-century black and white houses set in lush green water meadows, is distinguished by its herring-bone patterned market house. Barnard Castle’s octagonal market hall, complete with elegant lantern and Doric pillars, was the target of rival marksmen in the nineteenth century, their bullet holes still discernible in the weather vane.

In addition, the author suggests places to visit of particular interest such as museums, houses, churches and historic inns, and also recounts local stories and customs.

A regional map locates each town at a glance and a gazetteer lists additional market towns to be visited..”
