Law and Sexuality: The Global Arena by Edited by Carl Stychin & Didi Herman (£28.00)Publisher: University of Minnesota Press — 2001Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0816638705]Condition: Very Good. Description: First in this, paperback, edition. First published by The Athlone Press in 2000 as Sexuality in the Legal Arena

From the cover: “What does your sexuality have to do with your status as subject, citizen, or spouse? In our global political economy, this question has moved out of the domestic closet and into the world of public policy, human rights, and cultural norms, and is increasingly mediated, negotiated, and legislated in the legal arena. Prominent scholars of law and sexuality on four continents cross disciplines and national boundaries to explore provocative legal and political issues raised by the cultural, social, and political organization of intimate life. Encompassing a broad spectrum of perspectives, from literary analysis and postcolonial studies to feminist, queer, and race theory, their critical, skeptical, and often pragmatic analysis maps the current state of the global intersections between law and sexuality and social change.

Contributors: Heather Brook, Richard Collier, Derek Dalton, Pierre de Vos, Jonathan Goldberg-Hiller, Patrick Hanafin, Emma Henderson, Adrian Howe, Rebecca Johnson, Thomas Kuttner, Derek McGhee, Leslie J. Moran, Wayne Morgan, Oliver Phillips, Jennifer Spruill, and Claire Young.”

Inside the Box: My Life with Test Match Special by Peter Baxter (£23.00)Publisher: Quiller Press — 2009Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1846890624]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper. A nice copy. Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “Test match special is both a sporting and broadcasting institution that has become synonymous with British summertime. Since its first live broadcast back in 1957 it has proudly lived up to its original slogan ‘Don’t miss a ball, we broadcast them all’. During much of this time the man behind the scenes was Peter Baxter and here for the first time, he recalls the best moments and characters from his privileged perspective inside the TMS commentary box. Throughout this period Peter Baxter worked alongside the legendary John Arlott, the inimitable Brian Johnston and the unforgettable Henry Blofeld and ushered in new faces, such as Jonathan Agnew, who continue to entertain, inform and charm listeners today. This book is both a celebration of three decades of cricket and a unique insight into the world of radio and broadcasting.

Nobody is better qualified to write the account of those years than Peter Baxter. Following his last day in control of the commentary box in June 2007, the announcer credited the commentators and signed off the programme by simply stating, ‘The producer — for the last thirty-four years — was Peter Baxter’. What follows is the personal, touching, and at times, laugh-out-loud funny account of the producer’s time ‘inside the box’.”

My Warriors and I: Among the Samburu of Northern Kenya by Roger Stoakley (£17.50)Publisher: Scriptmate Editions — 1998Binding: Paperback Signed by the Author.[ISBN: 0951376691]Condition: Near Fine.Description: Signed by the author on the title page — unverified and reflected as such in the lack of premium. Illustrated with photographs, in colour & black and white. From the cover: “Lturungen was crippled in childhood. A chance meeting brought Roger Stoakley into close contact with this young man and his people—one of the last warrior societies of Africa. Sharing their lifestyle he gained an insight into a remarkable way of life. His moving story of its struggle, bravery and holistic joy in a harsh landscape, is also explicit about a small boy’s circumcision ceremony, and follows new young warriors through the tough Ceremony Of The Arrows. The Samburu people occupy the parched lands of northern Kenya, still the scene of tribal warfare and subject to tight security. Fiercely independent pastoral-ists, they are scornful of Western culture, and have remained relatively unaffected by civilisation. Lturungen came to England for three months while he underwent an operation on his foot. Dressed in warrior clothes, he became a celebrity among local schoolchildren. The author is the former County Librarian of Somerset.”Notes: Size: C Format (8½" x 5¼"). 201 pages. Weatherland: Writers & Artists Under English Skies by Alexandra Harris (£14.50)Publisher: London: Thames & Hudson — 2015Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 9780500518113]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and the top corners of the boards with commensurate wear to the dust wrapper. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Contains: Black & white photographs; Colour photographs; Colour plates; Black & white plates; Colour frontispiece;

From the cover: “The story of English culture over a thousand years can be told as the story of changing ideas about the weather. Writers and artists across the centuries, looking up at the same skies and walking in the same brisk air, have felt very different things.

In a sweeping panorama, Weatherland allows us to witness cultural climates on the move. The Anglo-Saxons before the Norman Conquest lived in a wintry world, writing about the coldness of exile or the shelters they must defend against enemies outdoors. The Middle Ages brought the warmth of spring; the new lyrics were sung in praise of blossom and cuckoos. It is hard to find a description of a rainy night before 1700, but by the end of the eighteenth century the Romantics will take a squall as fit subject for their most probing thoughts. There have been times when the numbers on a rain gauge count for more than a pantheon of aerial gods. There have been times for meteoric marvels and times for gentle breeze.

The weather is vast and yet we experience it intimately, which is why Alexandra Harris builds her remarkable story from small evocative details. There is the drawing of a twelfth-century man in February, warming bare toes by the fire. There is the tiny glass left behind from the Frost Fair of 1684, and the ‘sunspan’ house in Angmering that embodies the bright ambitions of the 1930s. Harris catches the distinct voices of compelling individuals. ‘Bloody cold’, says Jonathan Swift in the ‘slobbery’ January of 1713. Percy Shelley wants to become a cloud and John Ruskin wants to bottle one.

Weatherland is a celebration of English air and a life-story of those who have lived in it. As we enter what may be the last decades of English weather as we know it, this is a history for our times.”

The Body In Question by Jonathan Miller (£14.00)Publisher: Book Club Associates — 1980Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper. Leans a little. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs; Black & White Drawings; Diagrams;

From the cover: “Jonathan Miller, co-author and a star of the world-famous revue Beyond the Fringe, director of films, plays and, most recently, of operas, qualified as a medical doctor in 1959 and has held a research fellowship in the history of medicine at University College, London. In his remarkable new book, as in the 13-part B. B. C. television series with which it is linked, Dr Miller considers the functioning of the body as a subject of private experience. He explores our attitudes towards the body, our astonishing ignorance about certain parts of it and inability to read its signals.

We are mystified to experience pain in internal organs like the heart or the liver when neither the quality nor the location of the sensation gives a coherent indication of what is going wrong. And to complicate matters we feel the pain in some spot other than the seat of the mischief. But pain, he says, is not the only thing that prompts a person to go through the elaborate social process of ‘falling ill’. It might be finding something — not intrinsically painful, but alarming — like a lump in the breast, or embarrassing, like a drooping eyelid, or inhibiting to efficiency like a tremor which prompts the decision. At some point the discomfort, alarm, embarrassment or inconvenience begins to obstruct the flow of ordinary life and ‘falling ill’ is the choice we make as a result of feeling unacceptably odd.

Dr Miller considers the varieties of pathological experience and the physical foundations of disease, the types of individuals man has historically attributed with the power of healing and the assumptions of modern medical diagnosis by which a doctor may translate a patient’s account of his ‘dis-ease’ into the scientific principles of disease. His explanations are so lucid, so wide-ranging and so whole-heartedly entertaining it is often hard to believe one is reading about the facts of one’s own body and what can go wrong with it. His use of metaphor and suggestive models, particularly when tracing the historical development of certain leading ideas in human physiology, is highly stimulating. Above all, there is the keen originality and sheer enthusiasm of Dr Miller’s approach to his subject which makes The Body in Question such an outstanding book.”

Russia: A Journey to the Heart of a Land and Its People by Jonathan Dimbleby (£13.50)Publisher: London: BBC Books — 2008Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 9780563539124]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Light crease to the dust wrapper at the foot of the spine. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs; Maps; Maps to the endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “Winston Churchill famously described Russia as ‘a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma’. Even today it remains a country little understood by the West. But as a resurgent world power, with an energy-rich economy, we ignore Russia at our peril.

In this timely and revealing portrait, distinguished author and broadcaster Jonathan Dimbleby crosses eight time zones and covers 10,000 miles, from Murmansk in the Arctic Circle to the Asian city of Vladivostok, in an attempt to get beneath the skin of modern Russia. Travelling by road, rail and boat, his epic journey takes him from the neo-classical splendour of St Petersburg to remote and inaccessible parts of Siberia. At the heart of this magisterial account are Jonathan’s encounters with a diverse range of ordinary Russians — from urban intellectuals and the new class of entrepreneurs, to impoverished peasants and Russia’s ethnic minorities struggling to cling to their distinctive identities.

Jonathan was the only British television journalist to interview President Gorbachev during the Cold War, and, returning to Russia for the first time since those days, he discovers a land transformed. But despite economic progress, he finds aspects of Russian society deeply troubling, and takes an unflinchingly critical look at the way Russia has been run during the Putin years.

For Jonathan, crossing the immense Russian landmass became as much an interior journey as an exterior one, and the book contains painfully honest passages as he struggles to meet the challenges of an arduous film trip against the backdrop of great turbulence in his personal life. Filled with a dazzling array of historical and literary references, Russia — A Journey to the Heart of a Land and its People is a riveting and illuminating account of modern Russia.”

Learning to Glow: A Nuclear Reader by Edited by John Bradley (£13.00)Publisher: University of Arizona Press — 2000Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0816519560]Condition: Good+. Gently rubbed at the edges of the spine and wraps.Description: First in this, paperback, edition. From the cover: “Atomic energy has been cloaked in secrecy by government, industry, and the military, but for many Americans the effects of radiation have been less than secret. Just ask the radium workers in Ottawa, Illinois, the “downwinders” of Utah, or unsuspecting veterans of the Gulf War. When told from the perspective of ordinary people, nuclear history takes on a much different tone from that of the tranquil voices of authority who always told us we had nothing to fear. In Learning to Glow, writers such as Scott Russell Sanders, Terry Tempest Williams, and Barbara Kingsolver reveal the psychic and emotional fallout of the Cold War and of subsequent developments in nuclear science. Here are stories of and by ordinary people who have suffered the consequences of the decisions made by those in power — stories that will challenge readers to re-examine their preconceptions about the way we deal with issues of nuclear arms and radioactive waste.”Notes: Size: 9" x 6". 317 pages. Lost Subs: From the Hunley to the Kursk, the Greatest Submarines Ever Lost: and Found by Spencer Dunmore (£13.00)Publisher: Toronto: Da Capo Press — 2002Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0306811405]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. First blank has a vertical crease where it's been trapped under the upper board. Text complete, clean and tight otherwise. Description: Technical consultant, J. David Perkins. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs; Colour Drawings; Diagrams; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “In the summer of 2000, the fates of two very different submarines made headlines around the world. On August 8, the Confederate sub H. L. Hunley, sunk 136 years ago during the American Civil War, was raised at Charleston, South Carolina. Four days later, the Russian nuclear submarine Kursk exploded and plunged to the floor of the Barents Sea. Between the stories of these two lost submarines lies most of the history of men and warfare under the seas.

In gripping text and powerful images, Lost Subs chronicles the evolution of the submarine — from Robert Fulton’s early experiments to the famous German U-boats of both world wars; from Imperial Japan’s I-52 to the Cold War nuclear subs Thresher and Scorpion. Thanks to revolutionary new technology, divers and deep-sea submersibles are giving scientists unprecedented access to these lost subs, and shedding new light on both their creation and their destruction.

With state-of-the-art underwater photography, this definitive illustrated history vividly brings to life an amazing underwater museum. Fascinating cutaway diagrams and a wealth of archival photographs and paintings re-create these vessels in their prime and help answer many of the questions that have surrounded their sinkings. Here is a saga as current as today’s headlines, filled with mystery, drama and daring.”

Holy Warriors: A Modern History of the Crusades by Jonathan Phillips (£12.00)Publisher: London: The Bodley Head — 2009Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 9780224079372]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn with a promotional sticker to the upper panel which is best left in place. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps;

From the cover: “Holy war: Christianity versus Islam. Brutality, greed, honour, chivalry; the clink of chain mail, the clatter of hooves, the call of the muezzin. Such are the stock ingredients of the Crusades. But to what extent do the stereotypes fit with the reality?

In his remarkable new book, Jonathan Phillips explores this conflict of ideas, beliefs and cultures and shows both the contradictions and the diversity of holy war: friendships and alliances between Christians and Muslims; triumphs of diplomacy rather than the sword; the launch of crusades against Christians, and calls for jihads against Muslims.

Phillips draws on contemporary writings — on chronicles, songs, sermons, travel diaries, letters, financial accounts and peace treaties — to throw a brilliant new light on people and events we thought we knew well: the bloody conquest of Jerusalem in the First Crusade; the titanic struggle between Richard the Lionheart and Saladin; the breathtaking naivety of the Children’s Crusade; and the ruthless suppression of the Knights Templar. Less familiar but no less central are the stories of the intimidating and astute politician, Queen Melisende of Jerusalem; the fiery preacher, Al-Sulami; the Arabic-speaking excommunicate and Holy Roman Emperor, Frederick II.

Over time the Crusades were directed against a variety of opponents: not only Muslims in the Middle East but against Cathar heretics, political enemies of the papacy, the Mongols, pagan tribes of northern Europe, and the Ottoman Turks. Although the notion of fighting for one’s faith fell into disrepute in the Enlightenment, in a final chapter Jonathan Phillips traces the crusading impulse up to the present day — to George W. Bush’s characterisation of the war on terrorism as a crusade.

Vivid, original and illuminating, Holy Warriors provides an unparalleled account of one of the great cultural, political and religious movements in world history.”

The Eternal Journey: Meditations on the Jewish Year by Jonathan Wittenberg (£12.00)Publisher: New York: Aviv Press — 2004Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Signed by the Author.[ISBN: 0916219259]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Signed, and dedicated, by the author on the title page — unverified and reflected as such in the lack of premium. From the cover: “All people seek the secret of their own continuity, writes Rabbi Jonathan Wittenberg of London. The light of where we come from shines into the uncertainty of who we are. For where we come from is always at the heart of who we are, and until we understand the greater journey of our family and people we cannot recognize the direction of our own life. In this series of lyrical essays organized around the Jewish calendar, Rabbi Wittenberg engages with moral and theological questions — the relationship between God and the Holocaust, humanity’s responsibility for its actions, the transience of life — in language that is both precise and passionate. His meditations on the wonders of the natural world and the impact of inter-generational memory invite readers to consider the religious essence of everyday life. Weaving in quotations from Isaac Babel, Osip Mandelstam, Wordsworth, Keats, and Coleridge, as well as biblical and Talmudic insights, Rabbi Wittenberg sheds a universalistic light on the particularities of Jewish tradition. Taken as a whole, this series of provocative essays touches on themes that are not only reflective of the Jewish community’s eternal journey, but on the eternal journey shared by all of humanity.”Notes: Size: 9¼" x 6¼". Human Nature: Fact and Fiction by Edited by Robin Headlam Wells & Johnjoe McFadden (£11.50)Publisher: Continuum — 2006Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0826485464]Condition: Near Fine.Description: First in this, paperback, edition. From the cover: “What do we mean by ‘human nature’? Is there a genetically determined core of humanity that unites us all as members of a single species? Or is the thing we call human nature a social construct? And how do we explain the mystery of human creativity? Do great writers have an intuitive grasp of what makes human beings tick, or are they merely the mouthpiece of contemporary culture? It has been claimed that ‘the greatest enterprise of the mind has always been and always will be the attempted linkage of the sciences and humanities’ (Edward O. Wilson). This ground-breaking book marks the beginning of a new dialogue between the two. Rather than focusing on the division between what C.P. Snow called ‘the two cultures’, it shows that the sciences and humanities have much to learn from each other. Points of disagreement remain. Yet there is in this volume a genuine attempt to bridge the gulf that has traditionally separated the sciences and humanities and to reach a better understanding of what it means to be human. Human Nature — Fact and Fiction is a major new contribution to the debate on human nature, set to be required reading for anyone with a background in either the arts or the sciences who is interested in understanding what defines us as human beings — in what we are, and why.”Notes: Foreword or introduction by A. The Dead Sea Scrolls: Qumran in Perspective by Geza Vermes (£11.50)Publisher: Collins — 1977Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0002161427]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the edges. Gently faded at the spine. Price Clipped. Top edges of the text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: From the cover: “In a clear narrative of the sensational appearance of these scrolls and of the ensuing arguments, mistakes and delays, Dr Vermes shows how ‘the greatest manuscript find of modern times’ (W. F. Albright) is now ‘likely to become the academic scandal par excellence of the twentieth century’. But he assembles the key facts about 43 non-biblical documents (some still unpublished) from a vast scholarly literature which he lists selectively and from his own pioneering work; and then he shows what light is thrown on the second and first centuries BC and on the first century AD up to the fateful year 68 when Qumran fell to the Romans. A factual picture of the life of the sectarian monastery at Qumran as reflected in the scrolls is given by a careful assembly of these documents and fragments. Allusions to contemporary events are deciphered where possible, and comparisons between this group (almost certainly Essene) and other movements of the time are drawn; but no attempt is made by Dr Vermes to follow a number of scholars, whom he names frankly, in going beyond the evidence into uncontrolled speculation. The religious ideas of this strange community are expounded for their own sake, and their relevance to Old and New Testament, and Judaic studies is examined. In particular it is shown that our new knowledge, while still defective at many points, opens up a new approach to the origins of Christianity.”Notes: Size: 8¾" x 5¼". Gielgud: A Theatrical Life 1904-2000 by Jonathan Croall (£10.50)Publisher: Methuen & Co. — 2000Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0413745600]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and top corners with commensurate ruffling to the dust wrapper. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank. Pages lightly age-tanned.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “On his death John Gielgud was widely acclaimed as the greatest classical actor of the twentieth century, and the finest modern interpreter of Shakespeare. This biography is the first to cover in full an astonishing career, spanning nearly eighty years in films, radio, television and the theatre.

For his entertaining, critical and widely researched book Jonathan Croall has talked in detail to more than a hundred friends and colleagues who worked with Gielgud. They include actors such as Alec Guinness, John Mills, Dorothy Turin, Dirk Bogarde, Sarah Miles, Peter Ustinov, Virginia McKenna, Richard Briers, Anna Carteret and Michael Pennington; the playwrights Edward Albee, Christopher Fry, David Storey and Charles Wood; directors such as Peter Brook, William Gaskill and John Schlesinger; and the designers Tanya Moiseiwitsch, Jocelyn Herbert, and Margaret Harris of Motley.

The book captures vividly Gielgud’s childhood amongst his famous Terry relations, his early struggles as a young actor, and his triumphs in Shakespeare at the Old Vie under Lilian Baylis. It highlights his trail-blazing achievements as a director and actor-manager in the 1930s and 1940s, and looks at the influence on his work of key figures such as J.B. Pagan, Nigel Playfair, Theodore Komisarjevsky, Michel Saint-Denis and, above all, Harley Granville-Barker. It reveals how he courageously overcame a humiliating scandal to re-invent himself in the work of the new playwrights of the 1960s and 1970s, and ends with a fascinating account of his late flowering as an Oscar-winning movie star.

It also provides a revealing picture of his celebrated rivalry with Laurence Olivier, his deep friendship with Ralph Richardson, his scintillating stage partnerships with Peggy Ashcroft and Edith Evans, and his profound influence on younger actors such as Alec Guinness, Michael Redgrave and Paul Scofield.

Gielgud emerges as a man of conflicting qualities: proud and modest, sensitive and tactless, ambitious and unselfish, daring and insecure. His wit, humanity and dedication to the theatre shine through this compelling portrait of a remarkable and much-loved man.”

Performance Cars by Jonathan Wood (£10.50)Publisher: Parragon — 1999Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0752531549]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges.Description: Illustrated with colour photographs and tables. From the cover: “FASTEN YOUR seat belts and get ready for some serious action. Between these covers will be found a galaxy of the world’s fastest and most glamorous motor cars. Built for high speed, and with beautiful lines to match, performance cars are designed for maximum driver enjoyment. In this stunningly illustrated survey author Jonathan Wood takes you behind the controls of some of the world’s most famous fast cars, whether it’s the wildly impractical 200mph Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR from Germany, the zippy Mazda MX-5 from Japan, Britain’s popular MGF or America’s latest classic Chevrolet Corvette.

Performance cars come in all shapes and sizes, and in recent years a number of smaller independent manufacturers have joined the fray with a variety of individual, and sometimes downright eccentric, designs that raise a smile while still being able to hold their own at the traffic-light burn-up! Such racing car-inspired concepts as the Light Car Company’s Rocket and the Dare DZ are reminders that performance motoring is as much about fun as velocity.

Each car is fully described in an entry that incorporates a design history and a summary of its main model variants, while a fact-filled specification table lists all the vital data including top speed and the all-important acceleration times that allow readers to make comparisons between their particular favourites.

Whether you have a performance car in your garage, are an aspiring owner looking for the right model for you, or simply a motoring fan who loves to dream, you will find a feast to enjoy within these colourful pages.”

Portrait Of The Cotswolds by Edith Brill (£10.50)Publisher: Robert Hale — 1971Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0709124988]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Slightly ruffled edges of the dust wrapper, laminate lifting very slightly near spine, with a closed triangular tear at the head of the lower panel. Gently faded at the spine of the dust wrapper. Price Clipped. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: New edition. [First Edition: 1964] Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “A portrait of a region, like a portrait of a person, depends on the bony structure beneath the surface. The oolitic limestone of the Cotswolds is responsible not only for the smooth flowing undulations of the hills but for the special quality of its architecture, providing the material above ground and below it, worked and unworked, which gives the region its unique distinction. In this book the writer illustrates how human activities through the ages have produced the Cotswolds we see today. The medieval wool-men whose wealth came from sheep bred on the wolds enriched the little towns with churches such as Northleach, Fairford and Chipping Campden; the sixteenth and seventeenth-century stone masons evolved a local style of domestic building whose architectural grace still makes almost every Cotswold village a delight to the eye; the wealthy clothiers of the eighteenth-century left behind mills and many a fine Renaissance house. Though the region declined with the loss of the clothing trade to the North of England it escaped the sprawl and litter of the Industrial Revolution. It waited quiescent, to be discovered by William Morris and others seeking an unspoilt England. The first half of the twentieth-century saw the Cotswolds becoming widely known as artists, craftsmen and writers began to recognize its great natural and architectural beauty. The motor car made it easily accessible, and now it has become one of Britain’s important tourist centres. But it still retains the individuality impressed upon it through the ages by the nature of its stone and the character of its inhabitants.”Notes: Jacket designed by Kenneth Scowen (Photo.). The Materials and Techniques of Painting by Jonathan Stephenson (£10.50)Publisher: Thames & Hudson — 1989Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 050023535X]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs; Diagrams;

From the cover: “In the distant past, all artists inherited a tried and tested body of knowledge on materials and techniques while apprenticed in their masters’ workshop. Much of this lore has been lost to recent generations, however, and today’s painters — often working in isolation and with little training – lack authoritative guidance on the basics of their craft.

This practical manual restores to contemporary painters the heritage that is truly theirs by providing a single reliable source of vital information. Designed for use both as a textbook and for quick reference, it forms an invaluable guide for both the beginner and the advanced practitioner. Here are full details of pigments, media — from oils, resins and gums to glues, egg and the synthetics — and fillers; types of support (wood, cloth, paper, stone, walls); and studio equipment, from brushes and palettes to painting knives and easels. Throughout, the author demonstrates functions that are too often taken for granted, or little understood, and explains why particular raw materials are used, as well as how they are prepared.

Clear, readable descriptions, accompanied by full-colour demonstrations, offer a complete introduction to the major traditional techniques of painting — oil, tempera, water-colour, even fresco — and to more recent innovations, such as acrylics and silica painting.

With hundreds of specially prepared illustrations, this remarkable book reveals the vital link between the various media and makes the case for a systematic approach to painting in which materials are working for, and not against, the artist.

From the first essentials of laying a palette and applying paint, to hints on how to varnish, frame and preserve the finished work, The Materials and Techniques of Painting is undoubtedly the one essential and enduring work of reference for every contemporary artist.”

A History of the Amish by Steven M. Nolt (£9.50)Publisher: Good Books (Pennsylvania) — 1992Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 156148072X]Condition: Very Good. Lightly rubbed at the tips of the upper wrap and top corners of the first few pages. Text complete, clean and tight otherwise.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs, drawings and maps. From the cover: “The Amish, one of America’s most intriguing peoples, have survived for 300 years! While much has been written on the Amish recently, little has appeared about their history. This book brings together for the first time in one volume a thorough history of the Amish people. From their beginnings in Europe through their settlement in North America, the Amish have struggled to maintain their beliefs and traditions in often hostile settings. Atlantic crossings, westward migration, military conscription and compulsory school laws were just a few of the many challenges to the Amish church through the years. Caught in the currents and conflicts of national life, the Amish have remained a distinct people in America’s melting pot. Authoritative, thorough and interestingly written, A History of the Amish presents the deep and rich heritage of the Amish people. Includes a substantial bibliography for further reading and study.”Notes: Size: 8½" x 5½". 318 pages.
