The White Guard by Mikhail Bulgakov (£64.00)Publisher: London: Collins & Harvill Press — 1971Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0002619059]Condition: Good+ — in Good Dust Wrapper. Edges of the dust wrapper somewhat frayed, without loss although untidy and now tape-reinforced on the verso, with sunning to the spine. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Previous owners' gift inscription to the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight otherwise bar for small tear at the foot of the last two leaves. Description: From the cover: “The time — 1918. The place — Kiev, capital of the Ukraine, torn by revolution and civil war. The people — the Turbin family of two brothers and a sister, whose home is a calm pool of affection, warmth and humanity in a maelstrom of cold, snow, violence and sudden death. Alexei Turbin, eldest brother and head of the family, is a doctor returned from the war; his sister Elena is married to an unpleasant Baltic German who scuttles away like a rat as soon as danger threatens. The youngest is Nikolka, at seventeen just out of officer-cadet school and a volunteer in one of the scratch units manned by officers which formed the White Guard in the Ukraine. A cuckoo in their nest is their hopeless cousin from Zhitomir, Lariosik, a charming bungler who always says the wrong thing, breaks everything he touches, yet is welcomed into the Turbins’ charmed circle with love and kindness.

At the beginning, the Germans are still occupying Kiev, propping up the feeble regime of the Hetman Skoropadsky. Their cause lost in advance by the Hetman’s ignoble defection, Alexei and Nikolka Turbin and their White Guard officer friends make a brave but futile attempt to resist the capture of Kiev by the adventurer Petlyura and his army of long-moustached, baggy-trousered, trigger-happy Ukrainian roughnecks.

Savage while it lasts, Petlyura’s occupation of Kiev is at least short and as his motley troops slink away, Bulgakov coins an image of power which is the perfect antithesis to the cosy, womb-like interior of the Turbin’s home: on the track outside Kiev, hissing gently, waiting to grind inexorably into the city, stands the huge steel-clad articulated juggernaut of a Bolshevik armoured train.”

The Handyman In The Home: In 3 Volumes by Edited by Arthur W. Judge (£40.00)Publisher: Caxton Publishing Company — 1956Binding: Hardback Condition: Very Good. Pages lightly age-tanned otherwise a pleasant set.Description: September Reprint of the 2nd Edition. [First: 1930] Illustrated with black and white photographs & diagrams. From the preface: “As its title indicates, this work has been prepared expressly for the practical handyman desirous of undertaking a wide variety of jobs connected with the home, garden, garage and small workshop, including not only the domestic repairs and renovations that become necessary from time to time but also useful improvements and additions to the home and its contents. The keen home dweller, with a knowledge of the use of the simple tools and materials described in these volumes, can not only tackle most household repairs and additions expeditiously, but also avoid a good deal of expense. Apart from these considerations, there is always the satisfaction associated with the completion of a job that would otherwise have meant calling in someone else for the purpose. In addition to the extensive range of household repairs, fittings, furniture and other relevant items dealt with in this work, there are also a number of sections, including those on homecrafts, hobbies, sports accessories, outdoor constructions, etc., which will be found both useful and profitable to the handyman and housewife. Since many of the articles in these volumes deal with woodwork repairs and new constructions, it was considered desirable to include a comprehensive section, written by a well-known expert in such matters, on the subject of carpentry and woodworking tools, so that the reader who is not very well acquainted with the use of the latter can improve both his knowledge and experience.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 7". At Home: A Century of New Zealand Design by Douglas Lloyd Jenkins (£32.00)Publisher: Godwit (Aukland: New Zealand) — 2004Binding: Paperback Condition: Very Good. Small scuff to the upper wrapper at the join otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Colour Photographs; Black & White Drawings; Diagrams; Plans;

From the cover: “At Home: A Century of New Zealand Design is a personal journey by leading architecture and design writer Douglas Lloyd Jenkins, in pursuit of a distinctive New Zealand sense of style, is the story of those New Zealanders who put the creation of a contemporary living environment first, not only as an expression of individualism but as their contribution to the development of a recognisable New Zealand culture.

Taking the first decade of the twentieth century as its starting point, joins the story of the New Zealand house just at the point when its inhabitants began to ask whether a uniquely local expression might be possible. It charts the way in which imported movements, fashions and styles in twentieth-century architecture and design were adopted — or adapted — by New Zealanders to create personalised home environments, whether international in style or an attempt at something distinctively local.

In At Home: A Century of New Zealand Design, Douglas Lloyd Jenkins draws on his depth of knowledge to tell, in an accessible style, an alternative history of New Zealand, in which style and fashion have been key in building local culture. He sheds light on many lesser-known architects and designers, as well as those more widely recognised, challenging the notion of the architect as the sole creative force behind the progressive house.”

Ornamental Design 1850 Ornementale Kunst 1850 Motifs Ornementaux 1850 Design Ornementale 1850 El Diseno Ornamental 1850 by Pepin Van Roojen (£30.00)Publisher: Amsterdam: The Pepin Press — 1998Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 9054960302]Condition: Very Good. Gently rubbed at the edges of the spine and wrappers with a small sticker ghost to the upper panel. Text block has a faint ripple throughout although the plates are well preserved. A good copy. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Plates;

From the cover: “The material presented in this book was originally published in the early 1870s, and representative of styles prevalent in the preceding decades. This was a period during which ornamental design became increasingly widespread, but, ironically, not a time during which many new designs were developed. Instead, the past was raided by architects, artists and craftsmen, and shapes and patterns that at one point in history may have had revered meanings, were copied, altered, combined or split to pieces, without much consideration for their original purpose. However, the result is a wealth of beautiful design. Practically every ornamental style known to early and mid-nineteenth century Europeans, from ancient Egyptian to Baroque, is represented here. The main items illustrated are ceramics, metalware, glass objects, furniture, carpets and other textiles, either complete, or in detail. There are also some architectural elements and examples of interior decoration.

Design inspired by ancient ancient Egypt displays the presence of stylised lotus flowers, motifs reminiscent of hieroglyphs, zig-zag patterns and spiralling constructions. Many examples of Greek ornamental design were copied from friezes on which mythical events were recorded. Very popular Greek ornaments are fret, spiral and bead borders, variations on the echinus (egg and dart), the acanthus and rosettes and palmettes. A principal characteristic of Greek design is the use of columns in architecture and interiors, topped with elaborate capitals. Very simply put, Roman adornment seems to have been largely an exuberant extension of the Greek visual vocabulary, with Etruscan elements added. Some of the mosaic designs in this book were clearly based on Pompeian originals. The so-called Byzantine school is a blending of styles: Greek, Roman, and early Christian ornaments, combined with elements from Persia and Syria. Byzantine ornamentation was one of the sources of Islamic decorative style, with elaborate geometrical patterns due to the interdiction of representations of living things. Illustrative of the Moorish style are the inter-woven formations based on Arabic calligraphy. The Gothic period contributed, among others, variations on the clover leaf: trefoils, quatrefoils and cinquefoils, but also the fleur-de-lis and the Tudor rose. During the Renaissance, the classical Greco-Roman models were rejuvenated and complemented with elements from the Near Orient. Especially in architecture, classical orders were followed. In ornamental design, freer patterns became fashionable. Of course, the Renaissance motifs used during the period covered by this book, were, again, often combined with other styles.”

The Art of Flowers by Laurence Buffet-Challié (£24.50)Publisher: Weidenfeld & Nicolson — 1969Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper pleasant overall but has two short closed tears to the top edge, one at the head of the spine and the other at the head of the upper panel. Text complete, clean and tight. Box a little faded and marked but more than acceptable.Description: 41 colour plates. 87 black and white illustrations. 78 explanatory diagrams. From the cover: “The flower as a decorative object is an integral part of the home and in recent times has become an important element in the art of interior design. Here, for the first time, the national styles of Germany, England, France, Italy and Scandinavia have been compared, each influenced by the particular climate, way of life, and artistic history of their country. The book begins with the study of basic forms and techniques; later the amateur is taught how to exploit the natural beauty of flowers, how to see colours and arrange a design which will blend in with its setting. The flower arrangements are shown simply and clearly; explanatory diagrams of their construction appear next to the magnificent colour plates or black and white illustrations, most of which have been especially photographed for this book. The author, a specialist in the art of decoration, writes in collaboration with Jacques Bedat, an eminent florist, who created many of the flower arrangements reproduced, and whose creative fantasy is shown in his arrangements for the Rothschilds, the Duchess of Windsor, Renault, Citroen and many others. The Art of Flowers is dedicated to the flower-lover, whether the source of his pleasure is growing, arranging or just looking at flowers.”Notes: Illustrated by Jacques Bedat. Size: 9¾" x 10¼". From the cover: “Harewood House has been the Lascelles family home for over 200 years. Built by John Carr of York over a period of eleven years between 1759-1771, the spectacular interior is the work of the Scottish architect Robert Adam. The house contains unrivalled furniture made especially for Harewood by Thomas Chippendale, born only a few miles up the Wharfe Valley at Otley, and a famous collection of Sevres porcelain.

Harewood House is surrounded by 1,000 acres of fine parkland, gardens and woodland shaped by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, the creator of eighteenth-century English landscaping.

In the rooms hang many distinguished family portraits painted by such renowned artists as Sir Joshua Reynolds, Thomas Gainsborough, George Romney, John Hoppner and Sir Thomas Lawrence, water-colours by J. M. W. Turner and Thomas Girtin, and Renaissance masterpieces by Giovanni Bellini, Titian, Veronese, Tintoretto and El Greco. The Anatomy of Nelson's Ships by C. [Charles] Nepean Longridge (£20.50)Publisher: Hemel Hempstead: Model & Allied Publications Limited — 1974Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0853440913]Condition: Good+ — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Price Clipped. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: 6th impression. [First Edition: 1955] Illustrated by way of: Fold-out Plans [12]; Black & White Plates [50]; Black & White Drawings [183];

From the cover: “Nelson’s history has been written from every possible angle, but this is not so with his ships. Such information as there is about the ships is buried in contemporary books on Naval Architecture; only the expert can sift it and present it in a usable form. In doing this, Dr. Longridge’s work becomes a veritable treasure trove for the naval historian and ship modeller. H. M. S. Victory is the supreme example of the ships of the period, and fortunately she is still in existence. The original draughts of 1765 have been preserved, as have also the drawings used in the restoration of the ship in 1922. The author was thus able to compile from authentic sources and his model of the Victory now occupies a prominent position in the Science Museum at South Kensington.

The illustrations are a unique feature, they include a set of photographs, now made available to the general public, showing the interior construction of H. M. S. Victory and H. M. S. Implacable, the latter being taken only a few days before she was scuttled.

There are nearly 200 line drawings, designed by E. Bowness, A. R. I. N. A. , and executed by G. F. Campbell, Assoc. M. R. I. N. A. , ranging from elaborate perspective drawings of the complex gear at the fore top and crosstrees to the simplest detail. The folding plates by G. F. Campbell include lines, inboard and outboard profile, deck plans of the hull, standing and running rigging plans, and a complete belaying pin plan.

Such an analysis of the ship of this period has never before been attempted and the ship lover, the naval architect and the ship modeller of today is fortunate in having such a work.”

Young Men's Gold by Daniel Mark Epstein (£19.50)Publisher: The Overlook Press — 1978Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0879510714]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper unevenly faded on both panels, sunned at the spine. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: From the cover: “Young Men’s Gold is Epstein’s first book since winning the prestigious Prix de Rome. Here is a progression of sensuous love poems and dramatic lyrics culminating in the mythic narrative from which the book takes its title. In Young Men’s Gold a Civil War veteran tells the tragic story of his youthful wager with death, in a poetic voice that moves with Homeric swiftness and resonance.

Epstein has been critically noted for his formidable style, his ‘Browingesque interlocked harshness’, and his highly rhythmic, melodious verse. In a review of The Follies, published in 1977, The New Republic described the attraction of Epstein’s poems: ‘They are narratives, real stories, not the exploration of an interior reality that we have come to expect from many young poets’. The review went on to say that Epstein’s books are memorable. ‘They’re full of concrete detail, especially of place and appearance. The characters are apt to appear in your dreams, looking just the way Epstein describes them’.“

The Anatomy of Nelson's Ships by C. [Charles] Nepean Longridge (£18.00)Publisher: Watford: Model & Allied Publications — 1977Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0853440913]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper, some small nicks, which is tanned overall notably at the spine. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Description: Illustrated by way of: Fold-out Plans [12]; Black & White Plates [50]; Black & White Drawings [183];

There are nearly 200 line drawings, designed by E. Bowness, A. R. I. N. A. , and executed by G. F. Campbell, Assoc. M. R. I. N. Studies on the Tihamah: The Report of the Tihamah Expedition 1982 and Related Papers by Edited by Francine Stone (£15.50)Publisher: Harlow: Longman — 1985Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0582783879]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper which is darkened at the spine. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Contains: Black & white photographs; Colour plates; Black & white drawings; Maps; Plans;

From the cover: “The Tihamah is the name given to the coastal strip of south-western Arabia which borders the Red Sea. Its culture and natural history owe as much to Africa and to the Indian Ocean basin as to the interior of Arabia, and it is this amalgam which gives the region its distinctive features.

This volume offers a collection of survey reports, supplemented by related papers, which outline the geology, flora, fauna, history, archaeology, architecture, music and ethnography of the North Yemen portion of the Tihamah, as it was surveyed in 1982 by the Tihamah Expedition.

The multi-disciplinary format draws a profile of the Tihamah which is broadly descriptive and accessible to the general reader, yet sufficiently detailed to provide considerable information to specialists.

Not since the Danish Expedition to Arabia in 1762 has the Tihamah been the subject of such a wide-ranging study, and the papers published here, assembling recent research, constitute the only monograph available on the region.

This symposium is illustrated from the work of the Expedition, artists, architects and others, whose hand-wrought observations have served to document various landforms, plants, animals, monuments, archaeological remains, vernacular structures, musical instruments and artefacts of the area.

In addition, short essays by Expedition members relate the field techniques used to record the music and to survey the wildlife, as well as to carry out the programmes of the artists, who were charged with the task of recording for science while making a contribution of the tradition of Orientalist art.

The book includes specialised glossaries, two maps and index.”

Period Details: A Sourcebook for House Restoration by Judith & Martin Miller (£14.00)Publisher: Mitchell Beazley — 1988Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0855336501]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: 3rd printing. [First Published: 1987] Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “The greatest pleasure of buying a period house is the opportunity to rediscover its original character by restoring features that have been covered up, destroyed or removed over the years.

Period Details offers a unique pictorial survey of structural and decorative styles, fixtures and fittings, period by period and feature by feature throughout the house. Approximately 1,000 colour photographs, many of them commissioned specially for the book and all accompanied by informative captions, provide an invaluable guide for amateur restorers, as well as for architects, builders and decorators.

The key to successful restoration is attention to detail — door hinges and catches as well as the doors themselves, cornices and skirting boards as well as walls and ceilings. Judith and Martin Miller take an in-depth approach, supplying a wealth of detailed information on style, ornament, dating, materials and construction techniques. The emphasis is thoroughly practical, with sound commonsense advice on how to restore particular features (such as sash windows and wooden floors) and how to combine an authentic period feel with the requirements of modern living. The best reproduction features are covered, for home-owners who are unable to obtain the originals.

The book begins with an authoritative introduction which places interiors in the context of a general chronology of styles and architectural developments. Then follows the heart of the book — a feature-by-feature survey which covers doors, windows, floors, ceilings, walls, staircases, lighting, fittings for bathrooms and kitchens, and conservatories. The third major section is a Directory, listing suppliers, restorers, retailers, manufacturers, and useful sources of information. A Glossary gives succinct definitions of architectural terms.

An essential reference tool for anyone contemplating restoration, Period Details also provides illuminating background information for those of us who enjoy historic houses.”

Sicily by Peirre Sebilleau (£14.00)Publisher: Kaye & Ward — 1968Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0718201159]Condition: Very Good — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper faded at the spine and onto the margins of the panels. Top edge of the dust wrapper a little rubbed. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Plates; Maps [1]; Colour frontispiece;

From the cover: “The unique geographical situation of Sicily, Italy’s “boot", so close to North Africa and to Greece, has for nearly 4,000 years made it a valuable prize for successive invaders — Carthaginians and Greeks, Romans and Byzantines, Arabs and Normans, Germans, French, Spanish and British — and all the occupying powers have left their mark on this island so full of contrasts. Splendid palaces and miserable hovels; glorious views, Etna periodically in eruption, extensive cultivation, barren plains over which the sirocco blows; the Sicily loved by Pindar and Aeschylus and her native poet, Theocritus; of beautiful Greek theatres and Doric temples, fine cathedrals; the overpopulated Sicily of the Mafia, of massive ignorance and poverty and darkness, on to which Danilo Dolci has lately flashed his searing torch: all these different aspects make their appearance in Pierre Sebilleau’s notable addition to the Beaux Pays series.

However, although he does not deny the darker side, Sebilleau is too great a lover of the island, and of the complex, reserved Sicilian character, not to come down heavily on the side of the Earthly Paradise, with its superb climate, its beaches and gardens, its wonderful works of art and architecture. This is what comes across as he takes the reader on a brisk but thorough tour, landing at Palermo, the capital, round the west coast, down to the toe and Syracuse, into the interior, and back, by way of Catania and Etna, Messina and along the north coast for a more leisurely look at Palermo, before departing with the knowledge that “you love Sicily, the only and best conclusion to your tour you can reach”. Though keeping the freshness of personal experience, likes and dislikes, Sebilleau caters for all travellers’ tastes, carries lightly his considerable erudition, and distils his own enthusiasm for the “Paradise on earth”. Altogether it is a worthy text to complement the magnificent illustrations.”

From the cover: “Learning to get the most out of the space in which we live, whether it’s a studio apartment or one room in the house that is simply too small, is a feature of modern life. The problems imposed by a small space require ingenious solutions, but small spaces do have their advantages: you may be able to afford a higher standard of finish than you could in a larger house or apartment and, most importantly, because careful planning is of the essence, your small space should work well. Russia: A Journey to the Heart of a Land and Its People by Jonathan Dimbleby (£13.50)Publisher: London: BBC Books — 2008Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 9780563539124]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Light crease to the dust wrapper at the foot of the spine. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs; Maps; Maps to the endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “Winston Churchill famously described Russia as ‘a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma’. Even today it remains a country little understood by the West. But as a resurgent world power, with an energy-rich economy, we ignore Russia at our peril.

In this timely and revealing portrait, distinguished author and broadcaster Jonathan Dimbleby crosses eight time zones and covers 10,000 miles, from Murmansk in the Arctic Circle to the Asian city of Vladivostok, in an attempt to get beneath the skin of modern Russia. Travelling by road, rail and boat, his epic journey takes him from the neo-classical splendour of St Petersburg to remote and inaccessible parts of Siberia. At the heart of this magisterial account are Jonathan’s encounters with a diverse range of ordinary Russians — from urban intellectuals and the new class of entrepreneurs, to impoverished peasants and Russia’s ethnic minorities struggling to cling to their distinctive identities.

Jonathan was the only British television journalist to interview President Gorbachev during the Cold War, and, returning to Russia for the first time since those days, he discovers a land transformed. But despite economic progress, he finds aspects of Russian society deeply troubling, and takes an unflinchingly critical look at the way Russia has been run during the Putin years.

For Jonathan, crossing the immense Russian landmass became as much an interior journey as an exterior one, and the book contains painfully honest passages as he struggles to meet the challenges of an arduous film trip against the backdrop of great turbulence in his personal life. Filled with a dazzling array of historical and literary references, Russia — A Journey to the Heart of a Land and its People is a riveting and illuminating account of modern Russia.”

Irish Georgian by Herbert Ypma (£12.00)Publisher: New York: Stewart, Tabori & Chang — 1998Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 155670707X]Condition: Very Good. Description: First in this, paperback, edition. Contains: Colour photographs;

From the cover: “During the late eighteenth century, the landed gentry of Ireland spearheaded the founding of a considerable Irish industry, dedicated to beauty in architecture, design and decoration. In all disciplines of style, Ireland set extraordinary standards and achieved many world firsts, including the first public building in the Neo-Palladian style; marvellously decorated copper-plate-printed fabric; silver and cut crystal; and the perfection of the mezzotint technique. Less pretentious than their English counterparts, Irish Georgian houses distinguish themselves not just by their wild and wonderful settings and inspiring classicism, but also by an extraordinary quality of workmanship.

Irish Georgian explores the simplicity, symmetry and unaffected elegance of the classical revival pervading the architecture of this era, celebrating its powerful appeal and renewed interest today. From grand country manors, genteel townhouses and graceful villas to simple rural cottages, Ypma’s investigation, along with photographs by Barbara and Rene Stoeltie, examines the inspirational houses, great and small, renovated by people such as Desmond and Mariga Guinness, Timothy Hennessy, and even the Stoelties themselves.

Irish Georgian will provide architects, designers, and those with an interest in the decorative arts with an illuminating look at a magnificent cultural legacy.”

The Directions of Memory (Poems 1958-1963) by Laurence Lerner (£11.50)Publisher: Chatto & Windus — 1963Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Signed by the Author.Condition: Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper faded and tanned at the margins, sealed mylar, with loss at the foot of the spine. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank with a book plate to the pastedown. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Top edge of the text heavily tanned. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned and musty.Description: Signed by the author on the first blank— unverified and reflected as such in the lack of premium and includes two typed poems with corrections entitled ‘The Experiment’ and ‘Philoctetes’. From the cover: “The poems in The Directions of Memory are about a wide range of subjects, but linked by common themes. Those in the first section, ‘The Anatomy of Love’, are about men and women, and the tangle of feelings that holds them together — or apart: they confront the fact of solitude, and the happiness and limitations of love, often from the women’s point of view. Then follows a section in which the poet ranges more widely to find his persona, speaking as an Irish saint of the fifth century, a child in a totalitarian country, a wife dreaming herself into the story of Judith and Holofernes — or more openly as a part of his own self. Finally comes a group of poems which make more explicit the theme that underlies the whole book: the passing of time, the constant traffic, in fact and memory, between past and present.

Mr Lerner’s poems have a strong emotional pressure behind them, firmly controlled. His work is fluent and outspoken, but he succeeds in avoiding mere rhetoric. His first collection (‘Domestic Interior and other Poems’) appeared in 1959. The present poems have all been written since, and most of them have appeared in literary magazines and periodicals.”

Thomas Hope 1769-1831 and The Neo-classical Idea by David Watkin (£11.50)Publisher: London: John Murray — 1968Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0719518199]Condition: Very Good — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper with a very small nick to the top edge of the upper panel and a marginally larger one to the foot of the lower. Price Clipped. Edges of the text block lightly spotted with a stain to the edges of the last few edges. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Contains: Black & white photographs; Black & white drawings; Appendices [5]; Plans;

From the cover: “Thomas Hope, 1769-1831, eccentric offspring of a Dutch banking family, employed his wealth and taste to impress on Regency society the principles of Neo-Classicism. While he invested in Old Masters, antique statuary and vases, he also patronised such contemporary artists as Flaxman, Thorvaldsen, Haydon and Benjamin West; and he anticipated William Morris by training craftsmen to make durable furniture from his own Greek and Egyptian designs. His London mansion was something between a djinn’s fabrication and a museum — filled at night with fashionable routs, by day with ticket-holding members of the public. His country place in Surrey was a model of all that an enlightened gentleman’s estate should be.

Although Hope prescribed classical austerity for others, he himself simultaneously flirted with oriental splendour and the Picturesque. He wrote a romantic novel called Anastasius, had himself and his wife painted in Turkish costumes, and backed his Greek vases with seraglio draperies. In this he expressed the yearning of his age to have every beauty, every strangeness, all at once; and being a man of character as well as feeling, he carried off his grand ideas superbly.

In Thomas Hope Dr Watkin has found a subject hitherto unknown except to cognoscenti, and, with much new material, has created round him a work rich in social and aesthetic history, full of delights for the discerning reader of today. His book, with its wealth of illustrations, many of which are published for the first time, is a highly instructive and entertaining picture of a past age. It also has significance now, bewildered as we are in much the same way by the present clamour of conflicting values.”
