TSR-2: Phoenix or Folly? by Frank Barnett-Jones (£104.00)Publisher: GMS Enterprises — 1994Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 187038427X]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and the top corners of the boards with commensurate wear to the dust wrapper. Leans slightly. Text complete, clean and tight. A nice copy of an umcommon title in any edition. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Diagrams;

From the cover: “In the late 1950’s the Government of the day embarked on a major initiative which was to change forever the basic structure of Britain’s Aviation Industry. At the same time the Royal Air Force had an urgent requirement for a new strike aircraft. From this emerged one of the most far-reaching military aviation programmes ever embarked upon by a British government up to that time. The subsequent arguments and debates for and against were voiced in all sections of the media, attracting both public attention and condemnation.

The new industry emerged from the ashes of the old as the British Aircraft Corporation and the Hawker Siddeley Group, however, the project that was formulated as the very incentive in bringing about the change was firstly condemned and then literally scrapped by a new, incoming government. It was always indicated that the project was cancelled because of its cost, but has this been used merely to disguise an underlying, alternative reason?

This book attempts to describe the aircraft, its systems and intended roles. At the same time it also traces the origins of the Operational Requirement and tries to piece together for the first time the controversial issues and personalities that conspired together to bring about the tragic downfall of the TSR-2.”

British Aircraft 1809-1914 by Peter Lewis (£74.00)Publisher: London: Putnam — 1962Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Poor Dust Wrapper. Edges of the dust wrapper somewhat frayed with a tear to the leading edge of the upper panel. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Chronological Tables; Plans;

From the cover: “Here presented for the first time are individual descriptions and histories of the different types of aeroplanes, and the seventeen airships, designed and constructed in Great Britain between 1809 and the outbreak of war in August, 1914.

The authoritative text, which is accompanied by 504 photographs and 106 three-view drawings, examines the various machines, both conventional and extremely unorthodox, which were used by the early British pioneers, from Sir George Cayley onwards, to lay the foundations of Britain’s prowess in the air. All types are recorded — gliders and powered, from monoplanes to multiplanes, ornithopters, seaplanes, flying-boats and helicopters. The introduction surveys the development of flying in the British Isles during the period, which is covered also by a useful chronology. This is the first time that such a comprehensive record has been made of one country’s pioneer aircraft, and it will prove to be an important addition to British aeronautical literature.”

Teamwork in Industry by F. J. Burns Morton (£63.00)Publisher: Chapman & Hall — 1948Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good — in Poor Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with loss at the head of the upper panel and closed tears to the lower. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Tanning and spotting to the blanks and endpapers. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned.Description: From the cover: “The author’s previous book, The New Foremanship, endeavoured to propound and analyse the problem of supervision in the light of present circumstances and likely trends. It was suggested that new methods of supervision were "necessary to bring social relationships, which in industry had remained static, into line with the great developments which had taken place in technical organisation; and further, what was needed in foremanship was also necessary in other managerial practices.

This present book, which is also addressed to all in authority and to those thinking employees who believe in the possibilities, of their jobs, sets out to show the direction of the second step. It examines the nature of better working relationships, and shows that harmonious, consciously directed working together leads to increased efficiency. Thus the name Teamwork in Industry.

The twelve chapters discuss such vital topics as the human factor and the influencing of human behaviour, co-operation and industrial relations, job satisfaction, selection and training of staff, incentives, leadership, supervision, discipline, absenteeism, working conditions and social organisation. The book concludes with a useful bibliography and index.”

Handley Page Aircraft Since 1907 Revised by Derek N. James by C. H. [Christopher Henry] Barnes (£56.00)Publisher: London: Putnam — 1987Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0851778038]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: 2nd (revised) edition, 1st printing, [First Published: 1976] Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps; Plans;

From the cover: “First heard in aviation a few years before the 1914-18 war, the name of Handley Page became one to conjure with when strategic bombing of Rhineland armament factories began in 1917 as a counter-blow to the German submarine blockade of the British Isles. After the war an O/400 and a V/1500 were the first two aircraft to fly all the way from England to India, and soon afterwards Handley Page pioneered commercial air transport services across the English Channel and in China, India and South Africa.

A new generation of twin- and four-engined monoplane bombers — Hampden and Halifax — emerged to challenge Hitler’s ambition between 1935 and 1945, giving rise in turn to the Hastings and Hermes transports of the 1950s; finally the nuclear age produced the Victor transonic bomber, which remains in service as the RAF’s long-range flight refuelling tanker A new line of smaller civil transports began with the acquisition in 1948 of Miles Aircraft Ltd and from the Reading factory stemmed the very successful Dart-Herald.

This book contains photographs, three-view drawings and data of every type of Handley Page aircraft built and flown, as well as many historic project drawings not previously published, and completes the author’s trilogy, which already includes Bristol Aircraft since 1910 and Shorts Aircraft since 1900 in the series.”

Crosville: State Owned Without Tears (edited and Revised by John A. Senior) by W. J. Crosland Taylor (£44.00)Publisher: Transport Publishing Company — 1987Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0863171397]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper with a very small nick to the bottom corner of the upper panel. Text complete, clean and tight. Limited edition indicated by a sticker to the pastedown. Description: First in this edition. [First: State Owned Without Tears 1948-1953 by Littlebury Bros. , 1954] Illustrated by way of: Black and White Photographs; A limited printing of 1750 copies of which this is number 1246.

From the cover: “State Owned Without Tears was originally published at the time when nationalisation of Crosville Motor Services was imminent, in 1953. Written by the then General Manager, W. J. Crosland Taylor, it continued the story of the Company’s history which had been taken up to 1948 in his earlier volume, The Sowing and The Harvest.

Both books have always been regarded as classics of their kind, for Crosland Taylor, in addition to being one of the great bus men of all time, had a flair for describing the Company’s fortunes in a way which many people outside the industry found as fascinating as did those who actually worked for the Crosville organisation.

The advent of de-regulation has removed what WJC always regarded as the dead hand of government, though whether he would have approved of the Thatcher Government’s policies and their effects on the industry may be judged to be another matter.

Both books have long been out of print and in the Autumn of 1986 TPC took the decision to revise them, principally by the inclusion of the photographs which could not be included in the early post-war period of restrictions on printing. The work has been greatly assisted by present day Crosville staff and although the new editions are no longer the official versions of the Company’s history, both will be seen to have the wholehearted approval of the present management.

Produced as limited editions, both titles are expected to become sought after in the same way as did the originals over thirty years ago.”

Shorts Aircraft Since 1900 by C. H. Barnes (revised By Derek N. James) (£36.00)Publisher: London: Putnam Aeronautical Books — 1989Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0851778194]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: 2nd (revised) edition, 1st printing, [First Published: 1967] Jacket illustration: Keith Woodcock's original painting shows Short Sunderland MR 5 RN273 of No 201 Squadron, RAF, taking off one evening from Sullom Voe, Shetland, in September 1952. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Tables; Plans;

From the cover: “From the first spherical balloons made by Eustace and Oswald Short, the author traces the brothers’ progress as engineers to the Aero Club till Wilbur Wright’s arrival in France in 1908 and their consequent change-over from balloons to aeroplanes — a decision endorsed by their eldest brother Horace, who joined them to set up the world’s first aircraft production line.

Their rapid expansion as aircraft suppliers to the Royal Navy and their notable progress with deck-launching, folding wings, buoyancy bags and sprung floats led to enormous production of the famous Short Type 184 during World War I, in which period the firm also built rigid airships.

Oswald Short’s pioneering work with a successful series of metal hulled flying-boats is described and their operational histories recorded.

Appendices list all Shorts’ constructors’ numbers, serials and registration marks. The book contains specifications for all Short types and variants, and complete lists to date of type designations and preliminary designs.

For this new edition the section on unbuilt projects has been expanded and the post-1945 story of Rochester’s last days and Northern Ireland’s new industry has been carried down to the present. The Skyvan and Belfast chapters have been up-dated and the 330, Sherpa and 360 have been added to the aircraft coverage, as well as notes on the forthcoming Tucano.”

Out of the Crisis by W. Edwards Deming (£34.00)Publisher: Cambridge University Press — 1988Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0521305535]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Top edge of the text block tanned. Description: From the cover: “This book examines two of the central issues facing industry — how to increase productivity without sacrificing quality, and how to capture markets from competitors. It is a practical book, with abundant illustrations, written for managers — whether in the manufacturing or service sectors. Dr Deming has a worldwide reputation for his work in establishing statistical process control techniques for quality as the route to competitive success in the new economic age. His involvement with Japanese managers is widely accepted as having contributed to their enviable reputation for quality manufactured goods.

The book provides a full account of Deming’s thinking on the primacy of management’s role in improving quality and productivity. He demonstrates what managers do wrong and how costs, dependability and quality can and must be improved. This is not just another manual of techniques; Deming provides a new theory of management which gets to the roots of the problems of industrial competitiveness which face managers today..”

Persona Granada: Some Memories of Sidney Bernstein and The Early Years of Independent Television by Denis Forman (£32.00)Publisher: London: Andre Deutsch — 1997Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0233989870]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Slightest lean otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: Contains: Black & white photographs;

From the cover: “When ITV first went on air in 1955, Granada Television soon established itself as the most innovative of the new independent television companies. Granada took risks, ignored conventions, and challenged conventional notions of how television programmes should be made. Coronation Street, the hard-hitting World in Action, adventurous drama productions — this was television that made people sit up and watch.

Denis Forman was there from the start, and in this richly detailed and compelling memoir he combines an affectionate portrait of Granada’s prime mover, the extraordinary Sidney Bernstein, with an insider’s account of the personalities behind the scenes and the triumphs — and occasional disasters — of this remarkable television company.

They were heady days. Granada defied the antiquated rules of political broadcasting with its ground-breaking coverage of a by-election which was to change the course of television’s relationship with politicians. There were frequent battles with the Independent Television Authority over investigative reports thought to have gone too far in exposing scandal and corruption. It was a time of creative ferment, a time when Granada’s team of talented programme-makers earned the company its enduring reputation.

Denis Forman charts the history of Granada with abundant wit and a refreshing candour. His own contribution to the Granada success story, culminating in his close personal involvement in the universally acclaimed The Jewel in the Crown, was immense. He is modest about his own achievements, and generous in his appreciation of the many colleagues — some of them later to become senior figures in television — who made Granada what it was. But as this engrossing memoir reveals, none of it could have happened without the towering presence of the original persona Granada, Sidney Bernstein: founding father, guiding spirit, and one of the most remarkable men of our century.”

From the cover: “The Cistercians in the Early Middle Ages seeks to portray the growth, conventual, cultural, spiritual and economic life, of a religious Order which was second to none in medieval Europe. Published to mark the nono-centenary of the foundation of the order at Citeaux in France in 1098, this volume concerns itself with the first 250 years of Cistercian history, sometimes called the ‘Golden Age’ of the Order, brought to a close by the Black Death.

No less than well over six hundred monasteries of ‘white monks’ spread throughout Europe, and into the Near East, and not only endeavoured to maintain an austere life of simplicity, accompanying the daily round of worship and prayer, but also played a significant role in bringing woodland and wasteland into cultivation. Sheep-farming was one of their noted activities, but they also participated successfully in industry and trade. In all this the monks were assisted by a large number of lay-brothers (known as the converse), who often outnumbered the monks by more than two to one, and who in practice undertook much of the manual labour.

The Cistercians left their mark in Europe in other ways, not least in some splendid architectural masterpieces, and in their contribution to annals and chronicles which tell of the political history, as well as of climatic and tectonic phenomena of their day. This volume endeavours to illustrate, with original maps and plans, much of the white monks’ activity, nor does it neglect the hundreds of Cistercian-affiliated nunneries which sought to emulate the male communities of the Order.”

Mr Rank: A Study of J. Arthur Rank and British Films by Alan Wood (£26.00)Publisher: London: Hodder & Stoughton — 1952Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding. Leans a little. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Price Clipped. Previous owners' gift inscription to the first blank. Description: Contains: Diagrams [1];

From the cover: “A great servant to his country — it is with Michael Balcon’s tribute to J. Arthur Rank that Mr. Wood ends his book; and having read this account of the extraordinary achievements of a man without intellectual pretensions but with courage, pertinacity and a simple religious faith, the reader may well agree. The entry of this plain Yorkshire flour-miller into the bizarre world of financiers, stars and directors — a world of which he knew nothing — makes a fascinating study, with many ironic twists.

But the book is more than the story of one man : it is almost the history of British films during the last twenty years, with a great deal of material never before published. Mr. Wood goes fully and clearly into the economic difficulties of film production, the effects of American competition, the dangers of the Rank Organisation’s own semi-monopoly, and the results of Government interference: while the author’s friendship with many of those in the industry allows a number of entertaining glimpses of famous film personalities. Mr. Rank is lively, informative, and (in part) highly controversial.”

Freedom And Organization 1814-1914 by Bertrand Russell (£24.00)Publisher: George Allen & Unwin — 1934Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good — in Poor Dust Wrapper. Edges of the dust wrapper somewhat frayed with loss to the top edge of both panels and the spine ends. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned. Description: From the cover: “This book covers the period 1814-1914, and aims at showing the weakening of old forms of authority as a result of Liberal assaults and the more or less unintended growth of new forms of organization owing to economic and technical developments. Its subject is thus the interaction of theory and practice in the politics of the hundred years between the fall of Napoleon and the Great War. It opens with the Congress of Vienna and the Principle of Legitimacy, the Holy Alliance and the domination of Metternich. It then passes to economic theory from Malthus to Marx, as the outcome of early industrialism and the source of Radical and Socialist politics. American development is considered in two phases: the growth of democracy from Jefferson to Lincoln, and the transition from free competition to monopoly in the period from the Civil War to the Great War. Returning to Europe, the Principle of Nationality, as an outcome of Liberalism, is shown as a source of international anarchy. Bismarck, German unity, and German economic development lead to conflicts with Slav Nationalism and British trade; the British seek compensation in Africa, the Russians in the Far East. The growth of national monopolies in industry leads to economic imperialism, identifying economic and national rivalry, and increasing the importance of the State. Concentration of national power grows as International organization disappears, and war results.”Notes: Size: 9" x 5¾". Blue boards with Gilt titling to the Spine. 528 pages. The Sea Coast by J. A. [James Alfred] Steers (£23.00)Publisher: Collins — 1954Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper has been sealed in mylar which has tanned with age. Pages very gently age-tanned. Description: 2nd (revised & corrected) printing. [First Published: 1953] Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs [10]; Diagrams; Maps [52];

From the cover: “Are there many Britons who have never seen the sea? Everybody knows the answer to this question: the sea is part of our British life, the coast of Britain a great strip of incredible length upon which its trade, commerce, empire and industry have risen. Britain’s coast is Britain’s life. This book is a natural history of that coast — a natural history in the broadest sense.

Apart from its length and complexity Britain’s coastline is unique in many other ways; Indeed, there is nothing like it anywhere else in the world. No island, no country is so rich in contrasts. The British coasts have everything, from towering cliffs rising a thousand feet and more sheer from deep water, to miles of tidal slobs and flats, restless shingle spits, shifting beaches moving sand-dunes, immobile rock headlands. The extraordinary consequences of a varied climate and a complicated geology are shown in Britain’s coasts, even more effectively than in her fascinating inland scenery.”

The first section gives a succinct description of the main developments since 1944 in all major contexts — economy, society, domestic politics and foreign relations. The authors then analyse the economic, social and cultural structures of present-day France, and discuss the institutional framework of decision-making and the major political forces involved in it. There are also chapters on French external and defence policy and on the education system, all of which are set in the context of the political system as a whole. Quota Quickies: The Birth of the British 'B' Film by Steve Chibnall (£21.00)Publisher: London: BFI Publishing — 2007Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 9781844571550]Condition: Near Fine. Description: Contains: Black & white photographs; Tables; Filmography;

From the cover: “David Lean, John Mills, Laurence Olivier, Vivien Leigh, and a host of other famous names from British film surprisingly began their screen careers on ‘Quota Quickies’. These low-budget second features of the 1930s have become notorious as the films that American distributors used to bring British cinema into disrepute and ruin its prospects of international expansion. But is this sorry reputation really deserved?

Steve Chibnall’s carefully researched study questions the received wisdom about these modest films, which so often offered a slice of British life to audiences waiting for the Hollywood main course. It interrogates the conditions of their production, the politics of the attempts to censor and suppress them, and, by examining detailed evidence from one provincial city, supplies insights into their distribution and exhibition.

The quickies emerge from this examination as a significant source of cultural representations, a vital training ground for actors and film-makers, and, occasionally, as innovative and even radical pictures in their own right.”

Marvel is in the classic American tradition: from hick travelling salesman to president of a giant multi-national that can rival the mighty IBM, Marvel succeeds by flouting convention and rewriting the rule-book — spurred on by gritty determination and the loyalty of those around him. But as his empire expands, so too do the pressures on his life-both professional and personal-yet, somehow, through two world wars, family tragedy, labour unrest, political chicanery and constant stress from fledgling members of his ever-growing dynasty, J.D. still manages to keep just one step ahead. Until, one day, already a grandfather and anxious about a successor, he reveals to an unsuspecting world the fruits of his hitherto secret project — the ultimate in computer sophistication, the final creative act... Both as a fictional history of the birth of the computer industry and as a gripping, powerful story of the construction of one man’s personal empire in the fast-paced world of high-tech electronics, Marvels confirms R.E. Scientific Principles of Feeding Farm Live Stock: Proceedings of A Conference Held At Brighton, 11-13 November 1958 by Anon. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with slight fraying at the spine ends and corners, fading to the spine. Price Clipped. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Spotting to the blanks and pastedowns. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: From the cover: “This book provides the most up-to-date information that is available about the principles of feeding farm live stock. It will be of value as a standard reference book not only to research workers but to advisers and students.

After the Second World War the need for increased production of animal products, the development of agricultural chemistry and the growth of the feeding stuffs industry led to greater use of balanced rations for live stock. The proper balancing of these rations calls for a sound basis on which to’ evaluate and state the nutritional requirements of live stock, but most of the existing standards are based on research carried out half a century ago.

The principles of feeding farm live stock have lately been under review, and newer ideas have been put forward by research workers in different countries. Farmer & Stock-Breeder recently got the advisers, national and commercial, to talk over these matters with research workers and see whether any restatement of principles might be helpful to all concerned. The conference called for this purpose produced not only the many valuable papers in this book but the considerable amount of constructive discussion and suggestions recorded here.”

From the fertile farmland of Lancaster County, where the famous Old Order Amish still plough their fields with horses and mules, to the rushing white water of the Youghiogheny River, to the Gettysburg and Brandywine battlefields and Valley Forge, to the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania, to Philadelphia’s Chestnut Street and Independence Hall, to Lake Erie and its unique Presque Isle, Smith captures all of Pennsylvania’s beauty during every season of the year. In an informative text which complements the photographs, Cronan Minton describes Pennsylvania as “the archetypal American state”. He traces the state’s fascinating history — from the days of its founder, William Penn through to the Revolutionary War and the Westward movement of the pioneers, up to the Industrial Revolution and the development of Pennsylvania’s canal and railroad systems, to its present status as one of America’s four greatest industrial and urban statesNotes: Illustrated by Clyde H. The Road to Prosperity: An Industrial Policy by Ernest Marples (£19.50)Publisher: Staples Press — 1947Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with a triangular tear to the head of the spine, short closed tear to the foot of the same and soiling to the lower panel. Top edge of the text block tanned. Tanning to the blanks and endpapers. Text complete, clean and tight otherwise.Description: From the cover: “THE ROAD TO PROSPERITYsays this book, is Industrial Co-partnership, the essential ingredients of which are Joint Consultation, Employee Shareholding and Profit Sharing. There can be no true Co-partnership whenever these three features are not working in effective combination.

The author argues that Co-partnership is the key to production, and therefore to prosperity. He rests this claim on the belief that, though human beings need material incentives to labour, they need also a satisfying spiritual climate in which to perform their labours. This satisfaction cannot be attained unless all concerned, from highest to lowest, feel for their enterprise not only an essential responsibility, but a common pride and pleasure in its success. When all have become partners, sharing the rewards and, within limits, the risks of what they do, a new relationship arises between them and a new sense of their fellowship as men. Thus, in every undertaking, spiritual and material incentives can be made to work in the same direction, and the resulting benefit will accrue not only to man as consumer but to man as man.

The author denies that there is anything Utopian in this, and the body of the book is mainly concerned to show what are the points to be watched in establishing a scheme of Industrial Co-partnership, what dangers must be avoided and what precautions taken. He draws freely on the experience of many concerns which are already operating such schemes successfully, and has reproduced in outline some of the more notable. Nor is he content, like so many, to put his trust in exhortation alone, but, like a practical statesman, suggests a way by which the tax machine can coax both sides of industry into the practice of Co-partnership.

As a politician in a democracy, he seeks also to recommend his ideas politically. They accord, he maintains, with the true philosophy of Conservatism, namely, the spreading of power and property in many independent hands, as against the Socialist philosophy, which is the centralisation of both in the small area of London known genetically as Whitehall.”

Inside Japan's Power Houses: The Culture, Mystique and Future of Japan's Greatest Corporations by Kevin Rafferty (£19.00)Publisher: London: Weidenfeld & Nicolson — 1995Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0297814540]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges with a nick to the top corner of the lower panel. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Tables;

From the cover: “Exactly 50 years ago the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki left Japan defeated and in ashes. Today it has risen miraculously to be one of the world’s two economic megapowcrs and is demanding a role as a political great power. The story of Japan’s phoenix-like rise has often been told, but the economic culture of the country’s mega-businesses is still a mystery, and so are the powerful ties between businessmen, bureaucrats and politicians, the ‘unholy trinity’ of Japan Inc.

Kevin Rafferty, who has spent 25 years living and working in Asia, has been granted privileged access to the powerhouses of Japan’s economic miracle and has talked freely to the key figures, including grand opera singer Yoh Kurosawa of the Industrial Bank of Japan, Hampstead-born and Harvard-educated Minoru Makihara of Mitsubishi Corporation, shogi master Fumio Sato of Toshiba and the Toyoda car-making brothers, Shoichiro and Tatsuro, perhaps the most powerful men in Japanese industry. In a country where open and vigorous argument is often avoided, these men talk frankly about their achievements and the problems ahead.

But the author has gone beyond the powerful companies, like Matsushita, Nippon Steel, Toshiba, Toyota and the aerospace and banking giants. He examines the much-vaunted education system to assess the future challenge. He has also talked to the almighty mandarins of the finance ministry and the all too frequently corrupt politicians. The result is a cool appraisal of how different Japan really is, of the price paid for economic maturity and a strong yen, the need for political reform and — most vital for the rest of the world — whether Japan can become a ‘normal’ nation sitting at the top political table.”

From the cover: “With improvements in communications bringing us into more rapid contact with distant lands, general interest has been aroused in the ways of life of their peoples. In a readable manner the author outlines recent developments in modem social anthropology, and demonstrates its uses in improving international relations. Most of the examples given are drawn from recent field-work, and do not appear in the usual textbooks; so far they have been available only in articles in periodicals. The author has much of interest to say on such controversial subjects as the brain capacities of different races, comparative codes of manners, and the ‘simple way of life of the savage’.”Notes: Size: 7¼" x 4¾". Mildly bumped at head & tail of spine and corners. A tight copy.Description: Blue cloth with gilt titling to spine. It seems that the electronics service industry is constantly faced with the problem of training itself in order to keep pace with a rapidly growing industry. In 1946, the servicing of FM receivers presented a real challenge even to those who were well trained in FM fundamentals. Shortly thereafter, an even greater challenge appeared television. Early estimates of the growth of the television industry were far too conservative. Even so, it was feared that the service industry could not maintain and service the television receivers being produced. It is our sincere wish that this book will play its intended part in the tremendous task of training personnel for colour receiver servicing. 22pp. Index. Size: 4to Demy (11" x 8½")
