The Oil Engine Manual by D. S. D. [Denys Stephen Dodsley] Williams (£69.00)Publisher: Temple Press — 1956Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with nicks at the spine ends and a short, triangular, crease and tear to the foot of the upper panel. Tanning to the blanks. Text complete, clean and tight otherwise. Description: 6th edition, 1st printing, [First Published: 1939] Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Graphs [1 Fold-Out]; Diagrams; Tables; Period Advertisements;

From the cover: “The first edition of this Manual appeared some 16 years ago and later editions were widely used as books of instruction during the Second World War. Considerable developments in engine design and a variety of applications took place during the period covered by the preceding five editions. In more recent years, however, the pace has, far from slackening, actually accelerated, so that the fundamental background of oil engine design has undergone considerable changes. The number of manufacturers has varied, whilst their power ranges have been made more extensive, even though the actual number of engine models has decreased somewhat through rationalization.

This new edition of “The Oil Engine” Manual has been very largely rewritten to cover changes occurring during the past five years. It is now fully up-to-date, as is only possible when the work is produced in the office of a journal dealing with the subject on a full time and highly specialized basis.

Chapters in the first part of the Manual give the background for engine design (of various forms) for all duties other than marine applications. In the second part, leading details are given of all the current makes of oil engine constructed in the United Kingdom, again for all purposes other than ship and boat duties. The third and final part is a technical appendix, which will be found useful, not only for those concerned with engine manufacture, but for those engaged in the use of such prime movers. Students also will find the whole book of permanent value to them in their work relating to this type of heat engine.”

Teamwork in Industry by F. J. Burns Morton (£63.00)Publisher: Chapman & Hall — 1948Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good — in Poor Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with loss at the head of the upper panel and closed tears to the lower. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Tanning and spotting to the blanks and endpapers. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned.Description: From the cover: “The author’s previous book, The New Foremanship, endeavoured to propound and analyse the problem of supervision in the light of present circumstances and likely trends. It was suggested that new methods of supervision were "necessary to bring social relationships, which in industry had remained static, into line with the great developments which had taken place in technical organisation; and further, what was needed in foremanship was also necessary in other managerial practices.

This present book, which is also addressed to all in authority and to those thinking employees who believe in the possibilities, of their jobs, sets out to show the direction of the second step. It examines the nature of better working relationships, and shows that harmonious, consciously directed working together leads to increased efficiency. Thus the name Teamwork in Industry.

The twelve chapters discuss such vital topics as the human factor and the influencing of human behaviour, co-operation and industrial relations, job satisfaction, selection and training of staff, incentives, leadership, supervision, discipline, absenteeism, working conditions and social organisation. The book concludes with a useful bibliography and index.”

The Puritan Gift: Triumph, Collapse and Revival of An American Dream by Kenneth Hopper & William Hopper (£53.00)Publisher: I. B. Tauris & Co. — 2007Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1850434190]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black and White Photographs;

From the cover: “Where does the Protestant work ethic come from? And how did America achieve such dominance in management for so long?

The Puritan Gift traces the origins and characteristics of an American managerial culture which, over the course of three centuries, turned a handful of small colonies into the greatest economic and political power on earth. It argues that the energy, social mobility, competitiveness and capacity for innovation, all of which lie at the heart of that culture, have their origins in the discipline and ethos of America’s first wave of European immigrants: the Puritans. Drawing lessons from their own extensive experience, the authors warn that, as America distances itself from the core values which underlay its commercial and economic success during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, it puts its own future prosperity and security at risk.

The book also explores how American managerial culture has spread throughout the world. In particular it examines the impact of the US occupation of Japan on the social and manufacturing mores of that country and explains how America’s inherited style of management interacted with Japanese traditions.

This is an original exploration of the dramatic and far-reaching consequences of the Puritans’ ‘gift’ to America — the ethos which produced the early success of America and what came to be known as the American dream.”

The Thatcher Era and Its Legacy by Peter Riddell (£48.00)Publisher: Blackwell — 1991Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0631182683]Condition: Good. Light reading creases to the spine. Pages lightly age-tanned. Description: First in this edition. [First: The Thatcher Decade, 1991] Jacket illustration: Mrs Thatcher leaving No. 10 for Buckingham Palace after resigning.

From the cover: “In 1989, in The Thatcher Decade, Peter Riddell provided the most wide-ranging and accessible analysis to date of the impact of Mrs. Thatcher’s government on the British economy and society in the 1980s. Now, following Margaret Thatcher’s sudden and dramatic departure from office in November 1990, he extends his classic account of the Thatcher years to include an assessment of her legacy and its consequences for Britain in the next decade.

Margaret Thatcher, one of the most remarkable of all British prime ministers, presided over a period of far-reaching change in Britain’s economy, industrial structure, labour market, society and place in the world. Looking beyond the personality of Mrs. Thatcher, Peter Riddell discusses how far these changes reflected the actions of the government, intended or unintended, rather than the influence of broader, longer-term trends common to other industrialized countries. Was there, in short, a Thatcher revolution? What are the consequences of her legacy?

The Thatcher Era is essential reading for all those interested in current politics.”

Twentieth Century Industrial Archaeology by Michael Stratton & Barrie Trinder (£44.00)Publisher: London: E & FN Spon — 2000Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0419246800]Condition: Near Fine. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Tables;

From the cover: “This book offers a new view of twentieth century Britain. At one level it is a guidebook to the artefacts, the buildings and the landscapes that have shaped our civilisation of the past hundred years. In the tradition of landscape history established by W. G. Hoskins and Maurice Beresford, the authors offer journeys along by-passes, amongst the mounds where ordinance factories once stood, through industrial estates and garden suburbs, and to chemical manufacturing complexes where the public rarely venture. This book identifies the places which have shaped modern industrial Britain, the twentieth century equivalents of Cromford, Ironbridge, Blaenavon and New Lanark, and shows how the observation of subtle features in the landscape can illuminate the recent history of almost any town or stretch of countryside. Landscapes are re-populated and re-animated through the skilful use of reminiscences and observations, and by drawing on process recording by professional archaeologists, and throughout the book there is an awareness of the links between places where goods were produced and the museums where they are now displayed.

The book also shows how the archaeological record raises questions about some of the major issues of twentieth century British history, the production of munitions in two world wars, the booms in house building of the inter-war period and of the years between 1953 and 1973, the nature of coal-mining communities, and the take-up of scientific and technological innovations.”

Out of the Crisis by W. Edwards Deming (£34.00)Publisher: Cambridge University Press — 1988Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0521305535]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Top edge of the text block tanned. Description: From the cover: “This book examines two of the central issues facing industry — how to increase productivity without sacrificing quality, and how to capture markets from competitors. It is a practical book, with abundant illustrations, written for managers — whether in the manufacturing or service sectors. Dr Deming has a worldwide reputation for his work in establishing statistical process control techniques for quality as the route to competitive success in the new economic age. His involvement with Japanese managers is widely accepted as having contributed to their enviable reputation for quality manufactured goods.

The book provides a full account of Deming’s thinking on the primacy of management’s role in improving quality and productivity. He demonstrates what managers do wrong and how costs, dependability and quality can and must be improved. This is not just another manual of techniques; Deming provides a new theory of management which gets to the roots of the problems of industrial competitiveness which face managers today..”

Measurement of Responsibility: A Study of Work, Payment and Individual Capacity by Elliott Jaques (£33.00)Publisher: Tavistock Publications — 1956Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with several short tears, a little loss at the spine ends and a 1" closed tear to the head of the upper panel. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Small name sticker to the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned.Description: From the cover: “THE MEASUREMENT OF RESPONSIBILITY presents perhaps the most funda mental approach yet achieved to the recurring individual and social stresses which disturb the industrial scene. Its theme is that one of the central factors underlying these disturbances is the absence of any objective and agreed method of assessing the re sponsibility carried by individuals at their work.

In the course of practical work by the author in collaboration with members of the Glacier Metal Com pany (an engineering concern), a re definition of the problem has emerged. What is experienced by individuals as level or weight or size of responsi bility has been observed to be con nected solely with the discretion they are required to exercise in doing their work. It has furthermore been dis covered that level of responsibility can be measured objectively and pre cisely by the maximum span of time during which an individual is expected to exercise discretion on his own account until his use of discretion is subjected to review.

By using this measurement — which he terms the time-span of discretion — Dr. Jaques has noted that individuals carrying the same maximum time-span in their work demand—quite independently — as a fair and just return for their work, precisely the same earnings and the same status, regardless of the type of work con cerned. He concludes from these findings that an unrecognized wage and salary structure is operated in tuitively in industry. But because it is unrecognized, departures from it are likely. And it is precisely such de partures which lead to trouble.

In the light of his findings, the author re-examines the meaning of work, of payment for work, and of the capacity of individuals to exercise discretion and discharge responsibility.

The methods described, and the results already obtained from their use, may indicate a route towards the resolution of some aspects of the industrial unrest and individual dis satisfaction with work which are such a crippling feature of modern industrial life. The book, in style as well as in content, is intended for economists, sociologists, political scientists, psychologists, and other social scientists — as well as industrial ists, trade unionists, government officials, and other administrators who are concerned with these problems.”

The Late, Great Pennsylvania Station by Lorraine Diehl (£33.00)Publisher: The Stephen Greene Press (Vermont) — 1987Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0828906033]Condition: Very Good. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Black & White Drawings;

From the cover: “New York City’s Pennsylvania Station, conceived as a symbol of the wealth and power of America’s mightiest railroad, became a national monument during its short life. This history of the famous depot is not only a story of the superb achievement of architect Charles Pollen Me Kin, but also a tale of human struggle and of a complex and dangerous engineering triumph. Lorraine Diehl’s lively, authoritative text, together with vintage photographs and drawings, recaptures the classical grandeur of the building and the drama and turbulence of its times — from the sunny pre — World War I era through 1963, when it was destroyed in the appalling act of civic vandalism that spurred the modern Landmark Preservation movement.”

Hong Kong's History: State and Society Under Colonial Rule by Edited by Tak-Wing Ngo (£32.00)Publisher: London & New York: Routledge — 1999Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0415208688]Condition: Very Good. Description: First in this, paperback, edition. Illustrated by way of: Tables;

From the cover: “Hong Kong’s rise from obscure fishing port to world city is usually put down to good colonial rule by Britain. This book challenges such a view and shows how the city’s success was shaped by the ruling elite and other native Hong Kongers.

Rewriting Hong Kong’s history from the bottom up, the chapters investigate vital, but hitherto obscured, aspects of the colony’s rise. They cover the Chinese collaboration with the colonial regime, legal discrimination and intimidation, rural politics, social movements, government-business relations, industrial policy, flexible manufacturing and colonial historiography.

Drawing together contributions from historians, sociologists and political scientists, the book highlights the role played by a variety of social actors in Hong Kong’s history and differs both from recent celebrations of British colonialism and anti-colonial Chinese nationalism.”

Red Hill: A Mining Community by Tony Parker (£28.00)Publisher: William Heinemann — 1986Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0434577715]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: From the cover: “The miners’ strike of 1984-5 was one of the longest and most bitter in Britain’s history, and polarised arguments and emotions with more force than any other industrial dispute for years. Six months after it ended, Tony Parker went to the north-east of England to discover the feelings and thoughts of a community around a coal-mine scheduled to be closed, but where there was still hope that the National Coal Board might reprieve it.

Talking with those on both sides of the dispute — miners, their wives, Union officials, policemen, shopkeepers, young people, Coal Board officials, schoolteachers and many others — he offers a truthful and moving portrait of life in a coalfield community today. If they close the pit, they’re closing down my life says a third-generation miner, one of 800 men there whose future, ten years ago, seemed completely secure. A nervous strikebreaker, ostracised by his workmates and feeling betrayed by the delay in transferring him to another pit, talks of the loneliness and isolation of his life. And an industrial chaplain denounces the blatant evil of government strategy during the strike. Tony Parker also talked with many miners’ wives: some of them felt they had discovered themselves for the first time and been invigorated and changed for ever by their involvement with women’s support groups, while others’ marriages had broken under the strain. From this wealth of personal stories, recorded and set down with characteristic sensitivity, a picture emerges of the strike’s causes and effects which is in sharp contrast to the view presented at the time by the media.

This is a vivid social document, giving an unforgettable portrait of Red Hill, a contemporary mining community.”

Wisdom Of The Wild: How We Treat Our Planet by Anon. (£26.50)Publisher: Word Wide Fund for Nature — 1993Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges. Presentation plate to the first blank.Description: Illustrated with colour photographs. From the cover: “There is no turning back. There never has been in history. Two hundred million American citizens are not going to leave the USA just to give back to the Indians the land that was stolen from them. The Inuit in Greenland are not about to climb into their kayaks to paddle back up the river of history. The wisdom with which “wild” peoples have animated their world cannot be fetched back at will. Nevertheless, there is a great deal to learn. This, for example: how, on the threshold of the third millennium, can we live once again in a finite world without consuming it? Pedagogues tell us that children need elements of the wild and disorder in order to become mentally sound adults. The child in its den is said to be subconsciously remembering the feeling of safety which our ancestors experienced in caves in the childhood of mankind. In Sweden, they let children fly back to the beginnings of humanity on the wings of their imagination, as it were. The wild as a tonic.

Henry David Thoreau’s suggestion that every major city should have some wildness in its vicinity (because otherwise its inhabitants would revert to the wild) is almost one hundred and fifty years old — and highly topical in view of the frustration which people feel in our concrete bunkers.

An end must be put to the dominance of the right angle. Protection programmes for spacious areas of wilderness have one purpose, among others, namely to preserve the charm of untouched nature. Real-life magic! Magic, or rather cheap tricks — that is what our oh-so-en-lightened world thought of the healing knowledge of the jungle Indians for such a long time. Until, at the sight of the burning rain forests, they realised that the best pharmacy in the world was going up in flames.

The awareness of its utility should not be the rescuers’ sole motive, however. If we only take up arms in defence of the earth where our immediate living conditions are threatened, we shall soon be sitting amidst the ruins of a barren planet. It is (unfortunately, some would say) not the case that when the trees die, man also dies immediately. There are no trees in the Mongolian steppes, but they are still not dead. The fact is, as an Indian chief once said: “After the deaths of plants and animals, you will die of the great loneliness in your hearts.” An appeal has been filed against this death sentence. This book contains a few passages from the defence counsel’s speech.”

Victorian Britain and Ireland in Colour by Janice Anderson & Reinhard Schultz (£26.00)Publisher: Carlton — 2005Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1844425584]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges. Leans slightly otherwise a very well presented copy.Description: From the cover: “The Victorian age was one of expansion in many areas, none more so than that of JM travel. With the success of explorers worldwide people’s curiosity grew, and the advent of the railroad in Great Britain and Ireland, which at that time was part of the United Kingdom, meant that the general public could do their own exploring. Many parts of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales that had, at one time, seemed remote were now within relatively easy travelling distance.

This collection of unique polychrome colour photographs, which have never been seen before, captures many of the vistas that became so popular with Victorian holidaymakers -from the quaint and picturesque snapshots of Devon and Cornwall to the tranquillity of the Irish countryside via the beautiful coastline of Wales or the hustle and bustle of London, up to the broads of Norfolk and further north to the wild, heather-strewn hills and awe-inspiring lochs of Scotland.

Many of these sites are still highly popular holiday venues and with good reason, since for the most part they have been protected for historical or environmental reasons. What they share is an abundance of charm and character and, in the cases of those rural and coastal locations, a measure of, peace and tranquillity.

Accompanied by informative, and often thought-provoking captions, these pictures will transport the reader back to a time when the pace of life was, for all its new inventions, a little calmer and more leisurely. Victorian Britain & Ireland in Colour is a thoroughly engaging window on to a bygone age that will captivate readers.”

Steam: An Evocative Tribute to the Last Days of Steam Trains by Colin Garratt (£21.00)Publisher: London: Bounty Books — 2006Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Text complete, clean and tight but the last leaf slightly mis-trimmed at the bottom corner. Description: Contains: Colour photographs;

From the cover: “This book is the finest visual tribute to the steam locomotive ever published. Colin Garratt’s text and photography reflects his unique odyssey to document, in pictures and words, the Last Steam Locomotives of the World. With hundreds of matchless photographs, this book vividly portrays real working steam eking out its final moments amid the great landscapes of the world.

No preserved or tourist revival trains appear within these pages for they lie outside the scope of Colin Garratt’s work. The vast majority of locomotives depicted in this book will be, or more likely have been, broken up. This book covers all continents and includes subjects from all the main schools of locomotive design, vividly depicted in every conceivable mood and environment.

The steam locomotive is a sensuous and beautiful creation. It is the one truly living machine and Colin Garratt’s unparalleled photography captures every nuance of its personality. In the course of his expeditions, he has visited some of the remotest places on earth and some of the adventures described in words in this volume are truly breathtaking. He continues to scour the ends of the earth in search of imperilled survivors.”

The Road to Prosperity: An Industrial Policy by Ernest Marples (£19.50)Publisher: Staples Press — 1947Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with a triangular tear to the head of the spine, short closed tear to the foot of the same and soiling to the lower panel. Top edge of the text block tanned. Tanning to the blanks and endpapers. Text complete, clean and tight otherwise.Description: From the cover: “THE ROAD TO PROSPERITYsays this book, is Industrial Co-partnership, the essential ingredients of which are Joint Consultation, Employee Shareholding and Profit Sharing. There can be no true Co-partnership whenever these three features are not working in effective combination.

The author argues that Co-partnership is the key to production, and therefore to prosperity. He rests this claim on the belief that, though human beings need material incentives to labour, they need also a satisfying spiritual climate in which to perform their labours. This satisfaction cannot be attained unless all concerned, from highest to lowest, feel for their enterprise not only an essential responsibility, but a common pride and pleasure in its success. When all have become partners, sharing the rewards and, within limits, the risks of what they do, a new relationship arises between them and a new sense of their fellowship as men. Thus, in every undertaking, spiritual and material incentives can be made to work in the same direction, and the resulting benefit will accrue not only to man as consumer but to man as man.

The author denies that there is anything Utopian in this, and the body of the book is mainly concerned to show what are the points to be watched in establishing a scheme of Industrial Co-partnership, what dangers must be avoided and what precautions taken. He draws freely on the experience of many concerns which are already operating such schemes successfully, and has reproduced in outline some of the more notable. Nor is he content, like so many, to put his trust in exhortation alone, but, like a practical statesman, suggests a way by which the tax machine can coax both sides of industry into the practice of Co-partnership.

As a politician in a democracy, he seeks also to recommend his ideas politically. They accord, he maintains, with the true philosophy of Conservatism, namely, the spreading of power and property in many independent hands, as against the Socialist philosophy, which is the centralisation of both in the small area of London known genetically as Whitehall.”

Inside Japan's Power Houses: The Culture, Mystique and Future of Japan's Greatest Corporations by Kevin Rafferty (£19.00)Publisher: London: Weidenfeld & Nicolson — 1995Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0297814540]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges with a nick to the top corner of the lower panel. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Tables;

From the cover: “Exactly 50 years ago the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki left Japan defeated and in ashes. Today it has risen miraculously to be one of the world’s two economic megapowcrs and is demanding a role as a political great power. The story of Japan’s phoenix-like rise has often been told, but the economic culture of the country’s mega-businesses is still a mystery, and so are the powerful ties between businessmen, bureaucrats and politicians, the ‘unholy trinity’ of Japan Inc.

Kevin Rafferty, who has spent 25 years living and working in Asia, has been granted privileged access to the powerhouses of Japan’s economic miracle and has talked freely to the key figures, including grand opera singer Yoh Kurosawa of the Industrial Bank of Japan, Hampstead-born and Harvard-educated Minoru Makihara of Mitsubishi Corporation, shogi master Fumio Sato of Toshiba and the Toyoda car-making brothers, Shoichiro and Tatsuro, perhaps the most powerful men in Japanese industry. In a country where open and vigorous argument is often avoided, these men talk frankly about their achievements and the problems ahead.

But the author has gone beyond the powerful companies, like Matsushita, Nippon Steel, Toshiba, Toyota and the aerospace and banking giants. He examines the much-vaunted education system to assess the future challenge. He has also talked to the almighty mandarins of the finance ministry and the all too frequently corrupt politicians. The result is a cool appraisal of how different Japan really is, of the price paid for economic maturity and a strong yen, the need for political reform and — most vital for the rest of the world — whether Japan can become a ‘normal’ nation sitting at the top political table.”

The Human Factor in Aircraft Accidents by David Beaty (£19.00)Publisher: London: The Scientific Book Club — 1969Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded. Bruised at the tail of the spine. Pages lightly age-tanned with heavier offset to the endpapers. Description: Illustrated by way of: Appendices [2]; Diagrams;

From the cover: “Although considerable progress has been made in increasing the reliability of airplanes, very little has been accomplished in reducing the element of human error in aircraft accidents.

So said the first International Civil Aviation Organisation’s first volume of accident reports seventeen years ago. But in the interim the view that human error accidents are inevitable has prevailed. It is this view that David Beaty attacks in The Human Factor in Aircraft Accidents. Investigating into an almost totally unexplored area, he has related aircraft accidents to known psychological concepts of fatigue, perception, laterality, conflict, frustration, learning and decision-taking.

This book takes a cool scientific look at the whole problem. Not at all sensational, but none the less of exciting interest, it tells the stories of aircraft accidents and interprets them in psychological terms. And at the same time, it suggests the prospect that, if psychological factors were properly investigated and better understood, a considerable cut would be effected in the now, rising aircraft accident rate.”

Italy 1530-1630 by Eric Cochrane (£18.50)Publisher: London & New York: Longman — 1988Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0582483646]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper has slipped a little, moving the titling off-centre on the spine and exposing the original fold on the leading edge of the upper panel. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Contains: Black & white plates [12]; Maps [1];

From the cover: “Italy 1530-1630 is the latest volume to appear in the distinguished Longman History of Italy, edited by Professor Denys Hay. It covers what is, for most English-speaking readers, one of the most obscure periods of Italian history. What we do hear of it is almost always pejorative, an unrelieved tale of political absolutism, rural refeudalization, economic crisis, religious repression, and cultural decline. But this picture is both incomplete and inaccurate, and in his eagerly-awaited survey Eric Cochrane has at last given the period its due. It magnificently sums up a lifetime’s study of this neglected century.

The period begins with the Sack of Rome in 1527 and the chaos of foreign invasion, and it ends with a series of destabilizing shocks — the War of Monferrato, the conflict between Pope Paul V and Venice, and the ravages of plague. Yet this century also saw the completion of the great masterpieces of the High Renaissance by Michelangelo and his contemporaries and the audacious experiments of their Mannerist and early Baroque successors. Professor Cochrane examines the achievements of these later masters with a seriousness and sympathy they have not always received from English-speaking historians. Their work, he argues, must be seen as a development, and not as a rejection, of their High Renaissance models.

But the achievements of the age were not solely artistic. The Treaty of Cateau-Cambresis in 1559 brought fifty years of peace, stability, and development — a time of political reconstruction, population increase, and industrial and commercial recovery. This was an age of profound religious piety and ecclesiastical reform: the age of Ignatius Loyola and the Society of Jesus, of Carlo Borromeo, and above all of the Council of Trent and the Counter-Reformation. Indeed, it was also an age of intellectual ferment, before the trial and abjuration of Galileo in 1633.

The history of Italy in the century after the Renaissance is a giant puzzle. Finding all the pieces, let alone fitting them together convincingly, is a quixotic goal. Yet Eric Cochrane, in his final challenging testament, not only gives shape to the period but also brings it exuberantly alive.”

[ISBN: 1859674550]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the edges. Leans slightly. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Later Printing. Illustrated with colour photographs. From the cover: “Since the birth of the railroads in the early Industrial Age, people across the world have been fascinated by the locomotive as an enduring symbol of the advance of technology and as a powerful means of transport. From the early beginnings of steam power to today’s awe-inspiring high-speed passenger trains, The World Encyclopedia of Locomotives spans nearly two centuries of locomotive development worldwide in an easy-to-use format that will appeal to every railway enthusiast.

Divided into three sections, the book is organized chronologically, documenting developments and innovations in a concise and authoritative text.

Part One — The Birth of the Railways charts the very beginnings of locomotive design up to 1900. Starting with the British locomotives of the 1830s and the Battle of the Gauges, we move on to the early North American freight trains and the great building schools across the world.

Part Two — The Golden Age of Steam details the early British innovations in steam; the American Mikados, Shays, Switchers and Record Breakers; the early Canadian freight trains; European mountain power; and the enduring steam locomotives of India and Latin America — many of which were in use until recently.

Part Three — The 1950s to the Present Day explains the crossover from steam to diesel and electric. It looks at how these changes transformed the locomotive throughout the world into a superior passenger and freight pulling power, making it the supreme form of transport. Bringing us to the present day, this last section highlights the latest developments in world-class locomotive technology, including Europe’s Eurostar and the Japanese bullet train.

Written by world experts in the field and illustrated with over 700 photographs and artwork, The World Encyclopedia of Locomotives is an exhaustive reference work that takes an illuminating glance at a technology that was pivotal in the development of the modern world.”

The Efficiency Experts: An Impartial Survey of Management Consultancy by Laura Tatham (£18.00)Publisher: Business Publications — 1964Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the edges, slightly tanned. A nice copy of a not-so-common title.Description: From the cover: “Are management consultants the answer to a businessman’s prayer? Or are they unprincipled rogues who, for an exorbitant fee, tell a company nothing it does not already know and saddle it with a lot of elaborate, unnecessary and expensive procedures?

To answer these extreme questions and many more between, Laura Tatham has obtained first-hand evidence from dozens of consultants and from as many clients, both satisfied and dissatisfied. This book is the result of her inquiries.

An impartial survey, The Efficiency Experts examines in detail what management consultants are, how they work and what they set out to accomplish. It suggests ways in which the businessman can make best use of consultants, and how he can assess whether or not a firm is likely to do a good job. A number of case histories describe both successful and unsuccessful consulting assignments.”
