The Imperial Russian Navy by Anthony J. Watts (£154.00)Publisher: London: Arms & Armour Press — 1990Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0853689121]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and the top corners of the boards with commensurate wear to the dust wrapper which is a little faded at the spine and onto the margins of the panels. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps; Tables;

From the cover: “Occupying a most important place in naval history, the fleets of the Imperial Russian Navy represent a major subject for study by serving officers, senior historians and naval buffs. Few published accounts have done justice to the topic, and none has offered the range of photographic illustration presented in this volume. The three centuries of naval development covered here demonstrate that its constant need to control its own ports and precious narrow exits to the oceans, as well as its pursuit of access to the Mediterranean, has caused the Russian Navy to be regularly in combat and at the forefront of advances in design, armament and strategy. Throughout the battles with its neighbours, the Crimean, Russo-Japanese conflicts, and the First World War, the Imperial Russian Navy deployed novel ships and weapons, including early use of torpedoes and of the submarine.

Anthony Watts has brought together an unprecedented collection of photographs and data to provide this new study of a most significant element of military history. Through his summary of Russian naval evolution, his compendium of technical information and the pictorial coverage, he has provided a most important contribution to naval literature, perhaps the most valuable volume on the subject for eighty years.”

Nicholas and Alexandra: The Family Albums by Prince Michael of Greece (£77.00)Publisher: Tauris Parke Books — 1996Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 1850434948]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper which is very slightly pulled at the head of the upper panel and a short, closed, tear to the foot of the same. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black and White Photographs;

From the cover: “In the summer of 1918, Tsar Nicholas II, his Tsarina Alexandra and their five children were executed by firing squad at Ekaterinburg. The unique and revealing photographs in this book illustrate the intimate family life of the last ruling Romanovs from 1896, shortly after the marriage of Nicholas and Alexandra, to the family’s house arrest at Tsarskoye Selo palace in 1917, shortly before their death. These photographs have been selected from thousands taken by the Tsarina and her five children, which were mounted in their own and the Tsar’s personal albums. The albums have until now remained hidden for over seventy years in government archives in Moscow.

Whilst researching his book Imperial Palaces of Russia in the Autumn of 1990, Prince Michael of Greece was puzzled by an invitation to view material in the government archives. Thirty thick, leather-bound volumes, embossed with the Imperial monogram, awaited him -the private photograph albums, which the curators wanted to show first to a relative of the Romanov family.

Through his selection of images from the family albums, the author here tells the story of the last Tsar, one of the saddest of twentieth-century politics. Nicholas II was a man both unprepared and ill equipped to rule the greatest empire in the world, and under the influence of Alexandra, the wife he so adored, he led Russia to disaster. But theirs was also an extraordinary love story, as the three hundred photographs in this book reveal. Away from the responsibilities of Empire, we see a close and loving family of simple tastes and great candour. The photographs clearly illustrate the personalities of Nicholas and Alexandra and of their four daughters -Olga, Tatiana, Maria and Anastasia — and beloved son and heir Alexis, who suffered from haemophilia and whose every move was carefully watched.

The family were keen, and sometimes talented, amateur photographers, who took their own cameras with them everywhere, be it on family picnics or on state occasions. The book thus illustrates a fascinating transition from the joy and relaxation of the early years, through the tension caused by the Tsarevich’s illness, to the stresses and anxiety of the First World War and the coming Revolution. These photographs provide a new perspective on the life of the Imperial family, and constitute an invaluable historical document.”

Chinese Pottery and Porcelain: From Prehistory to the Present by S. J. Vainker (£49.00)Publisher: London: British Museum Press — 1991Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0714114480]Condition: Very Good — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper with a vertical crease to the spint. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Jacket illustration: Porcelain dish decorated with a white dragon, cobalt blue glaze. Yuan dynasty, mid-14th century / White porcelain phoenix-head ewer, green-tinged glaze. 10th-11nth century AD. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs [80]; Colour Photographs [100]; Black & White Drawings; Maps;

From the cover: “Chinese Pottery and Porcelain is a comprehensive survey of the development of ceramics from the Neolithic period to the present day. Assessing the roles pottery has played in each dynasty throughout the history of China, the author also discusses its enormous impact on the ceramic industries of the rest of the world, where Chinese porcelain has been admired and collected for centuries.

From the earliest earthenwares to the exotic burial figures of the Tang, from the classic forms and subtle glazes of the Song to the famous porcelains created especially for export or imperial tastes, the book draws upon the extensive collections of the British Museum for lavish illustration.

The author considers the purposes for which the ceramics of each period were made, how their production was organised, and what effect local conditions might have had on their final forms. Incorporating contemporary commentaries, recent archaeological evidence from kiln sites and the most up-to-date scientific analysis, the book provides a valuable new account of China’s ceramic history.”

The Anatomy of Glory: Napoleon and His Guard a Study in Leadership by Henry Lachouque (£45.00)Publisher: Rhode Island: Brown Island Press; London: Lund Humphries — 1961Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper with the laminate lifting and fading at the same. Original postal box now a little worn. Light spotting throughout, heavier to the start and finish but the text and plates remain bright and tight notwithstanding. Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Plates; Black & White Plates; Maps; Fold-Out Maps [2]; Maps to the endpapers and blanks; Appendices [5];

From the cover: “THEY GRUMBLED… BUT THEY KEPT ON FOLLOWING HIM

Of all his works, the Imperial Guard was Napoleon’s finest creation. Moulded from the flotsam of the French Revolution, this elite corps swept through Europe for fifteen years behind its indomitable master, sharing in his brilliant victories and bearing the brunt of his epic defeats with unfaltering devotion.

This narrative, presented through the eyes of the participants in an incomparable drama of endurance, heroism, and fidelity, has been adapted for English readers from Commandant Lachouque’s monumental work Napoleon Et La Garde Imperiale, crowned by the French Academy in 1957.

The men of the Guard marched in triumph into Milan, Vienna, Berlin, Warsaw, Madrid, Moscow. Members of the new popular knighthood , they taught the Grande Armee how to fight. They were tortured in Spain, frozen in Russia, shaken with typhus in Germany. Ragged and famished, they won a dozen battles in 60 days against overwhelming odds in the campaign of France.

When their chief fell from power in 1814 they followed him into exile in Elba. Then they returned to reconquer France in 20 days without firing a shot.

The Guard died at Waterloo. It never surrendered.

Its story from birth to death is told here for the first time in English, accompanied by more than 300 illustrations (90 in colour) most of which are from contemporary documents, and a third of which have never before been published.

The Appendix includes extensive notes on the illustrations and biographical notes on the artists represented.”

The Handyman In The Home: In 3 Volumes by Edited by Arthur W. Judge (£40.00)Publisher: Caxton Publishing Company — 1956Binding: Hardback Condition: Very Good. Pages lightly age-tanned otherwise a pleasant set.Description: September Reprint of the 2nd Edition. [First: 1930] Illustrated with black and white photographs & diagrams. From the preface: “As its title indicates, this work has been prepared expressly for the practical handyman desirous of undertaking a wide variety of jobs connected with the home, garden, garage and small workshop, including not only the domestic repairs and renovations that become necessary from time to time but also useful improvements and additions to the home and its contents. The keen home dweller, with a knowledge of the use of the simple tools and materials described in these volumes, can not only tackle most household repairs and additions expeditiously, but also avoid a good deal of expense. Apart from these considerations, there is always the satisfaction associated with the completion of a job that would otherwise have meant calling in someone else for the purpose. In addition to the extensive range of household repairs, fittings, furniture and other relevant items dealt with in this work, there are also a number of sections, including those on homecrafts, hobbies, sports accessories, outdoor constructions, etc., which will be found both useful and profitable to the handyman and housewife. Since many of the articles in these volumes deal with woodwork repairs and new constructions, it was considered desirable to include a comprehensive section, written by a well-known expert in such matters, on the subject of carpentry and woodworking tools, so that the reader who is not very well acquainted with the use of the latter can improve both his knowledge and experience.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 7". Englishness and Empire 1939-1965 by Wendy Webster (£29.00)Publisher: Oxford University Press — 2005Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0199258600]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and the top corners of the boards with commensurate wear to the dust wrapper. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: From the cover: “Did loss of imperial power and the end of empire have any significant impact on metropolitan culture and identity after 1939? Within a burgeoning literature on national identity and Englishness, this is a question that has received surprisingly little attention.

Drawing on extensive research in the media archive, Wendy Webster’s highly readable study investigates popular narratives of nation, and the significance of empire and its legacies in shaping national identity after 1939. What were the tensions and uncertainties involved in defining a post-imperial nation? How did imperial legacies inform questions about who belonged in Britain and debates about race, immigration, and nationality? What did the Commonwealth mean? What was the significance of America to the making of a post-imperial nation? Focusing on stories told through prolific filmic and television imagery — the Second World War, the Coronation and Everest, colonial wars of the 1950s, Winston Churchill’s funeral — the book explores how far, and in what contexts and unexpected places, imperial identity and loss of imperial power resonated in popular narratives of nation.

A novel thematic focus on empire and Englishness in the post-1945 period makes this an important study for scholars and students of modern British history, empire and Commonwealth, decolonization, migration, gender, ethnicity, and race.”

War at Sea 1939-45 by John Hamilton (£24.50)Publisher: Poole: Blandford Press — 1986Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0713716606]Condition: Very Good — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and the top corners of the boards with commensurate wear to the dust wrapper. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: 2nd impression. [First Edition: 1986] Signed by the author on the half-title page — unverified and reflected as such in the lack of premium. Jacket illustration: War Horse of the Allied Navies at Sea; Illustrated by way of: Colour Plates; Diagrams; Maps; Tables;

From the cover: “John Hamilton is acknowledged as one of the world’s leading painters of the Second World War at sea. His paintings of the war in the Pacific are on exhibition in Washington DC while a permanent site for them is being established. The series portraying the conflict in the Atlantic and European waters forms an essential part of the Imperial War Museum’s collection on board HMS Belfast in the Pool of London.

War At Sea includes 176 of his superb paintings. Careful research and the assistance of a worldwide panel of advisers have ensured great accuracy both in the events depicted and in the equipment, vessels and aircraft involved.

Above all, the paintings give a clear and dramatic impression of war at sea. They are a tribute to the courage and endurance of the sailors and marines, soldiers and airmen of all nationalities, whether on the convoys to Russia, supporting the D-Day landings or launching an assault on the Pacific islands. They do not glorify war but are dedicated to the belief that to understand it is to understand also how urgent is the need to keep the peace.

The paintings are supported by a lively text with 43 maps. Together, they make WAR at SEA a unique contribution to the literature of the Second World War.”

Empires of the Indus: The Story of a River by Alice Albinia (£24.00)Publisher: London: John Murray — 2008Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 9780719560033]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Publishers review letter laid in. Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs; Maps [1];

From the cover: “One of the largest rivers in the world, the Indus rises in the Tibetan mountains, flows west across northern India and south through Pakistan. For millennia it has been worshipped as a god; for centuries used as a tool of imperial expansion; today it is the cement of Pakistan’s fractious union.

Five thousand years ago, a string of sophisticated cities grew and traded on its banks. In the ruins of these elaborate metropolises, Sanskrit-speaking nomads explored the river, extolling its virtues in Indias most ancient text, the Rig-Veda. During the past two thousand years a series of invaders — Alexander the Great, Afghan Sultans, the British Raj — made conquering the Indus valley their quixotic mission. For the people of the river, meanwhile, the Indus valley became a nodal point on the Silk Road, a centre of Sufi pilgrimage and the birthplace of Sikhism.

Empires of the Indus follows the river upstream and back in time, taking the reader on a voyage through two thousand miles of geography and more than five millennia of history redolent with contemporary importance.”

The Imperial Ming tombs: Text and Photos by Ann Paludan (£22.50)Publisher: Hong Kong University Press — 1981Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 962209029X]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the spine ends and corners with commensurate ruffling to the dustwrapper. Price Clipped. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Illustrated with photographs, in colour & black and white. From the cover: “In the Ming Valley just outside Peking, thirteen of the sixteen emperors of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) lie buried in one of the largest and most splendid Imperial mausolea in the world. Although almost every visitor to Peking is taken to see the Ming Tombs, surprisingly little has been written about them, and only two of the tombs are widely known to foreigners. This excellent contemporary guide to the tombs handsomely illustrated with the author’s own photographs, will awaken both scholars and tourists to the history and monuments of the entire valley.

The book opens with a brief history of the mausolea and accounts of the classical Chinese philosophy of death and geomancy and the traditional principles of Chinese architecture. In descriptions that are marked by a sensitivity not only to architectural and sculptural details but to total surroundings, the author then familiarizes us with each of the tombs and the emperors buried in them. Paludan’s view is an encompassing one, and her observations range from decorative ornament and drainage systems to birdlife and flora.

A map of the Ming Valley is included, along with charts for each tomb showing the current state of walls and buildings.”

Merchant Adventurers: The Voyage of Discovery That Transformed Tudor England by James Evans (£20.50)Publisher: London: Weidenfeld & Nicolson — 2103Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 9780297866886]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs; Maps [1];

From the cover: “In the spring of 1553 three ships sailed north-east from London into uncharted waters. The scale of their ambition was breathtaking. Drawing on the latest navigational science and the new spirit of enterprise and discovery sweeping the Tudor capital, they sought a northern passage to Asia and its riches.

The success of the expedition depended on its two leaders: Sir Hugh Willoughby, a brave gentleman soldier, and Richard Chancellor, a brilliant young scientist and practical man of the sea. When their ships became separated in a storm, each had to fend for himself. Their fates were sharply divided. One returned to England, to recount extraordinary tales of the imperial court of Tsar Ivan the Terrible. The tragic, mysterious story of the other two ships has to be pieced together through the surviving captain’s log book, after he and his crew became lost and trapped by the advancing Arctic winter.

This long neglected endeavour was one of the boldest in British history, and its impact was profound. Although the merchant adventurers failed to reach China as they had hoped, their achievements would lay the foundations for England’s expansion on a global stage. As James Evans’ vivid account shows, their voyage also makes for a gripping story of daring, discovery, tragedy and adventure.”

Venice: A Thousand Years of Culture and Civilization by Peter Lauritzen (£19.00)Publisher: Weidenfeld & Nicholson — 1978Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding. Previous owners' inscription to the half-title page with a pasted in gift-card facing. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs;

From the cover: “Venice is one of the world’s most magical and enchanting visual experiences. Other cities may be built on islands, linked by canals and have a rich cultural heritage, but there is only one Venice: her pervasive atmosphere, her peace and her serene beauty seem to set her apart not only from other cities but from the contemporary world.

In this book Peter Lauritzen recounts the rich history and evokes the extraordinary atmosphere of the thousand-year Republic which gave birth to so much beauty. Against the background of the Republic’s rise from a lagoon settlement to a great imperial power, her decay and her collapse in 1797, the author describes the works of the men of genius — artists such as Giovanni and Gentile Bellini, Canaletto, Rosalba Carriera, Giorgione, Tiepolo, Tintoretto and Titian; architects such as Longhena, Palladio, Sanmichele and Sansovino; musicians such as Vivaldi and Monteverdi — who together created one of the great cultures of the western world. The history of this supremely visual civilization is completed by photographs of the treasures which crowd this most beautiful and photogenic of cities.”

Mackinnon and East Africa 1878-1895: A Study in the New Imperialism by John S. Galbraith (£18.50)Publisher: Cambridge: At The University Press — 1972Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0521083443]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with fading to the spine. Price Clipped. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Maps;

From the cover: “In the 1870s Britain dominated the coast of east Africa by informal influence exerted from Zanzibar through the renowned consul-general, Sir John Kirk. This unchallenged position ended with the decision of Bismarck to back Carl Peters in his treaty-making activities and the mainland opposite Zanzibar was partitioned in 1886 into British and German spheres.

The British government was not willing to assume the responsibility and expense involved in administration of its area of influence and it assigned control to the Imperial British East Africa Company headed by William Mackinnon. The company’s life was short and inglorious. The government attributed its failure to the ineffectuality of Mackinnon and the Company’s directors blamed the government for using the Company to advance political objects and not providing it with proper support.

This book considers this episode in British Imperial History, the factors involved and Mackinnon’s part in it. The book considers the interaction of Mackinnon and the government from the 1870s when his first efforts in east Africa were frustrated by Salisbury to the liquidation of the Company in the mid-1890s.”

Prince Eugene of Savoy by Derek Mckay (£17.00)Publisher: London: Thames & Hudson — 1977Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0500870071]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Contains: Black & white plates; Maps;

From the cover: “The military genius of Prince Eugene of Savoy (1663-1736) has long been recognized: Napoleon counted him among the seven great generals of history. His important political career, however, is less well known, even though he was chief minister, of the Austrian ruler and German emperor, Charles VI. This work is the first scholarly study of Eugene to appear in English: it is based on a re-examination of Austrian primary sources and research into the English diplomatic records, and it takes full account of modern German scholarship.

An ambitious but penniless refugee from Louis XIV’s court, Eugene joined the Imperial army at a critical moment when the Turks were besieging Vienna. He stayed on to serve three Habsburgs — Leopold I, Joseph I and Charles VI — becoming their most successful general. His victories against the Turks, culminating in the capture of Belgrade (1717), made him a European hero. In the west he played a leading part, as soldier and diplomat, in resisting Louis XIV’s France. Although his greatest triumphs were in Italy, particularly the relief of Turin (1706), to English readers he is better known as the partner of Marlborough at Blenheim (1704) and in the struggle in Flanders from 1708. His appointment during the War of Spanish Succession as head of the war council and then of the Imperial conference, led to his pre-eminence under Charles VI.

Eugene’s career is of great political significance. He helped create the multi-national Austrian state, one built on the reconquest of Turkish Hungary and the acquisition of the Southern Netherlands and parts of Italy despite French competition. The expulsion of the Turks from Central Europe and the taming of France owed much to the man rejected by Louis XIV as unfit to serve in his own army.

The book also discusses the personal life and interests of this life-long bachelor prince, his building of palaces, his book and art collections, and his role as one of the most influential patrons of his age.”

The Rise and Fall of Imperial Japan, 1894-1945 by Edited by S. L. Mayer (£16.00)Publisher: Bison Books — 1985Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0861241428]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the edges, short closed and tape-reinforced to the spine ends. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Reprint. [First: 1984 thus, previously published as ‘The Japanese War Machine’ in 1976] Maps to the endpapers. Illustrated with photographs, in colour & black and white. From the cover: “In 1868, Japan emerged from feudalism and civil conflict as a comparatively undeveloped industrial state in an age of European imperialism in East Asia. Within a generation, Japan had risen to the ranks of the foremost industrial and military powers in the Western Pacific. A generation later, Japan had become the paramount power in East Asia, and her naval and air forces spread Japanese power across the Pacific. The formidable weapon built in the name of the Emperor swept across China and Manchuria; her air forces pummelled Pearl Harbor and Darwin; her armies marched to Singapore and the gates of India. Her navies seized some Aleutian islands and strafed the California coast. By 1942 the world had come to know the power of the most devastating force in the Pacific — the Japanese War Machine.

The force and power of the Japanese War Machine is told here by some of the world’s leading experts in guns, tanks, planes, and ships of World War II. The drama of Japan’s seizure of Manchuria, the take-over of the State by the Army, the invasion of China, the simultaneous attack on Malaya, Hawaii, the Philippines and the oil-rich Dutch East Indies is told in all the horror and shock the Japanese invader placed before Western eyes. The fall of Singapore and Hong Kong, the conquest of Burma and Indo-China took place within a hundred days. The flag of the Rising Sun ruled a maritime empire from the Russian border to the gates of Australia, from Burma to Midway.

But the strength of the Japanese War Machine depended on Japanese industrial power, which in the end, was no match for the United States and its Allies. The Japanese soldier, infused with the warrior code of Bushido fought hard and long in New Guinea’s jungles; as the struggle was brought closer to Japan’s home islands, the Japanese soldier fought on tenaciously in the Philippines and on Iwo Jima and Okinawa. The air forces began suicide missions, thekamikaze, which drove into Allied aircraft, heroically and fanatically.. .but all too little, too late. The nuclear holocaust, which ended World War II, left a ruined Japan and a wrecked Japanese War Machine.

THE RISE AND FALL OF IMPERIAL JAPAN is the tragic and noble history of a gallant people led into a misguided war. The millions who suffered in Asia and the Pacific in the wake of the Japanese War Machine bear silent tribute to its folly.”

Japanese Naval Aces and Fighter Units in World War II by Ikuhito Hata & Yasuho Izawa (£14.50)Publisher: Shrewsbury: Airlife Publishing Ltd. — 1990Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 1853101389]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Black & White Drawings; Tables; Maps to the endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “The Pacific War was an air war, yet, until now, Western readers have had little chance to learn about Japan’s naval fighter pilots and their World War II air groups. This English translation of a classic Japanese work finally lifts the cloak of anonymity that has hidden their identities from the West for so long. Within these pages the reader gains an intimate and unprecedented view of the men, their aircraft, and their victories and defeats.

Divided into three parts, the book opens with rare photos and brief descriptions of the principal Japanese naval aircraft. The second part offers concise histories of the air groups, including every carrier-and land-based fighter unit in the Imperial Navy — from the China Incident in the early 1930s to the end of the Pacific War in September 1945. Dates of organization and disbanding, key movements and action results, brief summaries of important battles, and anecdotes about leaders and aces are all provided. The third part captures Japan’s leading naval aces in photos and individual biographical sketches.

This translation — the only one available in English — is based on the revised and enlarged 1975 edition of Nihon Kaigun Sentoki-tai, the definitive work on the subject in Japan. To produce this unique record Ikuhiko Hata, an internationally known military historian, and his highly regarded researcher Yasuho Izawa spent years tracking down information and conducting interviews with surviving aces and the families of those killed in the war. Their Japanese perspective adds a significant new dimension to the annals of World War II.

Nearly 350 photographs of aces and aircraft — many new to this edition — supplement the text. Some 100 line-drawings of aircraft show unit markings and paint colours. To aid the Western reader this edition adds a section on Japanese naval terminology. Appendix tables chronicle naval fighter aces by record, pilots killed in action, pilots by training class, and major air battles. Indexes by name and unit and end maps of the entire Pacific theatre provide excellent references.”

Lost Subs: From the Hunley to the Kursk, the Greatest Submarines Ever Lost: and Found by Spencer Dunmore (£13.00)Publisher: Toronto: Da Capo Press — 2002Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0306811405]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. First blank has a vertical crease where it's been trapped under the upper board. Text complete, clean and tight otherwise. Description: Technical consultant, J. David Perkins. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs; Colour Drawings; Diagrams; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “In the summer of 2000, the fates of two very different submarines made headlines around the world. On August 8, the Confederate sub H. L. Hunley, sunk 136 years ago during the American Civil War, was raised at Charleston, South Carolina. Four days later, the Russian nuclear submarine Kursk exploded and plunged to the floor of the Barents Sea. Between the stories of these two lost submarines lies most of the history of men and warfare under the seas.

In gripping text and powerful images, Lost Subs chronicles the evolution of the submarine — from Robert Fulton’s early experiments to the famous German U-boats of both world wars; from Imperial Japan’s I-52 to the Cold War nuclear subs Thresher and Scorpion. Thanks to revolutionary new technology, divers and deep-sea submersibles are giving scientists unprecedented access to these lost subs, and shedding new light on both their creation and their destruction.

With state-of-the-art underwater photography, this definitive illustrated history vividly brings to life an amazing underwater museum. Fascinating cutaway diagrams and a wealth of archival photographs and paintings re-create these vessels in their prime and help answer many of the questions that have surrounded their sinkings. Here is a saga as current as today’s headlines, filled with mystery, drama and daring.”

The Romanovs: The Final Chapter by Robert K. Massie (£13.00)Publisher: Jonathan Cape — 1995Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0224041924]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Black & White Drawings;

From the cover: “In July 1991, nine skeletons were exhumed from a grave in Siberia, a few miles from the infamous cellar where the last tsar and his family were murdered seventy-three years before. Were these the Romanovs? The Romanovs: The Final Chapter provides the answer, going back to the horrifying moments of slaughter, revealing the guilt and cover-up by Lenin, then describing in dramatically suspenseful detail the efforts in post-Communist Russia to find the bodies and discover the truth.

Written almost as a detective thriller, the story includes a panoramic and colourful gallery of contemporary figures, from US Secretary of State James Baker, Russian president Boris Yeltsin and Lord Mountbatten, to fiercely antagonistic forensic experts and DNA scientists from Russia, America and Britain.

Because two skeletons — those of the tsar’s son and one of his daughters — were missing from the grave, all the tantalising tales of reappeared pretenders again loomed large. Was Anna Anderson, celebrated for more than sixty years in newspapers, books, films, ballets, really Grand Duchess Anastasia? The Romanovs: The Final Chapter answers this question, too.

Robert K. Massie’s classic Nicholas and Alexandra brought the Russian Imperial family magnificently to life and sold more than four million copies. It is natural that this master storyteller should be the one to write the final chapter to this historical tragedy.”

War, Ice and Piracy: The Remarkable Career of a Victorian Sailor: The Journals and Letters of Samuel Gurney Cresswell by Dominic Harrod (£13.00)Publisher: Chatham Publishing — 2000Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1861761384]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps;

From the cover: “The era of the Tax Britannica’ was anything but peaceful for many Royal Navy officers. But few saw as much active service as Samuel Gurney Cresswell (1827-1867). He joined the Navy at 14, serving in the Far East against Malay pirates, and then embarked on a famous four-year Arctic expedition during which he became one of the first men to navigate the long-sought North West Passage. After service in the Baltic Fleet in 1854 during the war with Russia, he obtained his first command and returned to the China station, where he was engaged in the imperial coercion that opened that country to the Western powers.

Throughout his action-packed service, he always found time to keep journals and to correspond with his family. He was an acute observer of the closed world of the Victorian navy, as well as the exotic climes he visited, and his lively first-hand accounts form the raw material for this book. He could also express his observations in highly-skilled drawings and watercolours, of such quality that he was summoned to the Palace to present his Arctic sketches to Queen Victoria, and many of these are reproduced here for the first time.

These journals and letters offer a remarkable insight into naval life of the time — especially the difficult transition from sail to steam propulsion -and provide an enthralling first-hand account of a far from ordinary officer’s career.”
