The Ballad of Sawney Bain by Harry Tait (£19.50)Publisher: Edinburgh: Polygon — 1990Binding: Paperback Signed by the Author.[ISBN: 0748660461]Condition: Very Good. Description: First in this, paperback, edition. Signed by the author on the title page — unverified and reflected as such in the lack of premium.

From the cover: “When the Black Book of accused witch, Agnes Douglas, falls into the hands of the minister the account she gives of her life with the cannibal, Sawney Bain and the warlock, Steenie Malecky, differs radically from the version given by the Church. The minister’s attempts to come to terms with the disquieting figure of Agnes and the true meaning of her book disturbs his own political and historical perspectives to such an extent that his religious convictions and finally his sanity are threatened.

Set in 17th century revolutionary Scotland, The Ballad of Sawney Bain sweeps from the Lowlands to the Highlands, detailing the lives of ordinary people caught in the hurricane of political change. Tail evokes a century in which the old and the new are in conflict more than at any time before. This was a time when many thought that the second coming of Christ was imminent, others that the devil himself was abroad in the land. Only a few realised that the old order had changed forever.”

Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Maps [1];

From the cover: “Sixty years ago, Europe lay at Hitler’s feet. Britain faced its darkest hour — outnumbered and friendless as the German army continued its advance. Defeat or capitulation seemed inevitable. But instead a legend was bom.

Taking its readers on a breath-taking journey from open lifeboats in Atlantic gales to the cockpits of burning fighter-planes, and through cities devastated by the Blitz, Finest Hour recreates the terror, the tragedy and the triumph of the Battle of Britain.

This powerful account of the events of 1940, is told through the voices, diaries, letters and memoirs of the men and women who lived, loved, fought and died during this terrible yet inspiring year. These searing personal testimonies, taken from over a hundred original interviews, are combined with a fresh and often controversial account of the elaborate political intrigues and betrayals of the period — the Royal Navy assault on the French fleet and America’s secret plans to cope with Britain’s defeat.

Finest Hour blends original historical research with the experiences of ordinary people in desperate times. Cutting through the nostalgic haze, this book enables readers to experience something of a time — still within common living memory — when a nation’s darkest hour became its finest.”

Glimpses of South Florida History by Stuart McIver (£18.00)Publisher: Florida Flair Books — 1988Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0961323698]Condition: Very Good+. Lightly rubbed at the tips of the wrappers. Description: First in this, paperback, edition. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs;

From the cover: “South Florida’s colourful history has been shaped by an incredible array of people, places and events. Stuart Mclver gives life to that unique history with an informative, insightful text accompanied by rare, “just the right” photographs.

Meet the heroes and the villains, the dreamers and the doers, the famous and the little known cast of characters that have left their imprint on the South Florida scene.

Mclver gives us a “different” view, often irreverent but never dull, of pioneers and presidents, generals and gangsters, socialites and sinners, tycoons and hermits.

Visit with Mclver, famous and forgotten homes, hotels and historic sites in Fort Lauderdale, Miami, the Palm Beaches, the Keys, Hollywood, Pompano Beach, the Everglades, Boca Raton, Davie, Fort Myers, Jupiter, Dania and Naples.

Relive the often cataclysmic events that are now becoming the stuff of myth and legend; the Spanish-American War, the Great Fort Lauderdale Fire of 1912, the Killer Hurricane of 1928, World War II, the Cuban Missile Crisis. Enjoy the flavor of a simpler time when president-elect Harding was “kidnapped” and bask in the nostalgia of the visit of the Beatles to South Florida.

Stuart Mclver’s insight into South Florida history, his lively writing style and his ability to track down facts and photos have delighted readers of his award-winning “The Way We Were” column in Sunshine magazine. Here, the best of these columns have been updated, and new photos have been added to give us Glimpses of South Florida History.”

[ISBN: 0850526663]Condition: Very Good+ - in Very Good+ DJ.Description: Alam Halfa to Tunis, 1942-43. Illustrated with B&W photographs. From the cover: “Whereas the early successes of the Axis powers in North Africa during the Second World War have been loudly praised, the far more conclusive victories of the British Eighth Army during the period August 1942 to May 1943 have received little credit. This informed yet very readable account examines the considerable problems faced and overcome by the commanders and men of Eighth Army. It describes their achievements and assesses their forgotten victories. New information is thrown on the highly significant Battle of Alam Halfa, the reasons for the escape of the bulk of Rommel’s defeated forces after El Alamein, the contribution of Ultra and the close co-operation of the Eighth Army and its all too often ignored partner, the Desert Air Force.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". Clipper Ship by Denys Burrows (£13.00)Publisher: Educational Press / Angus & Robertson — 1965Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Drawings;

From the cover: “This exciting adventure story of the nineteenth century is concerned with a ship — a tea-clipper on the Australia-China run; but even more so, it is concerned with the men and boys who sail in her.

The Dauntless is a dirty hulk when Captain Grey and his son, lan, first sight her, berthed listlessly at a wharf in Melbourne. The first member of the crew they meet as they go aboard — the Mate, Grogan, with his uncouth manners and jeering talk — doesn’t improve the picture.

Second Mate Jackson takes an instant dislike to “Apprentice Grey” and determines to make him break down, if he can. The Skipper refuses to interfere in case it looks like favouritism towards his son, and because the boy has to learn to stand on his own feet.

Captain Grey turns the Dauntless into a tight, well-run ship, but it takes a whole voyage and return to do it, a voyage full of adventure: man overboard in the Pacific, a kidnapping in China, and a typhoon on the trip back — not to mention the strange machinery crates found in the hold and the even stranger cargo discovered when the ship leaves Canton.”

Aircraft For the Many: A Detailed Survey of the RAF's Aircraft in 1944 by Michael J.F. Bowyer (£10.50)Publisher: Patrick Stephens — 1995Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1852604271]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Jacket illustration: RAF ground crew rapidly refuelling and rearming a spitfire in Normandy. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps; Tables;

From the cover: “That confident prediction came from General Dwight D. Eisenhower, Supreme Commander Allied Forces, on the eve of the D-Day landings in Normandy. He had every right to sound confident. If Operation Neptune was to succeed, air superiority was crucial, and a massive operation was under way. In the 24 hours of 6 June 1944 some 14,600 sorties were flown by Allied aircraft, involving around 40,000 aircrew, and the RAF were at the forefront of the action.

Operation Neptune was by far the most extensively and skilfully planned military operation in history, and involved unprecedented inter-service and international co-operation. But while many books have been written about the events of D-Day as a whole, Aircraft for the Many is the first to focus specifically on the RAF’s awesome contribution to the day’s events, the success of which launched the run-in to victory in Europe.

The result of years of meticulous research by the author, the book provides a squadron by squadron, aircraft by aircraft breakdown of the RAF’s operational involvement during the liberation of northern Europe. Every aspect is covered, from the mighty aerial armadas of bombers attacking coastal gun batteries to the lone Air-Sea Rescue Walrus amphibian plucking ditched airmen from the English Channel. Aircraft types are presented in their respective categories, their development and activities recorded in immense detail.”

Fighter! A Pictorial History of International Fighter Aircraft by Bill Gunston (£10.50)Publisher: Parragon — 1998Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0752526081]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dustwrapper. Dustwrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges. Previous owner’s inscription to the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Illustrated with photographs, in colour & black and white.

From the cover: “FIGHTERS ARE the thoroughbreds of the aviation world — they are agile, fast, lethally armed killers designed to seek out and challenge enemy aircraft and to win superiority of the skies. These are machines that are created to be deadly.

The first fighters appeared in World War I. In those days they looked very different: they were often biplanes, or even triplanes, and their flimsy structures were crafted out of wood, steel tube, bracing wires and fabric. Armed with machine-guns, they took part in the first aerial combats in the skies high above the trenches of France.

By World War II the technology had changed. These new fighters were streamlined monoplanes usually made of aluminium alloy. Engines of 150 horsepower had given way to power plants of ten times that power, and machine-guns were replaced by heavy shell-firing cannon. This conflict gave rise to some of the greats of fighter history — Spitfire, Mustang, Bf 109, Zero…

At the end of the war the jet engine swept away previous limitations on speed, opening the way for the design of new, aerodynamic fighter aircraft capable of flying faster than sound, while the development of guided-missile technology armed the fighter with a new generation of weapons.

Today’s fighters are packed with incredible electronic systems, and can fire lethal missiles at hostile aircraft beyond the horizon 200km (125 miles) away. Top-secret ‘stealth’ technology is now being developed to make the fighters of tomorrow virtually undetectable to enemy radar. This vividly-illustrated book traces the history of the world’s greatest fighters from World War I to the present day and provides a colourful and informative tribute to these fantastic aircraft..”

Politics In The USA by M. J. C. Vile (£7.00)Publisher: Hutchinson University Library — 1976Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0091275415]Condition: Good. An adequate reading copy only. Gently rubbed at the edges of the spine and wraps. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank.Description: New Edition. From the cover: “This is a fully up-dated edition of a book which first appeared in 1970, and rapidly established itself as the best introduction to American government and politics available. Written by one of the leading British scholars of American politics, the book covers all the essential aspects of American government and politics, while the statistical and historical appendices, including the complete US Constitution, provide the basic reference materials required by students of the subject. In this edition, Professor Vile has revised the entire text wherever necessary, charting the domestic implications of the world-wide retreat of American influence and the important legislative and government changes. In particular, however, the chapter on Presidential politics has been completely rewritten in the light of the Watergate affair and provides a dispassionate assessment of that incredible episode in American history. The final chapter, ‘American Politics Today’, has also been thoroughly revised and considers the state of the nation as the United States emerges from its most traumatic decade since the Civil War.”Notes: Size: C Format (8½" x 5¼"). 318 pages.
