The Canals of South and South East England by Charles Hadfield (£28.00)Publisher: Newton Abbot: David & Charles — 1969Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper with a very small nick to the foot of the upper panel. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Appendices [2]; Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Maps; Tables;

From the cover: “Charles Hadfield’s The Canals of Southern England, published in 1955, has been out of print for some time. Since it was written, new records have been found and specialised studies made of several waterways within the area covered. It has therefore been replaced by two new volumes, The Canals of South West England already published, and this present book.

The Canals of South and South East England tells the story of all inland waterways south of the Thames and of Gloucester, and east of a line drawn roughly from Bristol to Christchurch. These include major canals like the Thames & Severn, Gloucester & Berkeley and Kennet & Avon, the Thames navigation itself, the many smaller canals and navigable rivers in the London area, Kent, Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire, and interesting schemes that came to nothing.

The old text has been thoroughly revised, and there is also much completely new information, especially on waterways about which separate books have not yet been written: the Stroudwater, Wilts and Berks, Grand Surrey, Croydon, Thames & Medway, Medway, Kentish Stour, and those of Hampshire.”

Jane Austen: A Life by Claire Tomalin (£14.00)Publisher: Viking — 1997Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0670865281]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Price Clipped. Tiny puncture to the upper panel at the margin with the spine. Leans slightly. Couple of small marks to the leading edge of the text block. Text bright and tight.Description: 7th printing. Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the flap: “The six great novels of Jane Austen picture a world of civility, reassuring stability and continuity. It is a world she knew because it was the world she herself inhabited. Or so generations of admiring readers have supposed. The Jane Austen who emerges from Claire Tomalin’s biography is a slightly different figure, however — a woman who lived on the edges of the society she described, looking in at it from the outside. The family into which she was born was neither landowning nor prosperous. They were meritocrats, struggling to get ahead in the competitive and money-driven society of England under George III. From her study of family papers, Tomalin is able to paint a rich, tragic-comic picture of the Austen clan, their ambitions, their matrimonial alliances and their exotic connections with India and France.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". Hampshire: The County in Colour by Ian Parker & Barry Shurlock (£13.00)Publisher: Countryside — 2004Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1853068810]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper.Description: Illustrated with colour photographs. From the cover: “Hampshire is a county of contrasting and beautiful countryside — sweeping green downs to the north, the lazy river valleys of the Itchen and the Test in the centre, and the busy coast and sea in the south.

It is a fine county to explore and enjoy. From the yachting centre of Lymington, the naval splendour of Portsmouth harbour, the wealth of pretty villages like Selborne and Wherwell, and the colourful narrow boats along the Basingstoke Canal to family attractions such as Marwell Zoo and Alresford’s Watercress Line steam centre, there is so much to see and to admire.

Hampshire also contains more than its fair share of historic buildings including the Roman castle at Portchester, Winchester Cathedral, and the enchanting Breamore House.

In this book, landscape photographer lan Parker has imaginatively captured the true essence of the county, with a collection of inspirational images that are complemented by an informative and affectionate text by well-known, local author, Barry Shurlock. Together they have successfully portrayed the beauty of Hampshire in all its moods and colours.”

He is a household name, an eccentric, and one of the most loved and respected characters in world cricket. Here at last is his autobiography. The most famous cricket umpire of them all, Dickie has done that difficult job more skilfully than anyone else. Moreover he has done it in his idiosyncratic style and with the infectious humour which has endeared him to millions throughout the world, transcending his sport. Fiercely proud of his background as a Yorkshire miner’s son, his story follows his youth in Barnsley, his early days as a cricketer, through to his career as an umpire and his experiences of the international scene, all told with total honesty by this very private person. Throughout his life he has courted both controversy and comedy. This book is a mixture of forthright views on the game and those involved in it, compelling accounts of what it is like behind the scenes in cricket at the highest level, and hilarious stories, for which Dickie is so well known.”Notes: Foreword or introduction by Michael Parkinson. Watchers by the Pool: The Cats of Mas des Chats by Margaret Reinhold (£11.50)Publisher: Souvenir Press — 1993Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0285631217]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and top corners with commensurate ruffling to the dust wrapper. Text complete, clean and tight. A nice copy.Description: Illustrated with photographs, in colour & black and white. From the cover: “The old stone farmhouse was surrounded by fields, vineyards and olive groves, protected from the wind by rows of cypress trees. Its cool green garden was a riot of roses, wisteria and jasmine, and in the far distance lay a line of blue hills. In the warm sunshine and the brilliant light that is peculiar to Provence, it seemed like Paradise on earth. Not long after moving there from Hampshire with her two English cats, Margaret Reinhold began to discover the sadder side of her idyllic new life. The local peasant farmers, struggling to make a hard-won livelihood from the dry soil, beset by sudden, destructive rainstorms, summer outbreaks of fire and the harsh breath of the mistral, had little room for sentiment where their animals were concerned. Day after day Mas des Chats was besieged by pathetic, starving cats and even dogs, lost, abandoned and often ill, all hoping desperately for food. Nervous and half-wild, they wolfed the food put out for them and left — except for a few, braver and more determined, who came into the house and gradually made themselves part of the family. The community of two cats became ten, plus Caramel the dog. This warm, beautiful book is the story of those ten, highly individual cats: bossy, snobbish Rosie, the unique and glorious Bruno, sweet Maman with her daughter Baby, black, golden-eyed Nero, courageous Helene with her elegant son Oedipus, Monsieur le Gris, a timid barrel of a cat, Lily the loner and shy, adventurous little Katy. Together they brought a new intensity to Mas das Chats as they shared the author’s life and wormed their way irrevocably into her heart.”Notes: Illustrated by William Goody (Photos.). Size: 8¾" x 7". [ISBN: 0002570793]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Pages lightly age-tanned.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “Queen Elizabeth is far and away the most experienced figure in British public lire. The most famous woman in the world, she is also its most private. Now, in her fiftieth year on the throne, Brian Hoey — one of our best-informed royal chroniclers — takes a searching look at the ups and downs of Her Majesty’s long reign, and highlights the important difference in people’s attitudes towards the Queen personally and the monarchy in general. The author has had unrivalled access to past and present members of the royal staff and household, as well as to ex-Heads of State, statesmen, politicians and personal friends of the Queen. Nothing they have said is ‘off the record’. The result is a lively, authoritative and revealing portrait of the Queen’s life and work seen largely through the eyes of those who’ve known her and worked with her over the course of half a century.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". My Autobiography by Dickie Bird & Keith Lodge (£10.50)Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton — 1997Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0340684577]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and top corners with commensurate ruffling to the dust wrapper. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Later printing. Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “Dickie Bird’s retirement was an international event shown on millions of TV screens and covered in newspapers throughout the world. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with a nick at the head of the spine. Price Clipped. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Slight tanning to the blanks. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: From the cover: “Letters From Longstock are descriptions of how an elderly gentleman has settled down in retirement in a small Hampshire village.

They tell of the various things he notices, of the successes and failures and excitements that he and his wife experience in making a new garden and new friends and, in fact’ in many ways, a new life. They tell of past experiences and adventures and of characters he has encountered in the course of a fairly active and varied life. They deal, to quite a large extent, with gardening of an inexpert kind and with wild life, but they are not for the knowledgeable horticulturist or naturalist or, for that matter, with any other very clever person, though they may amuse some.

They may also comfort those about to retire by showing them that there is still a great deal of enjoyment and fun to be had out of life and as they can be dipped into at will they should make a useful bedside book for guests and others and send some happily off to sleep. They are neither fiction nor autobiography but as the author has been heard to remark, all the characters mentioned are very fortunately real.”

My New Forest Home by Irene Soper (£9.50)Publisher: Ex Libris Press — 1996Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0948578815]Condition: Very Good. Description: First in this, paperback, edition. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Drawings; Maps;

From the cover: “Irene Soper and her husband Arthur have lived in the New Forest for many years, during which time they have explored all aspects of this very special corner of southern England.

Here is the story of the renovation of an ancient forester’s cabin in their garden to provide themselves with an artists’ studio, a cabin once occupied by the herbalist and writer, Juliette de Bairacli-Levy. She is one of a host of colourful characters, some native and others drawn by the magical atmosphere of the Forest, to whom the reader is introduced in these pages.

The author tells of her encounters with the Forest’s abundant wildlife, among them ponies, donkeys, deer, badgers, birds and snakes, and presents a full account of the area’s traditional products, all of which spring from the natural environment.

Irene Soper’s writing reflects a spirit of tranquillity and timelessness embodied by the Forest itself and is a lasting testament of one who knows and loves this memorable landscape.”

The Barry Richards Story by Barry Richards (£9.50)Publisher: Readers Union — 1978Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with some soiling to the lower panel. Pages very gently age-tanned.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “One of the world’s outstanding batsmen — certainly the greatest South Africa has produced — describes his early years in Durban, the experiences and family background which formed him as a man and a player, and his dazzling and sometimes turbulent career since he first made his mark as a schoolboy, captaining the first ever South African Schoolboys’ XI to tour England in 1963. He and his vice-captain Mike Procter subsequently made an impact on English county cricket, and Barry Richards gives an account of his career with Hampshire both on and off the field, with forthright views on the county game. He is equally forthright about the structure of his homeland, for which he played in one outstandingly successful Test series before South Africa was banned from international cricket — on which he also has clear-cut opinions.

Though clearly of outstanding natural ability, Richards is far from being a purely instinctive player, and some of the most interesting passages in his book concern the strategy and tactics of the game, the varying attitudes to it from country to country, including absorbing accounts of many memorable games — not least that in which he scored 356 at Perth.

This book is not just for cricket lovers, but for all concerned with the place of sport in contemporary society, domestic and international, at a time when conventional attitudes to the place of politics and commerce are seen to be no longer adequate.”

The English Country Inn by Garry Hogg (£9.50)Publisher: B. T. Batsford — 1974Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0713428554]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dustwrapper. Price Clipped. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and top corners with commensurate ruffling to the dustwrapper.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “A country inn could have been a haunt of highwaymen, whether in Wiltshire or Essex; could have been notorious for cock-fighting, whether in Hertfordshire or Yorkshire; could have been frequented by smugglers, whether in Devon or Kent; could have sheltered fleeing kings or pretenders, whether in Hampshire or Dorset; could have been originally the guest house of an abbey, whether in Berkshire or Sussex. But, be it half-timbered or tile-hung, of granite or of limestone, the inn is as necessary a feature of the rural scene as the parish church or the village green.

Carry Hogg set out to capture the essentials of this unique institution. From thousands of inns he picked out the very best (some two hundred in all) and revisited every one of them especially for this book. Conversations with landlords and interested customers enhanced his fascinating and informative account of their history, their beauties, their curiosities and associations. That the inns are particularly photogenic is proved by the 46 admirable photographs, most of which were taken expressly to appear here.”

The Pilgrims' Way: From Winchester To Canterbury by Sean Jennett (£9.50)Publisher: Cassell — 1971Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 030493755X]Condition: Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper lightly sunned at the spine, too short for the book which has resulted in fading to the top edge of the boards and head of the spine. First blank excised otherwise tight and bright.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs and a fold-out map to the start of the index. From the cover: “Across the southern flank of the North Downs, through the lovely countryside of Hampshire, Surrey and Kent, runs a trackway of immense antiquity. It links two of Britain’s fairest cities, Winchester and Canterbury, both steeped in historical associations. But the Way is older than either and to call it, as everyone does, the Pilgrim’s Way is in one sense a misnomer, for it was used by Neolithic and Bronze Age travellers thousands of years before Christianity came to Britain. Its greatest days of fame, however, were the middle ages when pilgrims set out from the shrine of St Swithun in Winchester cathedral and trod the long miles east to that of St Thomas Becket at Canterbury. At first the pilgrimage was a penance carried out with great reverence, but later, as Chaucer shows us, it appeared to become the medieval equivalent of a twentieth-century holiday coach tour.

Sean Jennett, who has walked every mile of the Way, has divided his book into two parts. First he discusses the geographical factors determining the line of the track and guiding the feet of the earliest travellers along the slopes of the downs where the going was good. Then he places the Way in its historical perspective; retelling the ever-fascinating story of Becket and his struggle with Henry II and describing the churches and monastic foundations, the villages and towns which lie along the pilgrims’ path.

In the second part the author traces the Way mile by mile. Its actual route is sometimes difficult to locate and in places he suggests alternative paths. This is an eminently practical companion, with the author’s own striking photographs, and contains useful hints on the conditions likely to be encountered at different times of the year, on photography, on the approach roads, bus routes, accommodation.”

The Road to Verdun: France, Nationalism and the First World War by Ian Ousby (£9.50)Publisher: Jonathan Cape — 2002Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0224059904]Condition: Very Good. Gently rubbed at the edges of the spine and wraps. Owner's address sticker to the reverse of upper wrap. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: First in this, paperback, edition. Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “Verdun was the largest, the longest and the bloodiest battle between the French and Germans in the First World War, lasting from February 1916 until the end of the year and claiming more than 700,000 casualties. For the French in particular, it was always more than just a battle, being rather (in Paul Valery’s words) ‘a complete war in itself, inserted in the Great War’. Ian Ousby’s new book gives a vivid, insightful account of the generals’ planning and the troops’ suffering. At the same time it goes beyond the narrow horizons of military history by locating the experience of Verdun in how the French had thought about themselves, their nation and their relations with their eastern neighbour since the debacle of the Franco-Prussian War. Verdun emerges as the mid-point in the cycle of Franco-German hostility, carrying both the burden of history and - if only by the presence on the battlefield of men like Petain and de Gaulle, France’s two leaders in the next war — the seeds of the future.”Notes: Size: Trade Paperback (9¼" x 6"). 304 pages. Verdun 1916 by Malcolm Brown (£9.50)Publisher: Arcadia — 2000Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0752417894]Condition: Near Fine.Description: First in this, paperback, edition. Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “1916 was a year of killing. The British remember the Somme, but earlier in the year the heart of the French army was ripped out by the Germans at Verdun. The garrison city in north-eastern France was the focus of a massive German attack; the French fought back ferociously, leading to a battle that would claim hundreds of thousands of lives and permanently scar the French psyche. To this day one can visit the site of ghost villages uninhabited since, but still cherished like shrines. Memories of Verdun would greatly influence military and political thinking for decades to come as both sides came away with memories of bravery, futility and horror. Malcolm Brown has produced a vivid new history of this epic clash — drawing on original illustrations and eyewitness accounts he has captured the spirit of a battle that defines the hell of warfare on the Western Front.”Notes: Size: 9¾" x 6¾". 192 pages. Smuggling in Hampshire and Dorset 1700-1850 by Geoffrey Morley (£7.50)Publisher: Countryside — 1984Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0905392248]Condition: Good. A pleasant enough reading copy. Gently rubbed at the edges of the spine and wraps. Small address lable to the reverse of the upper wrap.Description: Reprint. [First: 1983, Thus] Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “Many factors combined to make the coasts of Hampshire and Dorset ideal for smuggling. The prevailing South Westerly winds enabled a fast sea passage from the big contraband warehouses less than 100 miles away across the Channel. The numerous, sandy beaches were safe places to land cargo, unseen by a poorly staffed and financed Revenue Service, and there were quiet, fast tracks along which to transport the goods inland to towns and cities where a sympathetic and eager market awaited it. During its heyday, smuggling embraced a huge range of dutiable luxuries including lace, silks, coffee, soap and playing cards as well as less orthodox cargo such as golden guineas and spies. It employed the young and old, men and women, aristocrats and labourers. It was a big industry — it is estimated that the Battle of Mudeford in 1784, which the smugglers won, allowed them to keep a shipment of 120,000 gallons of spirits and between thirty and forty tons of tea. Geoffrey Morley’s book describes the industry in detail along each section of the coast, explaining the methods used and introducing the legendary characters who were involved, from Abraham Pike, Chief Riding Officer for Christchurch to Lovey Warne, whose feminine charms enabled quantities of contraband to pass under the eyes of the Revenue Officers. It is a fascinating study of a trade which even today is remembered with awe tinged with more than a little affection.”Notes: Size: 8¼" x 5¾". 220 pages. Verdun 1916 by Malcolm Brown (£7.50)Publisher: Tempus — 2003Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0752425994]Condition: Near Fine.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “1916 was a year of killing. The epic ten-month battle of Verdun claimed 750,000 German and French lives. The British remember the Somme but earlier in the year the heart of the French army was ripped out by the Germans at Verdun. The garrison city in north-eastern France was the focus of a massive German attack; the French fought back ferociously, leading to a battle that would permanently scar the French psyche. Using original French sources and eye-witness accounts from both sides, Malcolm Brown brings the horror of Verdun into vivid focus.”Notes: Size: B Format (7¾" x 5¼"). 286 pages. My Autobiography by Dickie Bird (£6.50)Publisher: Coronet — 1999Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0340684585]Condition: Very Good. Pages very gently age-tanned.Description: Updated Edition. Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “Dickie Bird’s retirement was an international event shown on millions of TV screens and covered in newspapers throughout the world.
