The Wirral by Alan Brack (£20.50)Publisher: Phillimore & Co. — 1988Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0850336791]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the head of the spine. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Reprint with amendments. [First Edition: 1980] Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the flap: “The Wirral was already an old-established administrative unit at the time of Domesday Book. This book is concerned with all those aspects of the Wirral, whether of history, architecture or landscape, that give the peninsula its individuality. Well known as a writer on the locality, Alan Brack starts with the immense advantage of having lived there nearly all his life. His book is at once scholarly, readable and entertaining. He has studiously avoided the highly romanticised view which has persisted in other accounts of the area and his opening chapter, ‘A Place Apart’, sets the tone for the whole book. There are sections on Birkenhead and Wallasey and on Bebington and Bromborough. An authoritative account of the establishment of Ellesmere Port is followed by a chapter on the Urbanised Districts of Hoylake, Neston and Heswall, on the Urbanised, Unexpected and Purpose-built villages, on the open spaces and on crossing the Mersey. The description of Port Sunlight, with its vignette of Lord Leverhulme, is especially well-informed. Human interest relieves a generally topographical approach through the appearance in the local context of the many notable men and women who have been associated with the Wirral.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". Unimagined: A Muslim Boy Meets the West by Imran Ahmad (£11.50)Publisher: Aurum Press — 2007Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1845132289]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: From the cover: “Part White Teeth, part Adrian Mole, Unimagined is the captivating memoir of a Muslim boy born in Pakistan, who moves to London aged one and grows up torn between his Islamic identity and his desire to embrace the West. The endearing narrator recalls his childhood in a series of vivid snapshots: outrage as deserved victory is snatched away from him in the Karachi Bonnie Baby contest; bitterness as he is tricked out of his collection of Tarzan bubble-gum cards by junior con artists; the heady taste of success in the Metropolitan Police schools quiz; joy at passing the entrance exam to the local grammar school; uncertainty as he seeks to become a doctor (like all good Asian boys); and shock at experiencing racist abuse from pupils, neighbours and strangers. Imran’s response is a determined quest to become the quintessential English gentleman: tie perfectly knotted, shirt pristinely ironed, hair neatly combed. Like most boys, he has a parallel obsession with cars and girls: he yearns to emulate his hero, Simon Templar in The Saint, by driving off into the distance in a Jaguar XJS and encountering danger, adventure — and a vivacious young woman (preferably brunette, but any kind considered)..”Notes: Size: 8" x 5¼". Almost Like a Whale: The Origin of Species Updated by Steve Jones (£9.50)Publisher: Black Swan — 2001Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 055299958X]Condition: Very Good. Upper wrapper slighty curled. Description: From the cover: “Steve Jones takes on the challenge of going back to the book of the millennium, Charles Darwin’s The Origin of Species. Before The Origin, biology was a set of unconnected facts. Darwin made it into a science, linked by the theory of evolution, the grammar of the living world. It reveals ties between cancer and the genetics of fish, between brewing and inherited disease, between the sex lives of crocodiles and the politics of Brazil. Darwin used the biology of the nineteenth century to prove his case. Now, that science has been revolutionized and his case can be reargued using the twentieth century’s astonishing advances. From AIDS to dinosaurs, from conservation to cloned sheep, bursting with anecdotes, jokes and irresistible facts, Almost lLike a Whale is a popular account of the science that makes biology make sense. It will catch the millennial mood and tell all those for whom Darwin is merely a familiar name what he really meant. It exposes the Darwinian delusions which try (and fail) to explain human behaviour in evolutionary terms, and, while giving an up-to-date account of our own past, shows how humans are the first species to step beyond the constraints of biology.”Notes: Size: B Format (7¾" x 5¼"). 499 pages. New Testament Greek by D. F. Hudson (£9.50)Publisher: The English Universities Press — 1960Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0340056711]Condition: Very Good — in Poor Dust Wrapper. Edges of the dust wrapper somewhat frayed at the top edge with untidy tears to the head of both panels. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Number 692 in the series.

From the cover: “Some years ago an Englishman who was teaching New Testament Greek to Indian students and a Norwegian who was teaching it to Chinese students compared notes about method, and summed up the conversation in two words — “Bully them!” This book may be said to have arisen from that conversation, since there is clearly something wrong when keen young men who have a vocation for the Christian ministry have to be bullied into an essential part of the preparation for it. Two things are obvious about the standard grammars of New Testament Greek — first that they are dull, and secondly that the English is usually “biblical”. Even in Britain it is now realised that the language of the Authorised or Revised Versions is not understood by the modern pagan, and to Indian students it is almost a new language which they have to learn as a step to Greek. Further, it creates a subconscious impression that the language of the New Testament was archaic, which is the exact opposite of the truth. The present writer made a few experiments with exercises in modern English, but these were not very successful, and it was the discovery of the companion book in this series, Teach Yourself Greek which inspired the method adopted in this book.”

Playing Days by Tony Lewis (£9.50)Publisher: Stanley Paul — 1985Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0091622808]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Price Clipped. Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the edges.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “A cricket autobiography that reads like a novel is a rare treat, but then, as Tony Lewis says, he fluttered into the golden web of Neville Cardus at the age of twelve and never tried to escape. His Playing Days have been unusual, to say the least. A double Cambridge Blue thinking of a future as a professional violinist, he bequeathed his front teeth to a rugby pitch at nineteen, and rose through the ranks of cricket to captain Glamorgan and England with romantic optimism. He had played for his county as a schoolboy prodigy — Welsh, fiercely determined and out first ball — and he maintained his independence as an amateur and a gentleman by his skills as a freelance writer and broadcaster. Top scorer in the country in 1966, Tony Lewis nevertheless viewed the game from above and below, suffering dismal slumps and tormented by knee injuries, a thinking young man surrounded by gods. Here are his memories of Glamorgan: of leading them to their Championship triumph in 1969, and of the black day when Roger Davis, felled at short square leg, lay apparently lifeless on the pitch. Memories of skippering the MCC as a novitiate in his new England sweater in India and Pakistan in 1972/3: of the shocking poverty, the blinding sun, the dodgy umpiring and the death threat by the Black September movement just months after the Munich Olympics. Memories of music, of Wales, the RAF, playing for the Lord’s Taverners and I Zingari, and the treasured characters of the game, all vividly captured with the writer’s eye for feeling and detail. Like the sight of A. R. Lewis winding up to take 3 for 18 at Neath with his little leg spinners, Playing Days will delight cricket-lovers everywhere with its poetic charm.”Notes: Size: 8¾" x 5¾". It is not only for civil servants that clarity of expression is important. It is equally vital in dictating a business letter, preparing a minute, writing an advertisement, or reporting a crime.
