China At War by Freda Utley (£249.00)Publisher: London: Faber & Faber — 1939Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with a little loss, heavy damp-marking to the reverse showing slightly at the panels. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Endpapers and blanks a little grubby. Previous owners' gift inscription to the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned. Map to the rear slightly mis-folded. Description: Illustrated by way of: Frontispiece; Black & White Photographs; Fold-Out Maps [1];

From the cover: “Freda Utley, who has just returned from the seat of war in the Far East, gives us in this book a vivid description of the Chinese war, as she has seen it from the Chinese side, backed by a brilliant expose of the Chinese political situation. One of the very few British newspaper correspondents in the war zone (she represented the News Chronicle), the only Englishwoman to visit the Yangtze fronts, and a world-renowned authority on Far Eastern matters, Miss Utley is quite exceptionally well informed, as readers of her last book, Japan’s Feet of Clay, know. A trained and accurate observer, she allows her sympathy with the Chinese cause to warm but not to warp the truth. A naturally straightforward writer, she makes her story easy to read, deeply interesting, and therefore deeply moving.”

TSR-2: Phoenix or Folly? by Frank Barnett-Jones (£104.00)Publisher: GMS Enterprises — 1994Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 187038427X]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and the top corners of the boards with commensurate wear to the dust wrapper. Leans slightly. Text complete, clean and tight. A nice copy of an umcommon title in any edition. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Diagrams;

From the cover: “In the late 1950’s the Government of the day embarked on a major initiative which was to change forever the basic structure of Britain’s Aviation Industry. At the same time the Royal Air Force had an urgent requirement for a new strike aircraft. From this emerged one of the most far-reaching military aviation programmes ever embarked upon by a British government up to that time. The subsequent arguments and debates for and against were voiced in all sections of the media, attracting both public attention and condemnation.

The new industry emerged from the ashes of the old as the British Aircraft Corporation and the Hawker Siddeley Group, however, the project that was formulated as the very incentive in bringing about the change was firstly condemned and then literally scrapped by a new, incoming government. It was always indicated that the project was cancelled because of its cost, but has this been used merely to disguise an underlying, alternative reason?

This book attempts to describe the aircraft, its systems and intended roles. At the same time it also traces the origins of the Operational Requirement and tries to piece together for the first time the controversial issues and personalities that conspired together to bring about the tragic downfall of the TSR-2.”

Jet: The Story Of A Pioneer by Sir Frank Whittle (£88.00)Publisher: Frederick Muller — 1953Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good — in Poor Dust Wrapper. Edges of the dust wrapper somewhat frayed, rubbed at the leading edge of the flaps and loss to the tail of the spine. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding. Edges of the textblock heavily spotted. One leaf of the contents section is mis-trimmed at the top corner and stands proud of the block. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned. A decent copy, uncommon in the first edition. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs;

From the cover: “At the Royal Air Force Station at Cranwell in Lincolnshire on the evening of the I5th May, 1941, an aeroplane of unusual type was seen to taxi to the eastern end of the runway and then, after a run of 600 yards, to rise gracefully into the air for a flight of seventeen minutes. To the distant observers one very strange thing about this beautiful little aeroplane was that it had a very short undercarriage, but an even stranger thing was that it had no propeller. The aeroplane was the Gloster/Whittle E. 28/39 — the world’s first successful jet aeroplane — making its first flight.

This book is primarily the story behind that historic event. Frank Whittle, who eleven years earlier, at the age of 22, had applied for his patent for a turbo-jet engine, here sets on record with characteristic modesty his own courageous pioneer work and that of the small company, Power Jets Ltd. , which he helped to form in March 1936 to develop the engine. The dreams of his boyhood and the plans of his youth were brought to fruition in an invention that not only revolutionised military aircraft but set Britain ahead of the world in Civil Aviation, bringing the inventor a knighthood and an award of £100,000 at the age of only forty-one.

In non-technical language the author describes, for the first time, his hard and often bitter struggle with engineering problems, with financial difficulties and with the frustrations arising out of official policy. He also reveals the epic story of Power Jets’ successful battle against severe engineering difficulties, in spite of serious handicaps and of its losing battle against a combination of powerful forces in Government and Industry.”

The Fleet in the First World War Volume 1: Operations of the Russian Fleet by Edited by N. B. Pavlovich (£86.00)Publisher: New Delhi, Bombay, Calcutta & New York: Amerind Publishing Co. Pvt. Ltd. — 1979Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the spine ends and corners with commensurate wear to the dust wrapper which is a little dulled at the panels and faded at the spine. Boards and spine dulled. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Publishing date unstated, dated from references. Translation of Flot v Pervoi Mirovoi Voine published by Voennoe Izdatel’stvo, Ministry of Defence, USSR, Moscow, 1964. Illustrated by way of: Maps; Tables; Fold-Out Maps; Plans;

From the cover: “Among the many works on the First World War there has been no comprehensive account of the Russian navy’s part in that epic clash of the great powers. This gap is now filled by the present volume, which takes its place as the authoritative record of the Russian fleet’s day-by-day contribution to the war at sea from 1914 through 1917, when the revolutionary Bolshevik government took Russia out of what it saw as a purely imperialistic confrontation.

The story of the tortuously slow growth of the tsarist navy is told against the background of war preparations by Germany, France and England. We learn that through the vision and persistence of a few leaders Russia’s posture both on land, at sea and in the air at the outbreak of the war could inspire a measure of confidence.

The deeds of the Russian navy are recounted on the basis of the three theatres where it operated: the Baltic Sea, the Black Sea and the White Sea and adjoining coastal waters. The sections under these three heads give a year-by-year account of the fighting at sea against the background of the general progress of hostilities, particularly on the land front. The account concludes with the overthrow of the Tsar, the brief transition of Bolshevik rule, and the upheaval these developments produced in the Russian navy, which played a not inconsiderable part in hastening the process.”

Nicholas and Alexandra: The Family Albums by Prince Michael of Greece (£77.00)Publisher: Tauris Parke Books — 1996Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 1850434948]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper which is very slightly pulled at the head of the upper panel and a short, closed, tear to the foot of the same. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black and White Photographs;

From the cover: “In the summer of 1918, Tsar Nicholas II, his Tsarina Alexandra and their five children were executed by firing squad at Ekaterinburg. The unique and revealing photographs in this book illustrate the intimate family life of the last ruling Romanovs from 1896, shortly after the marriage of Nicholas and Alexandra, to the family’s house arrest at Tsarskoye Selo palace in 1917, shortly before their death. These photographs have been selected from thousands taken by the Tsarina and her five children, which were mounted in their own and the Tsar’s personal albums. The albums have until now remained hidden for over seventy years in government archives in Moscow.

Whilst researching his book Imperial Palaces of Russia in the Autumn of 1990, Prince Michael of Greece was puzzled by an invitation to view material in the government archives. Thirty thick, leather-bound volumes, embossed with the Imperial monogram, awaited him -the private photograph albums, which the curators wanted to show first to a relative of the Romanov family.

Through his selection of images from the family albums, the author here tells the story of the last Tsar, one of the saddest of twentieth-century politics. Nicholas II was a man both unprepared and ill equipped to rule the greatest empire in the world, and under the influence of Alexandra, the wife he so adored, he led Russia to disaster. But theirs was also an extraordinary love story, as the three hundred photographs in this book reveal. Away from the responsibilities of Empire, we see a close and loving family of simple tastes and great candour. The photographs clearly illustrate the personalities of Nicholas and Alexandra and of their four daughters -Olga, Tatiana, Maria and Anastasia — and beloved son and heir Alexis, who suffered from haemophilia and whose every move was carefully watched.

The family were keen, and sometimes talented, amateur photographers, who took their own cameras with them everywhere, be it on family picnics or on state occasions. The book thus illustrates a fascinating transition from the joy and relaxation of the early years, through the tension caused by the Tsarevich’s illness, to the stresses and anxiety of the First World War and the coming Revolution. These photographs provide a new perspective on the life of the Imperial family, and constitute an invaluable historical document.”

Savonarola was an Italian Dominican friar and an influential contributor to the politics of Florence from 1494 until his execution in 1498. He was known for his book burning, destruction of what he considered immoral art, and his perception of what he thought the Renaissance — which began in his Florence and was at its beginning — ought to become. He vehemently preached against the moral corruption of much of the clergy at the time, and his main opponent was Rodrigo Borgia, who was Pope Alexander VI from 1492, through Savonarola's death, to 1498.Notes: Size: 7¾" x 5". The Thatcher Era and Its Legacy by Peter Riddell (£48.00)Publisher: Blackwell — 1991Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0631182683]Condition: Good. Light reading creases to the spine. Pages lightly age-tanned. Description: First in this edition. [First: The Thatcher Decade, 1991] Jacket illustration: Mrs Thatcher leaving No. 10 for Buckingham Palace after resigning.

From the cover: “In 1989, in The Thatcher Decade, Peter Riddell provided the most wide-ranging and accessible analysis to date of the impact of Mrs. Thatcher’s government on the British economy and society in the 1980s. Now, following Margaret Thatcher’s sudden and dramatic departure from office in November 1990, he extends his classic account of the Thatcher years to include an assessment of her legacy and its consequences for Britain in the next decade.

Margaret Thatcher, one of the most remarkable of all British prime ministers, presided over a period of far-reaching change in Britain’s economy, industrial structure, labour market, society and place in the world. Looking beyond the personality of Mrs. Thatcher, Peter Riddell discusses how far these changes reflected the actions of the government, intended or unintended, rather than the influence of broader, longer-term trends common to other industrialized countries. Was there, in short, a Thatcher revolution? What are the consequences of her legacy?

The Thatcher Era is essential reading for all those interested in current politics.”

A King Betrayed: The Ill-fated Reign of Farouk of Egypt by Adel Sabit (£47.00)Publisher: London: Quartet Books — 1989Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Signed by the Author.[ISBN: 0704327112]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Price Clipped. Dust wrapper has a strong faded line the length of the join of the upper panel, otherwise pleasant. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Signed by the author on the first blank — unverified and reflected as such in the lack of premium. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs;

From the cover: “Tarouk is quite possibly the most maligned and misunderstood monarch of the mid twentieth century, writes Adel Sabit. As a cousin to the King, government official and diplomat, the author was unusually well placed to observe at first hand the course of a reign that began in high hopes with the accession of the personable teenaged monarch in 1939 and ended in disillusion and exile in 1952.

The subsequent view of Farouk has tended to owe more to propaganda and the art of the caricaturists than it has to established fact. Adel Sabit is concerned to redress the balance, to show that Farouk, while he had his weaknesses and blind spots, also ruled with considerable pragmatic skill and held incorruptibly firm to principles relating to his perception of his own country’s best interests and those of the Middle East in general. The seeds of the fall of the monarchy, the author suggests, were more closely concerned with the fragmentation of Egyptian nationalist politics and the intrigues of rival cliques.

Adel Sabit casts a shrewd, ironic eye on the events of the period, while his recollections of the heyday of the Egyptian court and its grand social occasions, dominated by the elegant figure of the queen mother, Queen Nazly, are presented in vivid vignettes. The result is an entertaining personal view of a past era that is also sharp in its analysis of events culminating in the disastrous 1948 war with Israel.”

Crosville: State Owned Without Tears (edited and Revised by John A. Senior) by W. J. Crosland Taylor (£44.00)Publisher: Transport Publishing Company — 1987Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0863171397]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper with a very small nick to the bottom corner of the upper panel. Text complete, clean and tight. Limited edition indicated by a sticker to the pastedown. Description: First in this edition. [First: State Owned Without Tears 1948-1953 by Littlebury Bros. , 1954] Illustrated by way of: Black and White Photographs; A limited printing of 1750 copies of which this is number 1246.

From the cover: “State Owned Without Tears was originally published at the time when nationalisation of Crosville Motor Services was imminent, in 1953. Written by the then General Manager, W. J. Crosland Taylor, it continued the story of the Company’s history which had been taken up to 1948 in his earlier volume, The Sowing and The Harvest.

Both books have always been regarded as classics of their kind, for Crosland Taylor, in addition to being one of the great bus men of all time, had a flair for describing the Company’s fortunes in a way which many people outside the industry found as fascinating as did those who actually worked for the Crosville organisation.

The advent of de-regulation has removed what WJC always regarded as the dead hand of government, though whether he would have approved of the Thatcher Government’s policies and their effects on the industry may be judged to be another matter.

Both books have long been out of print and in the Autumn of 1986 TPC took the decision to revise them, principally by the inclusion of the photographs which could not be included in the early post-war period of restrictions on printing. The work has been greatly assisted by present day Crosville staff and although the new editions are no longer the official versions of the Company’s history, both will be seen to have the wholehearted approval of the present management.

Produced as limited editions, both titles are expected to become sought after in the same way as did the originals over thirty years ago.”

Soviet Risk-taking and Crisis Behavior: A Theoretical and Empirical Analysis by Hannes Adomeit (£34.00)Publisher: London, Boston & Sydney: George Allen & Unwin — 1982Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0043350437]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper nicked at the top corner of the upper panel otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: From the cover: “Under what conditions is the Soviet leadership prepared to take risks in the conduct of its international affairs? Does Soviet behaviour in crises conform to the commonly accepted ‘rules’ or ‘conventions’ of crisis management? How important are threats, ultimatums and military pressure for the achievement of Soviet objectives? These are questions which have often been asked in the West by political leaders and academic specialists, but they have never been systematically analyzed. In this book Hannes Adomeit provides such an analysis.

Detailed examination of the two Berlin crises forms the empirical background against which comparisons are made with the role of the Soviets in other crises-in Cuba, the Middle East, in Vietnam and in Afghanistan -as well as with patterns of Soviet intervention in Eastern Europe. Dr Adomeit shows that successive Soviet leaderships, whether headed by Stalin, Khrushchev or Brezhnev, have acted as though guided by a set of firm ‘operational principles’. These principles and patterns of Soviet crisis behaviour are explained by the interplay of four factors: an ideology requiring constant political initiative; a wide interpretation of security interests; diverse and growing military power; and the centralizing features of the Soviet system. Together they add up to certain advantages over Western pluralist systems; in particular, they can result in successful strategic deception and surprise.

Soviet Risk-taking and Crisis Behaviour will help the general reader to understand the nature of the Soviet challenge in the years ahead and the practitioner of politics to chart the difficult but necessary course between dangerous complacency and equally dangerous over-reaction to Soviet initiatives. Above all, it will be indispensable for students and specialists in international and comparative politics, since it relates theoretical notions of risk and crisis to actual Soviet foreign policy-combining strategic analysis with bureaucratic models of decision-making.”

Measurement of Responsibility: A Study of Work, Payment and Individual Capacity by Elliott Jaques (£33.00)Publisher: Tavistock Publications — 1956Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with several short tears, a little loss at the spine ends and a 1" closed tear to the head of the upper panel. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Small name sticker to the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned.Description: From the cover: “THE MEASUREMENT OF RESPONSIBILITY presents perhaps the most funda mental approach yet achieved to the recurring individual and social stresses which disturb the industrial scene. Its theme is that one of the central factors underlying these disturbances is the absence of any objective and agreed method of assessing the re sponsibility carried by individuals at their work.

In the course of practical work by the author in collaboration with members of the Glacier Metal Com pany (an engineering concern), a re definition of the problem has emerged. What is experienced by individuals as level or weight or size of responsi bility has been observed to be con nected solely with the discretion they are required to exercise in doing their work. It has furthermore been dis covered that level of responsibility can be measured objectively and pre cisely by the maximum span of time during which an individual is expected to exercise discretion on his own account until his use of discretion is subjected to review.

By using this measurement — which he terms the time-span of discretion — Dr. Jaques has noted that individuals carrying the same maximum time-span in their work demand—quite independently — as a fair and just return for their work, precisely the same earnings and the same status, regardless of the type of work con cerned. He concludes from these findings that an unrecognized wage and salary structure is operated in tuitively in industry. But because it is unrecognized, departures from it are likely. And it is precisely such de partures which lead to trouble.

In the light of his findings, the author re-examines the meaning of work, of payment for work, and of the capacity of individuals to exercise discretion and discharge responsibility.

The methods described, and the results already obtained from their use, may indicate a route towards the resolution of some aspects of the industrial unrest and individual dis satisfaction with work which are such a crippling feature of modern industrial life. The book, in style as well as in content, is intended for economists, sociologists, political scientists, psychologists, and other social scientists — as well as industrial ists, trade unionists, government officials, and other administrators who are concerned with these problems.”

Hong Kong's History: State and Society Under Colonial Rule by Edited by Tak-Wing Ngo (£32.00)Publisher: London & New York: Routledge — 1999Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0415208688]Condition: Very Good. Description: First in this, paperback, edition. Illustrated by way of: Tables;

From the cover: “Hong Kong’s rise from obscure fishing port to world city is usually put down to good colonial rule by Britain. This book challenges such a view and shows how the city’s success was shaped by the ruling elite and other native Hong Kongers.

Rewriting Hong Kong’s history from the bottom up, the chapters investigate vital, but hitherto obscured, aspects of the colony’s rise. They cover the Chinese collaboration with the colonial regime, legal discrimination and intimidation, rural politics, social movements, government-business relations, industrial policy, flexible manufacturing and colonial historiography.

Drawing together contributions from historians, sociologists and political scientists, the book highlights the role played by a variety of social actors in Hong Kong’s history and differs both from recent celebrations of British colonialism and anti-colonial Chinese nationalism.”

Red Hill: A Mining Community by Tony Parker (£28.00)Publisher: William Heinemann — 1986Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0434577715]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: From the cover: “The miners’ strike of 1984-5 was one of the longest and most bitter in Britain’s history, and polarised arguments and emotions with more force than any other industrial dispute for years. Six months after it ended, Tony Parker went to the north-east of England to discover the feelings and thoughts of a community around a coal-mine scheduled to be closed, but where there was still hope that the National Coal Board might reprieve it.

Talking with those on both sides of the dispute — miners, their wives, Union officials, policemen, shopkeepers, young people, Coal Board officials, schoolteachers and many others — he offers a truthful and moving portrait of life in a coalfield community today. If they close the pit, they’re closing down my life says a third-generation miner, one of 800 men there whose future, ten years ago, seemed completely secure. A nervous strikebreaker, ostracised by his workmates and feeling betrayed by the delay in transferring him to another pit, talks of the loneliness and isolation of his life. And an industrial chaplain denounces the blatant evil of government strategy during the strike. Tony Parker also talked with many miners’ wives: some of them felt they had discovered themselves for the first time and been invigorated and changed for ever by their involvement with women’s support groups, while others’ marriages had broken under the strain. From this wealth of personal stories, recorded and set down with characteristic sensitivity, a picture emerges of the strike’s causes and effects which is in sharp contrast to the view presented at the time by the media.

This is a vivid social document, giving an unforgettable portrait of Red Hill, a contemporary mining community.”

From the cover: “This book is based on extensive recorded interviews with two Spaniards who grew up in peasant villages of Asturias during the 1930s. Their account provides an unusual grassroots insight into the poverty and social tensions of local life which eventually led to civil war. The dramatic years of the war itself are followed by an account of the terrible experience of exile in French concentration camps after 1939, of their participation in the Resistance, the post-1945 opposition to the Franco regime and the eventual return to their home villages and a society transformed by decades of dictatorship. This stoical and often moving account of the experience of war and exile by two ordinary combatants provides a fascinating insight into the dynamics and long-term implications of the Spanish Civil War.”

British Research and Development Aircraft: Seventy Years At the Leading Edge by Ray Sturtivant (£24.00)Publisher: Haynes — 1990Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0854296972]Condition: Good+ — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and the top corners of the boards with commensurate wear to the dust wrapper. Leans slightly. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “Every advance that has ever occurred in aviation has been the result of a new problem encountered and then solved. From the very earliest days Britain was in the forefront of progress by empirical means, and by 1917 it was already becoming the practice to build special aircraft for trials purposes to test some theory or line of research without necessarily any intention of placing those machines in production. Very soon this arrangement was formalized by the issuing of Government contacts to an Air Ministry specification.

The aircraft and designs encompassed within this system embrace most of the more important aspects of British aeronautical progress, and in this book Ray Sturtivant charts the history of such developments over a period spanning some seven decades.

The twenty years leading up to the Second World War saw research into every aspect of aeronautical theory, with projects gaining official sponsorship on a numerical scale which would be quite impracticable today. Early projects included investigations into the understanding of control in slow speed flight and the elimination of the dreaded ‘spin’ which had claimed the lives of so many pilots of the RFC and RAF.

These were the years of such aircraft as the Westland-Hill Pterodactyl which investigated the properties of swept wings, the knowledge gained being put to good use many years later in — amongst other developments — the Avro Vulcan bomber. Likewise the pre-war development of rotor-craft in the form of the Cierva and Hafner autogiros paved the way first to the helicopter and then latterly to the tilt-rotor aircraft of today.

Post-war, after enormous strides made as the result of the conflict, there were problems to solve afresh as the result of the adoption of the jet engine and the related increases in speed and height that became attainable. Similarly the jet engine provided the impetus to the many projects avidly seeking the solution to the Vertical Take-off and Landing conundrum unravelled so brilliantly in the Hawker Harrier.

Ray Sturtivant’s deeply researched text is accompanied by photographs or line drawings of almost every one of the numerous aircraft covered. These images — from the oddest to the sublimely beautiful — in themselves provide a fascinating chronology of seventy years at the leading edge of aviation technology which is now taking Britain into the 21st century.”

Freedom And Organization 1814-1914 by Bertrand Russell (£24.00)Publisher: George Allen & Unwin — 1934Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good — in Poor Dust Wrapper. Edges of the dust wrapper somewhat frayed with loss to the top edge of both panels and the spine ends. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned. Description: From the cover: “This book covers the period 1814-1914, and aims at showing the weakening of old forms of authority as a result of Liberal assaults and the more or less unintended growth of new forms of organization owing to economic and technical developments. Its subject is thus the interaction of theory and practice in the politics of the hundred years between the fall of Napoleon and the Great War. It opens with the Congress of Vienna and the Principle of Legitimacy, the Holy Alliance and the domination of Metternich. It then passes to economic theory from Malthus to Marx, as the outcome of early industrialism and the source of Radical and Socialist politics. American development is considered in two phases: the growth of democracy from Jefferson to Lincoln, and the transition from free competition to monopoly in the period from the Civil War to the Great War. Returning to Europe, the Principle of Nationality, as an outcome of Liberalism, is shown as a source of international anarchy. Bismarck, German unity, and German economic development lead to conflicts with Slav Nationalism and British trade; the British seek compensation in Africa, the Russians in the Far East. The growth of national monopolies in industry leads to economic imperialism, identifying economic and national rivalry, and increasing the importance of the State. Concentration of national power grows as International organization disappears, and war results.”Notes: Size: 9" x 5¾". Blue boards with Gilt titling to the Spine. 528 pages. The Philosophy of Civilization (2 Volumes) by Rutherford Hamilton Towner (£24.00)Publisher: G. P. Putnam's Sons — 1923Binding: Hardback First Edition. Condition: Good. Both volumes a little bruised at the spine ends and corners. Tanned at the edge of the text block. Volume II carries the dust wrapper which is worn and faded with loss at the head of the spine. Previous owners' inscription to the first blanks of both volumes. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned in both.Description: From the cover: “The impermanency of the great civilizations of the past is clearly recorded by history, and different causes have been assigned for the various rises and falls. Mr. Towner finds, however, certain main factors which are present in every case, and which, by their gradual appearance in the present, foreshadow the certain downfall of our own civilization. That the theories here presented will meet with much opposition is inevitable. Many of the movements which have been acclaimed as great steps forward, — the emancipation of woman, the prohibition of alcohol, as instances, — are shown to be vitally wrong. In support of his contentions, which are presented in a clear, forceful, and scholarly manner, he has marshalled an array of historical evidence that his opponents will find most formidable. This he asks us to study, that we may see in what a wrong direction we are headed, and by eliminating these dangerous factors render our civilization more stable and enduring.”Notes: Size: 8¾" x 5¾". Hitler's Thirty Days to Power: January 1933 by Henry Ashby Turner, Jr. (£23.00)Publisher: Bloomsbury — 1996Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 9780747530046]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “Every one has heard of Hitler. Most know he was the dictator of Germany who caused the Second World War and the slaughter of millions of Jews. But how Hider got power is another matter. Few understand the way in which his dictatorship came about. Because Germany was a republic when Hitler became chancellor, many assume that he was democratically elected by a majority of the German people. Such was not, however, the case. His rise to power was far more complicated and, above all, more chancy. It was, in fact, a very near thing that could have been thwarted at numerous points. Much of Hitler’s story has been ably recounted in previous books, but no one has yet subjected to thorough scrutiny the dramatic events of the crucial month of January 1933, at the end of which Hitler became head of the German government. To tell that story is the task of this book.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". [XII] 255 pages. Lugard in Africa by A. A. [Arthur Alexander] Thomson & Dorothy Middleton (£23.00)Publisher: London: Robert Hale — 1959Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good — in Poor Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with a little loss to the head of both panels and damp stain to the reverse. Upper board damp stained. Leans. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps;

From the cover: “HERE is the real-life adventure story of a man who landed in Africa at the age of thirty, disappointed in love, thwarted in ambition, and almost penniless. Destiny drew him adventuring to Lake Nyasa, where he organised a handful of traders and missionaries in their fight against the Arab slave traders and led them single-handed in a night-attack on the enemy stockade. Undeterred by a wound that pained him all the rest of his life, he blazed a trail to the Kingdom of Buganda, pressed on into virtually unknown territories further north, and, in a later journey, trekked to the heart of the savage Kalahari Desert. Then, at thirty-eight, he found his true life’s task in Nigeria, where he raised the West Africa Frontier Force, curbed the cruel and turbulent Emirs of the North and, in the years that followed, laid the foundations of good government on which the country has grown into a modern state with democratic institutions, looking forward to complete independence.

This man was Frederick Dealtry, Lord Lugard, the first and perhaps the greatest of Britain’s colonial administrators. Yet renowned as he was for his tremendous administrative achievements in West Africa, he was no ready-made governor, tailored in Whitehall. Nothing among his later successes is more vital and enthralling than the tale of those early African years — years of hardship and loneliness borne with incredible courage.

The story of these years under the harsh African sun is recounted in this stirring biography.”

Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with a little loss. Leans heavily. Boards faded. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Drawings; Genealogical Tables;

From the cover: “Long before Alfred became King of England, there was a mighty Arab empire in the East. For the Arabs, inspired by the teachings of Mohammed, had swept out of the barren deserts of the Arabian Peninsula and conquered country after country. Their lands stretched from Gibraltar to China, and for a while Baghdad was the crossroads of the world. Fur traders from the steppes of Russia mingled with spice merchants from India and China in the great bazaars.

This authoritative book brings alive for children and their parents the Golden Age of the Arab Empire which ended violently many hundreds of years ago, but preserved for us much of the learning of Greece and the ancient world.”

Government And Politics In The United States by Guy B. Hathorn, Howard R. Penniman & Mark F. Ferber (£22.50)Publisher: D. Van Nostrand Company — 1965Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Good — in Poor Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper is loose, faded overall and more so at the spine with a short closed tear to the head of the lower panel and the head of the spine. Upper board lightly sprung. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: 2nd edition, 1st printing, [First Published: 1961] Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Charts; Tables; Maps;

From the cover: “THIS new edition of Government and Politics in the United States is fully up to date — including materials on the changing roles of President and Vice-President, the 1964 nominating conventions, the campaigns, and the elections. The chapter on civil liberties has been significantly revised to take into account the many changes in the Supreme Court’s interpretation of the first 10 Amendments and the Fourteenth Amendment. There is also a discussion of both the Twenty-Third and Twenty-Fourth Amendments. Special attention has been given to the major changes in state politics and in state legislative make-up growing out of the Court’s decisions in the re-apportionment cases that started with Baker v. Carr. In the chapters dealing with state and local government, changes made have been the result of new research as much as in the legal and constitutional positions of governments at this level.

The authors present a broad, realistic picture of all levels of American government — origins, history, structure, and operation. Balanced and interesting, the text clearly analyzes the principles, structure, functions, and subtleties of the operation of American government.

The organization of the text reflects an exceptional concern for teachability. In each chapter, a preface sets the stage for the material that follows; the main text is divided into convenient units; a summary focuses attention on the underlying themes discussed; an annotated bibliography (brought up to date) introduces important authorities and source materials. Students can readily master the fundamentals of government, leaving the teacher free to develop specific topics.

In every chapter, concrete examples bring the student into close contact with the political process. Numerous photographs, charts, graphs, and maps (many new to this edition) complement the text material. The end product is an absorbing, timely study of our governmental system.”
