The Battle of Spicheren August 6th 1870 and the Events That Preceded It: A Study in Practical Tactics and War Training by G. F. R. [George Francis Robert] Henderson (£54.00)Publisher: Aldershot: Gale & Polden — 1909Binding: Hardback Condition: Good. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding with fading to the spine and some small marks to both boards. Description: 2nd (revised) edition, later printing [First Published: 1902] Illustrated by way of: Black & White Drawings; Fold-Out Maps; Fold-out Map to the frontispiece;

From the cover: “This account, penned by a noted British military historian of the late 19th century, remains one of the best narratives of a 19th-century battle yet published.

The Battle of Spicheren was fought in early August 1870, and like many of the battles in the opening phase of the Franco-Prussian war, could be termed an encounter battle. Fighting over very difficult terrain, German forces dislodged the French II Corps after a heroic defence. Henderson not only drew on the General Staff works and other official sources available to military historians of the late 19th century — the value of his work is that he also utilised many other accounts, including regimental histories.

He presents an extremely detailed narrative of the battle. Following a full discussion of the events of 6 August 1870, he also discusses the tactics of the battle, and training and other characteristics of the troops involved.”

Medieval Sculpture by Roberto Salvini (£31.00)Publisher: London: Michael Joseph — 1969Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0718105788]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Top edge dye has run slightly on the first blank and pastedown. Slight and light spotting to the start and finish. Text complete, clean and tight otherwise. Description: Jacket illustration: Gothic Pieta from Seeon, Bavaria c. 1420-30. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Plates;

From the cover: “The history of medieval sculpture in Western Europe is often described as a gradual rediscovery of technical skill and naturalism. In this volume, the author approaches his subject from a different angle, tracing the development of sculpture against a background of changing political, social and religious structures and in relation to the growth of written and spoken languages. He demonstrates that a new kind of sculpture, a humble, popular style which developed from Roman provincial sculpture, appeared and existed side by side with courtly styles which preserved or rediscovered much of the dignity of Late Classical art.

As feudalism declined, this dichotomy between the popular and courtly disappeared. The first literary Romance languages took root and regional Romanesque styles developed, identified with religious architecture and sculptors like Gislebertus, Wiligelmo and Antelami.

In the Gothic age, national idioms developed in the figurative arts as France, England and Germany became unified monarchical states. In Italy a national consciousness, on a cultural level, evolved; with it are associated the sculptors of the Pisano family and the cathedrals they decorated in Pisa and Siena.

As the Renaissance flowered in Italy and southern France, the Late Gothic style continued in the north, especially in Germany, where the work of Riemen-schneider and Veil Stoss is outstanding in this period.

This volume, spanning over 1,000 years from the fifth to the fifteenth century, contains a remarkable selection of illustrations which follow closely the historical development and represent the finest examples of Medieval art.”

The Bomber Command Handbook 1939-1945 by Jonathan Falconer (£29.00)Publisher: Sutton Publishing — 1998Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0750918195]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Top edge of the dust wrapper a little rubbed otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: Jacket illustration: The crew of 50 Squadron's Lancaster III, ED810 'Z-Zebra' prepare to board before a night raid in Spring 1943. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Diagrams;

From the cover: “Night after night through six long years of war RAF Bomber Command’s squadrons pounded away at the cities of Nazi Germany in a determined effort to bring the Third Reich to its knees. Pitted against Bomber Harris’s aircrews and aircraft were some of the most effective and deadly defences the world has ever seen. For Bomber Command to launch a ‘maximum effort’ raid on the Ruhr by night, or a low-level strike on an enemy target in occupied Europe by day, a huge amount of planning was involved.

Why, when and where were the bomber airfields built? Who decided the strategic bombing policy? How was the overall command structure organised, from the Air Council down to individual bomber squadron level? How did the RAF train its bomber crews? What aircraft did they fly and what weapons did they use? Who were their commanders and who were the men that made up the rank and file of the Command? How was a raid planned and, once it was launched, what happened? What aids did crews use to navigate to the target and evade enemy defences? What kinds of uniform and flying kit did they wear? What awards and medals were they eligible to receive? These questions and many more are answered in the most comprehensive review yet of Bomber Command’s organisation and operations in the Second World War.

The legacy of Bomber Command in the 1990s is revealed in a detailed listing of museums and memorials nationwide. A series of comprehensive appendices list all RAF bomber airfields, their user squadrons, aircraft and commanding officers, operational statistics and a detailed war diary.

The Bomber Command Handbook is fully illustrated with 200 archive photographs and is an indispensable addition to the reference bookshelves of all who have an interest in the RAF and its controversial bomber offensive during the Second World War.”

Hitler's Thirty Days to Power: January 1933 by Henry Ashby Turner, Jr. (£23.00)Publisher: Bloomsbury — 1996Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 9780747530046]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “Every one has heard of Hitler. Most know he was the dictator of Germany who caused the Second World War and the slaughter of millions of Jews. But how Hider got power is another matter. Few understand the way in which his dictatorship came about. Because Germany was a republic when Hitler became chancellor, many assume that he was democratically elected by a majority of the German people. Such was not, however, the case. His rise to power was far more complicated and, above all, more chancy. It was, in fact, a very near thing that could have been thwarted at numerous points. Much of Hitler’s story has been ably recounted in previous books, but no one has yet subjected to thorough scrutiny the dramatic events of the crucial month of January 1933, at the end of which Hitler became head of the German government. To tell that story is the task of this book.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". [XII] 255 pages. Regional Growth Theory by Harry W. [Ward] Richardson (£23.00)Publisher: Macmillan — 1974Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0333144279]Condition: Very Good — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper which is a little rubbed overall. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: 2nd printing. [First Published: 1973]

From the cover: “This book develops a theory of regional economic growth that attempts to integrate space and distance into the analysis of the regional growth differentials. This requires an explanation of the phenomena of concentration and agglomeration in the space economy, and their force relative to dispersion tendencies. It is argued that a satisfactory theory must be capable of simultaneously explaining unbalanced growth in the interregional system and the spatial unevenness of development within each region.

The book also contains a review of the current state of regional growth theory. In particular, considerable stress is laid on the irrelevance of neoclassical assumptions in regional analysis. The theory developed places much emphasis on the concepts of agglomeration economies and locational preferences, the importance of which illustrates the inadequacies of the price mechanism as a spatial allocator of resources. It is also argued that it is vital to take account of the urban dimension of regional development and to analyse how the spatial structure influences resource mobility.

Although the analysis is primarily theoretical, the objective throughout is to shed light on the regional growth process in the real world and to make regional growth theory more relevant to policy-makers. In particular, efforts are made to structure the model in a testable form, while the problems of empirical verification and the policy implications of regional growth theory are also discussed.”

Six Months To Oblivion: The Eclipse Of The Luftwaffe Fighter Force by Gerbig Werner (£14.50)Publisher: Purnell — 1975Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently faded at the spine of the dust wrapper.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “This book covers the last chapter, the decline and the end of air defence in Germany. It is a diary of losses and a chronicle in which the grass-roots fighter pilot plays the lead. It tells of the young men who joined their squadrons full of optimism and derring-do, only to give their lives to no purpose in a last desperate endeavour. Its focal point is the controversial Operation Baseplate on the morning of New Year’s Day 1945, an operation in which the German fighter force received its final mortal wound. Losing some 230 aircrew in less than 4 hours, the fighter units suffered their most severe defeat. Only now, after years of evaluation of all available sources, can the true figures of fighter losses on January 1st, 1945 be reported. Imagination boggles at the tragic events that took place in the skies over Germany and the West as the War neared its end; even in the perspective of history the full extent of the debacle can scarcely be depicted. The facts that mainly characterise the end of air defence over Germany and in the, West are these: neglect of the fighter force in favour of an ‘offensive air capability’; the inability of the high commands of the Luftwaffe and the Wehrmacht to appreciate the significance of what was actually going on in Germany’s skies; the lack of replacement pilots, and of fuel; the Allied superiority in numbers and equipment as the War drew to its close; and finally, in East and West alike, the penny-packeting of the forces still available.”Notes: Size: 9¼" x 6¼". 140 pages. National Service: The Best Years of Their Lives by Trevor Royle (£14.00)Publisher: André Deutsch [Andre Deutsch] — 2007Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 9780233002309]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Leans otherwise a very well presented copy including the audio CD-ROM in flap to the front pastedown. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Tables;

From the cover: “Today, in an era of pared-down volunteer forces, National Service is something of a curiosity — a relic of the post-war era. However, to the millions who experienced their two-year period of conscription, it was a required rite of passage and a defining influence on their lives.

National Service: The Best Tears of Their Lives is the definitive history of that last period of conscription. It looks back at an era where young men entered into an experience that changed their lives irrevocably whether soldier, sailor or airman.

Many fought wars in far-off colonial outposts, such as Malaya, Kenya and Cyprus, while others learned skills and trades that they could build on once back in Civvy Street. Whether positive or negative, the conscripts went in boys and came out men.

Trevor Royle brings together the personal memories of many of the National Servicemen and his own painstaking research into the subject, to create a book that evokes one of the key periods in post-war British military history and questions whether conscription has a place in twenty-first-century life.”

From the cover: “Irja Parve was born in Tallinn, capital of Estonia, on May 20, 1935. In I960, on graduating from the Institute of Pedagogy, University of Tallinn, where she read modern languages, she was called to see Major Erik Liim, head of the Intourist office in Soviet Estonia.

An important Song Festival was shortly to take place in Tallinn and a Tourist Party was expected from the Free World — the first since the Russian occupation of Estonia in 1940. Irja was offered a post as guide and interpreter. As soon as she accepted the post, however, she found herself in the grip of the Soviet Secret Service — the KGB.

Eighteen months later, Irja married Mark Tarum — an exiled Estonian domiciled in Sweden and a member of this Tourist Party. In the summer of 1962, she joined her husband in Stockholm, becoming the first Estonian to be ‘married off’ to an exile by the KGB.

The following two summers, in 1963 and 1964, she was forced to revisit Tallinn in order to receive fresh instructions from the KGB for espionage work in Sweden. In 1964, the KGB suggested that she should get a divorce and marry a certain retired colonel of the Swedish army.

Juri Remmelgas, one of the most prominent Estonian publicists in the West, has called this book ‘A Handbook for every Western tourist who intends visiting the Soviet Union’.”

Learning to Glow: A Nuclear Reader by Edited by John Bradley (£13.00)Publisher: University of Arizona Press — 2000Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0816519560]Condition: Good+. Gently rubbed at the edges of the spine and wraps.Description: First in this, paperback, edition. From the cover: “Atomic energy has been cloaked in secrecy by government, industry, and the military, but for many Americans the effects of radiation have been less than secret. Just ask the radium workers in Ottawa, Illinois, the “downwinders” of Utah, or unsuspecting veterans of the Gulf War. When told from the perspective of ordinary people, nuclear history takes on a much different tone from that of the tranquil voices of authority who always told us we had nothing to fear. In Learning to Glow, writers such as Scott Russell Sanders, Terry Tempest Williams, and Barbara Kingsolver reveal the psychic and emotional fallout of the Cold War and of subsequent developments in nuclear science. Here are stories of and by ordinary people who have suffered the consequences of the decisions made by those in power — stories that will challenge readers to re-examine their preconceptions about the way we deal with issues of nuclear arms and radioactive waste.”Notes: Size: 9" x 6". 317 pages.
