Genealogy for Beginners by Arthur J. Willis (£9.50)Publisher: Phillimore — 1976Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0900592311]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper, heavier so at the tips. Price Clipped. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: 3rd, revised, edition. [First Edition: Ernest Benn, 1955] From the cover: “THIS IS A NEW EDITION OF A CLASSIC. Many books have been written for the would-be genealogist, but none has equalled the success of Mr. Willis’s Genealogy for Beginners. Since it was first published, this readable little guide has introduced more ancestry-tracers to the subject than any other. Now completely up-dated, revised and re-set, the book in your hand is the best buy for the beginner of today.

Tracing your own family history and gradually constructing your own, unique, pedigree is an absorbing hobby, a never-ending personal detective investigation. This book tells you exactly how to set about it; how to collect information from living relatives; how to make full use of all the clues and traditions you already have; how and where to find written records; how, with luck, to build up a complete pedigree back to the late Middle Ages.

The growth in interest in genealogy has been phenomenal in recent years; the Society of Genealogists of London having doubled its membership in a decade and some twenty vigorous regional societies having sprung up throughout Britain, mainly in the mid-seventies. Mr. Willis can claim credit for much of that growth through the influence of this book. In addition, he has made a big contribution to the wealth of published source material available to searchers for British records. The publishers will gladly supply details of his other books on the subject — and those of many other authors — and will be pleased to put new genealogists in touch with the secretaries of any of the societies referred to above.

Ancestry-tracing is fun; it brings history to life and it gives a greater sense of personal identity. Our ancestors cease to be a vague concept and become real people, part of each of them living still, in us, their descendants. They may have been ordinary, may have been blue-blooded or famous, but whatever they were the search itself is rewarding and the satisfaction of knowing is permanent and a proper source of pride.”

International Heraldry by L. G. [Leslie Gilbert] Pine (£9.50)Publisher: David & Charles — 1970Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0715360132]Condition: Good. A pleasant enough reading copy. Heavily faded at the spine. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: First in this, paperback, edition. Illustrated with black and white photographs.

From the cover: “A comprehensive survey of the science and art of armorial bearings and heraldic devices, this book traces the history of heraldry from its small medieval origins as a means of identification on the field of battle to its present-day manifestations in a variety of forms throughout the world. English, Scottish and Irish heraldry are separately examined and there is a full account of their evolution over the ages, their adaptation to civil uses, and their place in the modern world. An extensive section on heraldry in the United States, where an American College of Arms has recently been established and Rolls of Arms are regularly issued, explains heraldry’s relationship to genealogy and the methods by which armigerous ancestors in other countries may be traced and the right to a coat of arms established. Other chapters are devoted to Continental and Oriental Heraldry, for while the groundwork of the science is universal, the practice of it varies greatly from country to country. A section of special interest deals with the Arms of institutions, ranging from commercial undertakings and national bodies to colleges, universities and naval and military units. A final chapter surveys the histories of the arms of royal houses, sovereign states, Indian Princes and of the state symbols of Commonwealth countries.

Written in characteristically readable style by a leading international authority on the subject, and fully illustrated, this is a book which makes the study of heraldry as clear and as easy of comprehension for the student as ever were the insignia so proudly borne in the van of battle in medieval times.”

Tewkesbury: The Way We Were by Cliff Burd (£9.50)Publisher: The History Press — 2008Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0752446924]Condition: Near Fine. Description: First in this, paperback, edition. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Black & White Drawings;

From the cover: “The county town of Tewkesbury stands on a flood plain, surrounded by water on all sides, with two major rivers and several smaller brooks which have always flooded. Those that have lived here all their lives will remember that the fields surrounding the town have always flooded at irregular intervals. Flooding in the nineteenth century through to 2007 and Tewkesbury’s most severe flood in living memory, will bring back graphic memories of how the people of the town worked together to overcome these difficult times.

The town has seen little in the way of major industry with the majority of people working in two or three jobs at a time to make ends meet. Given all the difficulties of long hours, low pay and poor conditions, however, its residents have always found time for leisure activities as the Thursday Half-Day Closing Football Club clearly demonstrates! This volume endeavours to show how leisure activities have changed over the past century with many of the images showing sporting groups, fairs and festive activities.

Cliff Burd has brought together Tewkesbury’s historic events in a heart-warming style that will delight both residents and visitors to the town.”

Tracing Your Ancestors by Marilyn Yurdan (£9.50)Publisher: David & Charles — 1988Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0715390937]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently faded at the spine of the dust wrapper. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: From the flap: “Tracing Your Ancestors offers a completely new approach to the subject of family history — one which is all too often considered dull and dry, or at best, difficult by those who have yet to discover its fascination. Instead of the usual method of working through the sources available to the family historian, Marilyn Yurdan has attempted to deal with the events in the ancestor’s life which actually led to these sources being compiled. These include Birth and Baptism, Work and Play, Parish Life and Death and Burial, instead of concentrating on record offices and repositories.”Notes: Size: 8¾" x 5¾". Dark and Light: The Story of the Guinness Family by Derek Wilson (£8.50)Publisher: London: Weidenfeld & Nicolson — 1998Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0297817183]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Edges of the text block lightly spotted otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Genealogical Tables;

From the cover: “In this fascinating book Derek Wilson traces the Guinness Family from it’s lowly beginnings into the Protestant ascendancy to the present day through three main narrative threads corresponding to different lines of the family; brewing, banking and missionary work. Wilson’s account suggests that the path to success for the brewery was never assured, built as it was against a background of the Napoleonic wars, the establishment of the Irish Free State and Civil war, and 2 further world wars.

After some setbacks in the early 19th century Robert co-founded the Guinness Mahon banking dynasty in England. The Bank remained a family concern despite the 1929 crash and IRA kidnapping until the accidental death of John Guinness, and in 1988 the bank went under Yokohama control. The family was not without it’s decorated heroes and it’s professional soldiers, fighting in both world wars, the Boer war, and India. In many ways the branch of the family that went into missionary work is the most interesting, and includes two medical missionary brothers, one in China and the other in the Belgian Congo where he spent much of his career campaigning against the Belgians cruelty, and then also in China during the Japanese invasion. This is not to say there weren’t wastrels and eccentrics: there were, particularly in this century, and these Wilson describes with aplomb if not relish.”
