People and Places: Country House Donors and The National Trust by James Lees-Milne (£32.00)Publisher: London: John Murray — 1993Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0719551455]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: A Later Printing. Contains: Black & white photographs; Black & white drawings;

From the cover: “In 1936, James Lees-Milne became Country Houses secretary of the infant National Trust. Already fired with compassion for ancient architecture, ‘so vulnerable and transient’, he could now pursue what amounted to a vocation.

His arrival increased the Trust’s permanent staff to four, a close-knit community, somewhat cramped in a stuffy office facing a shunting yard in Victoria. The Trust at that time owned only two country houses, one ruined and the other empty, but changing conditions, accelerated by the War, now brought a stream of offers. James Lees-Milne’s chief task was to visit, as ambassador and aesthetic assessor, would-be donors in their domains. So young a man arriving often on a bicycle must have astonished those patrician figures, who themselves might be survivors from the Victorian age. Nor was his task easy: it involved legal thickets, intricate family squabbles, dilemmas of artistic judgement, and owners who, in their fastnesses, might have grown very eccentric indeed.

In this book James Lees-Milne describes fourteen houses, including Knole, Blickling, Stourhead and Cotehele. He brings the buildings, their owners and pasts brilliantly to life and tells the sometimes cliffhanging tales of their transfer to the Trust. Readers of the celebrated diaries will not be surprised by the wit and charm in these pages. But everyone, whether the author’s devoted following or visitors to the Trust’s great houses, will be enchanted by the extraordinary, amusing and touching picture they will find here of an England now lost.”

Jackson Pollock by Kirk Varnedoe with Pepe Karmel (£26.00)Publisher: London: The Tate Gallery — 1999Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 1854372769]Condition: Very Good. Lightly pulled at the head of the upper wrapper otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: Contains: Black & white photographs; Chronological tables; Colour photographs;

From the cover: “Jackson Pollock is widely considered the most challenging and influential American artist of the twentieth century. In his revolutionary paintings of the late 1940s, he dripped or poured paint into complex webs of interlacing lines, rhythmically punctuated by pools of colour. With their all over composition, seemingly total abstraction, and gestural but remarkably controlled handling of paint, these powerful works announced the emergence of Abstract Expressionism.

This sumptuously illustrated book accompanies the major Pollock exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Tate Gallery, London, in 1998-99. The Tate exhibition is the first full survey of Pollock’s work to be shown in Britain in forty years. An essay by Kirk Varnedoe explores Pollock’s life, the mythology that so quickly grew up around him as the prototypical “action painter”, and the critical interpretations of his legacy. It traces the development of his work from European and American models, and discusses his powerful impact on later artists. Pepe Karmel’s innovative study of Hans Namuth’s photographs and films of Pollock at work offers new insight into the genesis of Pollock’s paintings.

Jackson Pollock includes over 200 colour reproductions of paintings, drawings, and prints, including life-sized details and foldouts of major paintings. An illustrated chronology tells the story of the artist’s life.”

Designing Pictorial Symbols by Nigel Holmes; Rose DeNeve (£20.50)Publisher: Watson-Guptill — 1985Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0823013278]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently faded at the spine of the dust wrapper, top corners of both panels slightly rubbed with a small puncture to the lower panel near the spine. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: From the cover: “THIS BOOK appeals to the basic creative search of designers for original approaches as it shows in practical, easy-to-follow steps, the conceptual thinking and artistic follow through needed to create effective pictorial symbols. Graphic designers, illustrators, editors, and others who, are responsible for presenting information in a compact, instantly recognizable form will find invaluable, proven methods and fresh results developed by one of the world’s best and most widely known graphic designers.

The book begins with a fascinating introduction that traces the emergence of pictorial symbols from the first abstract strokes cut 50,000 years ago by our ancestors into bone or rock, to the development of written symbols, the use of trademarks, and today’s spreading use of pictorial symbols in cars, on roadways, and in transportation terminals to bring international understanding to a world separated by hundreds of languages.

The second section consists of symbols used in recent years in Time magazine. These cover an enormous range of subject matter touching nearly every aspect of human endeavour — from entertainment to electoral politics, from sports and crime to energy, disarmament, and war.

The third section describes the intricate, creative process that marked the famous American Renewal print campaign symbol used by Time, Life, Fortune, Sports Illustrated, People, Money, and Discover magazines as a common thread for a series of magazine articles on the revival of the American Dream.

In the fourth section, you will see the process and solutions to the challenging assignment of presenting some twenty sports symbols that must be fresh in themselves, but also different each year, as used to identify sports broadcasts in the official English ‘TV/radio guide, Radio Times.

A rich gallery of annotated examples makes up the book’s fifth section.”

The Wirral by Alan Brack (£20.50)Publisher: Phillimore & Co. — 1988Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0850336791]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the head of the spine. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Reprint with amendments. [First Edition: 1980] Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the flap: “The Wirral was already an old-established administrative unit at the time of Domesday Book. This book is concerned with all those aspects of the Wirral, whether of history, architecture or landscape, that give the peninsula its individuality. Well known as a writer on the locality, Alan Brack starts with the immense advantage of having lived there nearly all his life. His book is at once scholarly, readable and entertaining. He has studiously avoided the highly romanticised view which has persisted in other accounts of the area and his opening chapter, ‘A Place Apart’, sets the tone for the whole book. There are sections on Birkenhead and Wallasey and on Bebington and Bromborough. An authoritative account of the establishment of Ellesmere Port is followed by a chapter on the Urbanised Districts of Hoylake, Neston and Heswall, on the Urbanised, Unexpected and Purpose-built villages, on the open spaces and on crossing the Mersey. The description of Port Sunlight, with its vignette of Lord Leverhulme, is especially well-informed. Human interest relieves a generally topographical approach through the appearance in the local context of the many notable men and women who have been associated with the Wirral.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". New London Architecture by Kenneth Powell (£20.00)Publisher: London: Merrell — 2001Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1858941504]Condition: Very Good — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper, more heavily at the foot of the upper panel and the tail of the spine. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “London today is vibrantly reinventing itself, and the quality of its new buildings is putting the city at the forefront of world architectural innovation. Through a wealth of stunning new projects and bold revisions of its older buildings, architects from all quarters are reimagining London’s cityscape.

New London Architecture paints a comprehensive picture of the most important recent developments in London, as well as works yet to be completed. Renowned architectural writer Kenneth Powell examines over 100 different projects, and traces the political manoeuvring and creative flowerings that are reshaping modern London.

The architectural renaissance of Britain’s capital has affected the design of everything from residential skyscrapers to corporate offices; from internationally important sports facilities to chic new boutiques; from imaginative new medical centres and libraries to striking riverside dwellings for students. This book illustrates in full colour not just the headline-grabbing public works such as the British Airways London Eye, the Jubilee line extension, the Millennium Bridge and interventions at the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum, but also a wide variety of smaller-scale projects that together offer a manifesto for radical change.

Old battle lines between radicalism and conservatism have been abandoned as Londoners are proving themselves ever more ready to respond to the ambitious and dynamic changes happening around them. Norman Foster’s Swiss Re tower — the controversial ‘gherkin’ — being built in the heart of London’s financial district could not have been countenanced even a decade ago. The Prince of Wales’s famous attack on the proposed National Gallery extension as “a monstrous carbuncle” now appears entirely outmoded.

With illustrations, plans and critical texts of the projects that are combining to reinvigorate London’s urban landscape, New London Architecture provides a detailed and authoritative portrait, indispensable to professionals and public alike, of a city avid to embrace”

The Encyclopedia of Modelmaking Techniques by Christopher Payne (£18.50)Publisher: New Burlington — 1996Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1861555407]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper. Slightly rubbed at the spine ends. The reverse of the dust wrapper has offset from a scrape to the upper panel. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Drawings; Diagrams;

From the cover: “The Encyclopedia of Modelmaking Techniques presents an entirely new techniques-based approach to modelmaking. Materials, methods and components used in one area of modelmaking can often be transferred to another with very positive results. Rather than dealing with traditional subject areas, four main themes are identified — Structures, Landscapes, Figures and animals and Vehicles and machinery — and used to demonstrate the relevant techniques for a variety of materials. This approach enables the professional or hobby building modeller to access the section on figures to populate his landscape. Similarly, the military figure or vehicle modeller can find in the landscape section the secrets for placing his work in a background context.

This book also includes a brief history of models and modelmaking. A section on design looks at the different processes of research and construction and designing specifically for safety, ease of construction, display, control and operation. Comprehensive tools and materials lists identify both essential and supplementary items and ensure that you have the correct tools for your modelling projects.

Each of the four major themes is illustrated by a series of step-by-step projects, demonstrating the various techniques and materials used in professional and hobby modelmaking. An inspirational gallery of works by highly regarded modelmakers is accompanied by detailed descriptions of how the models were created. Finally, a section on presentation will show you how to make the most of your projects by displaying them to their best effect.”

The Efficiency Experts: An Impartial Survey of Management Consultancy by Laura Tatham (£18.00)Publisher: Business Publications — 1964Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the edges, slightly tanned. A nice copy of a not-so-common title.Description: From the cover: “Are management consultants the answer to a businessman’s prayer? Or are they unprincipled rogues who, for an exorbitant fee, tell a company nothing it does not already know and saddle it with a lot of elaborate, unnecessary and expensive procedures?

To answer these extreme questions and many more between, Laura Tatham has obtained first-hand evidence from dozens of consultants and from as many clients, both satisfied and dissatisfied. This book is the result of her inquiries.

An impartial survey, The Efficiency Experts examines in detail what management consultants are, how they work and what they set out to accomplish. It suggests ways in which the businessman can make best use of consultants, and how he can assess whether or not a firm is likely to do a good job. CHICANO VISIONS: American Painters On the Verge by Cheech Marin (£16.50)Publisher: Bullfinch Press — 2002Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0821228064]Condition: Very Good. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Plates [3]; Colour Drawings [96]; Essays by Max Benavidez, Constance Cortez & Tere Romo.

From the cover: “Chicano Visions: American Painters on the Verge is the most comprehensive survey of a remarkably dynamic, and growing, body of work. The Chicano art movement was developed outside the national and international spotlights, mainly in Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay area, San Antonio, and other cities in south Texas. Early on, when making a name for themselves in the 1970s, Chicano artists largely worked alone and without encouragement or acknowledgment from the art community. In time, a few important groups such as Los Four, Asco, and Con Safo created a sense of identity and cohesion. But it was city life — the barrio and the street itself — that provided the ultimate stimulus and common ground for these artists, who used city walls as their first “canvas”. In the past few decades, Chicano artists have emerged as powerful agents of change and drive. Figures such as Carlos Almaraz, Mel Casas, Carmen Lomas Garza, Gronk, Wayne Healy, Adan Hernandez, Leo Limon, Frank Romero, John Valadez, Patssi Valdez, and Vincent Valdez are among the twenty-six artists showcased here; they are but a handful of the Chicano artists — overwhelmingly university or art-school trained — working in the United States today.

Cheech Marin, best known as an actor, performer, and philanthropist, is the country’s foremost collector of Chicano art. Over the years, Marin has not only actively worked to support Chicano artists but has become their friend and most ardent spokesperson. As he writes in the introduction, “With little commercial encouragement, these artists have struggled to gain acceptance in the gallery world. Many painters show their works in restaurants, coffeehouses, or wherever there is a wall and an audience. What matters is they continue to create. “ Now, through Marin’s efforts and those of many other individuals and institutions, these richly appealing works are available to the public in this landmark publication.

At the core of Chicano Visions is a portfolio of ninety-six stunning paintings, largely drawn from Marin’s own collection. Three essays by leading scholars in the field, an introduction and commentaries on the works by Cheech Marin, and biographies of the artists combine to make this an invaluable art and reference book.

Chicano Visions is supported by a major art and cultural exhibition that will travel to fifteen U. S. cities over a five-year period.”

The Encyclopedia of Dream Cars: A Celebration Contemporary and Fantasy Cars by Chris Rees (£16.50)Publisher: Index — 1998Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 1859676995]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper is pulled at the head and foot of the upper panel, with a little creasing to the foot. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: First in this edition. Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs; Diagrams; Tables; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “From the Alfa Romeo spider to Lamborghini’s Diablo; from the sensational Chevrolet Corvette to the stream-lined Toyota Celica, here is the ultimate history of cars manufactured since 1976, plus those dream and futuristic cars that were marvels of car design, even though they never made it into production.

The Encyclopedia of Dream Cars is the modern guide to the automobile. This comprehensive visual reference shows every important marque from A-Z, highlighting some of the most significant and beautiful cars of the century: the Jaguar XJ 220, the McLaren F1, the Pontiac Firebird and the Lotus Esprit. Detailed descriptions, history and technical information accompany every entry, making this the most authoritative and comprehensive guide to the contemporary classic car.

In addition to presenting the newest cars, this book also highlights the world’s dream cars that were built as showcases but were never mass-produced. From the design houses of Bertone, Ghia, Ital Design, Ogle and Pininfarina, these dream cars are at the very cutting edge of car design: futuristic models that were deemed too daring, too brash or too expensive to be marketable, but which pay tribute to the imagination and drive of car designers today.

With over 900 stunning images of the cars, this book is a definitive gallery of classic and dream cars. It is a decisive reference for every enthusiast, every collector and lover of the automobile.”

Italy by Herbert Ypma (£15.50)Publisher: Thames & Hudson — 2002Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0500283478]Condition: Near Fine.Description: Illustrated with colour photographs. From the cover: “For this new volume of Hip Hotels, Herbert Ypma has ventured far beyond the rolling hills of Tuscany, the postcard-perfect Amalfi Coast, or the Grand Tour destinations of Venice, Florence and Rome, to introduce real discoveries in under-explored regions like Puglia, Basilicata and Le Marche. You might be inspired to visit the utterly refined Hotel Raya on the Aeolian island of Panarea, from whose all-white terraces you can watch the volcano of Stromboli spurt fiery lava into the night skies. At the opposite end of the country, in the ultra-stylish ski town of Cortina d’Ampezzo, is Hotel de la Poste, run today by the same family as when Hemingway used to drive up from Venice in the early 1930s. Or if you prefer the beach life and night life of the Adriatic Coast, then fashion designer Alberta Ferretti’s Carducci 76 makes a superslick base. Many hotels are a complete surprise: ancient cave-dwellings in the eroded rocky landscape of Basilicata, or the trulli of Puglia, centuries-old igloo-like constructions with conical slate roofs. And whether cave, abbey, olive mill, fishing hut or barefoot beachside palazzo, every one of these unique hotels is true to its locale in architecture, design and gastronomy.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 8". Television and Radio: Everybody's Soapbox by Bruce Parker; Nigel Farrell; (£14.50)Publisher: Blandford Press — 1983Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0713713062]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Top edges of the dust wrapper slightly ruffled. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Illustrated with cartoons. From the cover: “The chance to appear on a radio or television programme is the opportunity of a lifetime to speak to a mass audience. Yet how many people appreciate the value of such an offer, or really know how to make the most of it? With the expansion of broadcasting in the 1980s there will be more air time available to members of the public in scores of programmes, particularly those put out by regional and local television and radio stations. Nearly everyone has something to gain by a chance to appear on the air: the father searching for his teenage daughter, the secretary of the local drama group which is putting on an unusual play, the harassed mother seeking action about the damp walls of her council house, or the managing director who wants a little publicity for his firm’s award-winning product. Everybody’s Soapbox explains in an entertaining way not only how to use your time on the air effectively but how to go about obtaining it in the first place. The authors take a detailed and often humorous look into what happens behind the scenes of broadcasting. Some of the pitfalls are described, including the ones to avoid when being interviewed. Don Osmond’s cartoons complement the light-hearted but informative text. Much advice is provided, particularly for those who find themselves on the air for the first time. Radio and television techniques are revealed and the jargon is made clear. There is guidance on how to handle an interview and how best to present yourself. You can also find out the right way to deal with the film crew which may arrive at your house.”Notes: Illustrated by Don Osmond. Size: 8¾" x 5¾". The Illustrated Encyclopedia of World Cricket by Peter Arnold (£14.50)Publisher: W. H. Smith — 1986Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0863075975]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges with a slight ripple to the top corner of the upper panel. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “The Illustrated Encyclopaedia of World Cricket, with its lavish illustrations, many in colour, brings to life the whole panorama of the international game. The great matches and the great players are all vividly portrayed in words and pictures.

The largest section deals with Test cricket from its inception. Every series played is described, from the first in 1877 to the Australian visit to England in 1985 — from Charles Bannerman’s 165 not out which won the first-ever Test match for Australia, to the great batting of David Gower which won back the Ashes 108 years later.

The World Cup and other one-day international matches are also described in their various sections. Cricket history is reviewed from the mists of pre-Hambledon days, through professionalism, county cricket, and the emergence of the MCC to the rapid growth of one-day cricket in the 1960s.

A Gallery of Great Players highlights the careers of nearly 200 of the best cricketers from W. G. Grace to lan Botham, Viv Richards and Allan Border, with extended biographies and full career figures for 67 of them.

A comprehensive records section completes the book. Over 200,000 words and over 450 pictures, many in full colour, provide readers with hours of enjoyment: replaying the matches, reliving the careers of the players, comparing the records and feats of the immortals.

The book is a splendid read and an invaluable source of reference for all cricket fans.”

Just ask the radium workers in Ottawa, Illinois, the “downwinders” of Utah, or unsuspecting veterans of the Gulf War. When told from the perspective of ordinary people, nuclear history takes on a much different tone from that of the tranquil voices of authority who always told us we had nothing to fear. In Learning to Glow, writers such as Scott Russell Sanders, Terry Tempest Williams, and Barbara Kingsolver reveal the psychic and emotional fallout of the Cold War and of subsequent developments in nuclear science. Here are stories of and by ordinary people who have suffered the consequences of the decisions made by those in power — stories that will challenge readers to re-examine their preconceptions about the way we deal with issues of nuclear arms and radioactive waste.”Notes: Size: 9" x 6". 317 pages. The Romanovs: The Final Chapter by Robert K. Massie (£13.00)Publisher: Jonathan Cape — 1995Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0224041924]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Black & White Drawings;

From the cover: “In July 1991, nine skeletons were exhumed from a grave in Siberia, a few miles from the infamous cellar where the last tsar and his family were murdered seventy-three years before. Were these the Romanovs? The Romanovs: The Final Chapter provides the answer, going back to the horrifying moments of slaughter, revealing the guilt and cover-up by Lenin, then describing in dramatically suspenseful detail the efforts in post-Communist Russia to find the bodies and discover the truth.

Written almost as a detective thriller, the story includes a panoramic and colourful gallery of contemporary figures, from US Secretary of State James Baker, Russian president Boris Yeltsin and Lord Mountbatten, to fiercely antagonistic forensic experts and DNA scientists from Russia, America and Britain.

Because two skeletons — those of the tsar’s son and one of his daughters — were missing from the grave, all the tantalising tales of reappeared pretenders again loomed large. Was Anna Anderson, celebrated for more than sixty years in newspapers, books, films, ballets, really Grand Duchess Anastasia? The Romanovs: The Final Chapter answers this question, too.

Robert K. Massie’s classic Nicholas and Alexandra brought the Russian Imperial family magnificently to life and sold more than four million copies. It is natural that this master storyteller should be the one to write the final chapter to this historical tragedy.”

DJ slightly ruffled along edges. Price Clipped. Text bright and tight.Description: A Personal View of Architecture. Illustrated with colour photographs. From the cover: “HRH The Prince Of Wales publicly voiced his feelings about post-war trends in architecture for the first time in a speech to the RIBA in May 1984. His hard-hitting phrases — ‘monstrous carbuncle’ (of the National Gallery extension) and ‘giant glass stump’ (of the Mansion House Square project) — alerted the nation to his deep concern about the effect some modern architecture has had on the environment and on people’s lives, and opened what has become a major public debate. The Prince’s concern led him to write and present his first TV documentary, the 75-minute A Vision of Britain. In this book the Prince develops and expands on the themes of his film. He stresses the need to preserve the character of our towns and cities, the desirability of reviewing existing planning laws and, above all, the Importance of providing an architecture which people really want, and which is on a human scale.”Notes: Size: 9¼" x 11¾". From the cover: “Britain’s coasts and estuaries can boast an enviable diversity of bird life. There are few better places for the bird-watcher to spend some time. In this, his second, book Terence Lambert presents us with a gallery of portraits of the birds that can be seen wherever sea and land meet. He paints with a sure hand. Whether he is portraying a scavenging gull, a predatory skua making off with a young fledgling, a peregrine imperiously tearing at its prey, or a graceful tern returning to its mate on the nest, the birds are painted with the same superb accuracy of detail, and the same evocative power, that distinguished his earlier work. To study these paintings is to take a journey to our coast. They conjure up the sounds and smells of the sea, and the calls of birds across the bare desolation of the mudflats.

When Lambert’s Birds of Garden and Woodland was first published, Terence Lambert was acclaimed as a young artist of great promise. In his new book, that promise is amply fulfilled. Terence Lambert can now join the ranks of the best of the world’s bird-painters. This is a book to treasure; a delight to the eye.”

The New Philanthropists: The New Generosity by Charles Handy (£12.50)Publisher: London: William Heinemann — 2006Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0434013455]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: Signed by the Charles & Elizabeth Handy on the title page — unverified and reflected as such in the lack of premium but cursory research appears to confirm authenticity. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Drawings;

From the cover: “ Who are the new philanthropists? And how is their philanthropy ‘new’?

In this remarkable and inspiring book, the eminent management writer Charles Handy and his wife Elizabeth, a portrait photographer, have collaborated to portray a new generation of practical philanthropists, men and women who have made their own fortunes and decided to move on from financial success to try to help those in need. They are doing so not simply by giving their money away to charities and agencies but by helping actively, working on the spot with the very people who need their aid, ensuring that the initiatives are sustainable in the longer term.

As in their acclaimed The New Alchemists, the Handys have both interviewed and photographed their subjects in order to tell their inspiring stories; from the Sydney restaurateur Jeff Gambin, who personally helps to cook hot and cold menus for homeless people every night and serves up 1500 dinners at Christmas; to Niall Mellon, a young Irish property developer Who is replacing the shacks with breeze-block homes in a South African township; and Sara Davenport, who sold-her art gallery and set up the breast-cancer care centre the Haven Trust to offer integrated and holistic treatment and support.

The new philanthropists are employing their own entrepreneurial and managerial skills to make their financial contributions work directly, reaching the people they want to help face to face. Mellon started his South African building project with a million Euros of seed money, but he also takes an airbus of volunteers from his native Ireland to work alongside the locals in constructing their new homes.

This striking book of words and photographs reveals the energy and inspiration of these new ways of using wealth, revealing the motivations and satisfactions of such direct action.”

A Vision of Britain by HRH The Prince of Wales (£11.50)Publisher: Doubleday — 1989Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 038526903X]Condition: Very Good - in Good DJ. Edges of DJ somewhat ruffled, nicked at the corners of both panels. Gently bruised at head & tail of spine and corners.Description: A Personal View of Architecture. Catherine The Great: A Biography Of The Empress Of All The Russias by Zoé Oldenbourg (£11.50)Publisher: Heinemann — 1965Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with a snag at the head of the spine. Leans slightly. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: First British Edition. [First Published: Editions Gallimard, 1965] Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “Oldenbourg’s story of Russia’s incredible empress is far more exciting than most novels, infinitely better written than most histories. But it is not the politics of Catherine’s reign that Mme Oldenbourg has sought to depict in this book; it is the woman who became empress that she has brought to life. By concentrating on Catherine’s early years, Zoé Oldenbourg has succeeded in explaining a woman who had remained an enigma, even to her biographers. The story is one of incredible tension; intrigue upon intrigue followed the minor German princess who intended, somehow, to reach the throne. The conflict was such that Catherine had to rule or to perish. The eventual murder of her husband, her dizzying succession of lovers, were only the outward scandalous appurtenances of a court and an era that were still shockingly brutal and primitive, Zoé Oldenbourg has captured the full majesty of this tragedy, played against the setting of Moscow’s and St. Petersburg’s imperial palaces. Extravagant and grotesque, this is none the less a moving human story.”Notes: Size: 8¾" x 5¾". Black boards with Silver titling to the Spine. 311 pages. Human Nature: Fact and Fiction by Edited by Robin Headlam Wells & Johnjoe McFadden (£11.50)Publisher: Continuum — 2006Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0826485464]Condition: Near Fine.Description: First in this, paperback, edition. From the cover: “What do we mean by ‘human nature’? Is there a genetically determined core of humanity that unites us all as members of a single species? Or is the thing we call human nature a social construct? And how do we explain the mystery of human creativity? Do great writers have an intuitive grasp of what makes human beings tick, or are they merely the mouthpiece of contemporary culture? It has been claimed that ‘the greatest enterprise of the mind has always been and always will be the attempted linkage of the sciences and humanities’ (Edward O. Wilson). This ground-breaking book marks the beginning of a new dialogue between the two. Rather than focusing on the division between what C.P. Snow called ‘the two cultures’, it shows that the sciences and humanities have much to learn from each other. Points of disagreement remain. Yet there is in this volume a genuine attempt to bridge the gulf that has traditionally separated the sciences and humanities and to reach a better understanding of what it means to be human. Human Nature — Fact and Fiction is a major new contribution to the debate on human nature, set to be required reading for anyone with a background in either the arts or the sciences who is interested in understanding what defines us as human beings — in what we are, and why.”Notes: Foreword or introduction by A.
