The Wirral by Alan Brack (£20.50)Publisher: Phillimore & Co. — 1988Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0850336791]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the head of the spine. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Reprint with amendments. [First Edition: 1980] Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the flap: “The Wirral was already an old-established administrative unit at the time of Domesday Book. This book is concerned with all those aspects of the Wirral, whether of history, architecture or landscape, that give the peninsula its individuality. Well known as a writer on the locality, Alan Brack starts with the immense advantage of having lived there nearly all his life. His book is at once scholarly, readable and entertaining. He has studiously avoided the highly romanticised view which has persisted in other accounts of the area and his opening chapter, ‘A Place Apart’, sets the tone for the whole book. There are sections on Birkenhead and Wallasey and on Bebington and Bromborough. An authoritative account of the establishment of Ellesmere Port is followed by a chapter on the Urbanised Districts of Hoylake, Neston and Heswall, on the Urbanised, Unexpected and Purpose-built villages, on the open spaces and on crossing the Mersey. The description of Port Sunlight, with its vignette of Lord Leverhulme, is especially well-informed. Human interest relieves a generally topographical approach through the appearance in the local context of the many notable men and women who have been associated with the Wirral.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". Charts of War: The Maps and Charts That Have Informed and Illustrated War At Sea by John Blake (£20.00)Publisher: London: Conway — 2006Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1844860310]Condition: Very Good — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper pulled at the head of the upper panel with two small nicks toward the top corner. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs; Maps;

From the cover: “Information is power, and in centuries past sea charts were guarded by both a ship’s navigator and the State, stretched on oak boards or rolled in leather cylindrical quivers, locked away. As the European nations began their territorial acquisition and contest in earnest, the information charts contained of harbour approaches, coastal landmarks and hazards, currents and tides, could give one side or another the advantage.

From the ships of small expeditionary fleets, which carried navigational charts, to the requirements of modern ships involved in combined operations, which need charts to include a whole range of information, John Blake has produced a fascinating, illustrated account of the role that charts have played in planning, preventing, conducting and recording war at sea. The selection not only includes charts depicting major battles and amphibious operations, but those drawn up for tactical and espionage purposes, for coastal defence and the positioning of forts along rivers and at the entrance to harbours.

Chapters run in chronological order, organized according to the overall political scene, but the main focus is on the development of chart making and surveying in relation to changing warfare techniques. Informative captions accompany each chart, setting them in historical context and providing illuminating details about the main protagonists and the chart makers and surveyors themselves. Taken from a range of international maritime archives, they include portolan charts of Spanish acquisitions in the New World; Francis Drake’s attack of Cadiz in 1587, known as ‘the singeing of the King of Spain’s beard’; the Dutch attack on Chatham in 1667 during the Second Anglo-Dutch War; a plan of Chesapeake Bay where British naval forces failed to relieve General Cornwallis during the American War of Independence; William Bligh’s chart of the Battle of Copenhagen in 1801; charts of the Battle of Jutland, one British, one German; and the operational chart drawn up before the D-Day landings at Omaha beach.”

Another Republic: 17 European and South American Writers by Edited by Charles Simic & Mark Strand (£19.50)Publisher: Ecco Press — 1976Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0912946288]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Top edge of the text block tanned with light, occasional spotting to the leading edge. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank with a bookplate to the pastedown.Description: From the cover: “Another Republic is a gathering of the best European and South American poets and fabulists superbly trans lated by outstanding British and American writers. Ranging from such acknowledged masters as Henri Michaux and Francis Ponge to such unjustly neglected figures as Johannes Bobrowski and Fernando Pessoa, the anthology is audacious, inclusive, and unlike any other. The selections are ample enough to give the reader a clear idea of each poet’s vision and a comprehensive notion of what con temporary poetry is. Charles Simic and Mark Strand, two of America’s finest poets, have chosen wisely the writers who have most influenced the new generation of American poets, and have avoided making the predictable choices of over-anthologized poets whose reputations, the editors believe, are disproportionate to their influence.

By providing the reader with the foreign sources of what is most vital in American literature today, Simic and Strand have done an invaluable job. This is an anthology in which discoveries will be made, in which there are poems and fables that will astonish and delight. It is also an anthology which, because of its clearly polemical nature, will stimulate controversy. Another Republic will add richly to the fabric of ideas.”

Boy Soldiers of the Great War: Their Own Stories for the First Time by Richard van Emden (£19.50)Publisher: Headline — 2005Binding: Hardback [ISBN: 075531302X]Condition: Near Fine — in Near Fine Dustwrapper.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “At the outbreak of the First World War, boys as young as thirteen were caught up in an overwhelming tide of patriotism and, in huge numbers, cheerfully joined up for active service. Between 1914 and 1918, the press, recruiting officers and the Government all contributed to the enlistment of thousands of under-age soldiers, in Britain and the Empire, despite an increasing pressure inside and outside Parliament to keep them at home. Many were to serve in the bloodiest battles of the war, such as ex-miner Dick Trafford, who took part in the Battle of Loos, and Frank Lindley, who, seeking to avenge his dead brother, went over the top on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Both were just sixteen. Some boys were unable to stand the strain of trench life and, often through the intervention of their parents, were finally sent home, while others, such as fifteen-year-old Jack Pouchot, won medals for gallantry or became highly efficient officers, such as Acting Captain Philip Lister and Second Lieutenant Reginald Battersby, both of whom were commissioned at fifteen and, a year later, fought in France.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". Finest Hour by Phil Craig; Tim Clayton; (£19.00)Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton — 1999Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Signed by the Author.[ISBN: 0340750413]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and the top corners of the boards with commensurate wear to the dust wrapper.Description: Signed by both authors on the title page - unverified and reflected as such in the lack of premium but the book carries promotional sticker to the upper panel. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Maps [1];

From the cover: “Sixty years ago, Europe lay at Hitler’s feet. Britain faced its darkest hour — outnumbered and friendless as the German army continued its advance. Defeat or capitulation seemed inevitable. But instead a legend was bom.

Taking its readers on a breath-taking journey from open lifeboats in Atlantic gales to the cockpits of burning fighter-planes, and through cities devastated by the Blitz, Finest Hour recreates the terror, the tragedy and the triumph of the Battle of Britain.

This powerful account of the events of 1940, is told through the voices, diaries, letters and memoirs of the men and women who lived, loved, fought and died during this terrible yet inspiring year. These searing personal testimonies, taken from over a hundred original interviews, are combined with a fresh and often controversial account of the elaborate political intrigues and betrayals of the period — the Royal Navy assault on the French fleet and America’s secret plans to cope with Britain’s defeat.

Finest Hour blends original historical research with the experiences of ordinary people in desperate times. Cutting through the nostalgic haze, this book enables readers to experience something of a time — still within common living memory — when a nation’s darkest hour became its finest.”

My Warriors and I: Among the Samburu of Northern Kenya by Roger Stoakley (£17.50)Publisher: Scriptmate Editions — 1998Binding: Paperback Signed by the Author.[ISBN: 0951376691]Condition: Near Fine.Description: Signed by the author on the title page — unverified and reflected as such in the lack of premium. Illustrated with photographs, in colour & black and white. From the cover: “Lturungen was crippled in childhood. A chance meeting brought Roger Stoakley into close contact with this young man and his people—one of the last warrior societies of Africa. Sharing their lifestyle he gained an insight into a remarkable way of life. His moving story of its struggle, bravery and holistic joy in a harsh landscape, is also explicit about a small boy’s circumcision ceremony, and follows new young warriors through the tough Ceremony Of The Arrows. The Samburu people occupy the parched lands of northern Kenya, still the scene of tribal warfare and subject to tight security. Fiercely independent pastoral-ists, they are scornful of Western culture, and have remained relatively unaffected by civilisation. Lturungen came to England for three months while he underwent an operation on his foot. Dressed in warrior clothes, he became a celebrity among local schoolchildren. The author is the former County Librarian of Somerset.”Notes: Size: C Format (8½" x 5¼"). 201 pages. Association Football in Victorian England: A History of the Game from 1863 to 1900 by Philip Gibbons (£17.00)Publisher: Leicestershire: Upfront Publishing — 2002Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 1844260356]Condition: Very Good. Description: 2nd printing. [First Published: Minverva Press, 2001] Illustrated by way of: Appendices [4]; Black & White Photographs; Tables;

From the cover: “Prior to the 1870s, Association Football tended to be enjoyed as a form of exercise at public schools or a game between friends in a local park. However, with the administrative skills of the likes of Charles Alcock, Francis Marindin, Arthur Kinnaird and William McGregor, the game grew to such an extent that it became an important part in the lives of both players and spectators as the century reached its end.

The history of the early clubs, international games, as well as the growth of the professional clubs, are all encompassed in this book, including the likes of Aston Villa, Manchester United and Liverpool, when they started out as struggling little clubs.”

Italy by Herbert Ypma (£15.50)Publisher: Thames & Hudson — 2002Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0500283478]Condition: Near Fine.Description: Illustrated with colour photographs. From the cover: “For this new volume of Hip Hotels, Herbert Ypma has ventured far beyond the rolling hills of Tuscany, the postcard-perfect Amalfi Coast, or the Grand Tour destinations of Venice, Florence and Rome, to introduce real discoveries in under-explored regions like Puglia, Basilicata and Le Marche. You might be inspired to visit the utterly refined Hotel Raya on the Aeolian island of Panarea, from whose all-white terraces you can watch the volcano of Stromboli spurt fiery lava into the night skies. At the opposite end of the country, in the ultra-stylish ski town of Cortina d’Ampezzo, is Hotel de la Poste, run today by the same family as when Hemingway used to drive up from Venice in the early 1930s. Or if you prefer the beach life and night life of the Adriatic Coast, then fashion designer Alberta Ferretti’s Carducci 76 makes a superslick base. Many hotels are a complete surprise: ancient cave-dwellings in the eroded rocky landscape of Basilicata, or the trulli of Puglia, centuries-old igloo-like constructions with conical slate roofs. And whether cave, abbey, olive mill, fishing hut or barefoot beachside palazzo, every one of these unique hotels is true to its locale in architecture, design and gastronomy.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 8". Its recognized place among the very best of English diaries has been gained by special qualities. It is the work of a man with a watchful eye and a clear style — Kilvert has the uncommon gift of making one see vividly what he describes. His detailed picture of life in the English countryside in mid-Victorian times is unmatched, and every sentence he writes helps to build up a self-portrait so personal and intimate that one gets to know him like a friend.”Notes: Size: 10¼" x 7¾". 288 pages. The oldest of these men is 109, the youngest 104. In their own words they describe the extraordinary changes that have occurred during their lifetimes. Born in the reign of Queen Victoria, all have lived as adults through the Depression, the Second World War and the Millennium. But for these men, the Great War was the defining period of their lives. Some of them, mere boys at the outbreak, lied about their ages to join up. They saw action in the trenches, at sea and in the fledgling air services.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". Millennium: Towards Tomorrow's Society by Francis Kinsman (£12.50)Publisher: W. H. Allen — 1990Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0491037449]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper at the head of the spine otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: From the cover: “At the time of publication there are ten years to go before the year 2000.

Our society is divided into three groupings conveniently labelled agrarian, industrial and post-industrial. Each group reflects different values. The agricultural upholds yesterday’s beliefs in stability, changelessness and dependency; the industrial subscribes to economic growth, competitiveness, materialism and independence; whilst the post-industrial group is moving towards self-development, flexibility, protectiveness and inter-dependence as exemplified by the current Green revolution.

As we move towards the second millennium AD, these groups seem to be pulling against each other. We shall all have to decide which we want to belong to, irrespective of age, class, gender and region. But can our warring groupings collaborate to create a better society in the 21st century? Will the powerful business and political interests offer a lead in bringing them together? What can each of us do to make the next century a better place to live in and a hope for the future? These are tomorrow’s questions.

In this controversial and urgent discussion about the make up of our present and future society, Francis Kinsman forces us to face hard and unpalatable truths about what the human race must do if it is to survive into true adulthood.”
