Swimming with Dr Johnson and Mrs Thrale: Sport, Health and Exercise in Eighteenth-Century England by Julia Allen (£20.50)Publisher: Cambridge: The Lutterworth Press — 2012Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 9780718892760]Condition: Very Good. Description: First in this, paperback, edition. Illustrated by way of: Portraits; Black & White Plates; Black & White Drawings;

From the cover: “In this well researched and highly readable exploration of the history of British sport, Julia Allen shows that our nation’s obsession with sport is no new phenomenon. Drawing extensively on contemporary writings, reports and journals, Allen introduces Dr Johnson and Mrs Thrale while exploring the medical theories upon which eighteenth-century notions about exercise were based. The role of the physician, the work of the surgeon, the social context in which exercise was held and an in-depth description of the state of sport at the time are given including the rules, specific health benefits and whether women were permitted to join in.

Casting a historian’s eye over swimming, dancing, running, boxing, riding and skating as well as providing biographies of those who took part, this book promises to keep alive the love of sport long after the buzz of the Olympics has died down.”

Obsession: Psychic Forces and Evil in the Causation of Disease by Arthur Guirdham (£19.00)Publisher: London: Neville Spearman — 1972Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0854352716]Condition: Very Good — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper. Leans slightly. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: From the cover: “This book is a new approach to the understanding of neurotic disease. In the past the latter has been the subject of much heavy theorising. To the author, a consultant psychiatrist of forty years standing, the explanation is more fundamental and essentially simpler. Many of those who reveal obsessional symptoms, which are best exemplified by the pointless repetition of simple actions like turning off bath taps, are suffering from repression of their psychic gifts.

Obsessional states are a direct protective reflex following the perception of evil. This is first revealed in the night terrors and involuntary tics of childhood. The victims of obsessional states are often markedly psychic. Many are clairvoyant and telepathic. Their obsessional tendencies are related to the repression of these gifts. A number have far memory back to, and preceding, birth.

There are two central themes in this book. The first is that the obsessional patient is two persons in one, that he is, on the one hand, a mystic with psychic gifts and, on the other, an exponent of orthodoxy with ritualistic tendencies. The latter are a mask and an atonement for his psychic endowments. He combines in one personality the roles of persecuted heretic and inquisitor, of gifted mystic and repressive priest.

Dr Guirdham’s second major theme is that, in the obsessional, the battle between good and evil is being fought out at the conscious level. Each obsessional represents an armageddon in miniature. He reflects in his own soul the ultimate battle in the Cosmos between the forces of good and evil.”

The Human Factor in Aircraft Accidents by David Beaty (£19.00)Publisher: London: The Scientific Book Club — 1969Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded. Bruised at the tail of the spine. Pages lightly age-tanned with heavier offset to the endpapers. Description: Illustrated by way of: Appendices [2]; Diagrams;

From the cover: “Although considerable progress has been made in increasing the reliability of airplanes, very little has been accomplished in reducing the element of human error in aircraft accidents.

So said the first International Civil Aviation Organisation’s first volume of accident reports seventeen years ago. But in the interim the view that human error accidents are inevitable has prevailed. It is this view that David Beaty attacks in The Human Factor in Aircraft Accidents. Investigating into an almost totally unexplored area, he has related aircraft accidents to known psychological concepts of fatigue, perception, laterality, conflict, frustration, learning and decision-taking.

This book takes a cool scientific look at the whole problem. Not at all sensational, but none the less of exciting interest, it tells the stories of aircraft accidents and interprets them in psychological terms. And at the same time, it suggests the prospect that, if psychological factors were properly investigated and better understood, a considerable cut would be effected in the now, rising aircraft accident rate.”

Yoga For You: A Step-by-step Guide to Yoga At Home For Everybody by Tara Fraser (£19.00)Publisher: Duncan Baird Publishers — 2001Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1903296102]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper pulled at the head of the upper panel otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs; Diagrams;

From the cover: “Yoga for You is a complete illustrated practical guide that reflects some of the most important developments in modern teaching — the release of pent-up stress from busy lives, the emphasis on physical comfort and safety (working within your own abilities rather than forcing yourself into demanding postures), and the holistic approach, which combines yoga with an appropriate lifestyle, especially with regard to diet and meditation.

Whatever your level of fitness and flexibility, Yoga for You is designed to meet your needs — whether you are a complete beginner or already have experience from classes.

More than 200 step-by-step colour photographs take you through the essential asanas (postures) and sequences. The author explains the essentials in plain, simple language. Special "boxes" suggest how beginners can adapt the classic postures to make them easier to perform — while more experienced students are shown how to progress to more challenging asanas as they build up their skills.

The practical core of the book is complemented by coverage of yoga’s traditional physiological, philosophical and spiritual context, and its roots in ancient India. The idea that the body has its own energy pathways and centres in the form of nadis and chakras is explored in a way that is clear and inspiring to Western readers.

Specific topics addressed include: the different types of yoga; finding and working with a teacher; how to start practising yoga at home; posture sequences; doing yoga with a partner; and learning to meditate.

Whatever your lifestyle, time pressures, beliefs, or levels of flexibility and fitness, Yoga for You takes you step by step along the path to inner and outer calm.”

The Thinking Man's Guide to Golf: The Common-sense Way to Improve Your Game by Colin Montgomerie (£14.50)Publisher: Orion — 2003Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0752853724]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Price Clipped. Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “Colin Montgomerie has always said that he could save an amateur golfer five or six shots a round if he were able to caddie for them; and that is what he sets out to achieve within the pages of his first instructional book. The seven-time European Tour number one is one of the world’s most accomplished golfers, and in The Thinking Man’s Guide to Golf he uses his own unique common-sense approach in order to shave shots from your score.

Monty sets out to give the reader an A — Z guide on how to improve your game. Starting with the basics, he goes on to talk about curing common faults, improving your short game, choosing the right equipment and all other aspects of the Royal & Ancient game, including:

  • The four key swing thoughts that have made Monty the golfer he is.
  • How to cure your slice and hook.
  • The best way to learn how to shape your shots.
  • Why using a belly putter maximises your chances of holing more putts.
  • How to hit the speciality shots that make the top Tour professionals so deadly around the greens.
  • How to get the most from your practice sessions.
  • Why improved fitness can help your game.
Most crucially, within the extended chapter dedicated to playing smart golf, Monty teaches you the tricks that will enable you to reduce your scores without changing your swing. He understands that the average amateur cannot spend as much time practising as the Tour professionals, which is why he puts so much emphasis on the best ways to improve your course maintenance. The advice is simple, and is presented in a clear and concise manner that golfers of all standards can learn from. What’s more, it has also been proven to work.”

It is classified as a functional disorder because it can be neither detected through standard medical testing nor linked to any specific structural or biochemical cause. Therefore, IBS is diagnosed only through the presence of symptoms such as pain and cramps, gas and bloating, diarrhoea, or constipation. Such symptoms can be extremely debilitating, making IBS a leading cause of worker absenteeism, second only to the common cold. Irritable bowel syndrome is also referred to as spastic colon, mucous colitis, spastic colitis, nervous stomach, or irritable colon. Although it is diagnosed most frequently in women from early adulthood to midlife, anyone can have IBS, including children. All sufferers seem to experience a common frustration because symptoms are frequently embarrassing and seem to arise without warning. Moreover, the search for a solution can be an anxious, disheartening experience that concludes with a vague diagnosis and a trial-and-error approach to treatment. In The Irritable Bowel Syndrome Sourcebook, you will learn: About the normal functioning of the gastrointestinal tract; How the symptoms of IBS are diagnosed and misdiagnosed; How to identify your own dietary and environmental triggers for IBS, including food allergies and food sensitivity; How to manage IBS triggers through food restriction plans and changes in your “eating lifestyle”; How to identify and manage the stress and depression that can also trigger IBS; The link between IBS and other conditions, such as fibromyalgia, nonulcer dyspepsia, acute and bacterial gastroenteritis, and globus hystericus; The role that alcohol abuse or dependence plays in the syndrome; Alternative therapies, including herbal medicine, meditation, acupuncture, biofeedback, hypnosis, and creative visualization.”Notes: Size: 9" x 6". 166 pages. He is a household name, an eccentric, and one of the most loved and respected characters in world cricket. Here at last is his autobiography. The most famous cricket umpire of them all, Dickie has done that difficult job more skilfully than anyone else. Moreover he has done it in his idiosyncratic style and with the infectious humour which has endeared him to millions throughout the world, transcending his sport. Fiercely proud of his background as a Yorkshire miner’s son, his story follows his youth in Barnsley, his early days as a cricketer, through to his career as an umpire and his experiences of the international scene, all told with total honesty by this very private person. Throughout his life he has courted both controversy and comedy. This book is a mixture of forthright views on the game and those involved in it, compelling accounts of what it is like behind the scenes in cricket at the highest level, and hilarious stories, for which Dickie is so well known.”Notes: Foreword or introduction by Michael Parkinson.
