Pattern Design for Torchon Lace by Jane Atkinson (£68.00)Publisher: B. T. Batsford — 1987Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0713452420]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight otherwise. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs [67]; Colour Photographs [7]; Black & White Drawings [117];

From the cover: “Many lacemakers are keen to design for themselves, but uncertain how to get started. This book will encourage those who already have some lacemaking experience to create new Torchon patterns, providing a wealth of ideas to develop this traditional technique.

Simple exercises and examples are expanded through the use of unusual grids and colour combinations, using both the familiar and more unexpected threads. Over 60 new patterns are included, and over 180 illustrations. Jane Atkinson provides exciting new sources for design, including Art Deco, Japanese, Russian, Pueblo, African and Celtic patterns, and inspiration drawn from anything and everything from electrical circuits to Venetian glass.

Good design needs the right materials and control of technique. The author sets out basic pattern skills in an orderly format, which allows each reader to learn at her own pace. Every pattern is intended to be fully workable, and can be made into anything from household linens to luxurious dress trimmings.”

V-Bombers: Vulcan, Victor and Valiant - Britain's Airborne Nuclear Deterrent by Tim Laming (£33.00)Publisher: Patrick Stephens Limited — 1997Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1852605294]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Diagrams;

From the cover: “Vulcan, Victor and Valiant — three of the most distinctive and impressive aircraft ever to have been produced in Great Britain. Immensely capable, each of these bombers was designed with one objective in mind — to deliver nuclear bombs into the heart of the Soviet Union. Futuristic in appearance, they were developed less than five years after the end of the Second World War, when Britain was secretly preparing her first atomic weapons.

A huge fleet of V-bombers was maintained in top condition, ready to fly their deadly missions with little advance warning. Continual exercises ensured the crews were fully trained for a task which their very existence and readiness was intended to avoid. Had they gone to war, it would have been unlikely that Britain would have survived in a recognisable form by the time of their return. Their raison d’être was deterrence, and history has shown how successful this policy was. The full story is told in detail, including how and why the V-force was created, through to its demise.

Following the transfer of Britain’s nuclear deterrent from the RAF to the Royal Navy, the Vulcan and Victor remained in RAF service. Although, thankfully, neither type was ever called upon to perform its primary role, the Vulcan was at the forefront of Britain’s liberation of the Falkland Islands in 1982. A lone aircraft carried out the longest range bombing mission in history to disable the islands’ only runway. In the Gulf War of 1991 Victor tankers carried out countless refuelling missions throughout the conflict.

Today, relics of the V-force are scattered throughout the UK in the form of abandoned airfields, former bomb stores and missile sites, and a handful of aircraft which have survived as museum exhibits. Tim Laming is an experienced aviation writer and photographer with several books to his credit. He counts himself lucky to have flown as a crew member in many combat aircraft, from the Phantom and Harrier to the Jaguar, Lightning, Buccaneer and Hornet. He lives in Sheffield.”

These all but forgotten skills have never

really left us, and can be mastered once again by working with traditional exercises and techniques. This book is based on the truths of natural magic, that honour Nature and her cycles, and also on the individual powers of insight and farseeing that we all have within us.

Learn how to draw power from the cycles of the moon, creation myths and astrology. How, by matching our hectic lives with more ancient cycles, we can create oases of calm and peace through simple exercises that awaken the planets’ subtle energies. Practical Magic offers an in depth look at the traditions of rite and ritual, the cyclical nature of society’s celebrations and practical advice on devising new workings for all occasions. As well as instructions on such matters as making incense or a talisman, learning to dowse and dedicate an altar, there are also more advanced levels of magic work — enhancing your psychic abilities, successful astral travel, creative visualization and inner sight.

This book will help you to learn that by recreating a place of inner peace our own forgotten skills and unknown abilities can be brought to the surf ace to bring enlightenment, power and joy.”

At What Cost? by Rachel Morris; Luke Clements; (£19.50)Publisher: Policy Press — 2002Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 9781861344236]Condition: Very Good+.Description: From the introduction: “This book treads a dangerous line, concerned as it is with costs: the costs borne by the Travelling and non-Travelling communities as a consequence of the former having insufficient and inappropriate accommodation. The line is a dangerous one for many reasons, most obviously because it might suggest that social exclusion and human misery are amenable to a simple analysis of costs and benefits. A less obvious, but equally serious, danger is that which is inherent in all ‘quantification’ exercises of this nature — that by particularising the cost of everything, little or nothing of value is revealed. This study is based on research carried out between 1999 and 2001, including a survey of all of the local authorities in the United Kingdom. The survey focused on the costs that these authorities had incurred as a consequence of inadequate provision of accommodation for Gypsies and other Travellers.”.Notes: Size: Trade Paperback (9¼" x 6"). 158 pages. Dog Training and Behaviour by Geoff Grinham (£19.50)Publisher: The Crowood Press — 1994Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1852237511]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Slight ruffling at the top edge of the dust wrapper otherwise a very well presented copy.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “The basis of all successful dog training must be an understanding of canine psychology and behaviour. In this book this vast and frequently misunderstood subject is tackled in a clear and accessible way, enabling anyone to grasp the essentials and use them to lay the foundations for a long-lasting, mutually satisfactory human/canine partnership.

The critical development periods of the puppy and the adolescent dog, establishment of rank order, canine language and communication, and the variables of temperament and disposition are explored before the author sets out in detail a comprehensive, easy-to-follow training programme. Working logically and progressively through each stage of the dog’s learning process, the handler is shown how to teach and consolidate each lesson, from the basics of Sit, Heel and Come, to the more advanced Search and Scent Discrimination exercises. Finally there are chapters dealing with individual behavioural problems, which explain how it is possible to retrain the errant dog and prevent future regression. Throughout, the practical day-to-day relevance of the various training exercises is emphasized, and the process by which mutual trust and understanding are achieved is made clear. Thus the book is more than a training manual; it is a complete guide to getting the most out of your partnership with your dog.

Illustrated throughout with black and white photographs and original line-drawings, Dog Training and Behaviour is both a practical step-by-step guidebook and a valuable source of reference for all dog owners.”

Developing Your Latent Powers: Thirty Practical Steps to Spiritual Satisfaction by Frederick R. [Robert] Gould (£18.00)Publisher: Robert B. Luce Co. Inc. — 1976Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good+ — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Heavily faded at the spine. Price Clipped. Leans. Previous owners' inscription to the pastedown. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: From the cover: “Developing Your Latent Powers is a practical approach to a way of life that is appealing more and more in the Western World today. It is a statement of a philosophy of life that synthesises elements of Hinduist and Buddhist thought with guidance to those who wish to be less tied to the mechanistic type of life and are aiming at greater spiritual satisfaction. It blends Eastern wisdom with Western knowledge, always avoiding the obfuscation which is common to both.

Readers are told quite frankly of the difficulties that face them in the search for enlightenment, and the exercises, always basic, will help students to attain a positive state of mind: a poise and a glad philosophy. The way of thought and the exercises Frederick Gould describes are not unfamiliar to many people in the West now that the meditative form of philosophic occultism is becoming increasingly popular. Most writing on the subject, though, is hardly easy reading.

Frederick Gould, who describes himself as a ‘humble student’, writes with long experience as a teacher, and the lucidity of his style makes the book readable without tears. He believes the kind of thinking his course advocates is urgently needed in a purposeless age that is the headache following on a night of materialist intoxication — one that has reduced man to servitude to a machine in material life and to the status of machine itself in his spiritual one. But he believes there is another path, another outlook, which he has tested and which has illumined his own life.”

The Efficiency Experts: An Impartial Survey of Management Consultancy by Laura Tatham (£18.00)Publisher: Business Publications — 1964Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the edges, slightly tanned. A nice copy of a not-so-common title.Description: From the cover: “Are management consultants the answer to a businessman’s prayer? Or are they unprincipled rogues who, for an exorbitant fee, tell a company nothing it does not already know and saddle it with a lot of elaborate, unnecessary and expensive procedures?

To answer these extreme questions and many more between, Laura Tatham has obtained first-hand evidence from dozens of consultants and from as many clients, both satisfied and dissatisfied. This book is the result of her inquiries.

An impartial survey, The Efficiency Experts examines in detail what management consultants are, how they work and what they set out to accomplish. It suggests ways in which the businessman can make best use of consultants, and how he can assess whether or not a firm is likely to do a good job. A number of case histories describe both successful and unsuccessful consulting assignments.”

Gently bruised at the head of the spine and top corners with commensurate ruffling to the dust wrapper.Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs; Diagrams;

From the cover: “Jumping is simple. It is we as riders who often make it complicated and difficult for both us and our horses. If we could learn not to interfere to the detriment of the basic requirements of jumping — rhythm, balance and impulsion — then it would be easy, for the same principles apply to jumping any type offence correctly, whether in show-jumping, cross-country or steeplechasing, whatever the pace. By teaching the techniques of jumping — how the horse actually jumps — so that you understand what is required of the rider, this book will help you to achieve the best result when jumping all different types of fence. Not only does it discuss, with the aid of numerous illustrations, the correct way to tackle all types of show-jumping and cross-country fence, from triple bars to ditches and coffins, but it also covers the vital ingredients of correct flat work, exercises to improve your horse’s natural jump, warming up, course-walking, the influence of roads and tracks, how to judge speed and pace and how to ride a steeplechase course, and gives answers to many problems encountered in jumping. This book will be of value to all riders who jump at any level of enjoyment or competition, whether at Pony Club or Riding Club level, out hunting, or whether the ultimate goal is to complete a three-day event with no jumping penalties.”

The Complete Art of Printing and Enlarging by Dr. O. R. Croy (£13.00)Publisher: Focal Press — 1979Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0240447557]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the edges with a stain to the foot of the reverse and minor splits at the lower corners.Description: 15th Impression, 3rd Edition. [First Edition: 1950] Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “THIS IS THE FIFTEENTH PRINTING of O. R. Croy’s most popular book — which is in its third edition and something of a classic in many languages.

There have been few photographers blessed with such unusual gifts, who have amassed so much varied experience as O. R. Croy did, before he died in 1977.

As the son of a painter he grew up with an artist’s tools. At university he read photographic chemistry to become first a research worker and then a teacher in his own right. Yet somehow this still left him with time for his hobby, conjuring.

His interest in art, his scientific training, his ability to teach and his skilful hands made him a very exceptional sort of photographer. He continuously broke new ground both by using the camera as a tool for serving science and by creating unusual pictures just for the fun of it. His macro-photographic illustrations of natural history and his pictorial jokes in American and Continental magazines thrust into many fields and established new techniques.

Of his books on photography this one is the most methodical and detailed in covering that decisive last phase of photographic work — the finished print — which in the end speaks for every photographer, amateur and professional, beginner and advanced alike.

On how to make prints — ordinary prints and elaborately controlled prints, straightforward prints and very tricky prints—there is such a wealth of technical knowledge and personal experience that you will be unlikely to find it between the covers of any other single volume.

It is like an encyclopaedic cookery book — you can follow its recipes without ever having tried your hand at them before and you will find new ideas, novel methods and exciting possibilities suggested by them, however wide your own experience may be.

And how matter of fact, easily understood and readable it all is! Croy had the gift of really good teachers of never using more words than necessary and never forgetting any that matter. There is a message and a lesson in every sentence he writes. And there is practical evidence in every picture he shows.

A glance at his photographs and his diagrams is the best proof that he knows what he is talking about. They are all his own in this book.”

Nothing Is Impossible with God by Kathryn Kuhlman (£11.50)Publisher: Prentice-Hall — 1974Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0136252931]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with a crease to the foot of the upper panel. Text complete, clean and tight but now somewhat age-tanned and a touch musty.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “Like Kathryn Kuhlman’s earlier accounts of her ministry this book is composed of the first-person accounts of men and women whose lives were changed during Miss Kuhlman’s Miracle Services. Patients with terminal cancer, children with leukaemia and birth defects; victims of arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and spinal disintegration — these are only a few of the countless thousands who have been touched by God’s healing power in the midst of a crowded auditorium. Miss Kuhlman calls out their locations and bids them “Stand and accept your healing”. And before the eyes of friends and relatives, individuals arise from wheel-chairs and stretchers, born anew in both mind and body. Incredible? And yet, this book presents the stories of twenty people who were considered hopeless by medical science and who later returned, cured, to amaze their own doctors — and live new, utterly joyful lives, transformed by their new-found faith.”Notes: Size: 8½" x 5½". Responsibility for organizing so large a part of the nation’s thrift has long subjected the work of the Industrial Life Offices to the test of public debate, in and out of Parliament. Blessings in Disguise by Alec Guinness (£9.50)Publisher: Hamish Hamilton — 1985Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0241006813]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper with short nicks to the head of the spine. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “My birth certificate registers me as Alec Guinness de Cuffe, born in Marylebone, London, 2nd April 1914; my father’s name is left a speculative blank. The mystery has never been solved, though Alec Guinness would later be the recipient of certain intriguing theories. But, in any case, Blessings in Disguise is not an autobiography which tells all, an exercise in egomania as purveyed by so many actors and actresses. What can be said, without the faintest chance of contradiction, is that it is one of the wittiest, most entertaining memoirs to come out of the theatre in many a long day.

Here are brilliant pen portraits of Ralph Richardson, Edith Evans, Sybil Thorndike and Lewis Casson, Tyrone Guthrie, and John Gielgud; and of two less well remembered but once greatly revered figures, Ernest Milton and Martita Hunt. Edith Sitwell presides at the Sesame Club and is reconciled to the Roman Catholic Church (Evelyn Waugh wore black and white dog-tooth tweeds, a red tie, and a boater from which streamed red and blue ribbons). Vivien Leigh exercises her charms on a susceptible admiral in North Africa. Ernest Hemingway is less than overwhelmed by Noel Coward. Lilian Baylis demonstrates her renowned commercial sense. Nellie Wallace sends a huge bunch of yellow roses to a sick boy (the boy was Alec Guinness, who was totally enchanted by her mixture of innuendo and wicked mime).

And here too is Alec Guinness himself, on his film career, on his religious beliefs, on his war experiences (the relevant chapter is entitled ‘Damage to the Allied Cause’ and one can see why), writing always with modesty, a perfect sense of timing, a lack of malice, and above all humour mixed with humanity. It is a remarkable, and hilarious, combination..”

PASCAL for Science and Engineering by James J. McGregor & Alan H. Watt (£9.50)Publisher: Pitman — 1983Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0273018892]Condition: Very Good. Description: First in this, paperback, edition.

From the cover: “Every scientist and engineer must obtain some familiarity with the use of computers, and their applications to his/her subject area. This book teaches the reader how to write programs in Pascal, which scientists and engineers have found increasingly valuable since the advent of the microcomputer: apart from the advantages of readability and error protection, programs written in Pascal are efficient.

The authors present a genuinely introductory text for beginners. They avoid unnecessary jargon, and do not present more information than is absolutely necessary about the internal operation of the computer. They introduce the elementary techniques by means of examples, and encourage the reader to develop a good programming style by attempting the exercises set in each chapter.

The book is written in two parts. The first part is a self-contained introduction to Pascal. The second part examines the computer applications that are of interest to the scientist and engineer.”
