Measurement of Responsibility: A Study of Work, Payment and Individual Capacity by Elliott Jaques (£33.00)Publisher: Tavistock Publications — 1956Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with several short tears, a little loss at the spine ends and a 1" closed tear to the head of the upper panel. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Small name sticker to the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned.Description: From the cover: “THE MEASUREMENT OF RESPONSIBILITY presents perhaps the most funda mental approach yet achieved to the recurring individual and social stresses which disturb the industrial scene. Its theme is that one of the central factors underlying these disturbances is the absence of any objective and agreed method of assessing the re sponsibility carried by individuals at their work.

In the course of practical work by the author in collaboration with members of the Glacier Metal Com pany (an engineering concern), a re definition of the problem has emerged. What is experienced by individuals as level or weight or size of responsi bility has been observed to be con nected solely with the discretion they are required to exercise in doing their work. It has furthermore been dis covered that level of responsibility can be measured objectively and pre cisely by the maximum span of time during which an individual is expected to exercise discretion on his own account until his use of discretion is subjected to review.

By using this measurement — which he terms the time-span of discretion — Dr. Jaques has noted that individuals carrying the same maximum time-span in their work demand—quite independently — as a fair and just return for their work, precisely the same earnings and the same status, regardless of the type of work con cerned. He concludes from these findings that an unrecognized wage and salary structure is operated in tuitively in industry. But because it is unrecognized, departures from it are likely. And it is precisely such de partures which lead to trouble.

In the light of his findings, the author re-examines the meaning of work, of payment for work, and of the capacity of individuals to exercise discretion and discharge responsibility.

The methods described, and the results already obtained from their use, may indicate a route towards the resolution of some aspects of the industrial unrest and individual dis satisfaction with work which are such a crippling feature of modern industrial life. The book, in style as well as in content, is intended for economists, sociologists, political scientists, psychologists, and other social scientists — as well as industrial ists, trade unionists, government officials, and other administrators who are concerned with these problems.”

Swimming with Dr Johnson and Mrs Thrale: Sport, Health and Exercise in Eighteenth-Century England by Julia Allen (£20.50)Publisher: Cambridge: The Lutterworth Press — 2012Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 9780718892760]Condition: Very Good. Description: First in this, paperback, edition. Illustrated by way of: Portraits; Black & White Plates; Black & White Drawings;

From the cover: “In this well researched and highly readable exploration of the history of British sport, Julia Allen shows that our nation’s obsession with sport is no new phenomenon. Drawing extensively on contemporary writings, reports and journals, Allen introduces Dr Johnson and Mrs Thrale while exploring the medical theories upon which eighteenth-century notions about exercise were based. The role of the physician, the work of the surgeon, the social context in which exercise was held and an in-depth description of the state of sport at the time are given including the rules, specific health benefits and whether women were permitted to join in.

Casting a historian’s eye over swimming, dancing, running, boxing, riding and skating as well as providing biographies of those who took part, this book promises to keep alive the love of sport long after the buzz of the Olympics has died down.”

Silks, Soaks and Certainties by Bob Butchers (£19.50)Publisher: Blenheim Press — 2008Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 9781906302047]Condition: Very Good+.Description: First in this edition. Illustrated with B&W photographs. From the cover; “This light-hearted look at the racing scene will appeal to all who are racing ‘buffs’ and many who are not. The tale of a family whose links with racing have spanned more than a century is packed with many wonderfully evocative accounts of incidents and characters of yesteryear. Some of the activities would, to say the least, be frowned on today. Bob was the original Newsboy on the Daily Mirror and filled that post with distinction for almost 39 years. This, coupled with his family background, gave him a deep knowledge of what went on behind the scenes in racing and have provided him with a fund of stories which he shares with us in this book.”Notes: Size: Trade Paperback (9¼" x 6"). 311 pages. Yoga For You: A Step-by-step Guide to Yoga At Home For Everybody by Tara Fraser (£19.00)Publisher: Duncan Baird Publishers — 2001Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1903296102]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges. Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs; Diagrams;

From the cover: “Yoga for You is a complete illustrated practical guide that reflects some of the most important developments in modern teaching — the release of pent-up stress from busy lives, the emphasis on physical comfort and safety (working within your own abilities rather than forcing yourself into demanding postures), and the holistic approach, which combines yoga with an appropriate lifestyle, especially with regard to diet and meditation.

Whatever your level of fitness and flexibility, Yoga for You is designed to meet your needs — whether you are a complete beginner or already have experience from classes.

More than 200 step-by-step colour photographs take you through the essential asanas (postures) and sequences. The author explains the essentials in plain, simple language. Special “boxes” suggest how beginners can adapt the classic postures to make them easier to perform — while more experienced students are shown how to progress to more challenging asanas as they build up their skills.

The practical core of the book is complemented by coverage of yoga’s traditional physiological, philosophical and spiritual context, and its roots in ancient India. The idea that the body has its own energy pathways and centres in the form of nadis and chakras is explored in a way that is clear and inspiring to Western readers.

Specific topics addressed include: the different types of yoga; finding and working with a teacher; how to start practising yoga at home; posture sequences; doing yoga with a partner; and learning to meditate.

Whatever your lifestyle, time pressures, beliefs, or levels of flexibility and fitness, Yoga for You takes you step by step along the path to inner and outer calm.”

Fate and Prediction: An Historical Compendium of Astrology Palmistry and Tarot by Fred Gettings (£18.50)Publisher: Ferndale — 1980Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Gently faded at the spine. Book plate to the pastedown. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs [775]; Facsimiles; Colour Photographs [125]; Diagrams; Maps;

From the cover: “This unique book is divided into three distinct sections containing comprehensive guides to the Zodiac, the Tarot and Palmistry, subjects that continue to exercise a profound fascination for millions of people.

Much of the current interest in the occult reaches little deeper than the horoscopes in popular newspapers and magazines, but beneath mere curiosity lies a deep and persistent urge to make sense of man’s life and his relation to the universe.

Modern science, though a valuable tool in understanding the physical world, has failed to satisfy this urge: it is still unable to unravel the depths of man’s subconscious or reveal the forces that shape his character.

All those willing to go beyond the popular image of horoscopes, will find here a fresh approach to traditional topics together with the essential balance of the historical perspective, will be fascinated by the unfolding of the mysteries of astrological science.

Superb colour plates appear throughout, with hundreds of black and white illustrations..”

How I Play Golf by Tiger Woods with the editors of Golf Digest (£18.50)Publisher: Little, Brown & Co. — 2001Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0316643696]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Price Clipped. Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs [Some Fold-Out]; Diagrams;

From the cover: “The youngest Masters champion ever. The first person since 1953 to win three majors in one year. The fifth — and youngest — golfer to complete a career grand slam. There is, simply, no one who can match the achievements of Tiger Woods. He will win more majors than Arnold Palmer and me combined, claimed Jack Nicklaus and, the frightening thing is, he’s probably right. For Tiger Woods is more than just the best golfer in the world today: he is the most complete player of his era.

Now, in How I Play Golf, Tiger allows us the inside track into his tactics and techniques, and explains what makes his golf ‘tick’. Whether you are an absolute beginner, an enthusiastic amateur, or one of Tiger’s fellow professionals, this book is the essential guide to how to understand — and improve — your game.

Tiger takes his game apart in the same way as he does the field on the back nine on a championship Sunday, he starts where other golfing books end: on the putting green. From there he moves to building a swing to last, sand play, iron play, fairway woods and the driver. There are also chapters on golf psychology, how to break those bad habits and Tiger’s suggested diet and exercise routines.

Beautifully designed and lavishly illustrated, Have I Play Golf is the ultimate golf book from the greatest golfer in the world. From sorting out your swing plane to bouncing the ball off the face of your sand wedge (and looking cool doing it), Tiger tells you everything you need to know to make you a better golfer.”

From the cover: “Prior to the 1870s, Association Football tended to be enjoyed as a form of exercise at public schools or a game between friends in a local park. However, with the administrative skills of the likes of Charles Alcock, Francis Marindin, Arthur Kinnaird and William McGregor, the game grew to such an extent that it became an important part in the lives of both players and spectators as the century reached its end.

The history of the early clubs, international games, as well as the growth of the professional clubs, are all encompassed in this book, including the likes of Aston Villa, Manchester United and Liverpool, when they started out as struggling little clubs.”

Francis Warner's Poetry: A Critical Assessment by Glyn Pursglove (£11.50)Publisher: Colin Smythe — 1988Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0861402715]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges.Description: From the cover: “The poetry of Francis Warner is unlike that of any of his contemporaries in its blend of passion and scholarship. It is the work of a mind steeped in the great traditions of poetry — work that is learned and allusive, but simultaneously intense in its lyricism.

Glyn Pursglove, author of an earlier study of Warner’s plays Francis Warner and Tradition, provides a detailed account of this fascinating body of work, demon strating both its indebtedness to tradition and its profound originality. In a manner both scholarly and sensitive he clarifies the complex craftsmanship of Warner’s major poems and demonstrates the extraordinary formal inventiveness which characterizes so much of his work.

Central to Francis Warner’s achieve ment as a lyrical poet are several remarkable sequences of love poems. These are here afforded a poem-by-poem examination so that readers will find their pleasure in them enhanced by these meticulous and lively studies.

For all his attention to the detail of the poems, Glyn Pursglove does not neglect the larger themes that give continuity to Warner’s work. The reaffirmation of biblical and classical concepts of love — not just as a scholarly exercise but felt in the blood — is at the heart of all of his work as a poet and as a dramatist. It was perhaps inevitable that a poet so steeped in the lyrical forms of the Renaissance (the canzone, the madrigal, and above all the sonnet) should eventually turn his atten tion to Verse Drama. This study closes fittingly with two lengthy chapters de voted to Warner’s verse plays Moving Reflections and Living Creation, theatrical and poetic explorations of love and creativity set in the age of the Gospels, and Renaissance Florence.”

Natural Remedies for Allergies by Paul Morgan (£10.50)Publisher: Parragon — 1998Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0752525379]Condition: Very Good - in Very Good DJ. DJ slightly ruffled at the edges.Description: From the cover: “Allergies have become something of an obsession in the 1990s: press reports talk of ‘an allergy to life’; and scientists tell that the extraordinary increase in allergy cases over the last century can be put down to environmental pollution as a result of the increasing industrialization of society. This book shows allergy sufferers that there are other ways to reduce the risk of provoking an allergic response and of treating one if it occurs. First, it cuts through the jargon, using clear no-nonsense language to explain what allergies are and what causes them, before discussing the pros and cons of conventional medical treatment. Then it discusses the various types of allergy, from food allergies to allergic skin conditions, with cross-references to the various types of natural treatment that follow. Next the book shows how natural remedies — from herbal medicines, elimination diets and homeopathy to stress-management techniques — can help by both alleviating the symptoms of an allergic response and prevent one from occurring.”Notes: Size: 9¾" x 7". The Christian Belief in God: In Relation to Religion and Philosophy by Alfred E. [Ernest] Garvie (£10.50)Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton — UndatedBinding: Hardback Condition: Poor. A copy for reading rather than admiring, generally shabby but text complete and acceptable. Heavily faded at the spine. Tanning to the blanks. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned.Description: Presumed 1st Edition circa 1933. From the preface: “This volume is the companion to the two books already published, The Christian Doctrine of the Godhead (1925) and The Christian Ideal for Human Society (1930). These dealt with Christian dogmatics and ethics; this deals with Christian apologetics. The best defence of the Christian faith and the Christian life is the exposition of the truth concerning them ; this is their apology. As I have conceived apologetics in this volume, its task is to relate the Christian religion to religions generally, as the affirmation of what truth they contain, and to relate this affirmation to man’s other personal interests and activities for such confirmation as these may offer. While faith is the organ of apprehension, appreciation, and acceptance of the object of religion — God, yet as an exercise of human personality it must not be isolated from, but related to, all that has value for man. These three volumes, of which the last in time should be regarded as the first in order, are an attempt at a Systematic, or what I prefer to call it, Constructive Theology, not common in the English language.”Notes: Size: 8¾" x 5¾". Blessings in Disguise by Alec Guinness (£9.50)Publisher: Hamish Hamilton — 1985Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0241006813]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper with short nicks to the head of the spine. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “My birth certificate registers me as Alec Guinness de Cuffe, born in Marylebone, London, 2nd April 1914; my father’s name is left a speculative blank. The mystery has never been solved, though Alec Guinness would later be the recipient of certain intriguing theories. But, in any case, Blessings in Disguise is not an autobiography which tells all, an exercise in egomania as purveyed by so many actors and actresses. What can be said, without the faintest chance of contradiction, is that it is one of the wittiest, most entertaining memoirs to come out of the theatre in many a long day.

Here are brilliant pen portraits of Ralph Richardson, Edith Evans, Sybil Thorndike and Lewis Casson, Tyrone Guthrie, and John Gielgud; and of two less well remembered but once greatly revered figures, Ernest Milton and Martita Hunt. Edith Sitwell presides at the Sesame Club and is reconciled to the Roman Catholic Church (Evelyn Waugh wore black and white dog-tooth tweeds, a red tie, and a boater from which streamed red and blue ribbons). Vivien Leigh exercises her charms on a susceptible admiral in North Africa. Ernest Hemingway is less than overwhelmed by Noel Coward. Lilian Baylis demonstrates her renowned commercial sense. Nellie Wallace sends a huge bunch of yellow roses to a sick boy (the boy was Alec Guinness, who was totally enchanted by her mixture of innuendo and wicked mime).

And here too is Alec Guinness himself, on his film career, on his religious beliefs, on his war experiences (the relevant chapter is entitled ‘Damage to the Allied Cause’ and one can see why), writing always with modesty, a perfect sense of timing, a lack of malice, and above all humour mixed with humanity. It is a remarkable, and hilarious, combination..”

Can Parliament Survive? by Christopher Hollis (£9.50)Publisher: Hollis & Carter — 1949Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good+ — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with fraying at the tail of the spine. Price Clipped. Leans. Edges of the text block lightly spotted with tanning to the endpapers and blanks. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: From the cover: “Christopher Hollis here develops the argument that the age of universal suffrage and parliamentary government is also proving to be the time when parliaments are losing their power. This is particularly the case where-ever Socialist parties, by nationalising successive sections of industry, place them under a managerial control.

This penetrating and stimulating study of what is really happening traces how party government and parliament became the central institution of the national life, and how to-day, so much of that life, because it is industrialised, is being organised outside of and away from parliament. Industry is increasingly passing under the control of centralised bureaucracy, only in the vaguest sense responsible to Parliament or the public. Even if parliamentary control was accepted as proper policy, Parliament to-day is far too congested with business to be able to exercise it properly.

Mr. Hollis examines sympathetically the various suggestions that have been made to relieve parliament and to keep alive democratic authority by the creation of an Industrial Parliament, whether as a third chamber or a body like the Assembly of the Church of England. He argues that the present House of Commons will function much better, be able to restore more private members’ time, and discuss more private members’ bills, in proportion as it is relieved of ‘the details of industrial legislation for which it is manifestly incompetent’.

Overshadowing all the proposals is the great issue, how to preserve any real and effective liberty under modern conditions, and on this too, Mr. Hollis, as those who know his writing will expect, comes to grips with the real difficulties, and has much that is invigorating and constructive to say.”

Dieting Makes You Fat: A Guide to Energy, Fitness and Health by Geoffrey Cannon; Hetty Einzig; (£9.50)Publisher: Century — 1983Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 071260118X]Condition: Very Good — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the edges. Leans. Top edge of the text block tanned. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned.Description: From the cover: “Most of us have been taught to believe that self-denial is the key to health, fitness and a firm figure; and that the bathroom scales are the judge of how successfully we manage it. The authors show that this is not simply wrong, but harmful.

They explain that the key is not how much you eat, but how quickly your body converts food to energy — the metabolic rate. The best way to lose excess fat is to speed up the metabolism by taking exercise; dieting slows metabolism and positively encourages the body to retain its excess flab. Hence the big eaters who stay thin and the little eaters who stay fat — as well as the many sufferers whose diets have led to anorexia, bingeing or hatred of their own bodies.

The first part of this book reveals the humbug and false promises of the diet industry. It goes on to make positive suggestions for a lifestyle based on sound science and commonsense, with particular reference to the nutritive value of different foods and the effects of different forms of exercise on the bodies of men and women. Guidelines that every able-bodied person can follow are included.

Dieting Makes You Fat is a catchy title behind which lies an important message properly supported by biomedical research and leading to some far-reaching conclusions about the way we live and eat. It is a revolutionary book which could and should change our lives.”

Fortress Europe by Rudi Rolf & Peter Saal (£9.50)Publisher: Shrewsbury: Airlife Publishing Ltd. — 1988Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 1853100323]Condition: Very Good. Lightly rubbed at the tips of the wrappers. Text complete, clean and tight but with just a tint of toning at the margins of the leaves. Description: First in this, paperback, edition. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps; Plans;

From the cover: “The German capture of the supposedly impregnable Belgian fortress of Eben-Emael in May 1940 shocked the world, while the vaunted Maginot Line proved useless against an enemy who virtually ignored and bypassed it. As always, military planners had designed for the last rather than for the next war, ignoring the advances in tank and aircraft technology which had revolutionised warfare. Even the Germans fell into the same trap, building the Atlantic Wall and the Channel Island defences against invasion from the sea and the West Wall (the so-called ‘Siegfried Line’) against any possible invasion of Germany itself from the west. As a result, throughout the 1930s and ‘40s Western Europe was covered in deeply dug-in bunkers, artillery, machine-guns and anti-aircraft emplacements, observation and fire direction towers, underground magazines and other fortifications, a vast number of which survive to this day due either to their inherent strength or the work of preservation enthusiasts.

This book explores the history of modern fortifications from the 1870s, showing how designs changed radically to meet new threats, particularly in the form of artillery. It shows how some of the major forts fared in battle in both World Wars, and with the aid of dozens of clear maps and photographs, provides a detailed travel-guide for everyone wishing to explore their frequently well-preserved remains. Most are open to the public and many house museums, so opening times are also included. These defensive lines and positions, fashioned from steel and concrete, have stood idle now for over forty years yet still exercise a tremendous pull on the imagination. This book will thus be invaluable not only to students of fortifications but also to anyone touring France, Holland, Belgium, Germany or the Channel Islands.”

Indecent Exposure: A Novel by Evelyn Berckman (£9.50)Publisher: Hamish Hamilton — 1975Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0241891906]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: From the cover: “Those voices! All talking and talking to me. And mixed up with them, in the strangest way, was this… this arithmetic. Numbers, adding and subtracting themselves. As if a partition had given way somewhere’. Mrs Valeria Tor’s mind was deeply disturbed, perhaps bordering on insanity, and yet most of the time she appeared perfectly sane and lucid. But then a curtain seemed to descend, and her entire personality altered. Her son Hugh told his mother’s latest companion, Jacintha Cory, that she merely needed taking out of herself. But how could Jacintha explain Mrs Tor’s suicidal tendencies? And why did she always suffer a relapse after encountering certain gypsies who must have been living in the neighbourhood? What part did Miss Pargill play, that curious woman lurking upstairs? But above all, for Jacintha, the crucial question was: should she trust Hugh or should she trust the solicitor, John Dennison? Before she discovered the answer, she was to experience a period of sheer terror — and was to be reminded of a strange and distasteful encounter with a student of Schumann’s easier piano pieces, whose behaviour belied his respectable exterior.

Evelyn Berckman, setting her latest exercise in tension and mystery against the misleadingly peaceful background of a Sussex show village, turns the screw with a vengeance. Indecent Exposure is her best novel since the classic Stalemate.”

Journey Continued: An Autobiography by Alan Paton (£9.50)Publisher: Oxford University Press — 1988Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 019219237X]Condition: Very Good — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little wrinkled at the edges with a short closed tear and a nick to the head of the upper panel. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned.Description: From the cover: “The second part of my autobiography I hope to write before I die. So ended Towards the Mountain, the first volume, published in 1980.

Alan Paton did indeed complete the writing, and the proof-correcting, of this second part, which he with characteristic modesty entitled Journey Continued, but he did not see the finished book. He died on 12 April 1988, while this book was being printed.

Journey Continued begins in 1948, in which year occurred two of the decisive events of his life: the publication of his unprecedentedly successful novel Cry, the Beloved Country, and the coming to power of the Nationalist government in South Africa. Both events continued to exercise powerful influences on his life, even forty years later, and form part of the two main strands of this book — the literary and the political.

The autobiography ends in 1968, when the Liberal Party was forced to disband itself or to betray its non-racial principles; an Epilogue brings the story up to the present day.

From Cry, the Beloved Country, a musical and a film were made. Paton wryly describes the making of this film and this musical — the latter acclaimed by the audiences, but not by Paton.

The period of the book covers all of Alan Paton’s writings, notably his other novels Too Late the Phalarope and Ah, but Your Land Is Beautiful, his great biographies of J. H. Hofmeyr and Archbishop Geoffrey Clayton, his poignant memoir on the life and death of his first wife Dorrie, and the first volume of his autobiography. How they came to be written, who helped him — and who did not — and his own sometimes surprising, often illuminating evaluations of his own work — all this richly interesting material is here, not least his account of the biography he became deeply involved in but preferred not to complete, of Roy Campbell.

His political life is covered too, notably his part in the founding and nurturing of the Liberal Party of South Africa, of which he became National Chairman, working closely with Leo Marquard, the Ballingers, Donald Molteno, Peter Brown, Edgar Brookes, Jordan Ngubane and Patrick Duncan. His encounters with the African leaders Albert Lutuli, Robert Sobukwe and Z. K. Matthews, and with the controversial priests Trevor Huddleston and Ambrose Reeves, are of special interest.

He gives evidence in favour of Nelson Mandela and others at the Rivonia Trial and endures a savage cross-examination. He agonises over the young members of the Liberal Party involved in the African Resistance Movement (A.R.M.) and its bombings. During his overseas travels he meets and assesses great men like Nehru, Reinhold Niebuhr, and.Martin Niemoller.

Through this autobiography runs his uncompromising opposition to apartheid and its proponents, and at the same time his championship of the liberal tradition of justice, freedom and tolerance in striving towards a non-racial democracy in South Africa. Always he insists on the persistence of hope in the South African situation.

The style of the book is vintage Paton — resonant, trenchant, prophetic, but also ironical, mischievous, and always compassionate.”
