Human Nature: Fact and Fiction by Edited by Robin Headlam Wells & Johnjoe McFadden (£59.50)Publisher: Continuum — 2006Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0826485464]Condition: Near Fine.Description: First in this, paperback, edition. From the cover: “What do we mean by ‘human nature’? Is there a genetically determined core of humanity that unites us all as members of a single species? Or is the thing we call human nature a social construct? And how do we explain the mystery of human creativity? Do great writers have an intuitive grasp of what makes human beings tick, or are they merely the mouthpiece of contemporary culture? It has been claimed that ‘the greatest enterprise of the mind has always been and always will be the attempted linkage of the sciences and humanities’ (Edward O. Wilson). This ground-breaking book marks the beginning of a new dialogue between the two. Rather than focusing on the division between what C.P. Snow called ‘the two cultures’, it shows that the sciences and humanities have much to learn from each other. Points of disagreement remain. Yet there is in this volume a genuine attempt to bridge the gulf that has traditionally separated the sciences and humanities and to reach a better understanding of what it means to be human. Human Nature — Fact and Fiction is a major new contribution to the debate on human nature, set to be required reading for anyone with a background in either the arts or the sciences who is interested in understanding what defines us as human beings — in what we are, and why.”Notes: Foreword or introduction by A. The Treacle Mine Affair by D. E. Tucker (£28.00)Publisher: The Book Guild — 1993Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0863328407]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Slight tanning to the edges of the text block otherwise a very well presented copy.Description: From the cover: “One summer the inhabitants of Bincombe begin to behave strangely. They do not know they have been ‘pixillated’ by a peculiar effluent from the local disused lead workings, which include the oddly named ‘Treacle Mine’.

When Peg and Robin join their country cousins Helen and Adrian at Up-hill Farm for the holidays they form an intrepid team to unravel the fate of some stolen cattle and the mystery of the mine. They become entangled in an adventure much more dangerous and exciting than anything they had bargained for. For instance, Adrian’s Geiger counter shows such disturbing results on samples of water that radioactivity adds a frightening threat to the adventure. Strangers invade the village, headed by a master criminal called ‘The Octopus’. They are obviously up to no good and the daring quartet decide to infiltrate the Roman Cavern — scene of the crooks’ nefarious activities.

The boys make an horrific underground descent through a swallow-hole, but their dangerous attempt only raises more questions as to what dreadful scheme the gang are actually involved in. A good deal of hard work on a steam traction engine, plus the loyal support of their dog Shep, enables the cousins to penetrate the villains’ defences and uncover a wicked intrigue which threatens even more than the well-being of the village.

The final part of the adventure takes them into awesome underground passages, where stalagmites and stalactites provide a surrealistic setting for a crime which has distinctly contemporary significance. This thrilling narrative not only gives the reader an exciting mystery to solve — it also provides rich information on country living and on some of the environmental issues that concern us today.”

Wisdom Of The Wild: How We Treat Our Planet by Anon. (£26.50)Publisher: Word Wide Fund for Nature — 1993Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges. Presentation plate to the first blank.Description: Illustrated with colour photographs. From the cover: “There is no turning back. There never has been in history. Two hundred million American citizens are not going to leave the USA just to give back to the Indians the land that was stolen from them. The Inuit in Greenland are not about to climb into their kayaks to paddle back up the river of history. The wisdom with which “wild” peoples have animated their world cannot be fetched back at will. Nevertheless, there is a great deal to learn. This, for example: how, on the threshold of the third millennium, can we live once again in a finite world without consuming it? Pedagogues tell us that children need elements of the wild and disorder in order to become mentally sound adults. The child in its den is said to be subconsciously remembering the feeling of safety which our ancestors experienced in caves in the childhood of mankind. In Sweden, they let children fly back to the beginnings of humanity on the wings of their imagination, as it were. The wild as a tonic.

Henry David Thoreau’s suggestion that every major city should have some wildness in its vicinity (because otherwise its inhabitants would revert to the wild) is almost one hundred and fifty years old — and highly topical in view of the frustration which people feel in our concrete bunkers.

An end must be put to the dominance of the right angle. Protection programmes for spacious areas of wilderness have one purpose, among others, namely to preserve the charm of untouched nature. Real-life magic! Magic, or rather cheap tricks — that is what our oh-so-en-lightened world thought of the healing knowledge of the jungle Indians for such a long time. Until, at the sight of the burning rain forests, they realised that the best pharmacy in the world was going up in flames.

The awareness of its utility should not be the rescuers’ sole motive, however. If we only take up arms in defence of the earth where our immediate living conditions are threatened, we shall soon be sitting amidst the ruins of a barren planet. It is (unfortunately, some would say) not the case that when the trees die, man also dies immediately. There are no trees in the Mongolian steppes, but they are still not dead. The fact is, as an Indian chief once said: “After the deaths of plants and animals, you will die of the great loneliness in your hearts.” An appeal has been filed against this death sentence. This book contains a few passages from the defence counsel’s speech.”

Victorian Britain and Ireland in Colour by Janice Anderson & Reinhard Schultz (£26.00)Publisher: Carlton — 2005Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1844425584]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges. Leans slightly otherwise a very well presented copy.Description: From the cover: “The Victorian age was one of expansion in many areas, none more so than that of JM travel. With the success of explorers worldwide people’s curiosity grew, and the advent of the railroad in Great Britain and Ireland, which at that time was part of the United Kingdom, meant that the general public could do their own exploring. Many parts of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales that had, at one time, seemed remote were now within relatively easy travelling distance.

This collection of unique polychrome colour photographs, which have never been seen before, captures many of the vistas that became so popular with Victorian holidaymakers -from the quaint and picturesque snapshots of Devon and Cornwall to the tranquillity of the Irish countryside via the beautiful coastline of Wales or the hustle and bustle of London, up to the broads of Norfolk and further north to the wild, heather-strewn hills and awe-inspiring lochs of Scotland.

Many of these sites are still highly popular holiday venues and with good reason, since for the most part they have been protected for historical or environmental reasons. What they share is an abundance of charm and character and, in the cases of those rural and coastal locations, a measure of, peace and tranquillity.

Accompanied by informative, and often thought-provoking captions, these pictures will transport the reader back to a time when the pace of life was, for all its new inventions, a little calmer and more leisurely. Victorian Britain & Ireland in Colour is a thoroughly engaging window on to a bygone age that will captivate readers.”

Architecture and the Environment: Contemporary Bioclimatic Buildings by David Lloyd Jones (£24.00)Publisher: London: Laurence King — 1998Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1856691039]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Publishers shrink wrap, now removed, has caused light rippling to the head of both panels. Dust wrapper slightly tanned on the verso. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Cutaways; Black & White Photographs; Graphs; Colour Photographs; Diagrams; Maps; Tables; Plans;

From the cover: “Sustainable building has commonly been seen as separate from mainstream architecture and has been accorded the status of worthy but dull design. Adopting the term bioclimatic in preference to green to describe buildings which are inspired by nature and have a clear strategy for minimizing environmental depredation, this book seeks to revise this judgement. Introductory chapters trace the history of bioclimatic design in architecture, exploring the relationship between architecture and the natural environment.

An examination of three projects currently under construction points to future directions in bioclimatic architecture. The contemporary projects featured in the main section of the book are diverse — from office buildings which flaunt their measures for energy conservation in the form of external solar shading, wind towers, glazed atria and photovoltaic modules, to a church built from tubes of recycled paper and a museum constructed in timber and inserted in a woodland setting. Architects whose work is featured include Tadao Ando, Shigeru Ban, Edward Cullinan, Foster and Partners, Herzog and Partners, Glenn Murcutt and Arata Isozaki.”

The Commons in the New Millennium: Challenges and Adaptation by Nives Dolsak & Elinor Ostrom (£17.00)Publisher: Cambridge, London: The MIT Press — 2003Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0262541424]Condition: Near Fine. Description: Illustrated by way of: Diagrams; Tables;

From the cover: “Globalization, population growth, and resource depletion are drawing increased attention to the importance of common resources such as forests, water resources, and fisheries. It is critical that these resources be governed in an equitable and sustainable way.

The Commons in the New Millennium presents cutting-edge research in common property theory and provides an overview and progress report on common property research. The book analyzes new problems that owners, managers, policy makers, and analysts face in managing natural commons. It examines recent findings about the physical characteristics of the commons, their complexity and interconnectedness, and the role of social capital. It also provides empirical studies and suggestions for sustainable development.

The topics discussed include the role of financial, political, and social capital in deforestation, community efforts to gain political influence in Indonesia, the Maine lobster industry, outcomes of the implementation of individual transferable quotas in New Zealand and Iceland fisheries, and design of multilateral emissions trading for regional air pollution and global warming.”

Because, as Peter Drucker once said, everything you learned is wrong — at best, it is misleading and insufficient. You typically learn in school, workshops, and seminars that if you can manage the work and serve the people, you have what it takes. It's not true. Maybe you have enough stuff to be a pretty good manager, but it takes a lot more to be a good leader. The Wizard and the Warrior gives leaders the insight and courage they need to take risks on behalf of values they cherish and the people they guide. Great leaders must act both as wizard, calling on imagination, creativity, meaning, and magic, and as warrior, mobilizing strength, courage, and willingness to fight as necessary to fulfil their mission.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". Modernity And Its Futures by Stuart Hall, David Held & Tony McGrew (£14.00)Publisher: Polity Press — 1999Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 9780745609669]Condition: Very Good. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank. Description: A Later Printing. From the cover: “Modernity and its Futures is a major introductory textbook which examines the forces reshaping modern industrial societies and the new patterns, structures and relationships that are emerging in the contemporary world. The key debates about these changes are introduced and critically discussed: they include the transformation of Eastern Europe, the collapse of the USSR, globalisation, environmental challenges, post industrialism, cultural change and post-modernism. The book also looks back to the formation of modern societies, and of social science, to explore the character of ‘modernity’ and the relationship between ‘early-modern’ and ‘post-modern’ societies, and assess whether the paradigms and theories used to analyse ‘modern’ societies are adequate for social formations today. Designed as an introduction to modern societies and modern sociological analyses, this book is of value to students on a wide variety of social science courses in universities and colleges, and also for readers with no prior knowledge of sociology. Selected readings from major social theorists are integrated into each chapter, together with student questions and exercises..”Notes: Size: 9½" x 7¼". In the Understanding Modern Societies series. Learning to Glow: A Nuclear Reader by Edited by John Bradley (£13.00)Publisher: University of Arizona Press — 2000Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0816519560]Condition: Good+. Just ask the radium workers in Ottawa, Illinois, the “downwinders” of Utah, or unsuspecting veterans of the Gulf War. When told from the perspective of ordinary people, nuclear history takes on a much different tone from that of the tranquil voices of authority who always told us we had nothing to fear. In Learning to Glow, writers such as Scott Russell Sanders, Terry Tempest Williams, and Barbara Kingsolver reveal the psychic and emotional fallout of the Cold War and of subsequent developments in nuclear science. Here are stories of and by ordinary people who have suffered the consequences of the decisions made by those in power — stories that will challenge readers to re-examine their preconceptions about the way we deal with issues of nuclear arms and radioactive waste.”Notes: Size: 9" x 6". 317 pages. The Irritable Bowel Syndrome Source Book by Laura O'Hare (£13.00)Publisher: Contemporary Books — 2001Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0737305533]Condition: Near Fine.Description: From the cover: “Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common gastrointestinal complaints. It is classified as a functional disorder because it can be neither detected through standard medical testing nor linked to any specific structural or biochemical cause. Therefore, IBS is diagnosed only through the presence of symptoms such as pain and cramps, gas and bloating, diarrhoea, or constipation. Such symptoms can be extremely debilitating, making IBS a leading cause of worker absenteeism, second only to the common cold. Irritable bowel syndrome is also referred to as spastic colon, mucous colitis, spastic colitis, nervous stomach, or irritable colon. Although it is diagnosed most frequently in women from early adulthood to midlife, anyone can have IBS, including children. All sufferers seem to experience a common frustration because symptoms are frequently embarrassing and seem to arise without warning. Moreover, the search for a solution can be an anxious, disheartening experience that concludes with a vague diagnosis and a trial-and-error approach to treatment. In The Irritable Bowel Syndrome Sourcebook, you will learn: About the normal functioning of the gastrointestinal tract; How the symptoms of IBS are diagnosed and misdiagnosed; How to identify your own dietary and environmental triggers for IBS, including food allergies and food sensitivity; How to manage IBS triggers through food restriction plans and changes in your “eating lifestyle”; How to identify and manage the stress and depression that can also trigger IBS; The link between IBS and other conditions, such as fibromyalgia, nonulcer dyspepsia, acute and bacterial gastroenteritis, and globus hystericus; The role that alcohol abuse or dependence plays in the syndrome; Alternative therapies, including herbal medicine, meditation, acupuncture, biofeedback, hypnosis, and creative visualization.”Notes: Size: 9" x 6". 166 pages. [First published 1975 by Gower Press Limited] From the cover: “Since it was first published in 1975 this Gower Handbook has established itself as an authoritative guide to what is becoming a crucial area of management activity. It is written both for the senior functional manager with cost responsibilities and for the accountant or finance director who designs and maintains cost control systems suited to the needs of users. This new and enlarged edition represents a radical revision. The entire text has been brought up to date and new material has been added on management audits, cost reduction methods, productivity schemes, environmental impacts, output budgeting and the role of costs in pricing. The structure of the Handbook, however, remains the same. Part One explains the nature of costs and the principles of cost control. Part Two reviews the most important approaches and techniques in the management of costs, while Part Three demonstrates how to apply these methods to the main management functions. Each chapter is followed by an annotated list of further reading, and the Handbook concludes with a Glossary of terms and definitions.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". Invertebrate Palaeontology and Evolution by E. N. K. [Euan Neilson Kerr] Clarkson (£12.50)Publisher: George Allen & Unwin — 1984Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0045600082]Condition: Very Good. Gently faded at the spine. Top corner of the upper wrapper slightly dog-eared. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Diagrams;

From the cover: “This major new textbook aims to provide an authoritative and up-to-date treatment of those parts of palaeontology of greatest interest to the undergraduate geologist or earth scientist. It deals comprehensively with all the main groups of invertebrate fossils and introduces evolution and palaeoecology largely in the context of a systematic treatment of taxa which continues to be the essential basis of undergraduate studies.

Palaeontology has developed rapidly in the past thirty years. The traditional topics of palaeontography, taxonomy and biostratigraphy have been greatly expanded and refined. Details of form and structure have been elucidated and microstructure has been revealed in great detail since the advent of the scanning electron microscope in 1965. Interest in palaeoecology, functional morphology and global distribution has also grown strongly, such that they are now well established topics in undergraduate courses. This book presents an integrated treatment of all these aspects, based firmly on the continuing need for a sound knowledge and understanding of the organisms themselves which ensures that the exciting general concepts are properly anchored to geological and biological reality.

The book is profusely illustrated with fully annotated line drawings and photographs, all specially prepared for this particular purpose. Each chapter contains a carefully prepared list of references and further reading, each entry being accompanied by a helpful note to indicate its importance and usefulness to the reader.

Undergraduate students of palaeontology at the introductory and intermediate levels should find the book to be particularly helpful. It is likely to be of greatest interest to geologists and earth scientists, but zoologists, environmental scientists and others should also find it useful.”

Life Style: Your Surroundings and How They Affect You by Edited by Peter Marsh (£12.50)Publisher: Sidgwick & Jackson — 1990Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0283999535]Condition: Good+ — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Some rippling to the pages caused possibly caused by moisture.Description: Illustrated with colour photographs. From the cover: “An exploration of a subject which concerns us all: our immediate environment. Looking at how and why we arrange our daily lives as we do, the author examines our homes, inside and out; our gardens and neighbourhoods; our places of work and reaction; our cars. He asks why we plan and decorate our homes in the way that we do; why we choose certain colours, patterns, sounds and smells and not others; why some people prefer a noisy, crowded urban environment over an isolated country setting. From showing what our surroundings say about us — how they reflect our personalities, self-image, status and ambitions — the author moves on to examine how our surroundings affect us. How should we cope with the stresses of city life or with the changing patterns of country living? How is our behaviour affected by the changing face of the high street and the new shopping centres? Does environment influence why and where people commit crimes. Then there is the question of what we ourselves are doing to the environment. The destruction of the ozone layer, of rain forests; the growth in toxic water — all are twentieth century phenomena which are having and will continue to have serious global consequences on health, climate and communities.”Notes: 256 pages. In taking this simple approach to conservation it immediately becomes clear what is wrong and how you can start to do something to reverse the accelerating destruction of planet earth.”

From the cover: “If Noah were alive today, he would perceive a new deluge approaching — an extinguishing flood of human overpopulation, overconsumption and environmental abuse on a catastrophic scale. And his concern would be for more than the “animals two by two” saved in his first Ark. The modern Noah fears for the whole natural world — the wild places and wild creatures, insects, plants and microbes, the very soil and air and climate on which we depend -and understands that the vital fabric of this world is, itself, the Ark which carries all living things.

The last 25 years have seen a huge upsurge of popular awareness and activity in defence of this living Ark. Conservation, in its broadest sense, has become the central issue of our times. Today, Noah has an army of millions to call under the global banner of The World Conservation Strategy.

The State of the Ark addresses this powerful theme. Lee Durrell’s clear and illuminating text weaves between a series of stunning pictorial maps and moving case stories of conservation success and failures around the world. The atlas maps and describes its subject in five major chapters: The State of the Ark; The State of the Wild; The State of Species; The State of the Regions; and Noah’s Army.

It is compulsive reading, and an essential source of information for all who are concerned with the state of the natural world today, and the race against time to save what we can for future generations.”

The Second Culture: British Science in Crisis: The Scientists Speak Out by Clive Cavendish Rassam (£12.50)Publisher: Aurum — 1993Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1854102338]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges with a short closed tear to the bottom corner of the upper panel. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank.Description: From the cover: “This book takes the reader into the heart of one of Britain’s least understood, yet most important and influential, professions — science. It examines the personalities, motives and ambitions of the members of that “second culture”, whose language and mode of thought is so alien to the bulk of their fellow citizens. And it examines their relationship with the rest of society which is, through its industrial and governmental institutions, their ultimate paymaster. More than 70 scientists were interviewed in the course of the author’s research. Their specialisms range from astronomy and genetics to industrial chemistry, medicine and environmental conservation. Many of them have played a leading role in significant scientific discoveries and are internationally renowned. Several head universities or Oxbridge Colleges and others hold senior positions in world-class companies. Five are Nobel prizewinners and 24 are Fellows of the Royal Society. Together, they not only speak for British science; they also provide us with a unique insight into the rewards and pressures of their profession, and reveal what it is like to be a scientist, in Britain, in the final decade of the century. Clive Rassam also looks at the relationship between “UK plc” and its scientists, at what we as a nation expect from our scientists, and at why the results so often fall short of our expectations. He canvasses the views of industrialists, management consultants and cabinet advisors, as well as those of the scientists themselves, in order to discover why a nation with so successful a record in scientific innovation has failed so lamentably to reap the rewards in terms of prosperity. Finally, the book examines claims that British science is dangerously underfunded, and that national science policy lacks purpose and coherence. Almost without exception, the scientists whom the author interviewed despaired of the future of British science and, as a consequence, foresaw yet further economic decline, with only a few industries, most notably chemicals and pharmaceuticals, remaining to show what could have been achieved had the country as a whole made proper use of its scientific resources. In particular, they complain of the consequences of their profession being funded and “managed” by civil servants and politicians who have no understanding of science, and of the uncertainties and short-term considerations which paralyse policy-making in the field.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼".
