To Find A Golden Pony by Amanda Gavin [Clodagh Micaela Gibson Jarvie] (£278.00)Publisher: J. M. Dent & Sons — 1965Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the spine ends and corners with corresponding grazing to the dustwrapper. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Text complete, clean and tight. A pleasant copy of an uncommon title. Description: From the cover: “This is a pony book with a difference. It deals sensitively with a young girl’s companionship with animals, and how she learns to manage them while at the same time developing self-reliance during a period of delicate readjustment. Jo Garrett is five when her mother dies, and her father wisely sends her away from his Suffolk farm to live with cousins in Sussex. So, until she is ten, she comes under the spell of ponies, caring for them as well as riding them. She then returns to the farm, and her father is pleased to notice what a self-confident child she has become, with definite ideas of her own as to what she wants from life. Jo’s personality is also contrasted with all the others in the story — both human and animal — who come fully alive as individuals in this entertaining account of country life. Finally, Jo’s slow adjustment to the idea of her father’s remarriage is described with understanding and insight..”Notes: Jacket designed by Elisabeth Grant. Illustrated by Elisabeth Grant. The Marimbas of Guatemala by Vida Chenoweth (£148.00)Publisher: Lexington: University of Kentucky Press — 1964Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with heavier tanning to the spine. Boards slightly sprung. From the cover: “This book presents here the first report in English on the Guatemalan marimba — the only American musical instrument not imported from Europe. In Guatemala today may be found three distinct types of marimba types which reveal the probable stages of its evolution there.

To each type Miss Chenoweth has devoted a chapter of this book, in which she gives detailed descriptions of the instruments: the chromatic marimba, the modern instrument most widely seen and played; the simple miramba, which represents an intermediate stage in development; and the gourd marimba, a primitive version which is said to be common among the Indians but which required a four-month search by the author to find one still in use.”

S. R. Badmin and the English Landscape by Chris Beetles (£79.00)Publisher: London: Collins — 1985Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Signed by the Author.[ISBN: 0004120205]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Signed by the author on the half-title page beneath his name — unverified and reflected as such in the lack of premium. Illustrated by way of: Colour Plates; Black & White Plates; Chronology Tables; Laid in publishers compliment slip and exhibition invitation.

From the cover: “S. R. BADMIN AND THE ENGLISH LANDSCAPE is a celebration and appreciation of one of Britain’s foremost watercolour painters. The work of Stanley Roy Badmin is uniquely familiar and dear to the post-war generation. No other artist has had such consistent popular exposure: for forty years his beautifully detailed and romantic landscapes have graced nature books and travel guides, Puffin Picture Books, the covers of Radio Times and Reader’s Digest, and innumerable greetings cards and calendars.

S. R. BADMIN AND THE ENGLISH LANDSCAPE is an authoritative and long-overdue survey of Badmin’s life and art. The text is lavishly accompanied by a selection of his book illustrations as well as a wealth of his sketches taken from over sixty years of careful work and loving observation of nature.

The text is followed by a catalogue raisonne of Badmin’s etchings, many of them reproduced here for the first time, together with full-colour reproductions of forty-four of Badmin’s best watercolours. The detailed captions to the plates are based on the artist’s own memories, giving a privileged insight into the technique and inspiration for each work. A list of exhibits and book illustrations and a full chronology complete this account of England’s most popular watercolourist.

Badmin teaches us to look again at nature, and share his pleasure in the landscape around us. His countryside is our countryside.”

Lamastre by Michael Strong (£68.00)Publisher: Robert Hale — 1984Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0709014007]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges. Description: From the cover: “Once the top hit-man of Europe. Lamastre had been dealt with effectively and painfully by Harold Levi, the financier who never gave in to pressure. And now Lamastre has escaped from the German prison where Levi had put him while, in Zurich, the fat-cats who had procured his release, rubbed their whiskers and laughed at the thought of the revenge that Lamastre would take on Levi, a man they feared as a miser fears ruin.

The action swings from Germany, to France, to Zurich, to Southeast Asia and back to London and rural England with Hong Kong bankers. Bangkok bar-girls, an ex-Guardsman, a former Israeli commando and the finest pair of killers that Paris can produce, all involved in the intricate and fast-moving plot. And, of course, there is Ferguson, hired by Levi to hunt and destroy Lamastre, who almost succeeds yet doesn’t quite fail.”

The White Guard by Mikhail Bulgakov (£64.00)Publisher: London: Collins & Harvill Press — 1971Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0002619059]Condition: Good+ — in Good Dust Wrapper. Edges of the dust wrapper somewhat frayed, without loss although untidy and now tape-reinforced on the verso, with sunning to the spine. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Previous owners' gift inscription to the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight otherwise bar for small tear at the foot of the last two leaves. Description: From the cover: “The time — 1918. The place — Kiev, capital of the Ukraine, torn by revolution and civil war. The people — the Turbin family of two brothers and a sister, whose home is a calm pool of affection, warmth and humanity in a maelstrom of cold, snow, violence and sudden death. Alexei Turbin, eldest brother and head of the family, is a doctor returned from the war; his sister Elena is married to an unpleasant Baltic German who scuttles away like a rat as soon as danger threatens. The youngest is Nikolka, at seventeen just out of officer-cadet school and a volunteer in one of the scratch units manned by officers which formed the White Guard in the Ukraine. A cuckoo in their nest is their hopeless cousin from Zhitomir, Lariosik, a charming bungler who always says the wrong thing, breaks everything he touches, yet is welcomed into the Turbins’ charmed circle with love and kindness.

At the beginning, the Germans are still occupying Kiev, propping up the feeble regime of the Hetman Skoropadsky. Their cause lost in advance by the Hetman’s ignoble defection, Alexei and Nikolka Turbin and their White Guard officer friends make a brave but futile attempt to resist the capture of Kiev by the adventurer Petlyura and his army of long-moustached, baggy-trousered, trigger-happy Ukrainian roughnecks.

Savage while it lasts, Petlyura’s occupation of Kiev is at least short and as his motley troops slink away, Bulgakov coins an image of power which is the perfect antithesis to the cosy, womb-like interior of the Turbin’s home: on the track outside Kiev, hissing gently, waiting to grind inexorably into the city, stands the huge steel-clad articulated juggernaut of a Bolshevik armoured train.”

Handley Page Aircraft Since 1907 Revised by Derek N. James by C. H. [Christopher Henry] Barnes (£56.00)Publisher: London: Putnam — 1987Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0851778038]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: 2nd (revised) edition, 1st printing, [First Published: 1976] Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps; Plans;

From the cover: “First heard in aviation a few years before the 1914-18 war, the name of Handley Page became one to conjure with when strategic bombing of Rhineland armament factories began in 1917 as a counter-blow to the German submarine blockade of the British Isles. After the war an O/400 and a V/1500 were the first two aircraft to fly all the way from England to India, and soon afterwards Handley Page pioneered commercial air transport services across the English Channel and in China, India and South Africa.

A new generation of twin- and four-engined monoplane bombers — Hampden and Halifax — emerged to challenge Hitler’s ambition between 1935 and 1945, giving rise in turn to the Hastings and Hermes transports of the 1950s; finally the nuclear age produced the Victor transonic bomber, which remains in service as the RAF’s long-range flight refuelling tanker A new line of smaller civil transports began with the acquisition in 1948 of Miles Aircraft Ltd and from the Reading factory stemmed the very successful Dart-Herald.

This book contains photographs, three-view drawings and data of every type of Handley Page aircraft built and flown, as well as many historic project drawings not previously published, and completes the author’s trilogy, which already includes Bristol Aircraft since 1910 and Shorts Aircraft since 1900 in the series.”

The Fiction-Makers by Anne Stevenson (£54.50)Publisher: Oxford University Press — 1985Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0192119729]Condition: Very Good. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank with offset to the reverse of the upper wrapper. Top edge of the text block slightly spotted.Description: First in this, paperback, edition. A review copy, with the review slip laid in. From the cover: “Anne Stevenson’s new collection has primarily to do with memory, with how the language of imagination shapes histories and lives. The title poem is a serio-comic consideration of how quickly present time becomes the past. Other poems celebrate the deep continuities between generations, and the presence, in our ‘fictions’, of the dead. Here are extremes of joy and sorrow, balanced in the subtle rhythms Anne Stevenson uses to keep her experience both close and clear. No poet writing today is more conscious of the sound of poems or of how meaning is implicated in sound.

Anne Stevenson now lives in an ex-pit village near Durham, and many of these poems celebrate the stubborn life of northern England. At the core of the book, however, is the death of her friend and fellow poet, Frances Horovitz, for whom the much-admired ‘Willow Song’ was written. The book ends with an autobiographical satire based on Le Petit Testament of Francois Villon.”

During a night out in an East End pub, the pair had an argument. Dave thought there must be hundreds of people in the world who shared his name. Danny didn’t. They were drunk. Five hours later they were on a train to Scotland… That morning, they unwittingly kick-started an uncontrollable adventure that would eventually take them over 25,000 miles around the world, finding and meeting complete strangers with only one thing in common — they were all called Dave German too. During their six month odyssey, Dave and Danny were caught in a tornado in New York, they lost their shoes in Norway and they caused a security alert at an Israeli airport. They met greenkeepers, booksellers, carpetfitters, gurus, policemen, film stars and a semi-retired lighthouse technician.”Notes: Size: C Format (8½" x 5¼"). 314 pages. Japanese Aircraft 1910-41 by Robert C. Mikesh & Shorzoe Abe (£51.00)Publisher: London: Putnam Aeronautical Books — 1990Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0851778402]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges with a few small indentations toward the top of the upper panel. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Diagrams; Tables;

From the cover: “Japanese Aircraft 1910-1941 will almost certainly come to be regarded as one of the truly outstanding works of aviation history. In the preface the authors state ‘For the vast number of Japanese aeroplane types that were built during the period covered by this book, it is disappointing that more has not been written in English about them’.

As a result of massive research the authors have now corrected this shortcoming. The names Kawasaki, Mitsubishi, Nakajima and a few others are well known but this work includes descriptions of the products of large numbers of companies and organisations that are known only to a few people outside of Japan.

The aeroplanes covered here range from the single type produced by the Awazu Flight Research Studio, include as would be expected the proliferation of Aichis, Kawanishis, Kawasakis, Mitsubishis and Nakajimas, and ends in alphabetical order with the products from the Naval Air Arsenal at Yokosuka.

Including early privately-built aeroplanes and those produced under licence, this work covers nearly 400 types. Appendices include aircraft of the Pacific war, a comparison of calendars, a bibliography and a glossary.”

The Anatomy of Glory: Napoleon and His Guard a Study in Leadership by Henry Lachouque (£45.00)Publisher: Rhode Island: Brown Island Press; London: Lund Humphries — 1961Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper with the laminate lifting and fading at the same. Original postal box now a little worn. Light spotting throughout, heavier to the start and finish but the text and plates remain bright and tight notwithstanding. Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Plates; Black & White Plates; Maps; Fold-Out Maps [2]; Maps to the endpapers and blanks; Appendices [5];

From the cover: “THEY GRUMBLED… BUT THEY KEPT ON FOLLOWING HIM

Of all his works, the Imperial Guard was Napoleon’s finest creation. Moulded from the flotsam of the French Revolution, this elite corps swept through Europe for fifteen years behind its indomitable master, sharing in his brilliant victories and bearing the brunt of his epic defeats with unfaltering devotion.

This narrative, presented through the eyes of the participants in an incomparable drama of endurance, heroism, and fidelity, has been adapted for English readers from Commandant Lachouque’s monumental work Napoleon Et La Garde Imperiale, crowned by the French Academy in 1957.

The men of the Guard marched in triumph into Milan, Vienna, Berlin, Warsaw, Madrid, Moscow. Members of the new popular knighthood , they taught the Grande Armee how to fight. They were tortured in Spain, frozen in Russia, shaken with typhus in Germany. Ragged and famished, they won a dozen battles in 60 days against overwhelming odds in the campaign of France.

When their chief fell from power in 1814 they followed him into exile in Elba. Then they returned to reconquer France in 20 days without firing a shot.

The Guard died at Waterloo. It never surrendered.
