Jet: The Story Of A Pioneer by Sir Frank Whittle (£88.00)Publisher: Frederick Muller — 1953Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good — in Poor Dust Wrapper. Edges of the dust wrapper somewhat frayed, rubbed at the leading edge of the flaps and loss to the tail of the spine. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding. Edges of the textblock heavily spotted. One leaf of the contents section is mis-trimmed at the top corner and stands proud of the block. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned. A decent copy, uncommon in the first edition. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs;

From the cover: “At the Royal Air Force Station at Cranwell in Lincolnshire on the evening of the I5th May, 1941, an aeroplane of unusual type was seen to taxi to the eastern end of the runway and then, after a run of 600 yards, to rise gracefully into the air for a flight of seventeen minutes. To the distant observers one very strange thing about this beautiful little aeroplane was that it had a very short undercarriage, but an even stranger thing was that it had no propeller. The aeroplane was the Gloster/Whittle E. 28/39 — the world’s first successful jet aeroplane — making its first flight.

This book is primarily the story behind that historic event. Frank Whittle, who eleven years earlier, at the age of 22, had applied for his patent for a turbo-jet engine, here sets on record with characteristic modesty his own courageous pioneer work and that of the small company, Power Jets Ltd. , which he helped to form in March 1936 to develop the engine. The dreams of his boyhood and the plans of his youth were brought to fruition in an invention that not only revolutionised military aircraft but set Britain ahead of the world in Civil Aviation, bringing the inventor a knighthood and an award of £100,000 at the age of only forty-one.

In non-technical language the author describes, for the first time, his hard and often bitter struggle with engineering problems, with financial difficulties and with the frustrations arising out of official policy. He also reveals the epic story of Power Jets’ successful battle against severe engineering difficulties, in spite of serious handicaps and of its losing battle against a combination of powerful forces in Government and Industry.”

Shorts Aircraft Since 1900 by C. H. Barnes (revised By Derek N. James) (£36.00)Publisher: London: Putnam Aeronautical Books — 1989Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0851778194]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: 2nd (revised) edition, 1st printing, [First Published: 1967] Jacket illustration: Keith Woodcock's original painting shows Short Sunderland MR 5 RN273 of No 201 Squadron, RAF, taking off one evening from Sullom Voe, Shetland, in September 1952. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Tables; Plans;

From the cover: “From the first spherical balloons made by Eustace and Oswald Short, the author traces the brothers’ progress as engineers to the Aero Club till Wilbur Wright’s arrival in France in 1908 and their consequent change-over from balloons to aeroplanes — a decision endorsed by their eldest brother Horace, who joined them to set up the world’s first aircraft production line.

Their rapid expansion as aircraft suppliers to the Royal Navy and their notable progress with deck-launching, folding wings, buoyancy bags and sprung floats led to enormous production of the famous Short Type 184 during World War I, in which period the firm also built rigid airships.

Oswald Short’s pioneering work with a successful series of metal hulled flying-boats is described and their operational histories recorded.

Appendices list all Shorts’ constructors’ numbers, serials and registration marks. The book contains specifications for all Short types and variants, and complete lists to date of type designations and preliminary designs.

For this new edition the section on unbuilt projects has been expanded and the post-1945 story of Rochester’s last days and Northern Ireland’s new industry has been carried down to the present. The Skyvan and Belfast chapters have been up-dated and the 330, Sherpa and 360 have been added to the aircraft coverage, as well as notes on the forthcoming Tucano.”

Richard Simkin's Uniforms of the British Army: Infantry, Royal Artillery, Royal Engineers and Other Corps by W. Y. Carman (£31.00)Publisher: Exeter: Webb and Bower — 1985Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0863500315]Condition: Very Good — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Gently faded at the spine of the dust wrapper. Leans slightly. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Jacket illustration: 1st Foot Guards (Grenadier Guards), 1912. Illustrated by way of: Colour Plates; Colour Drawings;

From the cover: “Richard Simkin’s illustrations of British Army uniforms up to the First World War are well known both for their high quality and for their value to collectors, model-makers and military historians.

To follow his first volume of uniforms of the cavalry regiments, W. Y. Carman has now extended the collection to cover the infantry regiments, including the Gentlemen-at-Arms, the Royal Company of Archers (Scotland), the Foot Guards, the Infantry of the Line, the Royal Artillery, the Royal Engineers (including the Royal Military Artificers and the Sappers and Miners), the Army Service Corps.

Although Simkin’s illustrations are not available for all of the 109 infantry regiments before 1881, a brief outline of each regiment is given which includes changes of title extended to cover the Army of today so that the modern soldier may trace his ‘ancestors’. The text of uniform changes is in special sections, such as that of Highland and Lowland regiments, rifle corps, fusiliers and light infantry, while that on infantry is broken down to include musicians, pioneers and other groups.

Richard Simkin, born in 1850, was a soldier in a London Volunteer regiment before attending art schools in Kensington and Heatherley. He married in 1880 and lived in Aldershot for six years before moving to Herne Bay where he died in 1926, aged seventy-five.”

Robo Sapiens: Evolution of a New Species by Peter Menzel & Faith D'Aluisio (£21.00)Publisher: Cambridge, London: The MIT Press — 2000Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0262133822]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges. Description: Jacket illustration: A face robot from the Hara-Kobayashi laboratory of the Science University of Tokyo. Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “Around the world, scientists and engineers are participating in a high-stakes race to build the first intelligent robot. Many robots already exist — automobile factories are full of them. But the new generation of robots will be something else: smart machines that act ever more like living creatures.

What will happen then? With our prosthetic limbs, titanium hips, and artificial eyes, we are already beginning to resemble our machines. And when we implant chips in our bodies to connect ourselves directly to computers, the likeness will become only more pronounced. Science fiction will have become science fact.

Meanwhile — and equally important — our machines are beginning to resemble us. Robotic spiders, crabs, geckos, and dogs are already spilling from the laboratories. The next steps are to re-create Homo sapiens itself and then go beyond. Robots can already walk, talk, and dance; they can react to human facial expressions and obey verbal commands. When scientists go on to create fully autonomous robots with greater intelligence than human beings, will they be our partners or our rivals? Will it be simply a robotic revolution or a true extension of evolution? Could machines and humankind meld into a single species — Robo sapiens ?

In Robo sapiens, award-winning journalists Peter Menzel and Faith D’Aluisio present the next generation of intelligent robots and their makers. Accompanying brilliant photographs of more than a hundred robots are extensive interviews with robotics pioneers, anecdotal field notes with behind-the-scenes information, and easy-to-understand technical data about the machines. Robo sapiens is a field guide to our mechanical future.”

Operation Freshman:The Rjukan Heavy Water Raid 1942 by Richard Wiggan (£17.00)Publisher: London: William Kimber & Co., Ltd — 1986Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 071830571X]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Contains: Black & white photographs; Maps;

From the cover: “On a winter’s night in late 1942 there foundered in the mountains of Southern Norway one of the most vital — if not the most vital — missions of the Second World War. Thirty-four men in two gliders, towed by Halifax bombers, set out to sabotage the heavy water plant at Vemork and so cripple Germany’s efforts to be the first to produce an atomic bomb. Both gliders and one of the Halifaxes crashed. The crew of the bomber died instantly, as did the pilots and co-pilots of the gliders. But there were survivors from the gliders, members of the British 1st Airborne Division, Royal Engineers.

It was the fate of these Royal Engineers that turned this little-known raid, code-named Operation Freshman, into a tale of horror and murder that remained a mystery until British forces returned to Norway at the end of the war. The men died as a direct result of a top secret order just issued by Hitler and, then unknown to the British, aimed at curbing damaging commando raids.

Richard Wiggan tells how Operation Freshman was conceived and planned in a desperate race against time and of the difficulties to be overcome. His in-depth research into the operation included access to war crimes trial records not yet open to the general public. He presents a detailed account which includes Norwegian involvement in Freshman, both in the operation itself and in aiding the survivors. The book also describes the subsequent successful raid on Vemork by Special Operations Executive Norwegian agents.”

The Knife and Fork Man: The Life and Work of Charles Benjamin Redrup by William Fairney (£17.00)Publisher: Badminton: Diesel Publishing — 2007Binding: Hardback First Edition. [ISBN: 9780955445507]Condition: Very Good. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding with a little ding to the join of the upper board. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Contains: Black & white photographs; Colour plates; Diagrams; Colour frontispiece; Appendices [2];

From the cover: “Charles Benjamin Redrup, the engineer and inventor, was born in Newport, South Wales in 1878. Raised in Barry, he designed and manufactured the unusual “Barry” motor cycle and went on to design a prodigious range of engines for First World War aircraft, motor cycles, cars, boats and buses. He carried out most of his development work in a simply-equipped home workshop, and often said that he made most of his engines with little more than “a knife and fork".

He was the inventor of the unique “Wobble-Plate” axial engines which powered a motor launch and a Crossley Motors motor car in the 1920s. A variant of the engine flew in a Simmonds Spartan aircraft in 1929. Several variants of his axial engines powered vehicles of the Bristol Tramways and Carriage Company in the 1930s. During the Second World War he worked on top-secret armaments projects for the Lancaster and other aircraft. After the war he designed more motor-cycle engines and a large 2,000 horse-power axial aero engine. His name appears fleetingly in many reference works but no full description of his extensive and innovative work has been previously written.”

National Service: The Best Years of Their Lives by Trevor Royle (£14.00)Publisher: André Deutsch [Andre Deutsch] — 2007Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 9780233002309]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Leans otherwise a very well presented copy including the audio CD-ROM in flap to the front pastedown. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Tables;

From the cover: “Today, in an era of pared-down volunteer forces, National Service is something of a curiosity — a relic of the post-war era. However, to the millions who experienced their two-year period of conscription, it was a required rite of passage and a defining influence on their lives.

National Service: The Best Tears of Their Lives is the definitive history of that last period of conscription. It looks back at an era where young men entered into an experience that changed their lives irrevocably whether soldier, sailor or airman.

Many fought wars in far-off colonial outposts, such as Malaya, Kenya and Cyprus, while others learned skills and trades that they could build on once back in Civvy Street. Whether positive or negative, the conscripts went in boys and came out men.

Trevor Royle brings together the personal memories of many of the National Servicemen and his own painstaking research into the subject, to create a book that evokes one of the key periods in post-war British military history and questions whether conscription has a place in twenty-first-century life.”

Today, the range of electronic equipment being introduced into the consumer environment is rapidly increasing, effectively opening up the vast new industry of ‘Consumer Electronics’. In addition to colour television, there are video cassette recorders which allow television programmes to be recorded for later viewing or permet pre-recorded cassettes (such as feature movies) to be watched; teletext and viewdata receivers (usually built into normal television sets) that provide access to vast data bases of consumer and business information such as news, weather, sport and entertainment guides; video discs that will permit feature movies to be purchased for less than £10 and viewed via a record player producing pictures as well as sound; television and electronic games that are allowing rapidly advancing electronic technology to provide entertainment on many levels, for adults and children; and home computers which are not dissimilar to the more complex television games but with the important difference that they may be programmed to play games and perform many thousands of different domestic tasks. Many other aspects of consumer electronics are covered in the book including electronic watches and calculators and, with so much electronic equipment installed in the home, home protection and security devices which are becoming increasingly important, not only as defences against theft, but also fire. Finally, developments are continuing all the time in hi-fi and these are thoroughly covered, together with the increasingly important field of in-car entertainment market. Consumer electronics are destined to have a tremendous impact on our lives over the coming years, and FROM TELEVISION TO HOME COMPUTERS provides an insight into that future.”Notes: Size: 8¾" x 5¾". Achievement in all spheres was, it was supposed, the preserve of men only. In fact, as this new book clearly reveals, there were numerous women who, with minimal education, little financial independence and only basic domestic skills, pursued active and highly successful roles in the world outside the home. Well illustrated and beautifully presented, Coming Out of the Kitchen is the perfect celebration of three centuries of women's achievement, redressing the balance with more traditional history and scuppering for good the notion that the role of women began and ended with marriage. It will be essential reading for women, and men, everywhere.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". Red boards with Gilt titling to the Spine. 216 pages. Physical Basis for Electrical Engineering by Thomas L. Martin (£11.50)Publisher: Macmillan & Co. — 1958Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good+ - in Good+ DJ. DJ slightly ruffled at the edges, nicked at the head of the spine and slightly faded. Edges of the textblock lightly tanned with offset to the endpapers and a bookshop sticker to the pastedown.Description: From the introduction: “The purpose of this book is to acquaint the reader with the general physical concepts and phenomena forming the basis for electrical engineering. Both the microscopic and macroscopic viewpoints are presented. The book was written for engineers, and the viewpoint is that of the engineer. Physics is not engineering, but in electrical engineering the demarcation lines are often so blurred as to be meaningless. In such cases, the material presented to engineers and physicists may cover the same ground, but the reasons for doing so and the approaches followed are often quite different. The material presented in this book is a simplified presentation of well known phenomena and theories originally contributed and published by others. The purpose here is to show the broad physical basis supporting the phenomena associated with electrical engineering, to show the position of each subject in its general relation to other subjects."Notes: Size: 8½" x 5¾". Mysteries of Lost Empires by Marshall Jon Fisher & David E. Fisher (£10.50)Publisher: Channel 4 — 2000Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0752216066]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Price Clipped.Description: Illustrated with colour photographs. From the cover: “Mysteries of Lost Empires accompanies the widely acclaimed Channel 4 series of the same name. Its five experimental archaeology projects reveal teams of experienced archaeologists, historians and building engineers recreating the technological feats of ancient civilisations using only the tools available at the time.

Each chapter tells the whole story behind one of the projects in the programme, giving the history of an ancient people, the mystery of their archaeological achievement, the story of other scientists who have tried to explain it and failed, and the day-to-day drama of the team’s quest to recreate the feat. Subjects include the enormous moai statues on Easter Island, a unique Chinese bridge made of woven timbers and the development of medieval weapons of war. From the sheer si/e of ancient Egyptian obelisks to the heating and ventilation systems of Roman baths, each project has provided a range of mysteries to today’s archaeologists.

By focusing on the cultural background and technological capabilities that shaped the history of a civilisation, the teams provide a practical test for both old and new historical theories. They examine the impact of an achievement on a society (the social significance of the Roman bath, for example) and the potential it created for subsequent technological progress.

Mysteries of Lost Empires provides an alternative, dynamic approach to history. The book’s emphasis on culture, technological difficulties, and the problem solving and teamwork involved in overcoming them, will thrill readers eager to learn more about the subjects in the series.”

Twenty years later, Anthony Sampson has written a completely new Anatomy, with a deeper perspective. It provides an up-to-date picture of the country’s rulers, but also tries to assess and record what happened to the hopes and promises of change, and how the British, the first industrial people, tried and largely failed to resolve the problems of their decline in the aftermath of empire.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". An Ancient Air: A Biography of John Stringfellow of Chard, the Victorian Aeronautical Pioneer by Harald Penrose (£9.50)Publisher: Airlife — 2000Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 9781840371840]Condition: Near Fine.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “An Ancient Air portrays the hitherto only briefly recorded life of John Stringfellow of Chard (1799-1883), the first man in the world to demonstrate that engine-powered winged flight was practicable.

Whereas earlier general aviation histories tend to discount Stringfellow’s work, An Ancient Air reveals that his absorption with aviation was lifelong, starting with the construction of balloons, recorded here for the first time. Though professionally a lace-machine specialist, he was interested in all aspects of scientific development — he was a founder member of the Chard Institution for educational lectures, pioneered local photography, devised medical apparatus and even patented an armoured gun-carriage.

This book seeks to demonstrate the relationship of Stringfellow’s work with that of his colleague, William Samuel Henson. They worked closely together on various aeronautical projects between the years 1835 and 1847, and the author puts forward evidence that it was Stringfellow who was entirely responsible for the historic 1848 monoplane, the first ever engine-driven model aeroplane to make a free flight. After Henson emigrated to the USA in 1848, Stringfellow continued to design revolutionary aeroplane models, such as the triplane he entered in the the 1868 Crystal Palace Exhibition.

In his old age Stringfellow maintained his interest in aviation and passed on his enthusiasm to his son, Frederick John Stringfellow, who later built a model biplane and a multi-plane.

An Ancient Air, meticulously researched by Harald Penrose, an acknowledged authority on aviation history, presents for the first time a detailed account of Stringfellow’s historic discoveries and sheds further welcome light on the pioneering days of aviation.”

Managing to Communicate: Using Telecommunications for Increased Business Efficiency by Martin P. Clark (£9.50)Publisher: John Wiley & Sons — 1994Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0471941883]Condition: Good. A pleasant enough reading copy. Library stamp to the ½ title page, no further marks, otherwise a very well presented copy.Description: From the cover: “How efficiently does your company communicate? Many companies consider improving communications as one of their top business priorities. But while the recent rapid evolution of technology has offered a wide range of new opportunities, many businesses have been slow to reap the full benefits, bewildered about what it means for them and what first steps they can take.

This book sets out to redress the situation by laying down a framework for the management of business communications and the best practice in the use of telecommunications technology. Features include:

  • How to assess business communications needs.
  • Best telecommunications practice for human communication — including telephone, mobile telephony, voicemail, electronic mail, videoconference, ‘private’ and ‘virtual private’ networks.
  • Effective data networking—Local Area Networks (LANs) and Wide Area Networks (WANs).
  • Tips for effective international networking.
  • Prospects for revolutionising business through emerging telecommunications technology.
The style is simple and pragmatic. The focus is telecommunications management, methods and tricks. The foundation is a thorough understanding of the technology — its strengths and its limits — and how it can be made to serve business. It is a book to raise expectations of what can and should be achieved.

For corporate telecommunications managers, technologists and communications engineers it will be an indispensable source of practical ideas and management techniques. For the marketing as well as the technical staff of manufacturers, network operators and communications providers serving corporate networks, it will be an invaluable opportunity to better understand customer needs. For the general business person and senior executive it will be a comprehensive source of advice — ‘how can I improve our communication?’ — ‘which investments make sense?’”

PASCAL for Science and Engineering by James J. McGregor & Alan H. Watt (£9.50)Publisher: Pitman — 1983Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0273018892]Condition: Very Good. Description: First in this, paperback, edition.

From the cover: “Every scientist and engineer must obtain some familiarity with the use of computers, and their applications to his/her subject area. This book teaches the reader how to write programs in Pascal, which scientists and engineers have found increasingly valuable since the advent of the microcomputer: apart from the advantages of readability and error protection, programs written in Pascal are efficient.

The authors present a genuinely introductory text for beginners. They avoid unnecessary jargon, and do not present more information than is absolutely necessary about the internal operation of the computer. They introduce the elementary techniques by means of examples, and encourage the reader to develop a good programming style by attempting the exercises set in each chapter.

The book is written in two parts. The first part is a self-contained introduction to Pascal. The second part examines the computer applications that are of interest to the scientist and engineer.”

From the cover: “The SAS mission conducted behind Iraqi lines is one of the most famous stories of courage and survival in modern warfare. Of the eight members of the SAS regiment who set off, only one escaped capture. This is his story.

Late in the evening of 24 January 1991 the patrol was compromised deep behind enemy lines in Iraq. A fierce fire-fight left the eight men miraculously unscathed, but they were forced to run for their lives. Their aim was to reach the Syrian border, 120 kilometres to the north-west, but during the first night the patrol accidentally broke into two groups, five and three.

Chris Ryan found himself left with two companions. Nothing had prepared them for the vicious cold of the desert winter, and they began to suffer from hypothermia. During the night one of the men was to disappear in a blinding blizzard. Then the next day a goat-herd walked on top of the two survivors. Chris’s remaining partner, thinking the Arab friendly, went off with him in search of food, and never returned.

Left on his own, Chris Ryan beat off another Iraqi attack and set out alone. His greatest adventures were only just beginning…

The One That Got Away is a breathtaking story of extraordinary courage under fire, of hairbreadth escapes, of the best trained soldiers in the world fighting against the most adverse conditions, and, above all, of one man’s courageous refusal to lie down and die..”

Wartime Courage: Stories of Extraordinary Courage by Ordinary People in World War Two by Gordon Brown (£9.50)Publisher: Bloomsbury — 2008Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0747596077]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Leans slightly.Description: From the cover: “In these eleven stories of courage in the Second World War, Prime Minister Gordon Brown pays tribute to the heroism of that great generation of British men and women who took up arms against tyranny and overcame it. Some are accounts of decisive action taken in the searing heat of battle: early in the war Lieutenant Richard Stannard, RNR, showed steely calm and ingenuity during the retreat from Norway in 1940, winning a VC; while on D-Day, Company Sergeant Major Hollis of the Green Howards won his by storming a pillbox alone, paving the way for a crucial advance to higher ground. Other stories tell of great danger faced again and again: Graham Hayes and Geoffrey Appleyard of the Small Scale Raiding Force (forerunner of the SBS) carried out daring and innovative actions over many months off Africa and along the Normandy coast; while John Bridge, a physics teacher turned mine- and bomb-disposal officer, repeatedly practised his nerve-racking skills for six years, always aware that there were no second chances if things went wrong. Behind enemy lines the sangfroid and sheer endurance of clandestine operatives like Major Hugh Seagrim in occupied Burma and Violette Szabo in occupied France showed a daunting, almost mysterious form of courage; and on the home front two railwaymen risked their lives to save a small country town from devastation when their ammunition train caught fire.”Notes: Size: 8¾" x 5½".
