Planned Beef Production by Stephen Williams; C. David Edgar; (£18.00)Publisher: Crosby Lockwood & Son — 1966Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good+ — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Ex-library with few marks. Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the edges with a rough nearly closed tear to the leading edge of the lower panel. Heavily faded at the spine of the dust wrapper. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “THE production of beef cattle is complex and is becoming increasingly so. Technical changes have been applied to the once simple matter of having herds of breeding cattle in some places and yards of fattening bullocks in others. Sometimes they were on the same farm, but often there was a considerable distance between them and this was bridged by the cattle dealer and the store market. New concepts of breeding by artificial insemination led to the replacement of some dual-purpose cattle by some others. The reds and the roans became black and white, or just black; and the buffs are now making an appearance. Physical and chemical methods of dehorning have jostled with genetic advances in polling. Competition between the churn stand and the calf pen in a period of falling milk prices led to early weaning in its various guises and to the greater use of milk substitutes and the earlier feeding of concentrates. Multiple suckling, carefully supervised by expensive labour, has led to mass suckling with labour charges spread over more cattle. More recently there have been interesting developments with barley fed and battery beef with forage flowing untouched from silo to stock, a trickle of concentrates being fed on the way. The time has come for an appraisal of the multitude of methods in beef production and the many differing ideas regarding suitable breeds down to the introduction of the Charolais.”Notes: Size: 8¾" x 5½". The Bleak Age: Based On The Age Of The Chartists by J. L. Hammond; Barbara Hammond; (£17.00)Publisher: Longmans, Green & Co. — 1934Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Good — in Poor Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with loss at the head of the spine and a generally worn appearance. Leans heavily. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned.Description: From the cover: “The first half of the 19th Century may well be named “The Bleak Age” or “The Age of Discontent”. In this acute study the Hammonds illumine the dark places in the lives and hearts of the Working People of that time and by a brilliant comparison with the conditions of other times bring out the underlying causes of this discontent. This is a wise book and one to be read by all who wish to understand the root causes of our social troubles and so be the better able to judge the many remedies that are to-day being put forward for the future ordering of this country.”Notes: Size: 7" x 4¾". English Country Life, 1780-1830 by E. W. Bovill (£12.00)Publisher: London, New York & Toronto: Oxford University Press — 1962Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good+ — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and the top corners of the boards with commensurate wear to the dust wrapper. Leans a little. Price Clipped. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Contains: Black & white plates;

From the cover: “This book, by the author of The England of Nimrod and Surtees 1815-1854, has a slightly earlier starting point and perhaps a more general appeal. There was no more formative period than this in the history of English country life. In agriculture and transport every civilized country modelled itself on the new methods and discoveries of British farmers and engineers. The domestic influences of these changes were profound. They gave the landscape its present form and country life a pattern which altered little for a hundred years, and which still governs the way of life of many a countryman. The period has been closely studied by social historians, but chiefly in the wider context of the Industrial Revolution. The author’s purpose here is to present studies of certain aspects of country life which seem to him to merit closer attention than they have so far received. Thus, in chapters on, among other things, enclosure and consequent hardships, the squires, servants, travelling and the state of the roads, guns, poaching, and the coming of the railway, a mosaic of related studies is built up to give in broad outline a vivid and fascinating picture of English country life between 1780 and 1830. Quotation both from contemporary fiction and from magazines, memoirs, letters, and newspapers, by Cobbett, John Byng, William Howitt, Mary Mitford, Surtees, Dickens and others, brings very close the feel of many aspects of country life at that time.”

From the cover: “The SAS mission conducted behind Iraqi lines is one of the most famous stories of courage and survival in modern warfare. Of the eight members of the SAS regiment who set off, only one escaped capture. This is his story.

Late in the evening of 24 January 1991 the patrol was compromised deep behind enemy lines in Iraq. A fierce fire-fight left the eight men miraculously unscathed, but they were forced to run for their lives. Their aim was to reach the Syrian border, 120 kilometres to the north-west, but during the first night the patrol accidentally broke into two groups, five and three.

Chris Ryan found himself left with two companions. Nothing had prepared them for the vicious cold of the desert winter, and they began to suffer from hypothermia. During the night one of the men was to disappear in a blinding blizzard. Then the next day a goat-herd walked on top of the two survivors. Chris’s remaining partner, thinking the Arab friendly, went off with him in search of food, and never returned.

Left on his own, Chris Ryan beat off another Iraqi attack and set out alone. His greatest adventures were only just beginning…

The One That Got Away is a breathtaking story of extraordinary courage under fire, of hairbreadth escapes, of the best trained soldiers in the world fighting against the most adverse conditions, and, above all, of one man’s courageous refusal to lie down and die..”

Wedmore's Moors and The Enclosure Acts of the Eighteenth Century: Together with Some Records of the Parish Relating to this Subject and Period by Cuthbert Arthur Rose (£8.50)Publisher: Wedmore: Cuthbert Arthur Rose — 1982Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0950832103]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper, with a couple of small dings to the upper panel which is spotted on the verso. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Contains: Black & white photographs; Tables; Plans;

From the cover: “The Isle of Wedmore has been fortunate in its local historians — local in both senses of the word: individuals who have lived in and grown to know Wedmore, and who have shown in their historical writing that the more one explores the history of one’s own place, the more there is to find.

Mr Cuthbert Rose is continuing a tradition set by earlier Wedmore residents such as Reverend S A H Hervey and W Marston Acres. He has concentrated his attention on the written record of one of the major events in its history: the 18th century Enclosure Acts which ended the existence of the literal ‘Isle’ of Wedmore. The culmination of drainage efforts since medieval times, these moorland Enclosure Acts are quite distinct from the arable enclosures of historical textbooks. They did not merely change an existing agricultural landscape — they created a totally new one, from what had been, in historical times at least, waterlogged marshes of alder thicket and reedbed, seasonal patches of rough pasture and open expanses of flood-prone wasteland. They altered, rapidly and radically, the whole balance of the farming economy of Wedmore — and recorded the process of that alteration in minute detail. They marked the end of the island nature of Wedmore, although not of the distinctive, self contained character of the place which had been moulded by the comparative isolation and independence of so many previous centuries, and which, one likes to think, remains such an attraction today.”
