Nicholas and Alexandra: The Family Albums by Prince Michael of Greece (£77.00)Publisher: Tauris Parke Books — 1996Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 1850434948]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper which is very slightly pulled at the head of the upper panel and a short, closed, tear to the foot of the same. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black and White Photographs;

From the cover: “In the summer of 1918, Tsar Nicholas II, his Tsarina Alexandra and their five children were executed by firing squad at Ekaterinburg. The unique and revealing photographs in this book illustrate the intimate family life of the last ruling Romanovs from 1896, shortly after the marriage of Nicholas and Alexandra, to the family’s house arrest at Tsarskoye Selo palace in 1917, shortly before their death. These photographs have been selected from thousands taken by the Tsarina and her five children, which were mounted in their own and the Tsar’s personal albums. The albums have until now remained hidden for over seventy years in government archives in Moscow.

Whilst researching his book Imperial Palaces of Russia in the Autumn of 1990, Prince Michael of Greece was puzzled by an invitation to view material in the government archives. Thirty thick, leather-bound volumes, embossed with the Imperial monogram, awaited him -the private photograph albums, which the curators wanted to show first to a relative of the Romanov family.

Through his selection of images from the family albums, the author here tells the story of the last Tsar, one of the saddest of twentieth-century politics. Nicholas II was a man both unprepared and ill equipped to rule the greatest empire in the world, and under the influence of Alexandra, the wife he so adored, he led Russia to disaster. But theirs was also an extraordinary love story, as the three hundred photographs in this book reveal. Away from the responsibilities of Empire, we see a close and loving family of simple tastes and great candour. The photographs clearly illustrate the personalities of Nicholas and Alexandra and of their four daughters -Olga, Tatiana, Maria and Anastasia — and beloved son and heir Alexis, who suffered from haemophilia and whose every move was carefully watched.

The family were keen, and sometimes talented, amateur photographers, who took their own cameras with them everywhere, be it on family picnics or on state occasions. The book thus illustrates a fascinating transition from the joy and relaxation of the early years, through the tension caused by the Tsarevich’s illness, to the stresses and anxiety of the First World War and the coming Revolution. These photographs provide a new perspective on the life of the Imperial family, and constitute an invaluable historical document.”

Modern French Painters by R. H. Wilenski (£24.50)Publisher: Faber & Faber — 1954Binding: Hardback Condition: Very Good. Boards gently faded and rubbed. Lower board very slightly sprung. Previous owners inscription to ffep. Text bright and tight.Description: 3rd Edition. Blue cloth with gilt on red title plate to the spine. Colour and B&W plates. This book is an attempt to tell the story of modem French painting as developed by the Impressionists and subsequent adventurers in the last seventy-five years in Paris. The story begins, properly speaking, with the foundation of the Salon des Independants in 1884; but it is preceded by a Prologue starting in 1863 when Napoleon III created the Salon des Refuses where Manet’s Dejeuner sur 1’herbe (now an object of respectful veneration in the Louvre) was described as an affront to decency and the work of a vulgar self-advertiser or a man afflicted with disquieting taints; and it continues to the present day though it does not end there, because the stream of modern French painting is still flowing and there must be, as the phrase goes, ‘as good fish in the water as ever came out of it’.Notes: Size: 11" x 7½". 424 pages. When Men Had Time to Love by Baroness [Agnes] de Stoeckl; Wilfrid S. Edwards; (£14.50)Publisher: John Murray — 1953Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good+ — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Edges of the dust wrapper frayed at the spine ends and corners, a little dulled. Leans slightly. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned.Description: Illustrated / decorative end papers. Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “ON the 30th January, 1853, at Notre-Dame, Eugénie de Montijo married Napoleon III. The words of the gypsy came true. "La Montijo" ascended the throne as Empress of the French. And so began the legend of the Second Empire: an epic dazzling in the history of Paris; an epoch glittering in the worlds of art, science, and fashion. Winterhalter; Offenbach; Pasteur; Dumas Pere and Dumas Fils. With the Empire at its zenith there came to the Parisian boulevards an unknown Englishman whose ambition was to revolutionize fashion. He succeeded. His name was Worth! Comparable only in fashionable success was the fantastic Doctor Evans, dentist to the Empress. Improbably romantic, the fame of this dentist blazed to its height when, revolution at the door, he organized the Empress’s flight to the coast and England.

In the shadow of German victory and the new Republic a new world crowded out the old. And so Paris danced madly to the fin de siècle. The new fashion was all speed — ‘faster, faster, said the Red Queen’ — and men no longer had time to love. The Baroness de Stoeckl once again gives a sparkling picture of a vanished world.”

Catherine The Great: A Biography Of The Empress Of All The Russias by Zoé Oldenbourg (£11.50)Publisher: Heinemann — 1965Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with a snag at the head of the spine. Leans slightly. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: First British Edition. [First Published: Editions Gallimard, 1965] Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “Oldenbourg’s story of Russia’s incredible empress is far more exciting than most novels, infinitely better written than most histories. But it is not the politics of Catherine’s reign that Mme Oldenbourg has sought to depict in this book; it is the woman who became empress that she has brought to life. By concentrating on Catherine’s early years, Zoé Oldenbourg has succeeded in explaining a woman who had remained an enigma, even to her biographers. The story is one of incredible tension; intrigue upon intrigue followed the minor German princess who intended, somehow, to reach the throne. The conflict was such that Catherine had to rule or to perish. The eventual murder of her husband, her dizzying succession of lovers, were only the outward scandalous appurtenances of a court and an era that were still shockingly brutal and primitive, Zoé Oldenbourg has captured the full majesty of this tragedy, played against the setting of Moscow’s and St. Petersburg’s imperial palaces. Extravagant and grotesque, this is none the less a moving human story.”Notes: Size: 8¾" x 5¾". Black boards with Silver titling to the Spine. 311 pages. A Lifelong Passion: Nicholas and Alexandra: Their Own Story by Andrei Maylunas & Sergei Mironenko (£10.50)Publisher: Weidenfeld & Nicolson — 1996Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0753800446]Condition: Good. A pleasant enough reading copy. Leans. A slightly dog-eared copy, notably only to the upper wrap and first few pages.Description: Illustrated with colour photographs. From the cover: “Our story goes like this: once upon a time, there lived a charming and kind young prince, the heir to a large and rich kingdom, covering one sixth of the world. He fell in love with a beautiful faraway princess. He married her and became king. They loved each other passionately and had five children. One would expect them to live happily ever after. But they could not escape their fate. They were doomed, their bloodline was cursed. The fairy tale turned into tragedy. This is the story of a family, a very special family and a very special story. The last Romanovs to rule Russia are among the best documented people in history. Their lives coincided with the beginnings of the age of mass media, and being the rulers of one sixth of the world, they were of course the focus of attention for the then young media. Tabloids, postcards, illustrated magazines, countless books (every one of their contemporaries who knew them — or not — seems to have published a book), early cinema (we sat through thirty hours of live footage of the family, most official and formal, but some private and moving). As for themselves - for people who lived a hundred years ago, they were surprisingly modern. Being an international couple, they spoke and wrote English to each other, they played tennis and took photos (theirs is among the first do-it-yourself snap-shot photography). Every member of the family, children included, had a camera and being rich — photography was then a very expensive hobby — they left us about 150,000 photographs of themselves, not counting all the pictures taken of them by others.”Notes: Size: Trade Paperback (9¼" x 6"). 667 pages. Architecture by David Jacobs (£10.50)Publisher: Newsweek Books — 1974Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0882251074]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and top corners with commensurate ruffling to the dust wrapper. Pages very gently age-tanned.Description: Illustrated with colour photographs. From the cover: “THE STORY OF BUILDING, writes the author of this penetrating study, starts the way stories of so many of mankind’s enterprises start — “speculatively, and in the almost immeasurably distant past”. But it would be an exasperating experience to trace the evolution of mud huts into pyramids, Greek temples, and Gothic cathedrals. Instead, he invites the reader to separate buildings for shelter from buildings as artistic statements. In an instant, we see architecture as a badge of civilization, “the requisite sign, the certain credential without which a society cannot be called civilized”. Architecture has some 170 illustrations, more than a third in full colour. Stunning modern photographs are juxtaposed with plans, cross sections, scale models, and historic views to form a vivid counterpoint to the authoritative text. A special, twenty-four page section, “Architects on Architecture”, contains excerpts from the writings of Louis H. Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier and Eero Saarinen, among others. A five-page chronology relates events in the history of architecture to other cultural and political developments, while a selected bibliography and a full index make this a valuable reference work.”Notes: Size: 10½" x 7½". A Concise History of England: From Stonehenge to the Microchip by F. E. Halliday (£9.50)Publisher: Thames & Hudson — 1980Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0500271828]Condition: Very Good. Gently faded at the spine and onto the marins of the wraps otherwise a very well presented copy.Description: Revised Reprint. [First: 1964] Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “Now been revised and updated for this paperback edition to take account of the most recent events. The author aims to present the history of England in a form short enough to be grasped — and seen — as a whole. Like all nations, England has a past which includes crimes and follies, but it is also one that is less turbulent than most and one displaying a series of achievements — above all, perhaps, the evolution of democratic institutions and the creation of a social order that has been strengthened by extensions of liberty, tolerance and freedom of speech. The book emphasizes the constructive features of English history and clearly identifies the central theme — the successful reconciliation of order and liberty in English life and society. Stonehenge, the Norman Conguest, Magna Carta, the Wars of the Roses, the Spanish Armada, the Civil Wars, the ‘Year of Victories’, Nelson and Trafalgar, Churchill as war leader — here are the key events, places and personalities of English history, brought together in a superbly illustrated volume which provides the perfect introduction to a fascinating subject.”Notes: Size: 9" x 7". 240 pages. Turning the Tide: Decisive Battles Of The Second World War by Nigel Cawthorne (£6.50)Publisher: Index — 2004Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 9781841931128]Condition: Near Fine.Description: From the cover: “The Second World War was the final global conflict of the twentieth century. It involved more combatants, and a wider range of battlefield terrain than any other conflict in history, from the frozen plains of Russia to the baking Libyan Desert, and from the atolls of the Pacific to the skies over Britain. In Turning the Tide, Nigel Cawthorne has taken a fresh look at the crucial battles which decided the outcome of the Second World War, beginning with the evacuation of Dunkirk in 1940, a feat that boosted the morale of a nation during its darkest hour, and reaching a climactic end with the final bloody reckoning between the Red Army and the Third Reich amongst the ruins of Berlin.”Notes: Size: B Format (7¾" x 5¼"). 240 pages.
