Jackson Pollock by Kirk Varnedoe with Pepe Karmel (£26.00)Publisher: London: The Tate Gallery — 1999Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 1854372769]Condition: Very Good. Lightly pulled at the head of the upper wrapper otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: Contains: Black & white photographs; Chronological tables; Colour photographs;

From the cover: “Jackson Pollock is widely considered the most challenging and influential American artist of the twentieth century. In his revolutionary paintings of the late 1940s, he dripped or poured paint into complex webs of interlacing lines, rhythmically punctuated by pools of colour. With their all over composition, seemingly total abstraction, and gestural but remarkably controlled handling of paint, these powerful works announced the emergence of Abstract Expressionism.

This sumptuously illustrated book accompanies the major Pollock exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Tate Gallery, London, in 1998-99. The Tate exhibition is the first full survey of Pollock’s work to be shown in Britain in forty years. An essay by Kirk Varnedoe explores Pollock’s life, the mythology that so quickly grew up around him as the prototypical “action painter”, and the critical interpretations of his legacy. It traces the development of his work from European and American models, and discusses his powerful impact on later artists. Pepe Karmel’s innovative study of Hans Namuth’s photographs and films of Pollock at work offers new insight into the genesis of Pollock’s paintings.

Jackson Pollock includes over 200 colour reproductions of paintings, drawings, and prints, including life-sized details and foldouts of major paintings. An illustrated chronology tells the story of the artist’s life.”

Designing Pictorial Symbols by Nigel Holmes; Rose DeNeve (£20.50)Publisher: Watson-Guptill — 1985Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0823013278]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently faded at the spine of the dust wrapper, top corners of both panels slightly rubbed with a small puncture to the lower panel near the spine. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: From the cover: “THIS BOOK appeals to the basic creative search of designers for original approaches as it shows in practical, easy-to-follow steps, the conceptual thinking and artistic follow through needed to create effective pictorial symbols. Graphic designers, illustrators, editors, and others who, are responsible for presenting information in a compact, instantly recognizable form will find invaluable, proven methods and fresh results developed by one of the world’s best and most widely known graphic designers.

The book begins with a fascinating introduction that traces the emergence of pictorial symbols from the first abstract strokes cut 50,000 years ago by our ancestors into bone or rock, to the development of written symbols, the use of trademarks, and today’s spreading use of pictorial symbols in cars, on roadways, and in transportation terminals to bring international understanding to a world separated by hundreds of languages.

The second section consists of symbols used in recent years in Time magazine. These cover an enormous range of subject matter touching nearly every aspect of human endeavour — from entertainment to electoral politics, from sports and crime to energy, disarmament, and war.

The third section describes the intricate, creative process that marked the famous American Renewal print campaign symbol used by Time, Life, Fortune, Sports Illustrated, People, Money, and Discover magazines as a common thread for a series of magazine articles on the revival of the American Dream.

In the fourth section, you will see the process and solutions to the challenging assignment of presenting some twenty sports symbols that must be fresh in themselves, but also different each year, as used to identify sports broadcasts in the official English ‘TV/radio guide, Radio Times.

A rich gallery of annotated examples makes up the book’s fifth section.”

Indian Gaming & Tribal Sovereignty: The Casino Compromise by Steven Andrew Light & Kathryn R. L. Rand (£18.00)Publisher: University Press of Kansas — 2005Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0700614060]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: From the cover: “From Connecticut to California, Native American tribes have entered the gambling business, some making money and nearly all igniting controversy. The image of the “casino Indian” is everywhere. Some observers suspect corruption or criminal ties, or have doubts about tribal authenticity. Many tribes disagree, contending that Indian gaming has strengthened tribal governments and vastly improved the quality of reservation life for American Indians.

This book provides the clearest and most complete account to date of the laws and politics of Indian gaming. Steven Light and Kathryn Rand explain how it has become one of today’s most politically charged phenomena: at stake are a host of competing legal rights and political interests for tribal, state, and federal governments. As Indian gaming grows, policymakers struggle with balancing its economic and social costs and benefits.

Light and Rand emphasize that tribal sovereignty is the very rationale that allows Indian gaming to exist, even though U. S. law subjects that sovereignty to strict congressional authority and compromised it even further through the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act of 1988. Their book describes Indian gaming and explores today’s hottest political issues, from the Pequots to the Plains Indians, with examples that reflect a wide range of tribal experience: from hugely successful casinos to gambling halls with small markets and low grosses to tribes that chose not to pursue gaming. Throughout, they contend that tribal sovereignty is the key to understanding Indian gaming law and politics and guiding policy reform — and that Indian gaming even represents a unique opportunity for the emergence of tribal self-determination.

As political pressure on tribes to concede to state interests grows, this book offers a practical approach to policy reform with specific recommendations for tribal, federal, state, and local policymakers. Meticulously argued, Indian Gaming and Tribal Sovereignty provides an authoritative look at one of today’s most vexing issues, showing that it’s possible to establish a level playing field for all concerned while recognizing the measure of sovereignty — and fairness — to which American Indians are entitled.”

Marching on Together: My Life at Leeds United by Eddie Gray with Jason Tomas (£17.00)Publisher: London: Hodder & Stoughton — 2001Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Signed by the Author.[ISBN: 0340819758]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Price Clipped. Pages very gently age-tanned. Description: Signed by the author on the title page — unverified and reflected as such in the lack of premium. Contains: Black & white photographs; Colour photographs;

From the cover: “A fascinating account of an extraordinary career — Eddie Gray and his life at Leeds.

Eddie Gray is synonymous with Leeds United. One of the most skilful and exciting players in the club’s history, his links with the club have been further strengthened by his roles as |manager, youth team coach, reserve team coach and now assistant manager.

Here he talks candidly about his childhood in Glasgow, the development of his skills as a boy and his determination to succeed as a footballer. Widely looked upon as a player in the same class as George Best and Jimmy Johnstone, the performance for which he is best remembered came in the 1970 FA Cup Final against Chelsea, when his dribbling skills won him the Man of the Match award.

Providing a unique insight into the factors behind Leeds’ emergence as a major player in European football under the management of Don Revie, Gray discusses his experiences under five subsequent managers, and his own period of time in the job.

No less intriguing is Gray’s account of his life in the ten years he was not affiliated with Leeds, and the resurgence of Leeds and himself since he returned there in 1995.”

The largest section deals with Test cricket from its inception. Every series played is described, from the first in 1877 to the Australian visit to England in 1985 — from Charles Bannerman’s 165 not out which won the first-ever Test match for Australia, to the great batting of David Gower which won back the Ashes 108 years later.

The World Cup and other one-day international matches are also described in their various sections. Cricket history is reviewed from the mists of pre-Hambledon days, through professionalism, county cricket, and the emergence of the MCC to the rapid growth of one-day cricket in the 1960s.

A Gallery of Great Players highlights the careers of nearly 200 of the best cricketers from W. G. Grace to lan Botham, Viv Richards and Allan Border, with extended biographies and full career figures for 67 of them.

A comprehensive records section completes the book. Over 200,000 words and over 450 pictures, many in full colour, provide readers with hours of enjoyment: replaying the matches, reliving the careers of the players, comparing the records and feats of the immortals.

The book is a splendid read and an invaluable source of reference for all cricket fans.”

Truancy by Barry Turner (£14.50)Publisher: Ward Lock Educational — 1974Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0706234049]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the edges. Previous owners' inscription to the pastedown scribbled out. Edges of the text block lightly tanned.Description: From the cover: “« I think school is boring — I don’t know why. Everybody knows school is terrible only I’m the only one who stays away ».

« I used to dread going in if we’d got English because I couldn’t do it. So I got ill and said I had the bellyache or toothache, and I got my Mum to write notes on days we had English ».

« School bored me silly. I used to feel superior to the other kids and to the teachers as well, because they talked to us as if we were children. I was playing games at school, and I wanted to be myself ».

These are just three of the thousands of children who are marked absent on the school register. What makes them special is that they are habitual truants and truancy has acquired the status of a social and educational crisis.

In Truancy the contributors break down the problem into three major areas. Maurice Tyerman, Paul Williams, Ken Fogelman and Ken Richardson try to pinpoint who the truants are and the extent of the problem. Dr Rhodes Boyson, Frank Harris, Jeremy Seabrook and Dr Jack Kahn analyse the main causes of truancy, examine individual cases and discuss some of the possible remedies. Finally Frank Coombes, Anna Sproule, Ruth Brandon and Julia McGuinness look at what is already being done to cope with the problem — the education welfare officer’s role, the local authority experiments in London and Liverpool and the emergence of the free school movement.”

Clean Clothes On Sunday by Celia Davies (£13.00)Publisher: Terence Dalton — 1974Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 9780900963599]Condition: Good+ — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine ends and the top corners of the boards with a little wear to the dust wrapper as a result. Gently faded at the spine of the dust wrapper with some scuffs toward the tail. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Black & White Drawings;

From the cover: “Clean Clothes on Sunday was symptomatic of an era now past. Celia Davies was born in 1902 and she provides a vivid picture of her life in Edwardian England. She carries her story on beyond that August in 1914 when the whole social structure changed for ever. Until she was seven years of age she lived at Woodford Green in Essex and the first part of the narrative revolves around that neighbourhood and her immediate family. Later she moved to Hoddesdon in Hertfordshire and as she became more aware of her surroundings the story widens into an account of early schooling, visits to the Zoo and other outings.

She tells how her father’s family had farmed in Bow with the Mile End Road as a boundary to their land and of her mother’s ancestors, amongst them a Master of Clare College during the reign of Charles I.

This is an entertaining account of a small girl growing up during the first two decades of this century and her emergence as a modern girl into the Brave New World.”

Digital Fantasy Painting Workshop by Martin McKenna (£13.00)Publisher: Harper Design International — 2004Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0060724323]Condition: Very Good. Description: From the cover: “Fantasy painting has a long tradition. It went through one stylistic revolution in the 1980s, with the widespread adoption of the airbrush. And in the last decade, with the emergence of Photoshop and 3D modelling and rendering applications, it has gone through another. Digital tools and techniques have made it easier for artists to realize their visions, and the images that they are now able to create are more vivid, more realistic, and more compelling as a result.

Digital Fantasy Painting Workshop tackles the three main categories within the genre-fantasy, science fiction, and horror-and includes detailed step-by-step work-throughs to show how the images are produced. Featuring work from some of the world’s leading fantasy artists, the book explores the emerging “tradigital” mix of traditional and digital skills.

Digital Fantasy Painting Workshop is an essential book, both for those working in the area of fantasy art, and for anybody who simply admires the work of skilled fantasy illustrators.”

Great Battle Fleets by Oliver Warner (£12.50)Publisher: London, New York, Sydney, Totonto: Hamlyn — 1973Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0600339130]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little faded at the spine and somewhat dull overall. Boards faded at the margins. Text complete, clean and tight. Price Clipped. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Colour Plates; Black & White Plates; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “The era of the battle fleet is over. Never again will mighty surface fleets clash on the high seas. From the sixteenth century to the Second World War, when battle fleets faced each other, the fate of nations hung in the balance. The westward thrust of Islam was checked by the Spanish and Venetians at Lepanto in 1571; the United States owes her emergence as a nation in part to the action of the French fleet off Chesapeake Bay in 1781; in 1942 at Midway the fate of Japan was sealed in a titanic struggle between the two most powerful fleets ever to oppose each other.

In this book the distinguished naval historian Oliver Warner tells the stories of the Spanish, Elizabethan, Dutch and Swedish fleets, of the fleet of France and Nelson’s fleet, of the Imperial Japanese fleet, the British Grand Fleet, the German High Seas Fleet and the United States fleet. He describes each at its zenith, detailing also its origins and later history. He tells of the commanders, the fighting men, the engagements and above all of the ships themselves: the Venetian galleasses, Nelson’s ships of the line, the early ironclads and the revolutionary Dreadnoughts.

The wide range of illustrations in colour and black-and-white capture the drama and heroics of the battles and the majesty of the great ships and fleets at sea. Together, text and pictures combine to make this an important and highly attractive book, presenting as it does a broad view of the distribution of sea power over the last five hundred years.”

Japan and World Trade: The Years Ahead by Haruko Fukuda (£12.50)Publisher: Farnborough: Saxon House — 1973Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0347010105]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded. Price Clipped. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Description: Illustrated by way of: Tables;

From the cover: “A concise yet comprehensive description of Japan’s aims in developing her world trading image is long overdue. Western politicians and commercial and industrial interests have for years been trying to understand the domestic and international considerations which set the pattern for Japan’s expansion. They have also sought clarification of the country’s policy concerning imports.

This invigorating study sets out to examine, first of all, the causes of the country’s emergence as a giant economic power, and then analyses her future trading policies. The conclusion reached by the author is that an enlarged EEC is bound to effect Japan’s trading pattern, as will the establishment of a Pacific trading bloc in which she would be a dominant factor. Moreover, the continuing commercial rapport between Japan and Eastern Europe and the Third World requires that Japan maintain her rate of development.”

Paul Revere's Ride by David Hackett Fischer (£12.50)Publisher: Oxford University Press — 1995Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0195098315]Condition: Good. A pleasant enough reading copy. Single reading crease to the spine. Lightly rubbed at the tips of the wrappers. Scattered researcher's highlighting throughout. Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. First in this, paperback, edition. From the cover: “Paul Revere’s midnight ride looms as an almost mythical event in American history — yet it has been largely ignored by scholars and left to patriotic writers and debunkers. Now one of the foremost American historians offers the first full-scale history of this monumental event.

In Paul Revere’s Ride, David Hackett Fischer fashions an exciting narrative that offers deep insight into the outbreak of revolution and the emergence of the American republic. Beginning in the years before the war, Fischer illuminates the figure of Paul Revere, a man far more complex than the simple artisan and messenger of tradition. Drawing on intensive new research, Fischer guides readers through the world of Boston’s revolutionary movement, recreates the fateful events of April 18th, and provides a fresh interpretation of the battle that began the war at Lexington and Concord.

Returning Paul Revere to center stage in these critical events, Paul Revere’s Ride captures both the drama and the underlying developments in a triumphant return to narrative history at its finest..”

The Encyclopaedia of Modern History by Edited by James Clark (£12.50)Publisher: Hamlyn — 1978Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0600331849]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently faded at the spine of the dust wrapper. Edges of the text block lightly tanned with light tanning spots to the start and finish. Text complete, clean and tight otherwise.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF MODERN HISTORY answers the ‘when’ arid ‘why’ questions that so often arise in discussions about modern affairs. It can also be read as a compact survey of the two hundred fascinating, complicated years that have made the world what it is since the American and French Revolutions.

The range of this book is global and each country or region is given thorough and consecutive treatment. It opens when the initiative for change still lay firmly with the West. The French Revolution, the rise of Napoleon and the reaction to his domination were succeeded by the rise of the Nationalists and Reformers which accompanied the decay of the old Habsburg and Turkish empires. At this point, the development of American democracy and the terrible crisis of the Civil War are covered.

There follow the expansion of Britain as a major colonial power and the development of the overseas empires — the launching of China and Japan as modern nations and then the traumatic years of armed conflict in Europe and the gradual domination of the world by that industrial super-power: the USA. The two World Wars are examined in detail, as are the Depression, the rise of Hitler and the beginnings of the atomic age when Europe began to lose its importance in world affairs. The final part of the book shows the gradual emergence of America and Russia as the two great nuclear rivals, and charts the decline of Britain and the many conflicts in the Middle East, Africa and South East Asia that have followed in the wake of decolonization. The story continues right up to 1978.

This is an invaluable work of reference for the whole family.”

How to Avoid the Future by Gordon Rattray Taylor (£10.50)Publisher: Secker & Warburg — 1975Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: From the cover: “Is civilisation cracking up — and, if so, what should we be doing about it? How serious are the problems of inflation, energy and resource shortage, climate change, food supply and population growth, of which we have heard so much, and how successfully are we tackling them ? What, in fact, does the immediate future hold?

These are the kind of questions Gordon Rattray Taylor deals with in this book. Surveying a wide range of predictions made by eminent futurologists about the immediate future, he concludes that the really urgent problem is one which has been generally overlooked: the growth of social turbulence and the decay of social cohesion, evidenced by the increasing frequency and savagery of terrorism, kidnapping, hijacking, torture and other forms of anti-social behaviour which are daily reported.

The collapse of the Roman Empire suggests that such symptoms, along with inflation and loss of confidence in government, do indeed precede the end of a civilisation.

Probing the sociological and psychological factors underlying and causing these trends, Taylor concludes that the structure of our society must be changed, and our patterns of social behaviour modified, if collapse is to be averted. Major shifts in official policy are called for. He also proposes concrete steps to improve the quality of government — steps which are radical, not to say controversial. And he warns that if we continue on our present course, the emergence of some kind of totalitarianism, in a forcible attempt to hold society together, is inevitable.

Against this background of a coming social collapse Taylor examines the more insistent problems that dominate today’s headlines, and charts possible courses for the future by confronting the potential of tomorrow.”

Man and The Stars: Contact and Communication With Other Intelligence by Duncan Lunan (£10.50)Publisher: Book Club Associates — 1974Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Very Good — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with slightly heavier fading at the spine. Edges of the text block lightly tanned.Description: Illustrated with colour photographs. From the cover: “Contact with civilisations from another galaxy has been a science-fiction dream for nearly a century — but what if it were happening today ? Duncan Lunan believes, with Arthur C. Clarke, that man’s emergence into space is the most important step in evolution since life on Earth left the seas for dry land. He sees man’s exploration of space as his only alternative to regression, and he believes that we should start preparing ourselves for it. In 1972, as President of the Association in Scotland for Technology and Research in Astronautics (ASTRA), he chaired a series of discussions on interstellar travel, led by experts in the technology, astronomy, logistics and psychology of space exploration. The discussions examined the probable aims, means and problems of an Earth programme to find other planets suitable for life, to set up colonies there, and make possible contact with other civilisations. The findings of the conference led to the writing of this book, which reads like science fiction, yet keeps reminding us that the miracle is possible for man. The chapter on space navigation — involving time dilation due to relativity-effect, faster-than-light travel and ‘holes in space’ — is as liberating to the imagination as Kubrick’s ‘2001’. Before the book was complete, however, an extraordinary development took place. Lunan was able to decipher a set of mysterious radio signals received in the 1920’s, as a series of star maps, apparently transmitted by a space-probe circling the earth. The messages pointed to an origin in the constellation Bootes 13,000 years ago — from a planet long uninhabitable. Had he stumbled upon an SOS signal from a civilisation searching for another home before its own planet burned up in the heat of its expanding sun? Did those far-off intelligences found their colony in time? Are they even now possessed of the knowledge that we exist ? Man and the Stars not only analyses these mind-blowing possibilities, but links them with possible evidence from the past that space-ships from Epsilon-Bootis have been here before. Contact with other intelligences, Lunan insists, can be a liberating adventure — or a disaster. Preparation must begin now.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". The Rise of Life: The First 3.5 Billion Years by John Reader (£10.50)Publisher: Collins — 1986Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0002194392]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the spine ends and corners with resultant slight wear to the dust wrapper. Boards slightly faded at the margins. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated with colour photographs. From the cover: “What was the Earth really like hundreds of millions of years ago? And how did life begin? Was it seeded from outer space, as some scientists believe, or was its potential inherent in the Earth’s constituent material?

From the first cell to the emergence of man, John Reader presents the history of life as a fascinating detective story. The clues are provided by the men and women who have devoted their lives to the search for knowledge, both out in the field hunting for fossil evidence, and back in the studies and laboratories where the theories were painstakingly developed. Rivalries, antagonisms and the problem of reconciling religious belief with scientific theory enrich this story and bring it vividly to life.

As the milestones of evolution are described — the first multicellular organisms, the first backbone, the first fish, the first land animals — a host of intriguing questions are examined. For example, why did the dinosaurs, the ‘fearfully great lizards’, disappear completely after ruling the Earth for around 140 million years? Why also did some primitive branches of the human tree become extinct? And, since the logical sequence of cause and effect is unlikely to come to a halt, what will be the next stage in the development of vertebrates?

To complement this compelling text, John Gurche’s unique illustrations make the reader feel he is there, as an observer, witnessing the great changes that have taken place since life began on Earth..”

William Walton: Behind The Façade by Susana Walton (£10.50)Publisher: Oxford University Press — 1988Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0193151561]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Top edges of text block lightly spotted. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “Buenos Aires, Argentina, 1948. The 46-year-old English composer William Walton, rising genius of English music, composer of Facade, Belshazzar’s Feast, a superb Symphony, and a host of other brilliant works, arrives to attend an international conference of the Performing Right Society. Miss Susana Gil, the attractive 22-year-old daughter of a well-to-do Argentine lawyer, is the personal assistant to the representative of the British Council and has organized a press conference for the distinguished visitor. Walton, unmarried but not noted for his celibacy, is asked by a journalist what he thinks of Argentine women. Looking directly at the glamorous Miss Gil, he replies: ‘I think so highly of them that I intend to... meet lots of them!’ Only fear of causing too much of a stir (a rather untypical reticence) prevented him from saying ‘I intend to marry one’. After only two weeks he and Miss Gil were engaged, much against the wishes of her family and much to the alarm of Walton’s friends and colleagues in London, who were deeply suspicious of ‘love at first sight’. Yet unpredictability and luck had already played a large part in Walton’s life, from his admission as a nine-year-old Lancashire schoolboy to Christ Church Choir School in Oxford; his discovery by Sacheverell Sitwell while an undergraduate at Oxford; his adoption by all three Sitwells; the emergence of a publisher willing to back his individual music; and the unsolicited and often unexpected offers of support from wealthy admirers. Walton’s instinct for self-preservation did not fail him in his choice of bride, for Susana Valeria Rosa Maria Gil Passo, to give the author her full name, proved and remained the ideal partner with whom Walton could fulfil a plan that had been in his mind before their marriage: to leave England and live in Italy. Shortly after settling in his house in London, they rented an old convent in Forio, on the island of Ischia in the Bay of Naples, loaded up Walton’s treasured Bentley with the essentials for a six-month visit, and took up residence in a property of considerable charm but few comforts. Ischia would become their home for the rest of Walton’s life (he died in 1983), and their joint creation, the magnificent house and garden of La Mortella, is now to become a Walton arts centre and recital hall for the further development of talented young musicians. Susana Walton has created an affectionate and revealing portrait of one of England’s greatest composers. Written with an engaging candour, her memories of 35 years of marriage are alive with colourful anecdotes of some of the people who featured prominently in Walton’s life. There are vivid pen portraits of the Sitwells, Imma von Doernberg, Alice Wimborne, Laurence Olivier, Malcolm Sargent, Benjamin Britten, Wystan Auden, Yehudi Menuhin, Julian Bream, and many other musicians and personalities prominent in contemporary history.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". In The Footsteps of Moses by Moshe Pearlman (£9.50)Publisher: Oliphant — 1976Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0551007575]Condition: Good. A pleasant enough reading copy. Small sticker mark to the upper wrappers, light rubbing to the edges. Heavily faded at the spine. Pages lightly age-tanned.Description: First British Edition. [First Published: NATEEV, 1970] Illustrated with photographs, in colour & black and white. From the cover: “He was born under sentence of death, yet he lived a full span. He grew up amid the luxury of a royal court, yet he threw in his lot with slaves. Protected and pampered by an absolute monarch, he joined the monarch’s most persecuted victims. Trained in the strict tenets of a ritual conservatism, he became a revolutionary. Halting of speech, he uttered words of exalted wisdom. In a world of turmoil and corruption, he put forth an inspired code of ethics for humanity. Taken at birth from his people and his faith, he established their distinctive religion and moulded them into a nation.

This was Moses, the central figure in the struggle of the early Hebrews to escape from bondage and forge their own tradition. The story of his life and the epic chronicle of his people have been retold with rare drama, insight, and scholarship in this volume.

We see Moses as a child and youth, separated from his fellow Hebrews, and we follow his growing involvement with their affairs. Finally, his revelation in the desert sets in motion events leading to the famous freedom trek out of Egypt and to Moses’ emergence as a spiritual and political leader, achieving lofty aims against incredible odds, changing the course of history, and putting his stamp on an entire civilization.

What we know of Moses and of the great personalities of ancient Hebrew culture who followed him is presented in a highly readable manner that is faithful to the Biblical record and the latest archaeological and historical findings. Superb photographs in full colour and black-and-white, taken especially for this volume, illustrate the setting for this moving and remarkable saga.”

The House of Blue Mangoes by David Davidar (£9.50)Publisher: Weidenfeld & Nicolson — 2002Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1861591969]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Lightly rubbed at the corners of the wrappers.Description: From the cover: “This is a novel about two things: a family, and a village. The village, Chevathar, is set on the banks of India’s southernmost river, at the point where it flows into the Gulf of Mannar. It’s an idyllic setting, typical of villages on the Coromandel Coast. There are temples, a fort, a church (for, in this part of South India, many of the villagers are Christian), the big house where the Dorai family live, a beach, and groves of mango trees — the blue mangoes of the title.

The story begins in the last year of the nineteenth century with Solomon Dorai. As the headman of Chevathar, he is desperately trying to hold together the fraying ends of village life at a time of huge social and political unease. The spectre of caste unrest hangs about the South, threatening everything that Solomon holds dear — family, land, prosperity. When violence finally erupts, it takes Solomon, and the traditional structure of village life with it.

Three generations of Dorais come and go in the village by the sea, winning and losing the battle for Chevathar. There are Solomon’s sons, the dazzling athletic Aaron and the studious Daniel, both exiled by their father’s death but in different ways, both determined to make their mark on the world. And there is Daniel’s son, Kannan, cast out of the paradise that his father creates on the bones of the old Chevathar. Davidar has created an exuberant tale, set in a land of extremes, at a time of enormous historical change. The history of India ebbs and flows with the story of the Dorai family, their fortunes inevitably linked to it. The early struggles for independence, the emergence of Gandhi and the Congress Party, World War and finally the new India — the great events of the 20th century form the backdrop to the story of an extraordinary family.

This is David Davidar’s first novel. It’s vigorous and brilliantly coloured, teeming with a host of vibrant characters, and dominated by the sea and mountains and tree-bound landscape of the deep south of India.”

The Soviet Air Force Since 1918 by Alexander F. Boyd (£9.50)Publisher: MacDonald & Janes — 1977Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned and with a small graze, hole, to the dedication page. Description: Contains a glossary of terms. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Diagrams; Maps; Tables;

From the cover: “A comprehensive and detailed study of Soviet air power based on many years of research and a wide range of contemporary Russian documentary material. Covering the evolution of military aviation in the USSR from its emergence in the 1920s to the present day, this work sheds new light on the men who forged and commanded the Red Air Force in peace and war, the designers who created its aircraft, and the men who flew them. Of particular interest is new material, made available in English for the first time, revealing the havoc wrought by Stalin’s ‘terror purges’ in the Red Air Force and the Soviet aviation industry in the late 1930s, and their detrimental effect on subsequent operational performance.

During the epic struggle against the Luftwaffe the initially catastrophic losses were made good by a ruthless production drive, concentration on a few proven aircraft types and their progressive developments, and Allied help. Within less than three years this led to a complete reversal of the balance of air power on the Eastern Front and laid the foundations of the new Soviet Air Force. An even more remarkable achievement was the rapid assimilation of the impact caused by the jet and atomic age. During the past three decades Soviet military aviation has undergone constant modernisation and expansion, and the term ‘MiG fighter’ now has an international meaning.

In the 1970s the increasingly more efficient combination of modern tactical and strategic air forces gained a new dimension and became capable of backing up the global presence of the Soviet Navy.

This book is an important contribution to the better understanding of the nature, growth and effectiveness of Soviet air power.”

Restructuring the Employment Relationship by Duncan Gallie (£8.50)Publisher: Oxford: Clarendon Press — 1998Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0198294417]Condition: Very Good. Upper wrapper slighty curled. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: 2nd printing. Illustrated by way of: Graphs; Tables;

From the cover: “This masterly study presents the first large-scale empirical analysis of the changes in British work experiences and employment relationships between the 1980s and 1990s. Drawing on the Employment in Britain survey — a national survey providing the richest source of evidence to date about individuals’ experience of employment — it examines the impact of new technologies, the emergence of new management policies, the changing forms of employment contract, and the growth of job insecurity on people’s experience of employment. The authors focus on the implications these developments have for the ways in which skills and work tasks have been changing, the nature of control at work, the degree of participation in decision-making, and the flexibility demanded at work. They assess whether there has been a tendency towards either a polarization or convergence of employment experiences between men and women, and between occupational classes.

They offer fresh insight into how the changing quality of work in recent years has affected employee’s involvement in their jobs and organizations, the stress they experience at work, and the propensity for absenteeism and staff turnover. While the study provides strong evidence of a marked trend towards upskilling, the authors take issue with the argument that a new type of employment relationship is emerging, arguing instead that the restructuring of the employment relationship has, in fact, reinforced traditional lines of division in the workforce.”

Class Struggles in Tanzania by Issa G. [Gulamhussein] Shivji (£7.50)Publisher: London: Heinemann — 1978Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0435966006]Condition: Good. A pleasant enough reading copy. Wrappers mylar-sealed. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Contains: Tables;

From the cover: “This book brings together the major strands in Issa Shivji’s much discussed works. It traces in outline the history of class struggles in mainland Tanzania since independence. It uses the method of historical materialism to integrate recent radical and Marxist writings on underdevelopment.

Issa Shivji argues that economic struggles and the relationship of Tanzania to international capitalism have to be built into any historical analysis of the country’s social relations. The separation, often found in radical literature, between economic structures on the one hand and social relations on the other is, he argues, a false dichotomy. Inevitably it smuggles in bourgeois ideology under the guise of ‘Marxism’.

The first part of the book briefly discusses the Marxist theory of class and class struggle and its application to a third world situation. Part two discusses class formations at the time of independence. Parts three, four and five deal with class struggles since independence and the emergence of the contradictions between the conditions of the proletariat and the poor peasantry and those of the dependent ‘bureaucratic bourgeoisie’.

Issa Shivji explains the Tanzanian policy of ‘Ujamaa’ and such important documents as the ‘Arusha Declaration’ and the ‘TANU Guidelines’ (Mwongozo) in terms of class relations and class struggles. This is a fundamental break with the radical scholarship of the academic socialists who have hitherto obscured reality by making policy statements and the commitment of individuals the focus of their analysis.”

Blondel's Song: The Capture Imprisonment and Ransom of Richard the Lionheart by David Boyle (£7.00)Publisher: Penguin — 2006Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0141015977]Condition: Very Good. Description: First in this, paperback, edition. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs;

From the cover: “On his way back from the crusades, one of England’s most famous and romantic medieval kings was ship-wrecked and stranded near Venice. Trying to make his way home in disguise, he was arrested and imprisoned and effectively disappeared. He didn’t return home for another fifteen months, and at enormous cost a quarter of the entire wealth of England was paid to win his release.

The extraordinary events surrounding Richard the Lionheart’s disappearance provides the background to some of the most colourful and enduring legends Robin Hood, the Sheriff of Nottingham, the discovery of King Arthur’s grave, and above all, the story of Blondel, Richard’s faithful minstrel, and his journey across central Europe singing under castle towers until he finds the missing king.

Blondel’s Song tells the tale of one of the most peculiar incidents of medieval history, and the background to the real Blondel and his fellow troubadours, as well as the courts of love, the Holy Grail, emergence of gothic cathedrals like Notre Dame and Chartres, and the unique moment of tolerance in the West when Europe shared a language, and a new culture of music, romance and chivalry.”
