Television and Radio: Everybody's Soapbox by Bruce Parker; Nigel Farrell; (£14.50)Publisher: Blandford Press — 1983Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0713713062]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Top edges of the dust wrapper slightly ruffled. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Illustrated with cartoons. From the cover: “The chance to appear on a radio or television programme is the opportunity of a lifetime to speak to a mass audience. Yet how many people appreciate the value of such an offer, or really know how to make the most of it? With the expansion of broadcasting in the 1980s there will be more air time available to members of the public in scores of programmes, particularly those put out by regional and local television and radio stations. Nearly everyone has something to gain by a chance to appear on the air: the father searching for his teenage daughter, the secretary of the local drama group which is putting on an unusual play, the harassed mother seeking action about the damp walls of her council house, or the managing director who wants a little publicity for his firm’s award-winning product. Everybody’s Soapbox explains in an entertaining way not only how to use your time on the air effectively but how to go about obtaining it in the first place. The authors take a detailed and often humorous look into what happens behind the scenes of broadcasting. Some of the pitfalls are described, including the ones to avoid when being interviewed. Don Osmond’s cartoons complement the light-hearted but informative text. Much advice is provided, particularly for those who find themselves on the air for the first time. Radio and television techniques are revealed and the jargon is made clear. There is guidance on how to handle an interview and how best to present yourself. You can also find out the right way to deal with the film crew which may arrive at your house.”Notes: Illustrated by Don Osmond. Size: 8¾" x 5¾". The Energy That Heals by Jacques Staehle (£14.50)Publisher: Carnell — 1995Binding: Hardback First Edition. [ISBN: 1857797450]Condition: Very Good.Description: The Complete Acupressure Guide. First British Edition. From the introduction: “Acupressure can be considered as the art of living in perfect health thanks to the stimulation of energy points in the body. Indeed, it is quite possible to stimulate energy points in the body by massaging them with the fingertip: this is acupressure; if needles are used, it is called Acupuncture or, even better, using an electronic device, this is called Electro-Puncture. Although it is not a universal cure, acupressure has proved just as effective for thousands of other people who have recovered their joy in life, as a result of its preventive and curative qualities. This book deals with the role of energy and its circulation along the meridians.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". Blue boards with Gilt titling to the Spine & Upper Board. 220 pages. From Television to Home Computer: The Future of Consumer Electronics by Edited by Angus Robertson (£13.00)Publisher: Blandford Press — 1979Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0713709731]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Edges of dust wrapper slightly worn. Price Clipped. First blank has a tanned offset from the flap.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “In the 1950s, the only items of complex electronic equipment in the typical household would have been a monochrome television receiver and simple record player (usually called a gramophone!). Ten years later colour television was just beginning to replace monochrome, and hi-fi ‘separates’ were becoming all the rage. Today, the range of electronic equipment being introduced into the consumer environment is rapidly increasing, effectively opening up the vast new industry of ‘Consumer Electronics’. In addition to colour television, there are video cassette recorders which allow television programmes to be recorded for later viewing or permet pre-recorded cassettes (such as feature movies) to be watched; teletext and viewdata receivers (usually built into normal television sets) that provide access to vast data bases of consumer and business information such as news, weather, sport and entertainment guides; video discs that will permit feature movies to be purchased for less than £10 and viewed via a record player producing pictures as well as sound; television and electronic games that are allowing rapidly advancing electronic technology to provide entertainment on many levels, for adults and children; and home computers which are not dissimilar to the more complex television games but with the important difference that they may be programmed to play games and perform many thousands of different domestic tasks. Many other aspects of consumer electronics are covered in the book including electronic watches and calculators and, with so much electronic equipment installed in the home, home protection and security devices which are becoming increasingly important, not only as defences against theft, but also fire. Finally, developments are continuing all the time in hi-fi and these are thoroughly covered, together with the increasingly important field of in-car entertainment market. Consumer electronics are destined to have a tremendous impact on our lives over the coming years, and FROM TELEVISION TO HOME COMPUTERS provides an insight into that future.”Notes: Size: 8¾" x 5¾". Very slightly ruffled edges of DJ.Description: Chaos, Power and Accountability in the Information Age. From the cover: “As all of us are showered with bright promises about the new electronic frontier — one of unalloyed and revolutionary opportunities — this book offers a more sober, alternative perspective. It portrays a wired-world of economic growth without jobs or security; a realm of connections - without communication; a frontier without citizens - only consumers. In this controversial book David Brown contrasts the myths with the emerging realities of the information age. He shows how informational networking is eroding traditional centres of power — and presenting a convincing illusion of creative anarchy — white at the same time it is steadily and quietly giving rise to potentially dangerous new concentrations of commercial power which are built around hubs of silicon and code.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". Moreover he has done it in his idiosyncratic style and with the infectious humour which has endeared him to millions throughout the world, transcending his sport. Fiercely proud of his background as a Yorkshire miner’s son, his story follows his youth in Barnsley, his early days as a cricketer, through to his career as an umpire and his experiences of the international scene, all told with total honesty by this very private person. Throughout his life he has courted both controversy and comedy. This book is a mixture of forthright views on the game and those involved in it, compelling accounts of what it is like behind the scenes in cricket at the highest level, and hilarious stories, for which Dickie is so well known.”Notes: Foreword or introduction by Michael Parkinson. The Grub Street Dictionary of International Aircraft Nicknames, Variants and Colloquial Terms by John Horton (£11.50)Publisher: Grub Street — 1994Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0948817755]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dustwrapper.Description: From the flap: “John Horton has compiled a comprehensive A-Z of aircraft names which is as rich and fascinating as the history of aviation itself. His book, the first of its kind on the market, explores evocative names such as the Seven Day Bus, the Supermarine PB9 built in a week and the Aardvark, which refers to the General Dynamics F-III and its modus operandi, rather than its appearance as a great long nose grubbing the dirt. The subculture of informal and colloquial names has remained as vigorous and inventive throughout the century and Horton covers models from World War 1 to Vietnam. Such names not only tend to be humorous and anecdotal in nature, but also reveal the more interesting characteristics of the aircraft concerned.”Notes: Size: 8¾" x 6". The Silent Revolution: The Development of Conventional Weapons 1945-85 by Guy Hartcup (£11.50)Publisher: London: Brassey's — 1993Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 008036702X]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Diagrams;

From the cover: “The awful threat of nuclear war has tended to blind people to the great advances in conventional weapons technology that occurred in the latter half of the twentieth century. These were years of unprecedented investment in research and development, and despite the cost, of unparalleled scientific advancement. The Silent Revolution is the first book to chart the worldwide development of the whole spectrum of modern weapons systems since the closing years of the Second World War.

Guy Hartcup’s comprehensive study covers the many new weapon systems ranging from guided missiles to chemical weapons that have revolutionised air, land and sea warfare, and equally important, the scientific applications including electronics, communications and sensors, as well as the ability of the fighting man to handle new equipment. As a former official historian to the UK Air Ministry and the Treasury, he draws extensively upon official documents now released under the thirty year rule and upon the mass of unclassified material in the public domain covering more recent developments on both sides of the Atlantic. He has produced a unique study in which not only the weapons systems and their technology are examined but also the internecine strife between the services, each competing for a bigger share of the defence budget, and the impact of this and countless political cancellations on new projects.

The book ends on a timely warning against the dangers of succumbing to what the author calls ‘technophilia’, reminding us that, despite the widespread use of new technological wonders in the Gulf War, much of the weaponry used was based on technology going back tens of years.”

Fighter! A Pictorial History of International Fighter Aircraft by Bill Gunston (£10.50)Publisher: Parragon — 1998Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Illustrated with photographs, in colour & black and white.

From the cover: “FIGHTERS ARE the thoroughbreds of the aviation world — they are agile, fast, lethally armed killers designed to seek out and challenge enemy aircraft and to win superiority of the skies. These are machines that are created to be deadly.

The first fighters appeared in World War I. In those days they looked very different: they were often biplanes, or even triplanes, and their flimsy structures were crafted out of wood, steel tube, bracing wires and fabric. Armed with machine-guns, they took part in the first aerial combats in the skies high above the trenches of France.

By World War II the technology had changed. These new fighters were streamlined monoplanes usually made of aluminium alloy. Engines of 150 horsepower had given way to power plants of ten times that power, and machine-guns were replaced by heavy shell-firing cannon. This conflict gave rise to some of the greats of fighter history — Spitfire, Mustang, Bf 109, Zero…

At the end of the war the jet engine swept away previous limitations on speed, opening the way for the design of new, aerodynamic fighter aircraft capable of flying faster than sound, while the development of guided-missile technology armed the fighter with a new generation of weapons.

Today’s fighters are packed with incredible electronic systems, and can fire lethal missiles at hostile aircraft beyond the horizon 200km (125 miles) away. Top-secret ‘stealth’ technology is now being developed to make the fighters of tomorrow virtually undetectable to enemy radar. This vividly-illustrated book traces the history of the world’s greatest fighters from World War I to the present day and provides a colourful and informative tribute to these fantastic aircraft..”

From the cover: “This twelfth book by Richard J. Caruana is being presented after many years of study and a world-wide search for photographs of the period. In fact, illustrations form the backbone of this book. Until now, wartime photographs had to be accepted for what they were and these were generally of poor quality. Considering wartime censorship and scarcity of photographic films and processing materials, it is a miracle that photos of any quality at all have survived. Latest technology in electronic photo scanning and retouching has made it possible to bring most of these old pictures back to what they would have looked like when taken over fifty years ago. Over 400 photographs reproduced within the covers of this book have been individually enhanced and restored — a great labour of love which hopefully will be fully appreciated by all.”

Spycatcher: The Candid Autobiography of a Senior Intelligence Officer by Peter Wright (£10.50)Publisher: London: Viking — 1987Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0670820555]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper. Pages lightly age-tanned. Description: 6th printing. [First Published: 1987] Illustrated with black and white photographs.

From the cover: “Peter Wright was a key figure in British intelligence for nearly a quarter of a century This book, which the British government has gone to great lengths to keep from being published, is a memoir that recounts his extraordinary career in that wilderness of mirrors, the world of espionage. It is uncensored, remarkably candid, and enormously revealing about the real spy business that most of us know principally from fiction. Peter Wright initially joined Britain’s Secret Service, known as MI5, in 1955 in the capacity of the organization’s principal scientist, and devoted himself in the early years to the invention of various gadgets for use in the espionage trade. Along the way, he demonstrated a brilliant flair for the art of counter-intelligence. He went on to become, for nearly two decades, the central figure in Britain’s relentless and sometimes humiliating efforts to detect and expose Soviet espionage. From that vantage point, the reader is treated to a unique perspective on the likes of Philby, Maclean, Burgess, Blunt, and a host of other exposed spies and alleged defectors. The identity of the so-called Fifth Man Soviet spy has puzzled and fascinated many for decades. In Spycatcher, Peter Wright shares his conviction that the Fifth Man was none other than Sir Roger Hollis, long the head of MI5 itself! The story of how he and many of his MI5 colleagues came to this conclusion makes for some of the best reading found anywhere in the vast literature on espionage. As a result of a great many trips Peter Wright made to the United States in his capacity as Britain’s principal liaison with American intelligence officials, his book is replete with sharply etched and sometimes humorous anecdotes about such notables as J. Edgar Hoover, Richard Helms, Bill Sullivan, William Harvey, and, above all, James Jesus Angleton. Wright’s insights about the CIA and the FBI, their relationships with each other, with the rest of the U. S. government, and with America’s allies is riveting stuff. American interest ought to be especially aroused by Peter Wright’s charge that there was a conspiracy within MI5 to overthrow then Prime Minister Harold Wilson in the mid-1970s, and that it was instigated from within the CIA. Wright’s memoir is also of interest because it is a firsthand account of the bugging of embassies (of friend and foe alike), as well as other aspects of electronic eavesdropping, codebreaking, and “wet” affairs (assassinations). But the most important aspect of this book is that it offers a rare inside glimpse of the real day-by-day goings-on within the intelligence world over a long period of time from a very high-level, authoritative voice.”

The Emperor's Codes: Bletchley Park and the Breaking of Japan's Secret Ciphers by Michael Smith (£10.50)Publisher: London, New York, Toronto, Sydney & Auckland: Bantam Press — 2000Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0593046412]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and the top corners of the boards with commensurate wear to the dust wrapper. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black and White Photographs; Maps;

From the cover: “The extraordinary wartime exploits of the British codebreakers based at Bletchley Park continue to fascinate and amaze. In his bestselling Station X Michael Smith brought us the astonishing true story of the breaking of the Enigma Cipher. In The Emperor’s Codes he continues the story as he examines how Japan’s codes were broken, and the consequences for the Second World War.

The Emperor’s Codes moves across the world from Bletchley Park to Pearl Harbor; from Singapore to Colombo; and from Mombasa to Melbourne, describing not just how the Japanese codes and ciphers were broken but how the lives of the codebreakers, both professional and personal, were affected. It tells the stories of John Tiltman, the eccentric British soldier turned codebreaker who made many of the early breaks into Japanese diplomatic and military codes; Eric Nave, the Australian sailor recruited to work for the British who pioneered breakthroughs in Japanese naval codes; and of Oshima Hiroshi, the hard-drinking Japanese ambassador to Berlin, whose candid reports to Tokyo of his conversations with Hitler and other high-ranking Nazis were a major source of intelligence in the war against Germany. Many of these revelations have been made possible only through using recently declassified British files, through privileged access to Australian secret official histories, and interviews with an unprecedented number of British, American and Australian codebreakers.

Where previous books on the subject have emphasized the role played by the Americans, The Emperor’s Codes is the first full account of the critical role played by British and Australian codebreakers. Using the memories of those at the forefront of this battle, Michael Smith reveals a gripping and previously untold story from the Second World War.”

The OpenGL extensions guide by Eric Lengyel (£10.50)Publisher: Hingham: Charles River Media — 2003Binding: Hardback [ISBN: 9781584502944]Condition: Near Fine. Description: From the cover: “OpenGL is the premier environment for developing 2D and 3D graphics and game applications. The interface has been the choice of game programmers, mainly because of its cross-platform operability, but also because it is constantly evolving to keep pace with hardware advances in the form of extensions. Until now, the game industry was lacking one single, concise reference to help make sense of the dozens of extensions available.

The OpenGL Extensions Guide provides this much needed resource and concentrates specifically on the extensions most important to developing modern 3D games. The book is laid out in an intuitive fashion, discussing groups of extensions that modify or augment similar components of the base OpenGL architecture. In addition, the text focuses mainly on operational and implementation issues, discussing the underlying mathematics of an extension only when it is critical to understanding that extension’s functionality.”
