Galatea by Philip Pullman (£88.00)Publisher: Victor Gollancz — 1978Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0575024984]Condition: Good+ - in Good+ DJ. Edges of DJ somewhat ruffled, a little tanned, with a ½" closed tear to the bottom corner of the upper panel. Heavily bruised at the head, tail and corners of the boards. First few pages slightly dog-eared at the top corners.Description: The authors 2nd novel. From the cover: “‘Everything what it seems’ is the quotation that stands at the head of this novel; and Galatea both seems and is the story of a man who loves his wife, and who goes to look for her when she disappears. What Martin Browning cannot know, however, is that his search for the elusive Catherine will lead him first to Valencia and ultimately into the wilds of South America; that it will take him into the company of rich people and poor, zombies, businessmen, cyclists, dogs, electric whores, an astrologer doubling as a werewolf and a deranged midget who is also a magistrate, as well as unreal people of various kinds; or that at its end, in the remote snow-filled Anderson Valley, he will learn from the clean-smelling angelic messenger perhaps sent to him by his wife that it is no bad thing to be unreal.”Notes: Jacket designed by Linda Garland. Size: 8" x 5¼". Green boards with Gilt titling to the Spine. 287 pages. Design and Build Your Own Doll's Houses by Beryl Armstrong (£24.00)Publisher: Apple Press — 1995Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 1850766401]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Slight rubbing to the head of both the dust wrapper and the boards. Text complete, clean and tight. From the cover: “The world of doll’s houses is an exciting and magical one and when you build your own house you are limited only by your imagination. You can create in miniature whatever you want — a palatial mansion, an old farmhouse, a country cottage or a shop. Design and Build Your Own Doll’s Houses gives you all the information you need to achieve this. There is one simple principle upon which the construction of a whole house is based and that is building a box. It is clearly explained at the beginning of the book and once you have grasped this you can go on to create a house as simple or elaborate as you wish. Design and Build Your Own Doll’s Houses guides you through the whole building process — making the basic box structure, adding the internal walls, floors and ceilings and putting on the roof and front. It includes detailed information on how to build staircases, doors, windows, fireplaces and how to wire and decorate your house. Techniques for every conceivable feature are explained with the aid of step-by-step photographs, and as many alternative methods are given as possible so that you can adapt them to suit your own requirements. This book is full of inspiring and useful ideas and advice on how to avoid common pitfalls. There is a suggested work schedule to help you organise and order the construction, and at the end you will have your own unique house, awaiting only furniture and inhabitants.”Notes: Size: 9" x 11¾". BAC Lightning by Arthur Reed (£19.50)Publisher: Ian Allan — 1980Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0711009880]Condition: Very Good - in Very Good DJ. DJ slightly ruffled along edges.Description: The English Electric (now British Aerospace) Lightning will go down in the history of aviation as one of the most classic of fighters. It was the first and only truly supersonic aircraft to be fully developed by Britain on her own, and as such it was beloved by pilots, but not so enthusiastically received by politicians. Its story covers three decades (the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s) and parts of two more (the latter part of the 1940s and very likely the whole of the 1980s) so that it is at once both an historical aircraft and one that remains very contemporary. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the flap: “The Websters of Penns began their enterprise in the time of Marlborough and the business has proved as durable as the steel for which they were famous. Set in the background of the national history the story accelerates down the years — threaded with family problems, humour and drama often lie together, and in later years suspense is rarely absent. The tale is a true one without the cheap device of omitting the unpalatable and it depicts most of the range of human performance from inspiration and genius to utter imbecility. At the end one is left amazed that the firm still stands, but Webster and Horsfall, as it is now known, still remains — battered perhaps, but still on solid rock after two and a half centuries.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". To understand what happens there and the intricate world of finance of which it is the centre, one must know how it works in practice. Published originally in the United States, the book has been revised for this first British edition. Finance, like advertising, was imported to America from Britain before developing its own powerful and independent roots in the new soil. Neither Debbie Cuevas nor her boyfriend, Mark Brewster, gave much thought to the white pickup truck that had pulled up beside them on the river front. Until… A revolver thrust through the driver’s window… a hand jerked Debbie’s head back and a voice said ‘don’t do anything stupid’… and a quiet Friday evening abruptly became a nightmare. In the hours that followed, Debbie would experience atrocities too monstrous to conceive. Kidnapping, rape, torture, attempted murder… these words cannot convey the horrors that would continue to poison her life long after her captors had been brought to justice.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". Overcharge: How Electric Utilities Exploit and Mislead the Public, and What You Can Do About It by Lee Metcalf & Vic Reinemer (£11.50)Publisher: David McKay Company — 1967Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little wrinkled at the edges, somewhat marked and soiled at the panels with tanning to the spine. Boards lightly dust-stained. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Reprint. [First: Same Year] Illustrated / decorative end papers. From the cover: “The great blackouts in the Northeast and Southwest have dramatized how necessary electricity is to our modern life. Yet the industry is dominated by a few giant corporations called “I.O.U.s” (investor-owned utilities), that operate with the insolent grandeur of medieval princes.

It is widely believed that utilities, because of their privileged monopoly position and assured market, are not allowed to earn more than a 6% profit, and that government regulatory bodies see to this. But the return on the book value of common stock in many giant utilities exceeds 15%. Their net profit is more than 20% of their revenue — far more than is received by risk-taking free-enterprise businesses.

From 1956 through 1962, eight “I.O.U.s” each made more than $100 million in excess profits; one hundred and six utilities made a total of $3.4 billion in excess profits. For 500 kilowatt-hours of electricity, you pay $13.44 to Boston Edison, an “I.O.U.”, but only $5 to Seattle’s city-owned power system, which nevertheless pumps millions of dollars into the city treasury every year. Overcharges can cost many a family thousands of dollars during the breadwinner’s working life. This book names the companies that are exploiting the public and exposes the secrets of their financial operation. It reveals in documented detail the apparatus set up by utility companies, often paid for with the customers’ money, for the dissemination of propaganda through radio, press, advertising, and in our schools and legislatures. It also tells how electric consumers unknowingly finance extremist organizations, which receive regular contributions from the “I.O.U.s.”

The authors tell us how we can remedy these evils without injury to fair and profitable private ownership. They show us what is wrong with present government regulation and how to make it effective and helpful to both utilities and consumers; how competition can be strengthened, to the benefit of all — even in this mammoth, monopolistic industry.

Combining a broad background of legislative, judicial, and academic experience, the authors have presented the first definitive book to deal with the vast problems of electric power today, and the urgent need and opportunity for eliminating abuses.”

The Grub Street Dictionary of International Aircraft Nicknames, Variants and Colloquial Terms by John Horton (£11.50)Publisher: Grub Street — 1994Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. His book, the first of its kind on the market, explores evocative names such as the Seven Day Bus, the Supermarine PB9 built in a week and the Aardvark, which refers to the General Dynamics F-III and its modus operandi, rather than its appearance as a great long nose grubbing the dirt. The subculture of informal and colloquial names has remained as vigorous and inventive throughout the century and Horton covers models from World War 1 to Vietnam. Such names not only tend to be humorous and anecdotal in nature, but also reveal the more interesting characteristics of the aircraft concerned.”Notes: Size: 8¾" x 6". Australia in the 1960s by Leo St. Clare Grondona (£10.50)Publisher: Anthony Blond — 1962Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good — in Poor Dust Wrapper. Edges of the dust wrapper frayed with loss at the spine ends and corners, with a short closed tear to the foot of the lower panel. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding. From the cover: “Mr. St. Clare Grondona is a writer of an original and forthright turn of mind whose publications have been greeted by editorial applause from all the serious journals in the English-speaking world.

At the invitation of the Australian Institute of Management he has recently made a lengthy and intensive tour of Australia, where he was born. He has seen the chief cities, the industries, irrigation settlements, hydro electric and thermal stations, forest areas, mines as well as sheep and cattle stations in the far outback.

When the early settlers arrived in Australia that Island continent was a land of no promise. There lacked grain, edible seed, nuts, fruits, vegetables and fibres. There were no hooved animals, little water away from the permanent rivers and no evidence, at the outset, of mineral wealth.

In Australia in the 1960s the author analy ses in detail a very different picture of the diverse prosperity of Australia today.

By including his proposal for the establish ment of a North Australian Development Corporation, as well as a summary of his thesis on price stability for basic commod ities — which he outlined to senators and members of the House of Representatives in Canberra — the author provides a unique, if controversial, pointer to the direction in which further development of Australia may well take.

In fact Australia in the 1960s is the only comprehensive guide to the current economy of that country and the information and prognostication it contains will be invaluable to any interested parties from the investor to the immigrant.”

Aviation Record Breakers by Christopher Chant (£10.50)Publisher: Apple Press — 1988Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1850761213]Condition: Good+ — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Gently faded at the spine of the dust wrapper and onto the margins of the panels. Gently bruised at the spine ends and corners with commensurate ruffling to the dustwrapper with a small nick to the bottom corner of the upper panel. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Illustrated with colour photographs. From the cover: “Powered flight is now some 85 years old; during that period, the struggle for mastery of the air has constantly been in the forefront of human technological achievement. The early aircraft were little more than playthings in which, admittedly, some remarkable feats were performed: today’s aircraft, both civil and military, are extraordinarily reliable machines capable of carrying large loads, of flying at high speed, or of travelling enormous distances, and often a combination of all three. Yet there is still a close relationship between the original aircraft and today’s phenomenal machines.

The transformation has been gradual, but within it there stand out a number of crucial innovations: the reliable piston engine, metal stressed-skin construction, retractable landing gear, proper flight instrumentation, the enclosed cockpit, landing- and trailing-edge high-lift devices, pressurization, the turbocharger, the turbojet engine, the turbofan engine, better understanding of aerodynamics, and in recent years a host of avionic and structural developments that have made today’s aircraft safer than their predecessors as well as more economical to fly. Yet this is not a subject for arid technical treatment, but one in which people’s insights and intuitions have played as important a part as pure scientific or technological expertise. And even in today’s climate of computer-aided design and manufacture, there are still individuals who are pushing back the frontiers of aircraft design.

AVIATION RECORDBREAKERS is an introduction to those individuals and to their successes. With full technical data and a wealth of superb full-colour illustrations, the biggest, the smallest, the highest, the stealthiest, and of course the fastest, civil and military aircraft — and the technical breakthroughs they represent — are examined; an exciting and informative analysis of one of Man’s most remarkable endeavours.”

Fighter! A Pictorial History of International Fighter Aircraft by Bill Gunston (£10.50)Publisher: Parragon — 1998Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0752526081]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dustwrapper. Dustwrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges. Previous owner’s inscription to the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Illustrated with photographs, in colour & black and white.

From the cover: “FIGHTERS ARE the thoroughbreds of the aviation world — they are agile, fast, lethally armed killers designed to seek out and challenge enemy aircraft and to win superiority of the skies. These are machines that are created to be deadly.

The first fighters appeared in World War I. In those days they looked very different: they were often biplanes, or even triplanes, and their flimsy structures were crafted out of wood, steel tube, bracing wires and fabric. Armed with machine-guns, they took part in the first aerial combats in the skies high above the trenches of France.

By World War II the technology had changed. These new fighters were streamlined monoplanes usually made of aluminium alloy. Engines of 150 horsepower had given way to power plants of ten times that power, and machine-guns were replaced by heavy shell-firing cannon. This conflict gave rise to some of the greats of fighter history — Spitfire, Mustang, Bf 109, Zero…

At the end of the war the jet engine swept away previous limitations on speed, opening the way for the design of new, aerodynamic fighter aircraft capable of flying faster than sound, while the development of guided-missile technology armed the fighter with a new generation of weapons.

Today’s fighters are packed with incredible electronic systems, and can fire lethal missiles at hostile aircraft beyond the horizon 200km (125 miles) away. Top-secret ‘stealth’ technology is now being developed to make the fighters of tomorrow virtually undetectable to enemy radar. This vividly-illustrated book traces the history of the world’s greatest fighters from World War I to the present day and provides a colourful and informative tribute to these fantastic aircraft..”

The Model Railway Manual: A Step-by-step Guide to Building a Layout by C. J. [Cyril John] Freezer (£10.50)Publisher: Yeovil: Patrick Stephens Limited — 2002Binding: Hardback [ISBN: 1852605014]Condition: Very Good. Description: Contains: Black & white photographs; Black & white drawings; Diagrams; Appendices [2];

From the cover: “This book shows how to build a complete model railway from scratch, starting with the design and construction of a baseboard. It then covers how to plan and construct the layout, including the laying of track, adding the scenery and buildings, as well as the installation of the electrical wiring. The process is taken right through to adding the finishing touches to enhance the realism of the scene being modelled. Today, a comprehensive range of locomotives, coaches and wagons are available that can be used straight from the box, enabling the modeller to concentrate on producing an individualistic operating layout on which they can be run.

This comprehensive step-by-step guide takes the reader through all the necessary stages, pointing out potential pitfalls on the way. Whether you wish to depict the current railway scene with diesel and electric traction, or recreate the great days of steam in miniature, the stage-by-stage illustrations will guide you through the exercise.”

[First Edition: 1982] Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Tables;

From the cover: “The LNER was in many ways the most original, inventive and spectacular of the four main line companies that existed from 1923 until 1948. Although always beset by financial problems, it pioneered High Speed Trains forty years before British Rail’s HST; and it inspired intense loyalty among its officers, an unusually high number of whom filled senior management posts in BR after nationalisation.

This lavishly illustrated account, which complements rather than duplicates the earlier history by Cecil J. Alien, covers the first decade of the LNER. During this time the foundations were well laid down and the constituent companies skilfully welded together under the outstanding leadership of William Whitelaw and R. L. Wedgwood, though there was no ruthless trampling down of pre-grouping practices in the name of standardisation.

This is the first volume in Michael Bonavia’s important new three-volume work, which will appeal not only to rail buffs but also to serious students of our transport history.”

BR Standard Steam Album by Alan Williams (£9.50)Publisher: Ian Allan — 1980Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0711010102]Condition: Good+ — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the spine ends and corners with resultant slight wear to the dust wrapper which has a nick at the head of the spine. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “The ‘standard’ range of BR locomotives was born in 1951 as a result of the locomotive exchange trials of 1948. Designed to have a high route availability and to give an all-line standard, the first was produced by R. A. Riddles and his team and was intended to last well into the 1970s. In January 1951 No 70000 Britannia the first of 999 Standard locomotives — emerged into a world of change. Within 10 years British Railways’ final steam engine, Class 9F No 92220 Evening Star, was completed at Swindon and commenced a mere five years of service.

Developed mostly from the ex-LMS designs of Stanier, Fairburn and Ivatt, the Standards met their job specification perfectly — they were able to continue unremarkable everyday working without recourse to expensive maintenance. Within 17 years these workhorses of the final years of British steam were gone, superseded by their electric and diesel counterparts.

However, the engines were not lost forever — eight of the 1 2 classes enjoy an ‘afterlife’ on preserved railways. For those that did not survive, Alan Williams’ album will supply a suitable memorial.”

Planning and Designing Lighting by Edward Effron (£9.50)Publisher: Guild — 1987Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the edges, slightly dull in places. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Illustrated with colour photographs and diagrams. From the cover: “Good lighting can transform the appearance and the mood of your house at comparatively little cost.

Planning and Designing Lighting is an innovative and comprehensive guide. It not only directs you to the wide range of fittings and lamps now available, but, more importantly, illustrates how to make light work for you. Edward Effron, a leading lighting designer, shows you how you can achieve a wide range of different lighting effects, both atmospheric and practical. He takes a complex subject and explains it in simple terms for the layman.

The first section of the book explains what light is, and helps you discover exactly what effects you can achieve with your lighting scheme. The next section, illustrated with exciting full-colour photographs, takes you through the house, room by room. It covers specific functions, such as task, accent, outdoor and security lighting, and the lighting of art and plants, offers solutions to lighting problems, and demonstrates how particular lighting combinations can work.

Finally, a special section on lamps and fittings provides detailed information on up-to-date equipment.

As much a lighting design tool as a practical source book, Planning and Designing Lighting is a must for every household.”
