Old Friends, New Enemies: The Royal Navy and the Imperial Japanese Navy: Volume 2: The Pacific War 1942-1945 by Arthur J. Marder, Mark Jacobsen & John Horsfield (£84.00)Publisher: Oxford: Clarendon Press — 1992Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0198201508]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper with a nick to the head of the upper panel and faded at the spine. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Appendix; Black & White Photographs; Maps; Tables; Portrait to the frontispiece;

From the cover: “This first scholarly account of the Royal Navy in the Pacific War is a companion volume to Arthur Marder’s Old Friends, New Enemies: Strategic Illusions, 1936-1941. Picking up the story at the nadir of British naval fortunes — everywhere weak and naked , in Churchill’s phrase — it examines the Royal Navy’s role in events from 1942 to the Japanese surrender in August 1945.

Drawing on both British and Japanese sources and personal accounts by participants, the authors vividly retell the story of the collapse of Allied defences in the Dutch East Indies, culminating in the Battle of the Java Sea. They recount the attempts of the ‘fighting admiral’, Sir James Somerville, to train his motley fleet of cast-offs into an efficient fighting force in spite of the reluctance of Churchill, who resisted the formation of a full-scale British Pacific Fleet until the 1945 assault on the Ryukyu Islands immediately south of Japan.

Meticulously researched and fully referenced, this unique and absorbing account provides a controversial analysis of the key personalities who shaped events in these momentous years, and makes fascinating reading for anyone interested in the Pacific War.

Equinox: Ekranoplan by Aldo Palumbo (£42.00)Publisher: Channel Four — 1998Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 1851442243]Condition: Very Good. Gently rubbed at the edges of the spine and wrappers. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Diagrams;

From the cover: “Ekranoplans — craft designed to exploit the special aerodynamics of low-altitude flight — unite many of the advantages of ships and aircraft. They can travel at high speed but are much cheaper than aircraft to build and run. What’s more, the bigger they are, the more efficient they become, so they can carry huge cargoes or large numbers of passengers.

Seeing the military potential of such a craft, Nikita Khrushchev backed a programme to develop a massive ekranoplan during the Cold War. The result weighed 540 tonnes and was capable of speeds exceeding 400 kph.

Various research and development programmes have since been pursued independently, and now, with congested airports and overstretched air-traffic control systems in many parts of the world, it seems the ekranoplan’s time may have come.

This booklet gives the history of the ekranoplan, explains its aerodynamics, looks at current projects and analyses the combination of circumstances that could make these vessels a common sight in our harbours and waterways. It also provides details of sources of further information.”

A Census User's Handbook by Edited by David Rhind (£19.50)Publisher: London & New York: Methuen — 1983Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0419305105]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper. Previous owners' name to the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Contains: Charts; Graphs; Maps; Tables;

From the cover: “Census results provide the cornerstone of many activities in and outside contemporary government, in marketing studies and in research. For most of the users of statistics produced from censuses, detailed local information is essential. Yet there are very real problems associated with using statistics for local areas, and of comparing them with the results of previous censuses.

This book describes the data available from the 1981 and earlier Censuses of Population in Britain, and is designed as a key reference to what is in the Census and what can be obtained from it. The contributors, who combine here their considerable practical and academic experience, describe the contents of available census data, outline the use that has been made of them in the past by governments and academics, and define the problems in making historical comparisons using data from different censuses. Good practice in analysing census data and in linking census and other data together is greatly aided by access to suitable computer programs. This important aspect of the work of the census user is given considerable attention by the authors, who describe statistical analysis, the classification of areas and mapping of results using programs that are both efficient and readily available.

This handbook offers practical guidance in the use of the single most important data set available to planners, social scientists, market researchers and government officials. The general guidelines apply also to the use of other secondary data sources, such as employment and unemployment data. A Census User’s Handbook is an important requirement for professional and academic libraries.”

Boy Soldiers of the Great War: Their Own Stories for the First Time by Richard van Emden (£19.50)Publisher: Headline — 2005Binding: Hardback [ISBN: 075531302X]Condition: Near Fine — in Near Fine Dustwrapper.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “At the outbreak of the First World War, boys as young as thirteen were caught up in an overwhelming tide of patriotism and, in huge numbers, cheerfully joined up for active service. Between 1914 and 1918, the press, recruiting officers and the Government all contributed to the enlistment of thousands of under-age soldiers, in Britain and the Empire, despite an increasing pressure inside and outside Parliament to keep them at home. Many were to serve in the bloodiest battles of the war, such as ex-miner Dick Trafford, who took part in the Battle of Loos, and Frank Lindley, who, seeking to avenge his dead brother, went over the top on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Both were just sixteen. Some boys were unable to stand the strain of trench life and, often through the intervention of their parents, were finally sent home, while others, such as fifteen-year-old Jack Pouchot, won medals for gallantry or became highly efficient officers, such as Acting Captain Philip Lister and Second Lieutenant Reginald Battersby, both of whom were commissioned at fifteen and, a year later, fought in France.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". The Efficiency Experts: An Impartial Survey of Management Consultancy by Laura Tatham (£18.00)Publisher: Business Publications — 1964Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the edges, slightly tanned. A nice copy of a not-so-common title.Description: From the cover: “Are management consultants the answer to a businessman’s prayer? Or are they unprincipled rogues who, for an exorbitant fee, tell a company nothing it does not already know and saddle it with a lot of elaborate, unnecessary and expensive procedures?

To answer these extreme questions and many more between, Laura Tatham has obtained first-hand evidence from dozens of consultants and from as many clients, both satisfied and dissatisfied. This book is the result of her inquiries.

An impartial survey, The Efficiency Experts examines in detail what management consultants are, how they work and what they set out to accomplish. It suggests ways in which the businessman can make best use of consultants, and how he can assess whether or not a firm is likely to do a good job. A number of case histories describe both successful and unsuccessful consulting assignments.”

Our Undeveloped World by L. [Laurence] Dudley Stamp (£11.50)Publisher: Faber & Faber — 1953Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little faded. Edges of the text block lightly tanned, 2" closed tear to the foot of the lower panel at the join with the spine. Tanning also to the blanks and pastedowns. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: From the cover: “At a time when the English-speaking world is becoming increasingly aware of its responsibilities in world leadership, this important and stimulating book on the under-developed lands reaches some surprising but significant conclusions. It is based on a series of six lectures delivered by Dr. Stamp to an American audience as Pattern Foundation Visiting Professor at Indiana University. He shows conclusively that the most important under-developed lands are not in the tropics and uninhabited latitudes as we might expect; the hope for land development lies in the middle latitudes, in the United States, the Soviet Union, Canada, Australia, and the Argentine — countries already powerful and populated. Again, Dr. Stamp shows in startling fashion that while the population of such densely inhabited countries as India and China is increasing, the rate of increase in the English-speaking white race is Jour times as rapid as in the population of the world as a whole.

To meet the worldwide menace of hunger, Dr. Stamp advocates the removal of man-made barriers and more efficient utilization of our present lands. Above all, he urges such a world-wide survey of land resources as will lead to intensive cultivation of our rich lands and an understanding of native agricultural problems so different from our own.”

Leans very slightly.Description: 4th Impression. Illustrated with B&W photographs. Here is a fascinating natural, and unnatural, history of the owl, of which there are over 130 species around the world. The curious anatomy of these highly efficient predators is explained, and the ways in which they have adapted to widely differing habitats - anything from a hole in a giant cactus shared with woodpeckers to an under-ground burrow in a prairie-dog community - are fully examined. Roosting, courtship, the rough and tumble of daily life, diet and evolution are among the many other important aspects of behaviour discussed. Also of interest is the relationship between owls and man, for the owl has for centuries been seen as a harbinger of disaster.Notes: Size: 8½" x 6". 206 pages. Tags: owls birds predators raptors

EVER SINCE a German parachutist landed in Scotland on the night of May 10th, 1941, claiming to be Hitler’s deputy, Rudolf Hess, in search of peace with England, the man and his case have remained disturbingly enigmatic. It is true that the man who arrived bore a striking physical resemblance to the Deputy Führer; yet his confused and pathetic character seemed strangely unlike that of the formidably efficient officer who until the day before had been at Hitler’s right hand, directing the affairs of the Third Reich. Europe in the Seventeenth Century by David Maland (£9.50)Publisher: Macmillan — 1968Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Good - in Good DJ. Edges of DJ somewhat ruffled, creased at the head of the upper panel with a little fraying at the head, tail and corners. Gently bruised at head & tail of spine and corners. Text bright and tight.Description: Later printing [1966]. Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “IN RECENT YEARS Seventeenth-Century European history has attracted many scholars and much controversy. It has been particularly hard for the student to keep abreast of the latest research, so this clearly written and thoroughly comprehensive text book will meet a real need for advanced and university students.

The emphasis is not exclusively on commonplace political history; the author explains difficulties, clarifies the meaning of events and continually shows their interre lation in a fresh and efficient way. Thought, literature, art, architecture, science and eco nomics are all given their vital place, especi ally in the long opening chapter, which outlines the main influences running below the surface of a tumultuous century.

The book covers the period from the Peace of Augsburg to the death of Louis XIV. The chapter on the Thirty Years War provides a steady guide through the often bewildering detail of religio-political controversy and the extreme intricacy of international relations, dynastic and personal ambitions. Treatment of the Baltic countries i« thorough and, by going into more detail than is usual, the stories of Poland, Brandenburg, Sweden and smaller states become intelligible and less of an unwar ranted appendage.

Clear maps and the extensive use of footnotes for cross-reference keep the text as short and tight as possible. It is easy to study sectionally; a comprehensive bibliogra phy with critical commentary, and a full index are intended to make reference as simple and speedy as possible.”

Managing the Message by Peter Hobday (£9.50)Publisher: London: London House — 2000Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1902809181]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the spine ends and corners with commensurate wear to the dust wrapper. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Description: From the cover: “Question: when is a textbook, not a text book? Answer: when the writer does not ‘lecture’ on the range of experiences and observations in a style which is tutorial and dull, but is entertaining and discursive.

Peter Hobday is one of Britain’s best known broadcasters who has spent much of his career experiencing people ‘managing the message’. Across his studio table he has interviewed world political leaders, union bosses, the PR chiefs of top international companies and the representatives of pressure groups, each seeking to influence how their case is put across by the media. He has seen supremely efficient message managers and abject failures.

We can all recall politicians squirming under the pressure from the media interviewer, desperately trying to stay ‘on the message,’ arguing the case he wants to make rather than being led the way of the questioner. We can recall the PR disasters which have befallen manufacturers whose spokesman has got the ‘message’ wrong, perhaps only by the poor use of words. And the campaigner, who stridently calls for us to listen to his viewpoint, can either cause us to cheer or sneer, depending on how well he puts his message across.

This is a book from the cutting edge of the media that will enthral anyone with connections with that industry. It will, however, also instruct and entertain the most ambitious of young managers with PR responsibilities or the company boss who wants to know how to use good news and be ready to protect himself from the effects of the bad. It will even assist the village group seeking to promote (or stop) the building of a by-pass! For any observer of the modern world it will provide a salutary lesson on its power of the media whilst confirming that it can be influenced by those with a well-defined strategy and efficient message.”

From the cover: “A comprehensive and detailed study of Soviet air power based on many years of research and a wide range of contemporary Russian documentary material. Covering the evolution of military aviation in the USSR from its emergence in the 1920s to the present day, this work sheds new light on the men who forged and commanded the Red Air Force in peace and war, the designers who created its aircraft, and the men who flew them. Of particular interest is new material, made available in English for the first time, revealing the havoc wrought by Stalin’s ‘terror purges’ in the Red Air Force and the Soviet aviation industry in the late 1930s, and their detrimental effect on subsequent operational performance.

During the epic struggle against the Luftwaffe the initially catastrophic losses were made good by a ruthless production drive, concentration on a few proven aircraft types and their progressive developments, and Allied help. Within less than three years this led to a complete reversal of the balance of air power on the Eastern Front and laid the foundations of the new Soviet Air Force. An even more remarkable achievement was the rapid assimilation of the impact caused by the jet and atomic age. During the past three decades Soviet military aviation has undergone constant modernisation and expansion, and the term ‘MiG fighter’ now has an international meaning.

In the 1970s the increasingly more efficient combination of modern tactical and strategic air forces gained a new dimension and became capable of backing up the global presence of the Soviet Navy.

This book is an important contribution to the better understanding of the nature, growth and effectiveness of Soviet air power.”
