China At War by Freda Utley (£249.00)Publisher: London: Faber & Faber — 1939Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with a little loss, heavy damp-marking to the reverse showing slightly at the panels. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Endpapers and blanks a little grubby. Previous owners' gift inscription to the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned. Map to the rear slightly mis-folded. Description: Illustrated by way of: Frontispiece; Black & White Photographs; Fold-Out Maps [1];

From the cover: “Freda Utley, who has just returned from the seat of war in the Far East, gives us in this book a vivid description of the Chinese war, as she has seen it from the Chinese side, backed by a brilliant expose of the Chinese political situation. One of the very few British newspaper correspondents in the war zone (she represented the News Chronicle), the only Englishwoman to visit the Yangtze fronts, and a world-renowned authority on Far Eastern matters, Miss Utley is quite exceptionally well informed, as readers of her last book, Japan’s Feet of Clay, know. A trained and accurate observer, she allows her sympathy with the Chinese cause to warm but not to warp the truth. A naturally straightforward writer, she makes her story easy to read, deeply interesting, and therefore deeply moving.”

From the cover: “This work gives students and all those interested in the pre-colonial history of the East African coast translations of the principal documents on which our present knowledge is based. The object is to enable them to form their own ideas, even if they are not equipped with Greek, Latin, Arabic, Portuguese, French, Italian and Swahili. It contains most of the documents referred to by Dr. A. G. Mathew and Dr. G. S. P. Freeman-Grenville in their chapters in Vol. I of the History of East Africa, (Oxford 1962). Nothing earlier than 1500 has been excluded, and, because they reflect valuable local ideas of the history of earlier times, some late nineteenth century Swahili documents have also been included.”

Jet: The Story Of A Pioneer by Sir Frank Whittle (£88.00)Publisher: Frederick Muller — 1953Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good — in Poor Dust Wrapper. Edges of the dust wrapper somewhat frayed, rubbed at the leading edge of the flaps and loss to the tail of the spine. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding. Edges of the textblock heavily spotted. One leaf of the contents section is mis-trimmed at the top corner and stands proud of the block. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned. A decent copy, uncommon in the first edition. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs;

From the cover: “At the Royal Air Force Station at Cranwell in Lincolnshire on the evening of the I5th May, 1941, an aeroplane of unusual type was seen to taxi to the eastern end of the runway and then, after a run of 600 yards, to rise gracefully into the air for a flight of seventeen minutes. To the distant observers one very strange thing about this beautiful little aeroplane was that it had a very short undercarriage, but an even stranger thing was that it had no propeller. The aeroplane was the Gloster/Whittle E. 28/39 — the world’s first successful jet aeroplane — making its first flight.

This book is primarily the story behind that historic event. Frank Whittle, who eleven years earlier, at the age of 22, had applied for his patent for a turbo-jet engine, here sets on record with characteristic modesty his own courageous pioneer work and that of the small company, Power Jets Ltd. , which he helped to form in March 1936 to develop the engine. The dreams of his boyhood and the plans of his youth were brought to fruition in an invention that not only revolutionised military aircraft but set Britain ahead of the world in Civil Aviation, bringing the inventor a knighthood and an award of £100,000 at the age of only forty-one.

In non-technical language the author describes, for the first time, his hard and often bitter struggle with engineering problems, with financial difficulties and with the frustrations arising out of official policy. He also reveals the epic story of Power Jets’ successful battle against severe engineering difficulties, in spite of serious handicaps and of its losing battle against a combination of powerful forces in Government and Industry.”

Knights of the Black Cross: Hitler's Panzerwaffe and Its Leaders by Bryan Perrett (£58.50)Publisher: Robert Hale — 1986Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0709028067]Condition: Very Good — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Gently faded at the spine of the dust wrapper. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps;

From the cover: “The German Armoured Corps — the Panzerwaffe — was instrumental in the mighty conquests of the Nazis between 1939 and 1942 and in the remaining years of the war it provided the very backbone of Germany’s defence. Although its strength never exceeded one-fifth of the German Army, the commitment of the Panzerwaffe’s officers to the traditional Annihilation Concept made an enormous impact on the Second World War, particularly on the Eastern Front. The titanic struggles which took place there, after the early victories in Poland, the West and the Balkans, demonstrated the German tank soldiers’ superior tactical abilities and provided the basis of Soviet war theories to this day.

Bryan Perrett’s meticulously researched and incisive account tells the story of this remarkable band of soldiers, the evolution of their tactics and the development of their superlative fighting vehicles. An authoritative study which will fascinate the military expert and general reader alike.”

History of Jewish Philosophy by Edited by Daniel H. Frank & Oliver Leaman (£54.00)Publisher: London & New York: Routledge — 1997Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0415080649]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: Volume 2 in the series.

From the cover: “Jewish philosophy is often presented as an addendum to Jewish religion rather than as a rich and varied tradition in its own right, but the History of Jewish Philosophy explores the entire scope and variety of Jewish philosophy from philosophical interpretations of the Bible right up to contemporary Jewish feminist and postmodernist thought. The links between Jewish philosophy and its wider cultural context are stressed, building up a comprehensive and historically sensitive view of Jewish philosophy and its place in the development of philosophy as a whole.”

Soviet Risk-taking and Crisis Behavior: A Theoretical and Empirical Analysis by Hannes Adomeit (£34.00)Publisher: London, Boston & Sydney: George Allen & Unwin — 1982Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0043350437]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper nicked at the top corner of the upper panel otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: From the cover: “Under what conditions is the Soviet leadership prepared to take risks in the conduct of its international affairs? Does Soviet behaviour in crises conform to the commonly accepted ‘rules’ or ‘conventions’ of crisis management? How important are threats, ultimatums and military pressure for the achievement of Soviet objectives? These are questions which have often been asked in the West by political leaders and academic specialists, but they have never been systematically analyzed. In this book Hannes Adomeit provides such an analysis.

Detailed examination of the two Berlin crises forms the empirical background against which comparisons are made with the role of the Soviets in other crises-in Cuba, the Middle East, in Vietnam and in Afghanistan -as well as with patterns of Soviet intervention in Eastern Europe. Dr Adomeit shows that successive Soviet leaderships, whether headed by Stalin, Khrushchev or Brezhnev, have acted as though guided by a set of firm ‘operational principles’. These principles and patterns of Soviet crisis behaviour are explained by the interplay of four factors: an ideology requiring constant political initiative; a wide interpretation of security interests; diverse and growing military power; and the centralizing features of the Soviet system. Together they add up to certain advantages over Western pluralist systems; in particular, they can result in successful strategic deception and surprise.

Soviet Risk-taking and Crisis Behaviour will help the general reader to understand the nature of the Soviet challenge in the years ahead and the practitioner of politics to chart the difficult but necessary course between dangerous complacency and equally dangerous over-reaction to Soviet initiatives. Above all, it will be indispensable for students and specialists in international and comparative politics, since it relates theoretical notions of risk and crisis to actual Soviet foreign policy-combining strategic analysis with bureaucratic models of decision-making.”

Hong Kong's History: State and Society Under Colonial Rule by Edited by Tak-Wing Ngo (£32.00)Publisher: London & New York: Routledge — 1999Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0415208688]Condition: Very Good. Description: First in this, paperback, edition. Illustrated by way of: Tables;

From the cover: “Hong Kong’s rise from obscure fishing port to world city is usually put down to good colonial rule by Britain. This book challenges such a view and shows how the city’s success was shaped by the ruling elite and other native Hong Kongers.

Rewriting Hong Kong’s history from the bottom up, the chapters investigate vital, but hitherto obscured, aspects of the colony’s rise. They cover the Chinese collaboration with the colonial regime, legal discrimination and intimidation, rural politics, social movements, government-business relations, industrial policy, flexible manufacturing and colonial historiography.

Drawing together contributions from historians, sociologists and political scientists, the book highlights the role played by a variety of social actors in Hong Kong’s history and differs both from recent celebrations of British colonialism and anti-colonial Chinese nationalism.”

All the Kaiser's Men: The Life and Death of the German Army on the Western Front by Ian Passingham (£26.00)Publisher: Stroud: Sutton Publishing — 2003Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0750928816]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper.Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps;

From the cover: “Convinced that both God and the Kaiser were on their side, the officers and men of the German Army went to war in 1914, confident that they were destined for a swift and crushing victory in the West. The vaunted Schlieffen Plan on which the anticipated German victory was based expected triumph in the West to be followed by an equally decisive success on the Eastern Front. It was not to be. From the winter of 1914 until the early months of 1918, the struggle on the Western Front was characterised by trench warfare. But our perception of the conflict takes little or no account of the realities of life ‘across the wire’ in the German front line.

Comprehensively illustrated with original photographs, maps and archival material, All The Kaiser’s Men sets the record straight. It examines the German Army’s strategy and tactics throughout the war, from the commanding generals to the ordinary soldiers at the front, and looks in depth at the implications of the Allied naval blockade and the increasing problems of food and fuel shortages in Germany.

This important new book fills a significant gap in First World War historiography and will help both the casual reader and serious student gain a wider perspective of the war on the Western Front. “

The world entered the 80s much as it had been for the previous twenty, if not thirty, years. The developed world was riven in two between opposing camps, the Communist East and the Democratic West. The West lived through great change in the 1980s. Both the United States and Britain saw unparalleled political continuity with Mrs Thatcher leading three consecutive governments in Britain and President Reagan handing over to his Vice-President George Bush after two terms of office. Throughout Eastern Europe the Stalinist states had fallen one by one as the 1980s rushed to an end. Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia and East Germany all threw off their Communist regimes in peaceful revolutions.”Notes: Size: 14¾" x 11". 192 pages. Empires of the Indus: The Story of a River by Alice Albinia (£24.00)Publisher: London: John Murray — 2008Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 9780719560033]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Publishers review letter laid in. Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs; Maps [1];

From the cover: “One of the largest rivers in the world, the Indus rises in the Tibetan mountains, flows west across northern India and south through Pakistan. For millennia it has been worshipped as a god; for centuries used as a tool of imperial expansion; today it is the cement of Pakistan’s fractious union.

Five thousand years ago, a string of sophisticated cities grew and traded on its banks. In the ruins of these elaborate metropolises, Sanskrit-speaking nomads explored the river, extolling its virtues in Indias most ancient text, the Rig-Veda. During the past two thousand years a series of invaders — Alexander the Great, Afghan Sultans, the British Raj — made conquering the Indus valley their quixotic mission. For the people of the river, meanwhile, the Indus valley became a nodal point on the Silk Road, a centre of Sufi pilgrimage and the birthplace of Sikhism.

Empires of the Indus follows the river upstream and back in time, taking the reader on a voyage through two thousand miles of geography and more than five millennia of history redolent with contemporary importance.”

Far Eastern File: Intelligence War in the Far East, 1930-45 by Peter Elphick (£24.00)Publisher: London: Hodder & Stoughton — 1997Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0340665831]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps; Maps to the endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “During the 1930s the Far East was a fertile hunting ground for the espionage and counterespionage agents of many nations, especially for those of Great Britain, the United States and Japan, as well as of Germany, Italy and the USSR. Sometimes they worked in remote places on the border of Manchuria and Russia, or in the jungles of Malaya and Thailand; while others operated in Tokyo, Singapore, Manila and Hong Kong, not to mention that international melting pot and powder keg, Shanghai.

Throughout, the author emphasises the Japanese subversion and fifth-column activity; but in the background of operations were the spies of the communication airwaves, the so-called Signals Intelligence (or Sigint) operators who plucked diplomatic, consular, military and naval coded messages out of the ether and passed them to the cryptanalysts. At the centre of the British Sigint and intelligence co-ordination operations was the Far East Combined Bureau, a highly secret organisation, established in Hong Kong in 1935, which is here researched for the first time through recently released material from the Public Record Office and unpublished accounts of surviving officers. These reveal its impact and that of its successors on the eventual outcome of the Pacific war.

Using the latest published information, Peter Elphick illuminates fascinating new facets of many important issues including Britain’s appeasement policy towards Japan, the Melville Cox affair, the S. S. Automedon incident and the conspiracy theories which claim Churchill and Roosevelt had prior knowledge of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Peter Elphick’s unrivalled knowledge of the period and locale combined with his research into official intelligence material only released in the 1980s make Far Eastern File a book of unique importance and lasting interest.”

The Philosophy of Civilization (2 Volumes) by Rutherford Hamilton Towner (£24.00)Publisher: G. P. Putnam's Sons — 1923Binding: Hardback First Edition. Condition: Good. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned in both.Description: From the cover: “The impermanency of the great civilizations of the past is clearly recorded by history, and different causes have been assigned for the various rises and falls. Mr. Towner finds, however, certain main factors which are present in every case, and which, by their gradual appearance in the present, foreshadow the certain downfall of our own civilization. That the theories here presented will meet with much opposition is inevitable. Many of the movements which have been acclaimed as great steps forward, — the emancipation of woman, the prohibition of alcohol, as instances, — are shown to be vitally wrong. In support of his contentions, which are presented in a clear, forceful, and scholarly manner, he has marshalled an array of historical evidence that his opponents will find most formidable. This he asks us to study, that we may see in what a wrong direction we are headed, and by eliminating these dangerous factors render our civilization more stable and enduring.”Notes: Size: 8¾" x 5¾". Citadel: The Battle of Kursk by Robin Cross (£23.00)Publisher: Michael O'Mara — 1994Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 1854797204]Condition: Very Good. Light reading creases to the spine with rubbing to the tail. Text complete, clean and tight. A good copy. Description: First in this, paperback, edition. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps;

From the cover: “Citadel is the greatest armoured clash in the history of the world and the decisive battle of World War II — the last great German offensive on the Eastern front. Its aim was to claw back the initiative after the surrender of the Sixth Army at Stalingrad in January 1943. Vast armies were engaged, and the titanic air battles included the most costly single day of aerial warfare of all time. This was the battle of Kursk which Hitler confessed made his ‘stomach turn over’.

In Citadel, author Robin Cross provides a detailed picture of the Battle of Kursk, from the strategic tug-of-war waged within both high commands to the first-hand experiences of the troops on the ground and those in the air. The battle is placed firmly within the wider strategic context of the spring and summer of 1943, a time when Hitler and Stalin were taking decisions which would decide the course of the war and the peace which followed.”

The Vision of God by Vladimir Lossky (£21.00)Publisher: London: The Faith Press — 1963Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded. The pages are somewhat tanned, if tight, and a little musty. Description: Number 2 in the series.

From the cover: “This second volume in the Library of Orthodox Theology and Spirituality is written by Vladimir Lossky who, in the years between his departure from Russia in 1923 and his death in 1958, established himself as one of the most brilliant of that band of Orthodox scholars dedicated to presenting the life and thought of The Eastern Church to the West. The Vision of God can rank with his classic Mystical Theology of the Eastern Church. In it Lossky studies the meaning of the vision of God and its impact on the life and thought of the Church from the rise of Christianity to the time of Gregory Palamas in the fourteenth century and shows how it provided a purpose and a goal for the Christian life, both proclaiming and anticipating the Parousia. This fascinating work is a valuable contribution to ecumenical study.”

The Wycliffe Historical Geography Of Bible Lands by Charles F. Pfeiffer & Dr. Howard F. Vos (£20.00)Publisher: Moody Press — 1970Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Good — in Poor Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with heavier fading to the spine and fraying starting at the spine ends and corners. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding. Book shop stamp to the pastedown. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps; Plans;

From the cover: “A survey of the history and geography of all the Bible lands in one volume is long overdue. Numerous books have been written on Palestine, but few have recognized that such widely separated places as Iran, Egypt, Greece and even Italy also provided a geographical stage on which the biblical drama was enacted. In recent years Bible dictionaries, encyclopaedias and atlases have been published in increasing numbers. Some of these have provided information on all the Bible lands, but their approach has been either topical or very largely geographical.

The writers of the present volume have sought to bring together historical, geographical, biblical and archaeological material on all ten areas of the Near Eastern and Mediterranean world that might properly be called “Bible lands”. Separate chapters deal with Mesopotamia, Egypt, Palestine, Phoenicia, Syria, Biblical Iran, Cyprus, Asia Minor, Greece and Italy.

Drs. Pfeiffer and Vos spent seven years on the planning and writing of this major contribution to biblical scholarship. Both men have travelled extensively in the countries about which they have written. Their work reflects a thorough knowledge of Bible lands, the archaeology and history of the Near East, and the Bible itself on which their work rests.

The Wycliffe Historical Geography of Bible Lands is an invaluable reference and study tool. The wealth of history and geography added to significant information concerning national customs, aspirations, and religious beliefs, the whole presented in a warm, clear, forceful style, makes this volume a significant contribution to an important area of knowledge. An unusually useful and entertaining reference work for pastors, students, schools and libraries, and for laymen who seek a clearer understanding of God’s inspired Word.”

One Front Across the World by Douglas Hyde (£19.50)Publisher: William Heinemann — 1955Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with slight soiling to both the panels. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: From the cover: “In 1951 a sensation was caused by a book written by a former news-editor of the Daily Worker who had renounced his Communism for the Roman Catholic faith. The book was Douglas Hyde’s I Believed and it became a best-seller all over the world.

Douglas Hyde recently visited the Far East and in his new book he tells of the invisible struggle which is being waged between Communism and Christianity for the soul of Asia. In the front line of Christian resistance are the missionaries, and Mr. Hyde begins his book with the story of Father Philip Crosbie and other Europeans captured in Korea, who endured the Death March to the Yalu River which has been described by Commissioner Lord of the Salvation Army and Philip Deane, the Observer correspondent. This gives the tone and temper of the Far Eastern situation today, and Douglas Hyde goes on to describe his own reactions to India, Pakistan, Burma, Hong Kong, Japan and Korea, from all of which he carried away the overwhelming impression of a spiritual vacuum created wherever people have renounced their own religion and remain poised between Eastern tradition and Western political realism, between belief and unbelief.

Douglas Hyde combines the observant eye of the trained journalist with the moral vision of a man who has, after a long search, arrived at what he believes is the truth. One Front Across the World is full of vivid facts and details of life in war-scarred Korea; but the facts and details would make little sense had not Douglas Hyde set them so firmly in their place as part of a world-wide pattern.”

Saladin: The Life, the Legend and The Islamic Empire by John Man (£19.50)Publisher: London, Toronto, Sydney, Auckland & Johannesburg: Bantam Press — 2015Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 9780593073728]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Contains: Colour plates; Maps; Chapter headpieces;

From the cover: “Saladin remains one of the most iconic figures of his age. As the man who united the Arabs and saved Islam from Christian crusaders in the twelfth century, he is the Islamic world’s preeminent hero. Ruthless in defence of his faith and brilliant in leadership, he also possessed qualities that won admiration from his Christian foes. He knew the limits of violence, showing such tolerance and generosity that many Europeans, appalled at the brutality of their own people, saw him as the exemplar of their own knightly ideals.

But Saladin is far more than a historical hero. Builder, literary patron and theologian, he is a man for all times, and a symbol of hope for an Arab world once again divided. Centuries after his death, in cities from Damascus to Cairo and beyond, to the Arabian Peninsula and the Gulf, Saladin continues to be an immensely potent symbol of religious and military resistance to the West. He is central to Arab memories, sensibilities and the ideal of a unified Islamic state.

In this authoritative biography, historian John Man brings Saladin and his world to life in vivid detail. Charting his rise to power, his struggle to unify the warring factions of his faith, and his battles to retake Jerusalem and expel Christian influence from Arab lands, Saladin explores the life and the enduring legacy of this champion of Islam, and examines his significance for the world today.”

The Pope's Maestro by Sir Gilbert Levine (£19.00)Publisher: Jossey-Bass — 2010Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 9780470490655]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Includes the unopened CD-Rom to the rear pastedown. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “The Pope’s Maestro tells the inspirational story of a most improbable friendship between the American conductor Sir Gilbert Levine and His Holiness Pope John Paul II. Together they collaborated closely, over a period of more than seventeen years, using music to heal centuries-old religious wounds.

Maestro Levine created and conducted a series of ground-breaking, internationally broadcast concerts. These musical events brought artistic form to Pope John Paul II’s fervent wish to forge an historic bridge first between the Roman Catholic Church and the Jewish people, and then, after 9/11, with the Muslim world as well. These efforts culminated in the Papal Concert to Commemorate the Holocaust in 1994 and the Papal Concert of Reconciliation in 2004.

During his years as Music Director of the Krakow Philharmonic, Sir Gilbert had an insider’s view of Eastern Europe’s inexorable journey from Communism to freedom. And in the years following, he experienced the world of Pope John Paul in a way few lay people, and even fewer Jews, have ever been honored to do. That work, paradoxically enough, deepened Sir Gilbert’s own Jewish belief and practice.

The Pope’s Maestro tells the story of the compelling musical and spiritual journey of two men of different faiths who found in music the power to foster peace and unity in a profoundly divided world.”

Great Railway Journeys of the World: An Encyclopedia of the World's Best Locomotive Journeys by Max Wade-Matthews (£18.50)Publisher: London: Lorenz — 1998Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1859676928]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Gently faded at the spine and onto the very margins of the dust wrapper. Laminate is lifting slightly at the bottom corner of the upper panel otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “There are few finer experiences than the thrill of a classic railway journey. This remains as true today as it was in 1825, when Stephenson’s Rocket first steamed its way from Stockton to Darlington.

Great Railway Journeys of the World describes 95 outstanding railway journeys, experienced first-hand by a team of expert writers. Some of the journeys are quite short but steeped in history, notably the railway down India’s once perilous Khyber Pass; and the narrow-gauge line that carried gold prospectors from the port of Skagway to Whitehorse, in the Yukon. Others, such as the transcontinental lines of Australia and Canada, the Hastern and Oriental Express from Singapore to Bangkok, and the Red Arrow’s journey from Brussels to Hong Kong, cover thousands of kilometres.

For luxury and romance there is nothing to match the Orient Express, the Blue Train from Cape Town to Pretoria, or the wonderfully nostalgic “Palace on Wheels” in Rajasthan; while the many extraordinary feats of engineering described include the Trans-Siberian Railway from Moscow to Vladivostock, the Trans-Ancline Railway in Chile with its 26 tunnels in 70 km (44 miles), and the Brazilian line from Santos where the carriages are still hoisted up the Serro do Mar on a rope. For lovers of the latest and fastest trains, there is the high-speed line from Tokyo to Osaka, or London to Bern by Furostar and TGV — while on many other journeys the trains are still hauled, on gauges broad and narrow, by lovingly preserved steam locomotives.

Long or short, modern or historic, broad-gauge or narrow, each of the journeys described in Great Railway Journeys of the World will whet the appetites of rail enthusiasts everywhere. Packed with information — historical, geographical and technical — and with over 700 photographs of the world’s most remarkable trains, and stunning scenery, this monumental book bears eloquent witness to the enduring romance of rail travel.”

Asia Future Shock: Business Crisis and Opportunity in the Coming Years by Michael Backman (£18.00)Publisher: Palgrave Macmillan — 2008Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0230006779]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: From the cover: “The transformation of China, India and much of the rest of Asia is seismic. Never has the region changed so much in such a short time. But change means opportunity and risk — big risk. Do you know what to expect? Is your business prepared? Are you ready?

The numbers are staggering:

Within ten years, funds under management in China will grow to at least US$1. 5 trillion; 100 million mainland Chinese tourists will pour out of China annually; Singapore will be a major haven for hidden offshore funds; Thai hospitals will be important providers of healthcare in Asia, the Middle East, and to underinsured Americans; and shortages of management talent in India and China will be even more acute.

Within 20 years, a billion more people will live in Asia’s cities than do so already; China will be a major sophisticated weapons exporter; Malaysia will have almost run out of oil; and divorce and family breakdown will mean that the size of the average Asian household will be substantially smaller.

Within 25 years, Japan’s population will have shrunk by 20 million; there will be 250 million more men than women in India and China; half the world’s nuclear reactors will be in Asia; the world’s biggest community of English speakers will be in China; and Asia-wide water shortages will see big hikes in food prices.

Asia Future Shock is designed for corporate strategists and scenario builders, to alert them to these and other major shifts, and to identify the opportunities and risks.”

Developing Your Latent Powers: Thirty Practical Steps to Spiritual Satisfaction by Frederick R. [Robert] Gould (£18.00)Publisher: Robert B. Luce Co. Inc. — 1976Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good+ — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Heavily faded at the spine. Price Clipped. Leans. Previous owners' inscription to the pastedown. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: From the cover: “Developing Your Latent Powers is a practical approach to a way of life that is appealing more and more in the Western World today. It is a statement of a philosophy of life that synthesises elements of Hinduist and Buddhist thought with guidance to those who wish to be less tied to the mechanistic type of life and are aiming at greater spiritual satisfaction. It blends Eastern wisdom with Western knowledge, always avoiding the obfuscation which is common to both.

Readers are told quite frankly of the difficulties that face them in the search for enlightenment, and the exercises, always basic, will help students to attain a positive state of mind: a poise and a glad philosophy. The way of thought and the exercises Frederick Gould describes are not unfamiliar to many people in the West now that the meditative form of philosophic occultism is becoming increasingly popular. Most writing on the subject, though, is hardly easy reading.

Frederick Gould, who describes himself as a ‘humble student’, writes with long experience as a teacher, and the lucidity of his style makes the book readable without tears. He believes the kind of thinking his course advocates is urgently needed in a purposeless age that is the headache following on a night of materialist intoxication — one that has reduced man to servitude to a machine in material life and to the status of machine itself in his spiritual one. But he believes there is another path, another outlook, which he has tested and which has illumined his own life.”

The Buddhist Writings of Lafcadio Hearn by Edited by Kenneth Rexroth (£18.00)Publisher: Wildwood House — 1981Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0704504219]Condition: Good. A pleasant enough reading copy. Gently faded at the spine with light reading creases. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned.Description: First in this edition. [First: Houghton Mifflin, 1977] From the cover: “Lafcadio Hearn was born on the Greek island of Leucadia in 1850. After a career in journalism in the United States, Hearn travelled to Japan in 1890 to write articles about Japanese life for Harper’s Magazine. He remained there for the rest of his life, taking a Japanese wife (by whom he had three sons and a daughter) and assuming Japanese citizenship in 1895. He died in 1904, and was buried after Buddhist ceremonies in Zoshigaya cemetery in northern Tokyo. This collection of his writings on Buddhism was taken from the bulk of his writings by Kenneth Rexroth. The organization of the selections reflects Hearn’s chronological progress from a rendering of the simple tales and stories illustrative of the common folk’s beliefs in Buddhism to the more abstract philosophic doctrines of the Mahayana Buddhist sects in Japan. Of the many writers who have commented upon Buddhism in Japan, none has stood the test of time so well as Lafcadio Hearn.”Notes: Size: C Format (8½" x 5¼"). On Understanding Japanese Religion by Joseph M. [Mitsuo] Kitagawa (£17.00)Publisher: Princeton: Princeton University Press — 1987Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0691102295]Condition: Very Good. Gently faded at the spine. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: A Later Printing. Contains: Chronological tables; Glossary;

From the cover: “Joseph Kitagawa, one of the founders of the field of history of religions and an eminent scholar of the religions of Japan, published his classic book Religion in Japanese History in 1966. Since then, he has written a number of extremely influential essays that illustrate approaches to the study of Japanese religious phenomena. To date, these essays have remained scattered in various scholarly journals. This book makes available nineteen of these articles, important contributions to our understanding of Japan’s intricate combination of indigenous Shinto, Confucianism, Taoism, the Yin-Yang School, Buddhism, and folk religion. In sections on prehistory, the historic development of Japanese religion, the Shinto tradition, the Buddhist tradition, and the modem phase of the Japanese religious tradition, the author develops a number of valuable methodological approaches. The volume also includes an appendix on Buddhism in America.

Asserting that the study of Japanese religion is more than an umbrella term covering investigations of separate traditions, Professor Kitagawa approaches the subject from an interdisciplinary standpoint. Skilfully combining political, cultural, and social history, he depicts a Japan that seems a microcosm of the religious experience of humankind.”

The Rise and Fall of Imperial Japan, 1894-1945 by Edited by S. L. Mayer (£16.00)Publisher: Bison Books — 1985Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0861241428]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the edges, short closed and tape-reinforced to the spine ends. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Reprint. [First: 1984 thus, previously published as ‘The Japanese War Machine’ in 1976] Maps to the endpapers. Illustrated with photographs, in colour & black and white. From the cover: “In 1868, Japan emerged from feudalism and civil conflict as a comparatively undeveloped industrial state in an age of European imperialism in East Asia. Within a generation, Japan had risen to the ranks of the foremost industrial and military powers in the Western Pacific. A generation later, Japan had become the paramount power in East Asia, and her naval and air forces spread Japanese power across the Pacific. The formidable weapon built in the name of the Emperor swept across China and Manchuria; her air forces pummelled Pearl Harbor and Darwin; her armies marched to Singapore and the gates of India. Her navies seized some Aleutian islands and strafed the California coast. By 1942 the world had come to know the power of the most devastating force in the Pacific — the Japanese War Machine.

The force and power of the Japanese War Machine is told here by some of the world’s leading experts in guns, tanks, planes, and ships of World War II. The drama of Japan’s seizure of Manchuria, the take-over of the State by the Army, the invasion of China, the simultaneous attack on Malaya, Hawaii, the Philippines and the oil-rich Dutch East Indies is told in all the horror and shock the Japanese invader placed before Western eyes. The fall of Singapore and Hong Kong, the conquest of Burma and Indo-China took place within a hundred days. The flag of the Rising Sun ruled a maritime empire from the Russian border to the gates of Australia, from Burma to Midway.

But the strength of the Japanese War Machine depended on Japanese industrial power, which in the end, was no match for the United States and its Allies. The Japanese soldier, infused with the warrior code of Bushido fought hard and long in New Guinea’s jungles; as the struggle was brought closer to Japan’s home islands, the Japanese soldier fought on tenaciously in the Philippines and on Iwo Jima and Okinawa. The air forces began suicide missions, thekamikaze, which drove into Allied aircraft, heroically and fanatically.. .but all too little, too late. The nuclear holocaust, which ended World War II, left a ruined Japan and a wrecked Japanese War Machine.

THE RISE AND FALL OF IMPERIAL JAPAN is the tragic and noble history of a gallant people led into a misguided war. The millions who suffered in Asia and the Pacific in the wake of the Japanese War Machine bear silent tribute to its folly.”
