Genes Involved in Plant Defense by T. Boller; F. Meins; (£64.00)Publisher: Springer-Verlag — 1992Binding: Hardback First Edition. [ISBN: 0387823123]Condition: Good+. Ex-company library with lable to the spine and stamp to ffep. Mildly bumped at head & tail of spine and corners. Text bright and tight.Description: Many fungi and bacteria that associate with plants are potentially harmful and can cause disease, while others enter into mutually beneficial symbioses. Co-evolution of plants with pathogenic and symbiotic microbes has lead to refined mechanisms of reciprocal recognition, defence and counter-defence. Genes in both partners determine and regulate these mechanisms. A detailed understanding of these genes provides basic biological insights as well as a starting point for developing novel methods of crop protection against pathogens. This volume deals with defence-related genes of plants and their regulation as well as with the genes of microbes involved in their interaction with plants. Teamwork in Industry by F. J. Burns Morton (£63.00)Publisher: Chapman & Hall — 1948Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good — in Poor Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with loss at the head of the upper panel and closed tears to the lower. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Tanning and spotting to the blanks and endpapers. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned.Description: From the cover: “The author’s previous book, The New Foremanship, endeavoured to propound and analyse the problem of supervision in the light of present circumstances and likely trends. It was suggested that new methods of supervision were "necessary to bring social relationships, which in industry had remained static, into line with the great developments which had taken place in technical organisation; and further, what was needed in foremanship was also necessary in other managerial practices.

This present book, which is also addressed to all in authority and to those thinking employees who believe in the possibilities, of their jobs, sets out to show the direction of the second step. It examines the nature of better working relationships, and shows that harmonious, consciously directed working together leads to increased efficiency. Thus the name Teamwork in Industry.

The twelve chapters discuss such vital topics as the human factor and the influencing of human behaviour, co-operation and industrial relations, job satisfaction, selection and training of staff, incentives, leadership, supervision, discipline, absenteeism, working conditions and social organisation. The book concludes with a useful bibliography and index.”

H.M.S. Electra as Told to A. V. Sellwood by T. J. Cain (£43.00)Publisher: London: Frederick Muller Limited — 1960Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Good — in Poor Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with damp wrinkling to both panels and a short, closed, tear to the head of the upper panel. Price Clipped. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding. Leans slightly. Pages very gently age-tanned. Description: 2nd impression. [First Edition: 1959] Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Portrait to the frontispiece;

From the cover: “The only time that H. M. S. Electra got a wartime “mention” in the national press was when three-quarters of her crew were no longer able to read it. They were dead.

For it was the disastrous yet little-known Battle of the Java Sea — where a British, Australian, American and Dutch force was annihilated by the Japanese — that put Electron’s name in print.

‘H. M. S. Electra attacked through the smoke and was seen no more…’

The epitaph was terse, though moving. It left much unsaid. And today, in H. M. S. Electra, Lieutenant-Commander T. J. Cain — who fired her torpedoes during her last desperate battle — does much to do justice, long belated, to both the ship and the company who served her.

The result is sensational. For Cain’s story, prepared with the aid of author and naval correspondent A. V. Sellwood, reveals that the “unknown” Electra was the un-publicised companion-in-battle of some of the best-known names in the Royal Navy, and was the witness of events that shook the world. The sinking of the Athenia, the Ark Royal’s attacks on the Nazis in Norway, the first Russian convoy, the defence of Singapore — wherever there was trouble Electra was sure to be found.

SHE was the unnamed destroyer that sailed with Hood to find the Bismarck, and picked up the former’s three survivors…

SHE was at the sinking of the Repulse and Prince of Wales, and snatched part of their crews to safety beneath the mammoth Jap air attack…

And SHE was destroyed during a lone torpedo onslaught against an entire Japanese fleet, to cover the disabled Exeter, famous veteran of the River Plate.

H. M. S. Electra is not “just a war-story” — it is also a history. But it is a very human history — history as seen by a man who helped to make it.

Lieut. -Commander Cain, who, after a fantastic escape in a U. S. submarine, was later captured and spent the rest of the war as a prisoner of the Japanese, is pungent in his comments regarding the blunders of the time. But equally he is an enthusiast — for Electra, her officers, and the men who made her what he calls: A happy ship — the finest I have ever known.”

The Barrier and the Javelin: Japanese and Allied Strategies, February-June, 1942 by H. P. Willmott (£36.00)Publisher: Annapolis: Naval Institute Press — 1983Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0870210920]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges. Distributors sticker covers publisher colophon on the title page. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps; Tables;

From the cover: “H. P. Willmott’s perceptive analysis of Japanese and Allied strategies in the Pacific war has set new standards for World War Two historians. The scope and depth of the research he did for the first book of his Pacific trilogy, Empires in the Balance, have earned him a reputation as a major chronicler of the period. With this second volume, Willmott continues to offer significant new material and interpretations that are certain to warrant further study.

The Barrier and the Javelin begins with a thoughtful assessment of the critical situation in which Japan found herself in the spring of 1942. Even by that early stage of the Pacific war, the fundamental weakness of the Japanese effort was evident. Japan had gone to war with little more than a five-month plan of campaign and the conviction that she could not be defeated by enemies who were her moral inferiors. Her intention had been to conquer territories essential to her economic survival and then fight a defensive war that would exhaust her enemies and lead them to a negotiated settlement. By the spring Japan’s leaders were becoming uncom-fortably aware that their enemies would not negotiate and that they themselves lacked the plans, and perhaps the means, to make them change their minds. Willmott sets out the arguments over strategy that plagued the Japanese naval command as it tried to formulate a coherent response to this potentially disastrous situation. In so doing he suggests that the weaknesses of the command’s decision-making process kept the Japanese from taking the one course of action that could have changed the outcome of the war, and were responsible for the ill-considered plan of campaign that began to fall apart in the Coral Sea in May’and ended in disaster four weeks later at Midway.

The book, however, is not confined to an examination of Japanese policymaking. Just as Empires in the Balance provides & critical appraisal of the moves made by all the combatants during the first five months of the war, so The Barrier and the Javelin places the Allied part of the February-June 1942 record alongside that of the Japanese. In doing so, it examines why the British and their dominions were totally unable to put together a proper Pacific policy in the opening phase of the war, and why the Americans came to accept a commitment to fight in the southwest Pacific when this area had barely figured in their prewar calculations. American intelligence gathering — Operation Magic — and its effect on the progress of the war are also described in full.

Willmott follows his assessment of the Allied situation with a detailed analysis of the battle of the Coral Sea and the action off Midway, which at last places these battles in their proper context. Debunking long-held beliefs about the com-parative strengths of the Japanese and Allied forces, he contends that in both battles the weaker fleet was defeated, not victorious as most accounts suggest. He further argues that if Japan was indeed fated to lose the war, then her defeat at Midway can hardly be regarded as the decisive battle so many claim it to be. Inevitability and decisiveness, he points out, are mutually exclusive terms.

Many readers will find Willmott’s treatment of the Japanese side of the battle of Midway an intriguing alternative to other books on the subject. He reveals some important new information that finally explains the inconsistencies found in previous accounts. His condemnation of Admiral Yama-moto’s inept handling of the entire fiasco is unusually clear and hard-hitting.

This view of the flow of events in the first half of 1942 provides one of the most comprehensive, balanced and readable studies of the period ever written. It will be of enduring interest to general readers as well as professional historians and students of World War Two.”

From the cover: “Luftwaffe pilots of the Russian Front were the highest scoring aces of any aerial conflict in history. This book traces the careers of the pilots who flew the Fw 190 and the Bf 109 in the skies over Russia, and reveals how they achieved their remarkable successes. The Bf 109 was the most commonly used fighter on the Front, and saw action from Operation Barbarossa through to the Defence of the Reich in 1945. The Fw 190, meanwhile, proved itself to be arguably Germany’s best piston-engined fighter, with many of its aces scoring over 100 kills.”

From the cover: “This is the story of a soldier, Major General Ken Perkins, CB, MBE, DFC, who rose from the ranks to hold a number of important positions. It is a chronicle of an unusual career spent in pursuit of excitement which included, early on, flying as a pilot during the Korean War, and, much later, command of Arab, British and Iranian forces during counter-insurgency operations which preserved the Straits of Hormuz for the Western World. Even a desk in Whitehall proved amusing, particularly when Margaret Thatcher became Prime Minister.

In the course of this career he was awarded, in addition to his British decorations, the Hashemite Order of Independence, the Order of Oman and the Selangor Distinguished Conduct Medal. He leaves us at sixty launching into a new life: a second marriage to a business adversary, and a second family.”

Each chapter in the third edition has been extensively revised and updated. It includes an entirely new chapter on political concepts. Its coverage of the social context in Britain is enhanced. A new guest writer, Jonathan Tonge, provides a revised and extended chapter on Northern Ireland.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 7¼". 571 pages. The Most Beautiful Villages of France by Dominique Reperant (£28.50)Publisher: Thames & Hudson — 2002Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0500541620]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and the top corners of the boards with commensurate wear to the dust wrapper. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Jacket illustration: Front: A view from the castle of the medieval streets of Turenne. Back: The village of Penne, built beneath a rock, is one of the most breathtaking sights in the gorge of Aveyron. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs; Plans;

From the cover: “Here is a visual celebration of France’s most beautiful and perfectly preserved medieval villages. Spectacular colour photographs capture their regional ambience and special character, while detailed texts explain the foundation of each village and the growth of the community.

The demands of defence and trade intertwine, from the walled bastides of the Southwest with their great market squares, to the hill-top refuges of the Mediterranean, precariously perched and turned towards the sun. Each village is a harmonious marriage of architecture and landscape: the ancient timber buildings of Saint-Veran are surrounded by alpine forests; the startlingly rosy village of Collanges-la-Rouge is named after the local red sandstone of which it is made. Here too are Mont-Saint-Michel, Vezelay and Conques, where settlements cluster around majestic monuments from the Middle Ages.

Complementing the selection of villages is a list of nearby hotels and restaurants. An extended list of protected villages will prove a useful guide for travellers to France and for all those with an interest in the preservation of architectural heritage.”

Camouflage and Art: Design for Deception in World War 2 by Henrietta Goodden (£28.00)Publisher: London: Unicorn Press — 2007Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 9780906290873]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: Contains: Black & white photographs; Facsimiles; Colour plates; Illustrated endpapers and blanks; Glossary;

From the cover: “The group of talented young British designers, architects and artists who joined the Directorate of Camouflage at the beginning of World War 2 shared more in common than their professional skills; many were graduates of the Royal College of Art and some, at the end of the war, became tutors and professors of the College under its new Principal, Robin Darwin.

Basing the research for her book on Ministry of Defence records, Royal College of Art archives and help from the families of wartime ‘camoufleurs’, Henrietta Goodden explores the development of the extraordinary ideas which were to play such an important part in defeating the enemy in the air, on land and at sea. Among the names in wartime camouflage later to become famous in other walks of life were Basil Spence, architect, Oliver Messel, designer, Victor Stiebel, couturier, Edward Seago, painter, and Hugh Casson, architect and President of the Royal Academy of Arts. The copious images in this book, illustrating different methods and applications of camouflage, are much more than just military records and instructions and vividly evoke the atmosphere and conditions of wartime Britain.

The ingenious solutions and products of fertile, inventive and sometimes eccentric minds to confuse and deceive attackers, are the subject of this well-researched and illustrated book.”

Wisdom Of The Wild: How We Treat Our Planet by Anon. (£26.50)Publisher: Word Wide Fund for Nature — 1993Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges. Presentation plate to the first blank.Description: Illustrated with colour photographs. From the cover: “There is no turning back. There never has been in history. Two hundred million American citizens are not going to leave the USA just to give back to the Indians the land that was stolen from them. The Inuit in Greenland are not about to climb into their kayaks to paddle back up the river of history. The wisdom with which “wild” peoples have animated their world cannot be fetched back at will. Nevertheless, there is a great deal to learn. This, for example: how, on the threshold of the third millennium, can we live once again in a finite world without consuming it? Pedagogues tell us that children need elements of the wild and disorder in order to become mentally sound adults. The child in its den is said to be subconsciously remembering the feeling of safety which our ancestors experienced in caves in the childhood of mankind. In Sweden, they let children fly back to the beginnings of humanity on the wings of their imagination, as it were. The wild as a tonic.

Henry David Thoreau’s suggestion that every major city should have some wildness in its vicinity (because otherwise its inhabitants would revert to the wild) is almost one hundred and fifty years old — and highly topical in view of the frustration which people feel in our concrete bunkers.

An end must be put to the dominance of the right angle. Protection programmes for spacious areas of wilderness have one purpose, among others, namely to preserve the charm of untouched nature. Real-life magic! Magic, or rather cheap tricks — that is what our oh-so-en-lightened world thought of the healing knowledge of the jungle Indians for such a long time. Until, at the sight of the burning rain forests, they realised that the best pharmacy in the world was going up in flames.

The awareness of its utility should not be the rescuers’ sole motive, however. If we only take up arms in defence of the earth where our immediate living conditions are threatened, we shall soon be sitting amidst the ruins of a barren planet. It is (unfortunately, some would say) not the case that when the trees die, man also dies immediately. There are no trees in the Mongolian steppes, but they are still not dead. The fact is, as an Indian chief once said: “After the deaths of plants and animals, you will die of the great loneliness in your hearts.” An appeal has been filed against this death sentence. This book contains a few passages from the defence counsel’s speech.”

William Tyndale: A Biography by David Daniell (£24.00)Publisher: Yale University Press — 1994Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0300061323]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper with the gilt titling rubbed at the authors' name. Text complete, clean and tight. A nice copy overall. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles;

From the cover: “William Tyndale (1494-1536) was the first person to translate the Bible into English from its original Greek and Hebrew and the first to print the Bible in English, which he did in exile. Giving the laity access to the word of God outraged the clerical establishment in England: he was condemned, hunted, and eventually murdered. However, his masterly translation formed the basis of all English bibles — including the ‘King James Bible’, many of whose finest passages were taken unchanged, though unacknowledged, from Tyndale’s work.

This important book, published in the quincentenary year of his birth, is the first major biography of Tyndale in sixty years. It sets the story of his life in the intellectual and literary contexts of his immense achievement and explores his influence on the theology, literature and humanism of Renaissance and Reformation Europe.

David Daniell, editor of Tyndale’s New Testament and Tyndale’s Old Testament, eloquently describes the dramatic turns in Tyndale’s life. Born in England and educated at Oxford, Tyndale was ordained as a priest. When he decided to translate the Bible into English, he realised that it was impossible to do that work in England and moved to Germany, living in exile there and in the Low Countries while he translated and printed first the New Testament and then half of the Old Testament. These were widely circulated — and denounced — in England. Yet Tyndale continued to write from abroad, publishing polemics in defence of the principles of the English Reformation. He was seized in Antwerp, imprisoned in Vilvoorde Castle near Brussels and burnt at the stake for heresy in 1536.

Daniell discusses Tyndale’s achievement as biblical translator and expositor, analyses his writing, examines his stylistic influence on writers from Shakespeare to those of the twentieth century, and explores the reasons why he has not been more highly regarded. His book brings to life one of the great geniuses of the age.”

There are also chapters on French external and defence policy and on the education system, all of which are set in the context of the political system as a whole. Charts of War: The Maps and Charts That Have Informed and Illustrated War At Sea by John Blake (£20.00)Publisher: London: Conway — 2006Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1844860310]Condition: Very Good — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper pulled at the head of the upper panel with two small nicks toward the top corner. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs; Maps;

From the cover: “Information is power, and in centuries past sea charts were guarded by both a ship’s navigator and the State, stretched on oak boards or rolled in leather cylindrical quivers, locked away. As the European nations began their territorial acquisition and contest in earnest, the information charts contained of harbour approaches, coastal landmarks and hazards, currents and tides, could give one side or another the advantage.

From the ships of small expeditionary fleets, which carried navigational charts, to the requirements of modern ships involved in combined operations, which need charts to include a whole range of information, John Blake has produced a fascinating, illustrated account of the role that charts have played in planning, preventing, conducting and recording war at sea. The selection not only includes charts depicting major battles and amphibious operations, but those drawn up for tactical and espionage purposes, for coastal defence and the positioning of forts along rivers and at the entrance to harbours.

Chapters run in chronological order, organized according to the overall political scene, but the main focus is on the development of chart making and surveying in relation to changing warfare techniques. Informative captions accompany each chart, setting them in historical context and providing illuminating details about the main protagonists and the chart makers and surveyors themselves. Taken from a range of international maritime archives, they include portolan charts of Spanish acquisitions in the New World; Francis Drake’s attack of Cadiz in 1587, known as ‘the singeing of the King of Spain’s beard’; the Dutch attack on Chatham in 1667 during the Second Anglo-Dutch War; a plan of Chesapeake Bay where British naval forces failed to relieve General Cornwallis during the American War of Independence; William Bligh’s chart of the Battle of Copenhagen in 1801; charts of the Battle of Jutland, one British, one German; and the operational chart drawn up before the D-Day landings at Omaha beach.”

Second World War: New Edition by Martin Gilbert (£20.00)Publisher: Orion — 2003Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 1842122622]Condition: Very Good. Light reading creases to the slightly bowed spine. Leans slightly. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: A Later Printing. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps;

From the cover: “The Second World War was the most destructive human conflict in history. Forty million people died during the 2,174 days from Germany’s attack on Poland in September 1939 to the surrender of Japan in August 1945.

Only one historian, Martin Gilbert, has the scholarship and breadth of vision to tell the story as it ought to be told. In this, the first total history of a global war, Martin Gilbert weaves together all its aspects — political, diplomatic, military and civilian. From week to week, month to month and year to year, the terrible progress of the juggernaut of death is charted. Martin Gilbert’s purpose is to show what happened, not from the point of view of any one of the warring nations but from a global perspective. In this he is triumphantly successful. Whether Gilbert is telling of the magnificent defence of Stalingrad or the endurance of London in the Blitz, no reader can fail to discover a new vision of what the Second World War meant for those who fought and suffered, and of its legacy for us today.”

Saladin: The Life, the Legend and The Islamic Empire by John Man (£19.50)Publisher: London, Toronto, Sydney, Auckland & Johannesburg: Bantam Press — 2015Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 9780593073728]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Contains: Colour plates; Maps; Chapter headpieces;

From the cover: “Saladin remains one of the most iconic figures of his age. As the man who united the Arabs and saved Islam from Christian crusaders in the twelfth century, he is the Islamic world’s preeminent hero. Ruthless in defence of his faith and brilliant in leadership, he also possessed qualities that won admiration from his Christian foes. He knew the limits of violence, showing such tolerance and generosity that many Europeans, appalled at the brutality of their own people, saw him as the exemplar of their own knightly ideals.

But Saladin is far more than a historical hero. Builder, literary patron and theologian, he is a man for all times, and a symbol of hope for an Arab world once again divided. Centuries after his death, in cities from Damascus to Cairo and beyond, to the Arabian Peninsula and the Gulf, Saladin continues to be an immensely potent symbol of religious and military resistance to the West. He is central to Arab memories, sensibilities and the ideal of a unified Islamic state.

In this authoritative biography, historian John Man brings Saladin and his world to life in vivid detail. Charting his rise to power, his struggle to unify the warring factions of his faith, and his battles to retake Jerusalem and expel Christian influence from Arab lands, Saladin explores the life and the enduring legacy of this champion of Islam, and examines his significance for the world today.”

Warworks: Women, Photography and the Iconography of War by Val Williams (£18.00)Publisher: London: Virago Press Limited — 1994Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 1853815918]Condition: Very Good. Light creasing to the bottom corner of the upper wrapper otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: Published in conjunction with an exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum, 11th January - 19th March 1995. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “One of Britain’s most noted photographic curators and historians, Val Williams explores the myriad ways in which women photographers have used war to express major issues in contemporary art and society. In addressing collective memory, gender, sexuality and mass communication, she removes war photography from its niche as reportage and places it as a central channel for the contemporary imagination.

The Holocaust is looked at very differently in the works of Lee Miller and Rachel Lichtenstein; parody is present in Martha Rosler’s Bringing the War Home (House Beautiful) and in Anna Fox’s Weekend Wargames ; Deborah Blight’s Battlefield Panoramas explore war as lost memories; Barbara Alper’s Gulf Channel examines the new reporters, satellite TV; and Moira Mclver looks at men dressed for conflict. The photographs and accompanying essays provide a challenging dimension to photographic and cultural history. “

Battle Castles: 500 Years of Knights and Siege Warfare by Dan Snow (£16.00)Publisher: HarperPress — 2012Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 9780007455584]Condition: Very Good — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper with a small, closed, nick to the head of the spine. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs; Black & White Drawings;

From the cover: “Europe, a thousand years ago — the 1 Vikings are on the move; Christendom is militarised and looking eastwards. Amidst this simmering disquiet, a new weapon of war arises, one that will dominate the landscape and politics for hundreds of years to come: the castle.

In this action-packed and fully illustrated account, Dan Snow shows how medieval castles were not just the military ‘bones of a kingdom’, but also the heart and soul of political and cultural life. Battle Castles explores six of the world’s most important castles: Dover Castle, ‘the Key to England’, for centuries the first line of defence against the French; Edward I’s Conwy, his most formidable Welsh fortress; Chateau Gaillard, Richard I’s stronghold in Normandy; Gibralfaro, the last vanguard of Moorish rule in southern Spain; Malbork, headquarters of the Teutonic Knights in Poland; and, in Syria, Krak des Chevaliers, a feat of Crusader engineering. These castles were forged to withstand the fiercest of onslaughts and each bore witness to a pivotal field of conflict.

Battle Castles brings to life the epic sieges that these mighty fortifications endured, plunging the reader deep into the world of the Middle Ages. It explores how and why these castles were built, how daily life felt within them, how they were attacked, defended — and finally sacked. Join Dan Snow on the ramparts and in the tunnels, and experience the battle scenes that transformed empires into dust, and mortals into legends.”

Air War Iraq by Tim Ripley (£14.50)Publisher: Pen & Sword — 2004Binding: Paperback First Edition. [ISBN: 1844150690]Condition: Near Fine.Description: The three-week-long assault on Iraq in March and April 2003 was the culmination of well over a year's worth of preparation. This book looks at how US, British and Australian air commanders pulled together their plans and executed them to overwhelm Iraq's defences. This book tells the story of the build-up and the war from the perspective of the US, British and Australian airmen. Unfortunately little has emerged to date from Iraq's airmen and air defence troops, so their story can only be told in part. This is not an account of why America, Britain and Australia went to war against Iraq. That story is for others to tell. 144pp. Size: 4to Crown (9¾" x 7½")
