Out of the Crisis by W. Edwards Deming (£34.00)Publisher: Cambridge University Press — 1988Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0521305535]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Top edge of the text block tanned. It is a practical book, with abundant illustrations, written for managers — whether in the manufacturing or service sectors. Dr Deming has a worldwide reputation for his work in establishing statistical process control techniques for quality as the route to competitive success in the new economic age. His involvement with Japanese managers is widely accepted as having contributed to their enviable reputation for quality manufactured goods.

The book provides a full account of Deming’s thinking on the primacy of management’s role in improving quality and productivity. He demonstrates what managers do wrong and how costs, dependability and quality can and must be improved. This is not just another manual of techniques; Deming provides a new theory of management which gets to the roots of the problems of industrial competitiveness which face managers today..”

New London Architecture by Kenneth Powell (£20.00)Publisher: London: Merrell — 2001Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1858941504]Condition: Very Good — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper, more heavily at the foot of the upper panel and the tail of the spine. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “London today is vibrantly reinventing itself, and the quality of its new buildings is putting the city at the forefront of world architectural innovation. Through a wealth of stunning new projects and bold revisions of its older buildings, architects from all quarters are reimagining London’s cityscape.

New London Architecture paints a comprehensive picture of the most important recent developments in London, as well as works yet to be completed. Renowned architectural writer Kenneth Powell examines over 100 different projects, and traces the political manoeuvring and creative flowerings that are reshaping modern London.

The architectural renaissance of Britain’s capital has affected the design of everything from residential skyscrapers to corporate offices; from internationally important sports facilities to chic new boutiques; from imaginative new medical centres and libraries to striking riverside dwellings for students. This book illustrates in full colour not just the headline-grabbing public works such as the British Airways London Eye, the Jubilee line extension, the Millennium Bridge and interventions at the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum, but also a wide variety of smaller-scale projects that together offer a manifesto for radical change.

Old battle lines between radicalism and conservatism have been abandoned as Londoners are proving themselves ever more ready to respond to the ambitious and dynamic changes happening around them. Norman Foster’s Swiss Re tower — the controversial ‘gherkin’ — being built in the heart of London’s financial district could not have been countenanced even a decade ago. The Prince of Wales’s famous attack on the proposed National Gallery extension as “a monstrous carbuncle” now appears entirely outmoded.

With illustrations, plans and critical texts of the projects that are combining to reinvigorate London’s urban landscape, New London Architecture provides a detailed and authoritative portrait, indispensable to professionals and public alike, of a city avid to embrace”

Inside Japan's Power Houses: The Culture, Mystique and Future of Japan's Greatest Corporations by Kevin Rafferty (£19.00)Publisher: London: Weidenfeld & Nicolson — 1995Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0297814540]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges with a nick to the top corner of the lower panel. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Tables;

From the cover: “Exactly 50 years ago the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki left Japan defeated and in ashes. Today it has risen miraculously to be one of the world’s two economic megapowcrs and is demanding a role as a political great power. The story of Japan’s phoenix-like rise has often been told, but the economic culture of the country’s mega-businesses is still a mystery, and so are the powerful ties between businessmen, bureaucrats and politicians, the ‘unholy trinity’ of Japan Inc.

Kevin Rafferty, who has spent 25 years living and working in Asia, has been granted privileged access to the powerhouses of Japan’s economic miracle and has talked freely to the key figures, including grand opera singer Yoh Kurosawa of the Industrial Bank of Japan, Hampstead-born and Harvard-educated Minoru Makihara of Mitsubishi Corporation, shogi master Fumio Sato of Toshiba and the Toyoda car-making brothers, Shoichiro and Tatsuro, perhaps the most powerful men in Japanese industry. In a country where open and vigorous argument is often avoided, these men talk frankly about their achievements and the problems ahead.

But the author has gone beyond the powerful companies, like Matsushita, Nippon Steel, Toshiba, Toyota and the aerospace and banking giants. He examines the much-vaunted education system to assess the future challenge. He has also talked to the almighty mandarins of the finance ministry and the all too frequently corrupt politicians. The result is a cool appraisal of how different Japan really is, of the price paid for economic maturity and a strong yen, the need for political reform and — most vital for the rest of the world — whether Japan can become a ‘normal’ nation sitting at the top political table.”

Asia Future Shock: Business Crisis and Opportunity in the Coming Years by Michael Backman (£18.00)Publisher: Palgrave Macmillan — 2008Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0230006779]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: From the cover: “The transformation of China, India and much of the rest of Asia is seismic. Never has the region changed so much in such a short time. But change means opportunity and risk — big risk. Do you know what to expect? Is your business prepared? Are you ready?

The numbers are staggering:

Within ten years, funds under management in China will grow to at least US$1. 5 trillion; 100 million mainland Chinese tourists will pour out of China annually; Singapore will be a major haven for hidden offshore funds; Thai hospitals will be important providers of healthcare in Asia, the Middle East, and to underinsured Americans; and shortages of management talent in India and China will be even more acute.

Within 20 years, a billion more people will live in Asia’s cities than do so already; China will be a major sophisticated weapons exporter; Malaysia will have almost run out of oil; and divorce and family breakdown will mean that the size of the average Asian household will be substantially smaller.

Within 25 years, Japan’s population will have shrunk by 20 million; there will be 250 million more men than women in India and China; half the world’s nuclear reactors will be in Asia; the world’s biggest community of English speakers will be in China; and Asia-wide water shortages will see big hikes in food prices.

Asia Future Shock is designed for corporate strategists and scenario builders, to alert them to these and other major shifts, and to identify the opportunities and risks.”

Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the edges, slightly tanned. A nice copy of a not-so-common title.Description: From the cover: “Are management consultants the answer to a businessman’s prayer? Or are they unprincipled rogues who, for an exorbitant fee, tell a company nothing it does not already know and saddle it with a lot of elaborate, unnecessary and expensive procedures?

To answer these extreme questions and many more between, Laura Tatham has obtained first-hand evidence from dozens of consultants and from as many clients, both satisfied and dissatisfied. This book is the result of her inquiries.

An impartial survey, The Efficiency Experts examines in detail what management consultants are, how they work and what they set out to accomplish. It suggests ways in which the businessman can make best use of consultants, and how he can assess whether or not a firm is likely to do a good job. A number of case histories describe both successful and unsuccessful consulting assignments.”

[First: Ian Allan, 1986] Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs; Tables;

From the cover: “This pictorial record of British Railways covers four eventful decades of that much-maligned but nevertheless vital organisation.

The central characters are, as always, the trains and the locomotives that haul them.

From the austere days of the early Nationalisation era, to the more colourful but uncertain railway scene of recent years, the image of the rolling stock constantly changes — grimy black steam locos with ‘blood-and-custard’ carriages give way to the Diesel era, and the sterile uniformity of Corporate Blue livery is in turn replaced by an explosion of exciting new colour schemes, reflecting the revised structure of BR, which may ultimately signal a return to some form of private ownership.”

The National Wealth: Who Gets What in Britain by Dominic Hobson (£14.50)Publisher: HarperCollins — 1999Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0002559137]Condition: Very Good. Edges of the text block lightly soiled and tanned otherwise a very well presented copy.Description: First in this, paperback, edition. From the cover: “This is the most comprehensive, lucid and authoritative account of the state of the nation since Anthony Sampson’s classic Anatomy of Britain. Starting with a simple question — ‘who owns Britain?’ — Dominic Hobson has created a colossal tour de force: a book which not only ranges across every aspect of wealth and income in Britain today, but also explores the relationship between money, power and status from the Norman Conquest to New Labour. Huge in scope, masterly in presentation, The National Wealth reveals the social, economic and financial (rather than the political or bureaucratic) workings of Britain. It tells us who has the money, and how they get it; and, ultimately, who owns Britain today. The author describes the draining away of money and power from the great estates of the realm such as the Crown, the Aristocracy, the Church and Oxbridge; the aggrandisement of the State in the post-war socialist era, followed by the greatest transfer of ownership in Britain since the Dissolution of the Monasteries — the privatisation of the nationalised industries; the origins of the greatest personal fortunes and the psychology of the truly rich; the rise of the industrial Fat Cats and the new professional elites of the City and the Law. The book concludes with a probing analysis of the relationship between the PLC (the dominant form of social organisation in Britain today) and the great institutional investors who have become the most influential repositories of the national wealth. Throughout, the narrative concentrates on people as well as organisations: on people as voters, taxpayers, patients, students and parents as well as people at play and at work — MPs, civil servants, judges, dons, clergymen, farmers, lawyers, bankers, accountants, architects, doctors and dentists, teachers, army officers, managers, journalists, shopkeepers, publicans, sportsmen, charity-workers and pensioners. The National Wealth is a magnificent summation of Britain at the turn of the century, a panoramic and trenchantly expressed overview of the division of the spoils, and a searching examination of the gap between rhetoric and reality in public and private affairs.”Notes: Size: Trade Paperback (9¼" x 6"). 1350 pages. Because, as Peter Drucker once said, everything you learned is wrong — at best, it is misleading and insufficient. You typically learn in school, workshops, and seminars that if you can manage the work and serve the people, you have what it takes. It's not true. Maybe you have enough stuff to be a pretty good manager, but it takes a lot more to be a good leader. The Wizard and the Warrior gives leaders the insight and courage they need to take risks on behalf of values they cherish and the people they guide. Great leaders must act both as wizard, calling on imagination, creativity, meaning, and magic, and as warrior, mobilizing strength, courage, and willingness to fight as necessary to fulfil their mission.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". From the cover: “While the design and service histories of warships are well covered in print, until now there has been no single-volume guide to the companies and state yards which built them. This encyclopaedic new work fills that gap, with concise ‘biographies’ of the shipbuilders, describing their corporate development, highlights in their histories, and listing the major ships they built. International in coverage, the book is divided by country, by region and by yard, and is illustrated throughout with maps and plans showing the locations of the builders and the ground layout of the most important shipyards at significant dates in their history. The book also includes details of naval bases and repair facilities, while a general introduction points out the salient features of warship development over three centuries, from wood and canvas to the technology of steam, steel and electronics in order to explain the changes in the world’s shipbuilding industries. This comprehensive guide has a place on the bookshelf of any naval historian or enthusiast.”

Why do others languish as their traditional way of doing business turns into a no-profit zone?

The Profit Zone provides the answers. It is a brilliant, original, and practical explanation of how and why high profit happens.

It reveals the profit strategies of twelve of today’s great success stories — a group of companies and executives that have created over $700 billion in market value for their shareholders. More important, it shows the lessons that can be learned from the business design of these companies — adaptations that enabled them to always be several steps ahead of competitors in meeting customer priorities..”

From the flap: “The authors trace the high rate of business failure back to bad marketing strategy, and the even worse implementation of that strategy. Excess testosterone, they argue, compels senior managers to make decisions intuitively, instinctively, quickly, and, unfortunately, disastrously. In this informative and enlightening book, Clancy and Krieg confront these “over-and-over again” marketers, who don’t have time to do it right the first time, but endless time and a company bankroll to do it wrong over and over again. The authors draw from their decades of consumer and business-to-business marketing experience to business-to-business marketing experience to describe the intuitive decision-making practices that permeate business today, and demonstrate how these practices lead to disappointing performance.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". This new and enlarged edition represents a radical revision. The entire text has been brought up to date and new material has been added on management audits, cost reduction methods, productivity schemes, environmental impacts, output budgeting and the role of costs in pricing. The structure of the Handbook, however, remains the same. Part One explains the nature of costs and the principles of cost control. Part Two reviews the most important approaches and techniques in the management of costs, while Part Three demonstrates how to apply these methods to the main management functions. Each chapter is followed by an annotated list of further reading, and the Handbook concludes with a Glossary of terms and definitions.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". The year 1946, for instance, was marked by repeated, costly strikes in one basic industry after another. Indeed, in a reaction against this thrust of power on the part of new, industry-wide unions, the Taft-Hartley Act was enacted in 1947. It marked a reversal of the trend started with the validation of the Wagner Act by the Supreme Court in 1937. For now trade unions, too, were under surveil lance and could be made subject to charges of unfair labor practices as only management had been under the Wagner Act. Other restrictions were placed upon them by the Federal law, and a number of states enacted even more stringent legislation in the form of so-called “right-to-work” laws.

At this writing, ten years later, it can safely be said that, whatever legisla tion may still be forthcoming, collective bargaining has nevertheless survived as a permanent institution. Hardly any responsible managements would be willing to say now, regardless of their feelings in the past, that they preferred to function without unions or that they could do so even if they so desired. Problems still continue, some of them serious in nature. Whereas in the first five or six years after the war it was repeated strikes, some of an emergency nature, that troubled the nation, now it is “creeping” inflation. Indeed, many observers think that the continuous inflationary trend can be traced in large part to the periodic wage settlements, including fringe benefits, entered into by large unions and large corporations which establish patterns for the econ omy as a whole. The debate goes on as to whether unions are the primary cause of the inflationary trend or whether it is caused by corporations when they translate wage increases into price increases which, it is charged, are greater than just the wage component. To this management replies, ‘Well, surely, prices must be greater than the amount of the wage increase because our wage increase creates a cycle which makes everything we buy cost more. It costs us many times more to replace plants and machinery we built before the inflationary cycle began, not to say anything about raw and semi-finished material’.

The truth of the matter is that problems will always be with us: this or that issue will continuously arise in the highly dynamic industrial environment that characterizes this nation. Collective bargaining does not in itself solve major economic and social problems. What it does provide is a procedure by means of which problems can be identified and handled.”

Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: 2nd edition. [First Edition: 1959] From the cover: “This is a new, revised and enlarged edition of a smaller work published in 1959, and appears at a time when there is a mounting interest in the role, powers and duties of trade unions in the British economy and in the standard of living of the working man.

The original work attracted a great deal of attention by its penetrating analysis of the role of the trade unions, and by its courage in advising them to ‘come to terms with the market economy, which is an essential feature of a free society’. This edition was quickly sold, and it was decided to prepare a new one, bringing the argument up to date and comparing British trade unions with unions in America.

A reviewer in Economica said of the first edition of this book and also of Unions in America by the same author, published by Princeton University: ‘Mr. Roberts writes very well… One wishes the two works could be combined together, for they would make a first-class study in comparative industrial relations and the positions of trade unions in the world’s two chief democracies’. This has now been done.”
