The book should be of value to systems analysts, systems programmers and systems engineers, although it should also be a good reference for management and newcomers to computing.

Apart from giving particular attention to the facilities available in the UK and the Post Office’s role in data communications, the book provides an insight to the facilities available internationally.”

The Illustrated Encyclopedia Of Commercial Aircraft by Editor-in-Chief Bill Gunston (£27.00)Publisher: Windward — 1980Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0711200602]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper and a small scuff to the upper panel. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs; Colour Drawings; Diagrams; Tables;

From the cover: “This book is a comprehensive account of all the major commercial aircraft, from the first jets like the Nene Viking and Jet Lancastrian, to possible futuristic designs like slew-winged airliners and hydrogen-fuelled aircraft. Also included are the wide-bodied giants of today, the Boeing 747 and the 11-86, together with supersonic types such as the Anglo-French Concorde and the Russian Tu-144. The latter was the first supersonic airliner to fly and enter service, even though its full-scale development began after that of Concorde.

Civil helicopters play a vital role in urban communications and link remote and difficult sites like oil rigs and timber camps. The wide range of general aviation aircraft complement these helicopters, since both are used for tasks like search and rescue, crop-spraying, air-ambulances, fire-fighting, aerial photography and as executive transports.

The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Commercial Aircraft contains lists of specifications, three-views, cutaways and colour illustrations, as well as the historical and mechanical details of the aircraft which are changing the face of the world.”

It is an invitation to think — to wonder, to question, to speculate, to reason, even to fantasize — in the eternal search for wisdom. To answer these extreme questions and many more between, Laura Tatham has obtained first-hand evidence from dozens of consultants and from as many clients, both satisfied and dissatisfied. This book is the result of her inquiries.

An impartial survey, The Efficiency Experts examines in detail what management consultants are, how they work and what they set out to accomplish. It suggests ways in which the businessman can make best use of consultants, and how he can assess whether or not a firm is likely to do a good job. A number of case histories describe both successful and unsuccessful consulting assignments.”

Roman Britain and Early England 55 B.C.-A.D. 871 by Peter Hunter Blair (£14.00)Publisher: Thomas Nelson & Sons — 1963Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper. Newspaper clipping folded and pasted in against the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps;

From the cover: “Roman Britain was part of a vast, powerful empire; Anglo-Saxon England was politically its own master. The difference is reflected in the written sources. For Roman Britain they are small in bulk, recording matters that primarily concerned not Britain but the empire — its rulers, its military governors and its soldiers. For Anglo-Saxon England, no longer subject to any outside governmental control, they are larger in quantity and more richly varied. Because of this difference in quantity as well as quality, Mr Hunter Blair has turned to other sources of evidence and shown that a rounded narrative of both the Romano-British and Anglo-Saxon periods is possible.

Excavation and aerial photography have won a great deal of new evidence during the last thirty years, and it is chiefly within an archaeological context that the earlier part of this volume rests. Despite the paucity of eye-witness account, the author has presented a comprehensive, fascinating study not only of the military vicissitudes of the Roman occupation but also of provincial government, town and country life, communications and religious beliefs. The picture is reconstructed very largely from inscriptions — a centurion’s tombstone, altars dedicated to Neptune and Ocean by members of a legion anxious to placate the deities of river floods and tides… these are the contemporary, authoritative evidence upon which this absorbing narrative is based.

The later chapters emphasise the interdependence of archaeological and literary evidence in a survey of tie nature of Anglo-Saxon society. The splendid treasure unearthed at Sutton Hoo in 1939 illuminates that great monument of the Anglo-Saxon age, the poem Beowulf, as does the recently excavated site of a royal palace at Old Yeavering. Place-names, too, tell us something about old pagan practices and throw light upon innumerable aspects of life in Anglo-Saxon England.”

Internally bright and clean.Description: Judged by the highest standards, the British have a genius to be proud of, whether in science, technology or industrial enterprise, in institutions such as government, administration, education and law, or in communications or sport. Britain has more Science Nobel Prize-winners per head of population than any other country. Of world languages English is the most widely spoken, and the world’s greatest literature is English. And in an era of growing violence and intolerance Britain is still arguably the most civilized country in the world to live in. In Milton’s words: ‘Let not England forget her precedence of teaching nations how to live.’ The authors present the facts in this fascinating and heartening book. They beat no jingoistic drums. [ISBN: 0684855550]Condition: Near Fine - in Very Good DJ. Very slightly ruffled edges of DJ.Description: How Great Results Come from Uncommon Sense. From the flap: “The authors trace the high rate of business failure back to bad marketing strategy, and the even worse implementation of that strategy. Excess testosterone, they argue, compels senior managers to make decisions intuitively, instinctively, quickly, and, unfortunately, disastrously. In this informative and enlightening book, Clancy and Krieg confront these “over-and-over again” marketers, who don’t have time to do it right the first time, but endless time and a company bankroll to do it wrong over and over again. The authors draw from their decades of consumer and business-to-business marketing experience to business-to-business marketing experience to describe the intuitive decision-making practices that permeate business today, and demonstrate how these practices lead to disappointing performance.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". Pilot Error: Anatomies of Aircraft Accidents by The Editors of Flying Magazine (£13.00)Publisher: Van Nostrand Reinhold Company — 1977Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0442224516]Condition: Good+ — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper with the price clipped. Edges of the text block heavily tanned. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: 2nd impression. [First Edition: 1977]

From the cover: “A turn not taken, a landmark not seen, a decision not made, or a warning not heeded — small things such as these are often the stuff of aviation accidents. However many hours of experience he or she may have, however many licenses and ratings, however much respected by other pilots, there can come a time when a wrong move will be made, and the pilot perhaps posthumously — will be held responsible for, a crash caused by pilot error.

In these transcripts of actual transmissions between pilots and controllers just prior to crashes one can see the grim scenario of mistakes leading to more mistakes. One pilot casually flies into known bad weather and bit by bit eliminates his options for escape. Another becomes lost over the Caribbean and wanders helplessly as controllers try to help her. Another determines that he will land at a socked-in airport regardless of the danger.

These incidents carry vital lessons to pilots of all degrees of experience and skill. The reader often discovers that he has at times blundered as one of the pilots does in this book and is grateful for the warning.

Accompanied by expert analyses of the errors and how to avoid them, these dialogues make for gripping reading, which is partly why “Pilot Error” has long been one of the most popular features of Flying magazine. Here are some of the most dramatic and instructive articles in that series.”

The Fight For the Channel Ports: Calais to Brest 1940: A Study in Confusion by Michael Glover (£13.00)Publisher: Leo Cooper in association with Secker and Warburg — 1985Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0436182106]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently faded at the spine of the dust wrapper otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps; Tables; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “In the summer of 1940 all British attention was focused on the Deliverance of Dunkirk as the Expeditionary Force, its communications cut, fought its way back to the coast. But since the War historians have given little thought to the British troops, including the country’s only armoured division, who were trapped in France outside the Dunkirk perimeter. The Royal Navy eventually evacuated 144,171 men but more than 20,000 failed to return. This is the dramatic story of the last actions fought by the abandoned BEF troops who struggled down the Channel coast, selling their lives dearly in a desperate attempt to reach safety. A few incidents have been told before — the defence of Calais by the Greenjackets; the trapping of the Highland Division at St. Valery: yet the Battle Honours Amiens 1940 and Abbeville are as little known as they are rare, and Doullens was not rated as an Honour despite the handsome tribute paid by the enemy to the ill-armed, undertrained Territorials (12th Eastern Division) who defended it. Now their ordeal is told in full. This is a story of muddle and confusion redeemed only by the bravery of the fighting troops. A story in which all military actions were tempered by political considerations and in which Government policy demanded a show of solidarity with France, in the hope that the powerful French navy would continue to fight on the Allied side. Thus the abandoned BEF were beset with order and counter-order and, as a result of the lack of unified command, thousands of men were lost and vast amounts of desperately needed stores and equipment had to be destroyed or left to the enemy. It was a classic example of the way in which war should not be waged.”

Space: The Story of Man's Greatest Feat of Exploration by Patrick Moore (£12.50)Publisher: Lutterworth Press — 1968Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Dust wrapper somewhat ruffled, with some small nicks and tears, some tape-reinforced to the reverse, with the laminate lifting at the top edge. Previous owners inscription to the last blank and the rear flap of the dust wrapper. Text complete, clean and tight but slightly musty.Description: Illustrated with colour photographs. From the cover: “On October 4, 1957, Sputnik I soared into orbit, speeding round the Earth and transmitting signals to radio stations on every continent. This was the start of the Space Age. Since that historic day man has progressed so rapidly into space that he has constantly replaced science fiction with science fact. Gagarin’s first space flight, the first Russian Mars probe, the Venus probes, the photographs of the far side of the Moon, etc., are now taken so much for granted that the world no longer wonders if man will reach the Moon and the planets, but when.

In this book Patrick Moore tells the full story of space exploration from the very earliest theories to the recent lunar landings and inter-planetary probes. He describes how the Greek philosophers recorded the first serious thoughts about space travel, how the Arab astronomers were the first to appreciate that the earth’s atmosphere thins out with increasing height above the ground, and how the very first science fiction story — Lucian’s 1 History (the story of a Moon-Voyage) was written as long ago as a.d. 150. He traces the history of the rocket over the centuries, describing its military uses, its development by the Germans at Peene-münde into the deadly V2 rocket and its evolution into Vanguard, the first successful American space probe, in 1958.

In the later chapters, which form the main body of the book, the author covers the exploratory space experiments in America and Russia immediately after the war, the launching of the sputniks and other satellites, and the remarkable events of recent years — the first American orbital flight, the space meetings and the space walks, the first soft landing on the Moon and the close-range photographs of Mars obtained from Mariner 4. He concludes with a thought-provoking chapter on exploring the solar system and on the fascinating possibilities of interstellar flight.

Patrick Moore, well known for his BBC television series on astronomy, ‘The Sky At Night’, is the author of many books on astronomy. Space is undoubtedly his major book to date. It is an absorbing, entertaining and brilliantly written account of Man’s greatest feat of exploration. It is illustrated with over 300 magnificent illustrations including 70 photographs in full-colour, 57 detailed drawings by David Hardy, and many other diagrams and photographs in black-and-white and colour.”

English Country Life, 1780-1830 by E. W. Bovill (£12.00)Publisher: London, New York & Toronto: Oxford University Press — 1962Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good+ — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and the top corners of the boards with commensurate wear to the dust wrapper. Leans a little. Price Clipped. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Contains: Black & white plates;

From the cover: “This book, by the author of The England of Nimrod and Surtees 1815-1854, has a slightly earlier starting point and perhaps a more general appeal. There was no more formative period than this in the history of English country life. In agriculture and transport every civilized country modelled itself on the new methods and discoveries of British farmers and engineers. The domestic influences of these changes were profound. They gave the landscape its present form and country life a pattern which altered little for a hundred years, and which still governs the way of life of many a countryman. The period has been closely studied by social historians, but chiefly in the wider context of the Industrial Revolution. The author’s purpose here is to present studies of certain aspects of country life which seem to him to merit closer attention than they have so far received. Thus, in chapters on, among other things, enclosure and consequent hardships, the squires, servants, travelling and the state of the roads, guns, poaching, and the coming of the railway, a mosaic of related studies is built up to give in broad outline a vivid and fascinating picture of English country life between 1780 and 1830. Quotation both from contemporary fiction and from magazines, memoirs, letters, and newspapers, by Cobbett, John Byng, William Howitt, Mary Mitford, Surtees, Dickens and others, brings very close the feel of many aspects of country life at that time.”

No Time to Die by Liz Tilberis (£11.50)Publisher: Weidenfeld & Nicolson — 1998Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0297842366]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper slightly ruffled at the tail of the spine otherwise a very well presented copy.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “In 1993, Liz Tilberis seemed to have it all. She was a working mother with a family who adored her. As editor-in-chief of Harper’s Bazaar, she was at the heart of the glamorous world of international fashion, and was widely recognized as one of the most powerful people in the industry. That year she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. By the time she was nineteen she had been expelled from one art school and was involved in a passionate relationship with a teacher at another (an affair which led to marriage). At the age of twenty-one, she landed a job at British Vogue, her entree to one of the world’s most glamorous magazines. Tilberis worked at Vogue for twenty-two years, rising from unpaid intern to editor-in-chief in a period that saw dramatic changes in both fashion and society. Through the same period, Tilberis also weathered personal trials — told she was infertile, she underwent years of fertility treatments before she and her husband Andrew adopted their two sons. But Tilberis’s true career triumph came when she was hired to head Vogue’s arch-rival, Harper’s Bazaar. She and her family moved from London to New York and into the fashion ‘big time’, where Tilberis was charged with revitalizing the jewel in the crown of the Hearst publishing empire. Her revamped Bazaar electrified the fashion world and brought a new elegance to fashion publishing: designers’ visions were brought to life in photo spreads conceived as works of art. In the midst of achieving this creative coup, Tilberis underwent major surgery and her first round of chemotherapy. The therapy succeeded, but the cancer eventually recurred. This time, treatment involved an excruciating and life-threatening bone marrow transplant. Although drained physically and emotionally, Tilberis conducted editorial meetings from her hospital bed. This inspiring memoir offers a no-holds-barred look inside the world of fashion magazines, and a candid account of a battle with a debilitating illness.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". 304 pages.
