Gently bruised at the head of the spine and the top corners of the boards with commensurate wear to the dust wrapper, a little fraying to the spine ends. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “This well-illustrated collector’s guide covers a wide range of nautical decorative arts and navigational instruments. The book spans the period from the sixteenth century to the present day with an emphasis on the golden age of production between 1800 and 1940. These more modern pieces are readily found in specialist shops and auctions and are therefore more affordable than earlier and rarer pieces.

The book is divided into eight chapters, covering ship models, navigational instruments, ship fixtures and fittings, marine arts and crafts, ocean liner artefacts and ship portrait painting.

A concluding chapter lists public and private collections where marine art can be seen and provides information on its purchase internationally. There is also practical advice on the restoration of these artefacts.

A much needed publication, this book will be of interest not only to collectors but to all those connected with ships and the sea.”

The Art of Flowers by Laurence Buffet-Challié (£24.50)Publisher: Weidenfeld & Nicolson — 1969Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper pleasant overall but has two short closed tears to the top edge, one at the head of the spine and the other at the head of the upper panel. Text complete, clean and tight. Box a little faded and marked but more than acceptable.Description: 41 colour plates. 87 black and white illustrations. 78 explanatory diagrams. From the cover: “The flower as a decorative object is an integral part of the home and in recent times has become an important element in the art of interior design. Here, for the first time, the national styles of Germany, England, France, Italy and Scandinavia have been compared, each influenced by the particular climate, way of life, and artistic history of their country. The book begins with the study of basic forms and techniques; later the amateur is taught how to exploit the natural beauty of flowers, how to see colours and arrange a design which will blend in with its setting. The flower arrangements are shown simply and clearly; explanatory diagrams of their construction appear next to the magnificent colour plates or black and white illustrations, most of which have been especially photographed for this book. The author, a specialist in the art of decoration, writes in collaboration with Jacques Bedat, an eminent florist, who created many of the flower arrangements reproduced, and whose creative fantasy is shown in his arrangements for the Rothschilds, the Duchess of Windsor, Renault, Citroen and many others. The Art of Flowers is dedicated to the flower-lover, whether the source of his pleasure is growing, arranging or just looking at flowers.”Notes: Illustrated by Jacques Bedat. Size: 9¾" x 10¼". Arabian Nights: The Book of a Thousand Nights and a Night Selected by Antony Atha from the Illustrated Benares Edition by Richard F. Burton (£14.00)Publisher: London: Bracken Books — 1985Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0946495246]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the spine ends and corners with commensurate wear to the dust wrapper. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Drawings [16];

From the cover: “To celebrate the centenary of the publication of the first volume of Sir Richard Burton’s famous 17 volume translation of the Arabian Nights in 1885, this edition is the first of two volumes collecting together over 70 of the best known tales.

The origins of the Arabian Nights are lost in antiquity. First translated into a European language by the Frenchman Antoine Galland in the 18th century, many of the characters in the stories have become household names. Versions of Aladdin and his Lamp and Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves appear in countless children’s books and are performed as pantomimes every Christmas, and the same is true of many others. But the simple fairytale element of the Arabian Nights can be exaggerated. As Burton himself said ‘viewed as a whole they are a drama of Eastern life, and a Dance of Death made sublime by faith and the highest emotions, by the certainty of expiation and the fullness of atoning equity. They form a phantasmagoria in which angels and archangels, devils and goblins, men of air, of fire, of water, naturally mingle with men of earth… All the splendour and squalor, the beauty and baseness, the glamour and grotesqueness… of Oriental life are here: it pictures the three great Arab passions, love, war and fancy; and still more, by adding Fiction to Fact the genius of the storyteller quickens the dry bones of history and revives the dead past. Truly they form one of the monuments of world literature.

To preserve the chronology of the original the stories in this edition are printed virtually in the order in which they first appeared. This first volume therefore contains that classic romp The Porter and the Three Ladies of Baghdad, the famous Hunchback’s Tale, the marvellous Voyages of Sindbad the Sailor, and that great favourite Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves. In the second volume it is planned to include all the stories made famous by Galland — in particular Aladdin and his Lamp — which came in the seven Supplemental volumes in the original translation.

Throughout, the original unexpurgated version privately printed by the Burton Club has been used. This translation is marked by the extraordinary resource and felicity of expression that Burton commanded and for the last hundred years has remained the benchmark against which all other translations are measured. The anthropological notes embrace a wide field of erotic reference and abound in valuable observations based on Burton’s lifelong study and observation of the peoples of the East.

This commemorative centenary issue is illustrated with a selection of the paintings of Albert Letchford commissioned by the publisher H. S. Nichols for the first library edition. Letchford was a close friend of Sir Richard and Lady Burton, and one to whom, on the night of his death, Sir Richard presented his personal copy of The Thousand Nights and a Night. It seems therefore only fitting that these illustrations should illuminate the pages of a work which has done so much to bring to life ‘the splendour and squalor, the beauty and baseness, the glamour and grotesqueness’ of Oriental life.”

Infantilia: The Archaeology of the Nursery by Arnold Haskell & Min Lewis (£12.50)Publisher: London: Dennis Dobson — 1971Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Signed by the Author.[ISBN: 0234776781]Condition: Very Good — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with heavier tanning to the spine. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Signed by the author on the title page — unverified and reflected as such in the lack of premium. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Drawings; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “It is rare to find material assembled for the first time between the covers of a book that deals with objects so familiar that we are no longer aware of them. Infantilia is such a book. It tells in drawings and text the history of perambulators, feeding bottles and rattles in a manner that is of interest to the collector of increasingly rare and often beautiful objects, to the sociologist and to the pram-pushing mum and dad in the street.

It is amazing that no such study has previously appeared and its experienced authors have made it lively, personal and scholarly with illustrations of 125 different objects.

When was the first pram made? Can you date a vintage pram? Did you realise that they were collector’s pieces? Would you recognise a blue and white willow pattern feeding bottle of 150 years ago when even the pottery that made it has no record? Did you know that the feeding bottle has a 4,000-year-old history? In no book on silver is there a section on rattles… did you realise that they were made by the finest craftsmen of the day and that they are the oldest toys in the world?

This book opens up a new field of study, the archaeology of the nursery, a fascination for anyone who has ever been pushed in a pram.”

Thomas Hope 1769-1831 and The Neo-classical Idea by David Watkin (£11.50)Publisher: London: John Murray — 1968Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Edges of the text block lightly spotted with a stain to the edges of the last few edges. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Contains: Black & white photographs; Black & white drawings; Appendices [5]; Plans;

From the cover: “Thomas Hope, 1769-1831, eccentric offspring of a Dutch banking family, employed his wealth and taste to impress on Regency society the principles of Neo-Classicism. While he invested in Old Masters, antique statuary and vases, he also patronised such contemporary artists as Flaxman, Thorvaldsen, Haydon and Benjamin West; and he anticipated William Morris by training craftsmen to make durable furniture from his own Greek and Egyptian designs. His London mansion was something between a djinn’s fabrication and a museum — filled at night with fashionable routs, by day with ticket-holding members of the public. His country place in Surrey was a model of all that an enlightened gentleman’s estate should be.

Although Hope prescribed classical austerity for others, he himself simultaneously flirted with oriental splendour and the Picturesque. He wrote a romantic novel called Anastasius, had himself and his wife painted in Turkish costumes, and backed his Greek vases with seraglio draperies. In this he expressed the yearning of his age to have every beauty, every strangeness, all at once; and being a man of character as well as feeling, he carried off his grand ideas superbly.

In Thomas Hope Dr Watkin has found a subject hitherto unknown except to cognoscenti, and, with much new material, has created round him a work rich in social and aesthetic history, full of delights for the discerning reader of today. His book, with its wealth of illustrations, many of which are published for the first time, is a highly instructive and entertaining picture of a past age. It also has significance now, bewildered as we are in much the same way by the present clamour of conflicting values.”

From the cover: “Collecting is a passion that can become a way of life. The lure of the chase, the search for the elusive treasure, the fascination of knowing almost, but not quite, everything about some out-of-the-ordinary subject are what makes a collector’s adrenalin surge.

Collectors thrive most of all on the teasing certainty that fortunes can be made out of their hobbies and that around the next corner they could find the one thing that will make their collection complete and unique.

This book contains the stories of many fascinating and successful collectors. They are men and women of all ages and from all walks of life who have been bitten by the collecting bug. Their specialities range from old bank notes to cigarette lighters, from dolls to picture postcards.

From their own experience they give first hand tips on collecting including how to start, where to go and, most interesting of all for the would be collector, what to start specialising in now so that your hobby can be turned into money. The astute collector picks an area of the market that is unexploited and develops it. Two young men who tell their collecting story in the book introduced the words ‘street jewellery’ to the Oxford English Dictionary because that was what they called the enamel signs, manhole covers and street direction boards which they began to collect only a few years ago. Street jewellery is now a large and thriving area for other collectors.

Everything and anything can be collected from 18th century prints to today’s throwaway beer cans. In this book you learn how to build up your collection and also how to add an unexpected pleasure to your life for collecting can not only be a cure for boredom and the blues but it carries with it the very real possibility of turning a modest outlay of money into a considerable nest egg.

The sky is the limit for the successful collector. Read how it can be done..”

Country Life Book of Antique Maps: An Introduction to the History of Maps and How to Appreciate Them by Jonathan Potter (£10.50)Publisher: Mappamundi — 1988Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0600556263]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and top corners with the expected associated abrasion to the dust wrapper. Description: Illustrated with photographs, in colour & black and white. From the cover: “It is possible that long before Man could communicate through the written word, he was making primitive maps from clay or bits of bark, probably to indicate nothing more than good places to hunt. As the sea became important for food and transport so charts were produced on shells and bones to indicate sheltered coves, fishing grounds, hidden rocks or safe routes. But it was not until the 16th century that maps evolved into the intricate documents we know today.

The beginning of the 1500s heralded the age when cartographers not only recorded geographical boundaries, but introduced a style which, with their historical content, made maps beautiful and irresistible works of art. It is from this time to the 1850s that this book concerns itself — the age of the mapmaker as scientist and artist.

Country Life Book of Antique Maps is a thorough introduction to the history of antique maps and how to collect and enjoy them, written by one of the world’s leading antique map dealers..”

Macdonald Guide to Buying Antique Silver & Sheffield Plate by Rachael Feild (£10.50)Publisher: Macdonald Orbis — 1988Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0356123820]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Black & White Drawings;

From the cover: “Collecting antique English silver is a pleasure that need by no means be confined to the rich, yet many people shy away from buying old pieces and opt for something modern, just to be on the safe side. The terminology used by dealers seems too mysterious, the choice overwhelmingly wide, the decisions too hard. How rewarding it can be, however, with a slowly growing knowledge of the subject, to delve into the rich history, to recognise the changing styles, and to appreciate with increasing delight the use and display of old English silver in your own home.

If sterling silver bites too deep into a slim budget, it can be highly enjoyable to explore the possibilities of old Sheffield plate, and to acquire a few pieces that will grace a table with all the appearance of its more expensive cousin.

The Macdonald Guide to Buying Antique Silver and Sheffield Plate provides all the essential information the buyer needs — quickly, clearly and simply. It looks in detail at forty-eight classic items likely to be encountered in shops or salerooms — ranging from large, important pieces originally made to demonstrate the wealth and power of their owners, down to the smallest, most affordable silver made to use and enjoy: cutlery, cruets, card cases, vesta cases and all the charming little objects that were taken for granted by earlier generations.”

Mercantile Law by Stevens (£10.50)Publisher: The School Of Accountancy, Secretaryship, Banking, and Insurance — 1925Binding: Hardback Condition: Good+. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank.Description: From the introduction: “This edition has been brought up to date in the usual-way. Among the important recent decisions referred to are Joachimson v. Swiss Bank Corporation, and Tournier v. National Provincial Bank, which both bear upon the relation between banker and customer. It has also been thought desirable to deal more fully with other subjects, such as covenants in restraint of trade, the position of the collecting banker, and arbitrations. Not many statutory changes in the law called for special notice, but the main provisions of the Carriage of Goods by Sea Act, 1924, which are likely to affect commercial transactions to a considerable extent, have been summarised.”Notes: Foreword or introduction by Herbert Jacobs.
