Honest George Monck by J. D. [John David] Griffith Davies (£153.00)Publisher: John Lane The Bodley Head — 1936Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with many short nicks and chips. Leans slightly. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank. Pages lightly age-tanned. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black and White Photographs;

From the cover: “A SIMPLE soldier of fortune, Monck became one of the foremost captains of his age. Yet there was nothing of the sabre-rattling militarist about him. His pacification of the Highlands of Scotland, achieved with surprisingly little bloodshed, marked him down as a first-rate administrator. As a sailor, too, he was Blake’s equal; and to him even more than to Blake belongs the credit of having removed the Dutch naval menace. But surpassing these, the crowning glory of Monck’s work for England was the Stuart Restoration in 1660.

However, there is more in this book than a record of Monck’s political and military work. There is a clearly-cut picture of the man himself — the soldier who never asked his men to do that which he was afraid to do himself; the sailor who strove to better conditions on the lower deck; the indulgent husband and father; the faithful friend; and always the true patriot. All these aspects of Monck’s life are delightfully brought out by Mr. Davies. And perhaps for the first time he enables both students of history and general readers to understand and appreciate one of England’s greatest sons.”

Vodka on Ice: A Year with the Russians in Antarctica by Charles Swithinbank (£38.00)Publisher: The Book Guild — 2002Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1857766466]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: Contains a glossary of terms. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “No stranger to the Antarctic, Charles Swithinbank is the only Briton to have served with the Soviet Antarctic Expedition. From 1963 to 1965 he lived and worked without a break at Russian stations in the far south. The Cold War was in full swing and many of his colleagues assumed that he had been sent to spy on them. Yet gradually the barriers were broken down and he encountered many a colourful character, gaining a fascinating insight into the lives of his Soviet comrades. Several had harrowing tales to tell. One had been a dive-bomber pilot during the war. Another had steel ribs as a legacy of the battle of Stalingrad, and had lost part of a leg during the siege of Leningrad. The doctor had been severely wounded in Stalingrad before recovering to hound the German army westwards through the Baltic states. Some of the younger Russians had spent the war in Siberia, working on state farms. In the course of his stay the author visited the coldest place on Earth, drove a giant tractor, taught English, attended Communist Party meetings and did his share of the chores. He describes feasts and everyday fare, borsch and shchi and fish buns.”

The Late, Great Pennsylvania Station by Lorraine Diehl (£33.00)Publisher: The Stephen Greene Press (Vermont) — 1987Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0828906033]Condition: Very Good. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Black & White Drawings;

From the cover: “New York City’s Pennsylvania Station, conceived as a symbol of the wealth and power of America’s mightiest railroad, became a national monument during its short life. This history of the famous depot is not only a story of the superb achievement of architect Charles Pollen Me Kin, but also a tale of human struggle and of a complex and dangerous engineering triumph. Lorraine Diehl’s lively, authoritative text, together with vintage photographs and drawings, recaptures the classical grandeur of the building and the drama and turbulence of its times — from the sunny pre — World War I era through 1963, when it was destroyed in the appalling act of civic vandalism that spurred the modern Landmark Preservation movement.”

Great Contemporaries by Winston S. Churchill (£24.00)Publisher: W. W. Norton & Co. — 1991Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0393029417]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper with a couple of very small nicks to the foot of the upper panel. A nice copy overall. Description: First U. S. Edition. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles;

From the cover: “Few people have been privileged to meet, at such an early age, as many famous men as did Winston Churchill. These twenty-five biographical essays are the result of constant — even day-today — contact with the most influential leaders and celebrities of the day, including George Bernard Shaw, Hindenberg, Lawrence of Arabia, Hitler, Trotsky, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and Clemenceau, among others.

Of Charles Stewart Parnell, the great Irish statesman undone by scandal, he writes: “He never faltered. He dedicated himself to a single goal, the goal of Ireland a nation, and he pursued it unswervingly until a rose thrown across his path opened a new world, the world of love”. Of the ex-Kaiser William II, he writes: “All he wished was to feel like Napoleon and be like him, without having had to fight his battles… If you are the summit of a volcano, the least you can do is smoke”.

Many of the figures so tellingly rendered in these sketches are revered by the author, representing the ethics and attitudes he holds in highest esteem. But it is when Churchill voices a reservation about the policies or character of one of his contemporaries that the reader sees most clearly into the soul of the age, and into the mind of the author himself just before he moves onto the centre stage of world history.”

A Day of Battle: Mars-la-Tour, 16 August 1870 by David Ascoli (£21.00)Publisher: London: Harrap — 1987Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0245542507]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper. Price Clipped. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps;

From the cover: “Between dawn and dusk on Tuesday, 16 August 1870, a largely forgotten but profoundly important battle was fought on the rolling plateau a few miles to the west of Metz in Lorraine. There the French Army of the Rhine, falling back incautiously towards Verdun, was intercepted by advance elements of the German Second Army.

What followed, throughout that sunburnt summer’s day, was an extraordinary encounter in which was distilled, as in few other battles, the whole essence of war: desperate courage and dreadful error; brilliant bluff and moral cowardice; human frailty and superhuman endurance. As night fell both sides rested on their blood-stained laurels. Both claimed victory. Neither had immediate cause to celebrate.

But the battle of Mars-la-Tour was to change the face of Europe. Two weeks later at Sedan, Emperor Louis Napoleon Bonaparte surrendered his Army of Chalons to King William of Prussia, and on 28 October Marshal Bazaine capitulated the Army of the Rhine to Prince Frederick Charles in Metz. On 18 January, 1871, King William was elected the first Emperor of a united Germany. And who shall say what sombre results were to flow for future generations from that watershed of history?

To this dramatic ‘day of battle’, and to its aftermath, David Ascoli has brought his remarkable narrative skills and his sharp sense of irony and compassion so widely praised in his classic account of the Old Contemptibles, The Mons Star. He has researched deeply in both French and German sources and has spent many days on the battlefield of Mars-la-Tour. His book is illustrated with a wealth of maps and plans and with his own photographs of the critical areas of the fighting.

A Day of Battle is an important, unusual, and immensely readable contribution to the history of our times.”

Another Republic: 17 European and South American Writers by Edited by Charles Simic & Mark Strand (£19.50)Publisher: Ecco Press — 1976Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0912946288]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Top edge of the text block tanned with light, occasional spotting to the leading edge. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank with a bookplate to the pastedown.Description: From the cover: “Another Republic is a gathering of the best European and South American poets and fabulists superbly trans lated by outstanding British and American writers. Ranging from such acknowledged masters as Henri Michaux and Francis Ponge to such unjustly neglected figures as Johannes Bobrowski and Fernando Pessoa, the anthology is audacious, inclusive, and unlike any other. The selections are ample enough to give the reader a clear idea of each poet’s vision and a comprehensive notion of what con temporary poetry is. Charles Simic and Mark Strand, two of America’s finest poets, have chosen wisely the writers who have most influenced the new generation of American poets, and have avoided making the predictable choices of over-anthologized poets whose reputations, the editors believe, are disproportionate to their influence.

By providing the reader with the foreign sources of what is most vital in American literature today, Simic and Strand have done an invaluable job. This is an anthology in which discoveries will be made, in which there are poems and fables that will astonish and delight. It is also an anthology which, because of its clearly polemical nature, will stimulate controversy. Another Republic will add richly to the fabric of ideas.”

Illustrated with B&W photographs. From the cover: “This superb work traces the early recruitment of Gorkhas into the East India Company’s Bengal Army and is based on sound research and documentary evidence, a significant par of which has so far been unpublished. The work centres on the friendship of two Highland Scots: David Ochterlony, an army officer with a penchant for diplomacy, and William Fraser, a civil servant with a hankering for military command. Both were involved in the Anglo-Nepal war of 1814- 1816. Ochterlony, commanding an army division in the Cis-Sutlej Hills, employed the skills of Gorkhas and other hillmen captured from the Nepalese Army. Impressed by their military discipline and efficiency, he took the opportunity of his enforced capitulation of the Nepalese Western Army at Malaun in 1815 to enlist some 4700, of whom perhaps 1500 were Gorkhas, into the Bengal Army.”Notes: Foreword or introduction by Major General D. A Moment Towards the End of the Play by Timothy West (£18.00)Publisher: Nick Hern — 2001Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Signed by the Author.[ISBN: 1854596195]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: 2nd (corrected) printing. [First Published: 2001] Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Signed by the author on the title page — unverified and reflected as such in the lack of premium.

From the cover: “The actor Timothy West is held in high regard and great affection. He has played roles as diverse as Edward VII and Thomas Beecham, Falstaff and Uncle Vanya, Stalin and Churchill — and he became a household name in the TV series Brass. Now in his sixties, he has written his autobiography. In it he emerges as a born writer, a brilliant raconteur and a man deeply concerned about the health of his profession.

The account of his early years, replete with delightful stories, reads like a map of a now vanished landscape: box-office at Frinton, assistant stage manager at Newquay, weekly rep at Hull, and a two-year contract at Salisbury -while coping with a manic depressive first wife and their small child.

Then begins the steady climb towards the West End and film and television. He was in Abelard and Heloise with (a naked) Diana Rigg. He was in Exiles directed by Harold Pinter (1970). He joined the BBC Drama Repertory Company and the Royal Shakespeare Company. He joined Charles Marowitz at his experimental Open Space. And he joined Prospect Theatre Company and stayed with them from 1966-1981, touring incessantly, playing many of the plum Shakespearean roles and ending up running their seasons at the London Old Vie, whose low point was his failure to prevent Peter O’Toole notoriously self-destructing as Macbeth. Meanwhile Tim had met and married Prunella Scales and had two more children, Joe and Sam (now the actor, Samuel West).

Since then he has led the life of a busy freelance actor and director mixing stage and screen, radio and talking books, going wherever there is congenial work, occasionally with Prunella and recently with Sam (they played Falstaff and Prince Hal together in 1998).

But as he tells it, it all seems to happen a bit by accident, a bit by surprise. The modesty is engaging. The humour is irresistible…”

Price Clipped. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “George Bishop, so long known in the worlds of the theatre and of letters that he may be regarded as a doyen of Fleet Street, has always been interested in others more than in himself. My Betters is therefore a happy, if modest, title for his autobiographical story of the people he has met.

His long span as commentator and critic gives him unequalled experience and authority — as an amateur he acted with Edith Evans before she went on the professional stage; he edited The Era, the “actors’ bible”; was a special correspondent on both The Observer and The Sunday Times, and for the past twenty-five years has been on the staff of The Daily Telegraph, for twenty of those years its Literary Editor.

His memories are as wide and as varied as the world of entertainment itself. They range from a visit to Sibelius in Finland to a shopping expedition in the Strand with all four Marx Brothers, from a tea party with King George V and Queen Mary to a long talk with Charles Chaplin.

George Bishop is the unknown character named Deacon in George Moore’s Conversations in Ebury Street. According to Mr. Moore he was too young to be a Bishop and so he demoted him to the rank of Deacon: as such he takes his place in that brilliant war of words. My Betters contains some remembered conversations in that room in Ebury Street, including one which George Bishop had with the great men a few days before his death.

G.B.S., the Meynells, James Agate, Marie Tempest — these are but a few of the great personalities so intimately drawn and affectionately presented by this shrewd and kindly man in the charming revue he calls My Betters.”

Operation Northwind: The Unknown Battle of the Bulge by Charles Whiting (£18.00)Publisher: Leo Cooper — 1986Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0436570947]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and the top corners of the boards with commensurate wear to the dust wrapper. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps;

From the cover: “Everyone has heard of the ‘Battle of the Bulge’, the last great German surprise attack into the Belgian Ardennes in December ‘44. But who knows anything about that ‘second’ Battle of the Bulge, which cost the Americans and their French Allies nearly as many casualties and almost caused a breakdown in the alliance?

This was Operation Northwind, planned by the Führer himself, which hurled eight German divisions, three of them SS, against the thinly held American line in the Alsace-Lorraine region. Although the US High Command was forewarned by ‘Ultra’ from Bletchley, the German pressure was just too much. The Americans were forced to retreat. For the first time during the campaign in the West, Eisenhower ordered his troops to give up ground they had bought with their blood.

He commanded that Strasbourg, which held a special place in both French and German hearts, should be evacuated. De Gaulle protested. He would order his own French troops to take over the city and defend it. Eisenhower threatened to cut off his ammunition and supplies. De Gaulle countered. For a few days that January, 1945, while American troops fought for their lives in the snowbound hills of Alsace-Lorraine, it looked as if the Franco-American Alliance might be broken apart and France thrown into something akin to revolution. Finally Winston Churchill patched up the quarrel and the battle could continue.

Eventually the Alliance beat the Germans, but the cost was high in young men’s lives, both French and American.

Operation Northwind, quick-moving, action-packed, seen through the eyes of the men who were ‘at the sharp end’, fills a major gap in the history of World War II. It tells the story of an unknown battle, one which could — and did — change the course of European history…”

Association Football in Victorian England: A History of the Game from 1863 to 1900 by Philip Gibbons (£17.00)Publisher: Leicestershire: Upfront Publishing — 2002Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 1844260356]Condition: Very Good. Description: 2nd printing. [First Published: Minverva Press, 2001] Illustrated by way of: Appendices [4]; Black & White Photographs; Tables;

From the cover: “Prior to the 1870s, Association Football tended to be enjoyed as a form of exercise at public schools or a game between friends in a local park. However, with the administrative skills of the likes of Charles Alcock, Francis Marindin, Arthur Kinnaird and William McGregor, the game grew to such an extent that it became an important part in the lives of both players and spectators as the century reached its end.

The history of the early clubs, international games, as well as the growth of the professional clubs, are all encompassed in this book, including the likes of Aston Villa, Manchester United and Liverpool, when they started out as struggling little clubs.”
