Galatea by Philip Pullman (£88.00)Publisher: Victor Gollancz — 1978Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0575024984]Condition: Good+ - in Good+ DJ. Edges of DJ somewhat ruffled, a little tanned, with a ½" closed tear to the bottom corner of the upper panel. Heavily bruised at the head, tail and corners of the boards. First few pages slightly dog-eared at the top corners.Description: The authors 2nd novel. From the cover: “‘Everything what it seems’ is the quotation that stands at the head of this novel; and Galatea both seems and is the story of a man who loves his wife, and who goes to look for her when she disappears. What Martin Browning cannot know, however, is that his search for the elusive Catherine will lead him first to Valencia and ultimately into the wilds of South America; that it will take him into the company of rich people and poor, zombies, businessmen, cyclists, dogs, electric whores, an astrologer doubling as a werewolf and a deranged midget who is also a magistrate, as well as unreal people of various kinds; or that at its end, in the remote snow-filled Anderson Valley, he will learn from the clean-smelling angelic messenger perhaps sent to him by his wife that it is no bad thing to be unreal.”Notes: Jacket designed by Linda Garland. Size: 8" x 5¼". Green boards with Gilt titling to the Spine. 287 pages. The Six Wives of Henry VIII by Antonia Fraser (£21.00)Publisher: Weidenfeld & Nicolson — 1992Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Signed by the Author.[ISBN: 0297812424]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper with a light pull to the foot of the upper panel. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Signed by the author on the first blank — unverified (a cursory search suggests authenticity) and reflected as such in the lack of premium.

From the cover: “Divorced, beheaded, died; divorced, beheaded, survived. So the six wives of Henry VIII — Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anna of Cleves, Katherine Howard and Catherine Parr -have become defined in a popular sense not so much by their lives as by the way these lives ended. In the same way their characters are popularly portrayed as female stereotypes: the Betrayed Wife, the Temptress, the Good Woman, the Ugly Sister, the Bad Girl and, finally, the Mother Figure.

But, as Antonia Fraser brilliantly and conclusively proves, they were rich and feisty characters. They may have been victims of Henry’s obsession with a male heir, but they were not willing victims. On the contrary, they exhibited remarkable degrees of spirit and defiance of which women living now might still be proud. They displayed considerable strength and intelligence at a time when their sex supposedly possessed little of either.

Antonia Fraser deals with each woman in turn with sympathy — the sympathy they deserve for having had the unenviable fate of being Henry’s wife. Inevitably there was great rivalry between them, so high were the stakes in the great game of marrying the King of England. There was jealousy too — the desperate jealousy of Queens who found themselves abandoned, but also the sexual jealousy of the King who discovered himself betrayed.

The story Antonia Fraser tells is romantic and cruel, funny and sad, dramatic and enthralling. This is historical biography at its very best.”

Africa Looks Ahead by W. Singleton Fisher; Julian Hoyte; (£18.00)Publisher: Pickering & Inglis — 1948Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Poor Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the edges, faint stain over most of verso and front left edge. Price Clipped. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. Maps to the endpapers. From the flap: “A young surgeon, clever, keen and ambitious, comes into contact with one of Africa’s greatest missionary explorers. In doing so he receives a vision of the great need of that vast continent — the slave trade taking its toll of thousands; oppression, black magic, witchcraft and disease causing untold sufferings, millions knowing nothing of the love of God or of the coming of Jesus Christ into the world. Setting out for Central Africa, this young surgeon travels hundreds of miles, facing many dangers, seeking out the African villages in the forests and on the plains, telling a pagan people the story of the Saviour of men. Helped by his undaunted wife, a trained nurse, he brings healing to many, as together they lead those that sit in darkness to faith in Jesus Christ. Founding a hospital, an orphanage and a school, the devoted couple contribute in many ways to the forward look of the Africa of to-day.”Notes: Size: 8¾" x 5¾". Catherine The Great: A Biography Of The Empress Of All The Russias by Zoé Oldenbourg (£11.50)Publisher: Heinemann — 1965Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with a snag at the head of the spine. Leans slightly. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: First British Edition. [First Published: Editions Gallimard, 1965] Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “Oldenbourg’s story of Russia’s incredible empress is far more exciting than most novels, infinitely better written than most histories. But it is not the politics of Catherine’s reign that Mme Oldenbourg has sought to depict in this book; it is the woman who became empress that she has brought to life. By concentrating on Catherine’s early years, Zoé Oldenbourg has succeeded in explaining a woman who had remained an enigma, even to her biographers. The story is one of incredible tension; intrigue upon intrigue followed the minor German princess who intended, somehow, to reach the throne. The conflict was such that Catherine had to rule or to perish. The eventual murder of her husband, her dizzying succession of lovers, were only the outward scandalous appurtenances of a court and an era that were still shockingly brutal and primitive, Zoé Oldenbourg has captured the full majesty of this tragedy, played against the setting of Moscow’s and St. Petersburg’s imperial palaces. Extravagant and grotesque, this is none the less a moving human story.”Notes: Size: 8¾" x 5¾". Black boards with Silver titling to the Spine. 311 pages. At the dawn of a new millennium, religion no longer holds a monopoly on what is considered sacred: we are all on a journey of discovery in which we are finding meaning for ourselves. Throughout his adult life, Roger Housden has regularly dropped his ordinary routine and gone walkabout in remote and urban regions of the globe. What makes a journey sacred for Roger Housden is not whether it follows some ancient pilgrim’s path or leads to some holy shrine but whether it stirs our own authentic heart. It is sacred if it sensitizes the individual to the deeper realities of his own being and to the world about him.”Notes: Jacket designed by Timothy Hsu. Size: 9¼" x 7¼". 178 pages. My Land of the North: Memories of a Northern Childhood by Catherine Cookson (£10.50)Publisher: Headline — 1999Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0747274444]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper with a small nick to the tail of the spine. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated with colour photographs. A Revision of Catherine Cookson Country, First Published by Heinemann, 1986. From the cover: “Catherine Cookson was born in 1906 into the bleak industrial heartland of Tyneside, and rose to become one of the most successful novelists of all time. Life on the south bank of the Tyne was hard, often cruel, vicious and rough, and for Catherine and her unmarried mother, doubly so.

My Land of the North — previously published as Catherine Cookson Country — is Catherine Cookson’s own account of her harsh upbringing in the industrial North East, and the effect that its poverty, exploitation and bigotry had on her life and her writing. Grim though her early life was, it aroused such deep emotions in her that she fed off them for her ideas and characters for the rest of her life. And in the company of her best-loved fictional creations who meant so much to her she writes passionately about Tyneside and its people.

Richly illustrated throughout with many evocative photographs, here is Catherine’s playground as a child — the back streets of Eastjarrow, the wharves and dockyards, the Jarrow Slake and Tyne Dock arches. Here, too, are Catherine’s people, the bootless children, the black-shawled women, the sturdy men. This is the land of The Fifteen Streets, of battered, battling Fanny McBride and instinctual Kate Hannigan.

Here, too, in glorious colour, is the other face of Catherine’s land — ‘an expanse of sheer mystery… My land of mountain shadows, of hidden valleys, of barren fells, of skies stretching to infinity’. This is the land of Feathers in the Fire,of The Mallen Streak and of characters like Kate Makepeace, mysterious, unyielding, a personification of the Northumberland countryside in which she dwells..”

Bryan, a modestly well-off American who convinced people, Fergie among them, that he was vastly wealthy, and the Duchess, who wanted to shrug off the responsibilities of royalty but hoped to take the prestige and bankability of the Windsors with her, embarked upon a roller coaster ride of fast living which left Bryan bankrupt and Fergie with a world-famous overdraft. As Bryan’s friend and business partner, Allan Starkie, was drawn into this relationship, first as a stand-in for Bryan who, for most of the four-year relationship, could not be seen publicly with the Duchess, then as her unpaid business manager and, eventually, to use her own words, as her ‘dearest friend and brother’. When hospital drama series ER hit American TV screens in 1994, George Clooney finally achieved the ‘overnight’ success that he’d been working solidly towards for more than a decade. As maverick paediatrician Dr Doug Ross, he won over the hearts of millions, finally putting behind him the gruelling and often demeaning years of selling women’s shoes, cutting tobacco and appearing in more than a dozen pilot episodes for series that were never made. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with light creasing to both panels and the price clipped. Pages deeply tanned by age. Description: From the cover: “We’re not accustomed to having relations of the staff planted upon us. So runs the feeling among the girls of IV A. in St. Oswyth’s School for Girls when Judy Bethune, niece of the Latin master, arrives in the middle of the Spring Term. But Judy, although a little bewildered, is not daunted by this cool reception; with her natural friendliness, enthusiasm and love of adventure she breaks down the barrier of resentment. Herself a keen Guide, Judy tries hard to interest her school-mates in Guiding, but it is not until she has proved herself a ‘good sport’ by showing resourcefulness and pluck that her dream of a Guide Company at St. Oswyth’s comes true.

Judy’s adventures make exciting and amusing reading and will be much enjoyed by all schoolgirls.”

The title echoes her first surprised reaction to a television producer's suggestion that she undertake a series of late-night Epilogues. She accepted the challenge with results so successful that many who heard the talks wrote asking for their publication. Here they form the core of a remarkable collection of essays and the poems she modestly describes as ‘prose on short lines’, into which she has distilled over the years a deeply personal and hard-won philosophy. Among the themes she explores are — love and marriage, the experience of pain in body and mind alike — above all, an unceasing quest for the inner strength needed to fight the battle of life.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". The Cat Who Went Up the Creek by Lilian Jackson Braun (£9.50)Publisher: Headline — 2002Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0747270848]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently faded at the spine of the dust wrapper. Pages very gently age-tanned.Description: Reprint. [First: Same Year] From the cover: “Pickax’s favourite columnist, James Qwilleran, is enjoying a brief holiday at the Nutcracker Inn in the nearby town of Black Creek — but his two Siamese, who prefer the spaciousness of their home, beg to differ. At least the many squirrels that have free rein on the grounds of the inn provide some measure of entertainment for Koko and Yum Yum, while Qwilleran unearths lots of material for his book-in-progress, Tall and Short Tales. But it’s not long before the blissful tranquillity is interrupted by the discovery of a body floating down the creek — the body of a man who had been a guest at the inn. And a possible motive for his murder is suggested when several gold nuggets are found in his possession. Might he have been illegally prospecting for gold in the Black Forest Conservancy, or perhaps beneath the creek? If so, it seems he wasn’t the only one in search of an easy fortune. And his competitor is far more determined to strike it rich. Qwilleran — a prize winning reporter with a nose for crime. Coko — a Siamese cat with extraordinary talents and a flair for mystery. Yum Yum — a loveable Siamese adored by her two male companions. The most unlikely, most unusual, most delightful team in detective fiction!”Notes: Size: 8¾" x 5¾". The Excommunicated by Ahmad Kamal; Charles G. Booth; (£9.50)Publisher: The Falcon Press — 1952Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good+ — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with some nicks and chips. Both boards slightly sprung. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: From the cover: “This novel concerns the lives of three people caught up in the intrigue and complex machinations of the main political groups in pre-Communist China. His story is of Mark Lansing, American newspaperman in Shanghai, his colleague, White Russian, Vianor, and Valya the latter’s young and beautiful sister. Believing that he is atoning for the seduction of his father’s youthful second wife, Mark refutes the love he has for the young girl Valya. By mischance he becomes involved in a Communist plot to devalue the country’s currency. Murders are committed in order to obtain the information he holds, and eventually his two friends are taken prisoner and held in the Soviet Embassy. In searching for them and aiding their escape, Mark realises that his life has been one long act of penance for an adolescent sin, and that his true love for Valya provides absolution. Under Kamal’s pen, the ‘exciting glamour of the Orient’ is defined in its true light. His descriptions of Shanghai after nightfall, of the imaginative intricacies of the Chinese Theatre and the character of the people themselves are rooted in the author’s deep and intimate knowledge of that land.”Notes: Jacket designed by William Kermode.
