with the Carriers in Korea: The Fleet Air Arm Story 1950-1953 by John R. P. Lansdown (£44.00)Publisher: Crécy Publishing — 1997Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0947554645]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper front flap slightly creased otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Tables; Maps to the endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “Although within living memory of those who took part, and their families, the Korean war has been largely neglected in publishing. There have been only a small number of books available and these have tended to detail the actions of the British, Commonwealth and US Armies. The fact that the British and Commonwealth navies, and particularly the Fleet Air Arm, were heavily involved has been largely overlooked.

This imbalance has at last been redressed by an author who, as a Lt. Commander, served with the Fleet Air Arm (FAA) in Korea on board the aircraft carrier HMS Glory. In this book, John Lansdown has produced the definitive record of this era, including a historical perspective of the period leading up to the conflict and a full and detailed history of sea and air operations in South East Asia from 1950-1953. All Royal Navy and United States Navy ships involved in the conflict are mentioned, and all the carriers which saw action are detailed in the text. This vital work of reference is enlivened by a stunning photographic content and extracts from the Squadron Diaries and Line Books, covering every day that aircraft flew into battle. A unique and absorbing book.”

Britain & The Sea by VARIOUS (£32.00)Publisher: St. James's House — 2005Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good - in Very Good DJ. Very slightly ruffled edges of DJ.Description: Illustrated with colour photographs. From the cover: “Britain has a proud maritime heritage encompassing the impressive history of the Royal Navy, as well as the contribution made by civilian seafarers over the years. Yet rather than dwelling on the past, the focus of this book goes beyond the current horizon and embraces the advances that have been made in all spheres of contemporary life. Accordingly, we identified a breathtakingly diverse host of organizations and institutions, many of them international, which, through excellence in their particular spheres, continue to contribute to one common aim. That aim is to ensure that Britain remains a prosperous, outward-looking force for good in the world community, as well as a tolerant and benevolent nation which some 60 million of us are privileged to call home.”Notes: Size: 11¾" x 8½". The Rise and Fall of Imperial Japan, 1894-1945 by Edited by S. L. Mayer (£16.00)Publisher: Bison Books — 1985Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0861241428]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the edges, short closed and tape-reinforced to the spine ends. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Reprint. [First: 1984 thus, previously published as ‘The Japanese War Machine’ in 1976] Maps to the endpapers. Illustrated with photographs, in colour & black and white. From the cover: “In 1868, Japan emerged from feudalism and civil conflict as a comparatively undeveloped industrial state in an age of European imperialism in East Asia. Within a generation, Japan had risen to the ranks of the foremost industrial and military powers in the Western Pacific. A generation later, Japan had become the paramount power in East Asia, and her naval and air forces spread Japanese power across the Pacific. The formidable weapon built in the name of the Emperor swept across China and Manchuria; her air forces pummelled Pearl Harbor and Darwin; her armies marched to Singapore and the gates of India. Her navies seized some Aleutian islands and strafed the California coast. By 1942 the world had come to know the power of the most devastating force in the Pacific — the Japanese War Machine.

The force and power of the Japanese War Machine is told here by some of the world’s leading experts in guns, tanks, planes, and ships of World War II. The drama of Japan’s seizure of Manchuria, the take-over of the State by the Army, the invasion of China, the simultaneous attack on Malaya, Hawaii, the Philippines and the oil-rich Dutch East Indies is told in all the horror and shock the Japanese invader placed before Western eyes. The fall of Singapore and Hong Kong, the conquest of Burma and Indo-China took place within a hundred days. The flag of the Rising Sun ruled a maritime empire from the Russian border to the gates of Australia, from Burma to Midway.

But the strength of the Japanese War Machine depended on Japanese industrial power, which in the end, was no match for the United States and its Allies. The Japanese soldier, infused with the warrior code of Bushido fought hard and long in New Guinea’s jungles; as the struggle was brought closer to Japan’s home islands, the Japanese soldier fought on tenaciously in the Philippines and on Iwo Jima and Okinawa. The air forces began suicide missions, thekamikaze, which drove into Allied aircraft, heroically and fanatically.. .but all too little, too late. The nuclear holocaust, which ended World War II, left a ruined Japan and a wrecked Japanese War Machine.

THE RISE AND FALL OF IMPERIAL JAPAN is the tragic and noble history of a gallant people led into a misguided war. The millions who suffered in Asia and the Pacific in the wake of the Japanese War Machine bear silent tribute to its folly.”

Spillover: Animal Infections and The Next Human Pandemic by David Quammen (£15.50)Publisher: New York & London: W. W. Norton & Company — 2012Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Signed by the Author.[ISBN: 9780393066807]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and the top corners of the boards with commensurate wear to the dust wrapper. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Signed by the author, with dedication, on the half-title page — unverified and reflected as such in the lack of premium. Contains: Maps;

From the cover: “The next big and murderous human pandemic, the one that kills us in millions, will be caused by a new disease — new to humans, anyway. The bug that’s responsible will be strange, unfamiliar, but it won’t come from outer space. Odds are that the killer pathogen — most likely a virus — will spill over into humans from a nonhuman animal.

David Quammen’s Spillover is a “masterpiece of science reporting” (Walter Isaacson) that tracks this subject around the world. For five years, Quammen shadowed scientists into the field — a rooftop in Bangladesh, a forest in the Congo, a Chinese rat farm, a suburban woodland in Dutchess County, New York — and through their high-biosecurity laboratories. He interviewed survivors and gathered stories of the dead. He found surprises in the latest research, alarm among public health officials, and deep concern in the eyes of researchers. Spillover delivers the science, the history, the mystery, and the human anguish as page-turning drama.

From what innocent creature, in what remote landscape, will the Next Big One emerge? A rodent in southern China? A monkey in West Africa? A bat in Malaysia that happens to roost above a pig farm from which hogs are exported to Singapore? In this age of speedy travel between dense human populations, an emerging disease can go global in hours. But where and how will it start? Recent outbreaks offer some guidance, and so Quammen traces the origins of Ebola, Marburg, SARS, avian influenza, Lyme disease, and other bizarre cases of spillover, including the grim, unexpected story of how AIDS began from a single Cameroonian chimpanzee.

Spillover asks urgent questions: Are these events independent misfortunes, or linked? Are they merely happening to us, or are we somehow causing them? What can be done? But Spillovers more than a clarion work of reportage. It’s also the elegantly told tale of a quest, through time and landscape, for a new understanding of how the world works.”

The Epic of Malta: A Pictorial Survey Of Malta During The Second World War by Anon. (£15.50)Publisher: Melitensia Editions — 1993Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 9990958076]Condition: Very Good. Gently rubbed at the edges of the spine and wraps. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: 2nd edition. [First Edition Thus: 1990] Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the introduction: “The Epic of Malta was published in London by Odhams Press during the Second World War ‘as a small token of admiration and gratitude’. The entire proceeds of its sale, which must have been speedy and steady, were devoted to the Malta Relief Fund — a contribution to the general war effort. The book does not bear a date, but the content clearly indicates that it was published shortly after the George Cross — awarded to Malta in April 1942 — had been formally presented in an official public ceremony in September of that year. A copy of the book at the University of Malta Library, obtained originally from the Malta Garrison Officers' Library, is stamped by the colony's Information Office and bears the date 28 May 1943.”Notes: Foreword or introduction by Professor Henry Frendo. The Grub Street Dictionary of International Aircraft Nicknames, Variants and Colloquial Terms by John Horton (£11.50)Publisher: Grub Street — 1994Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0948817755]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dustwrapper.Description: From the flap: “John Horton has compiled a comprehensive A-Z of aircraft names which is as rich and fascinating as the history of aviation itself. His book, the first of its kind on the market, explores evocative names such as the Seven Day Bus, the Supermarine PB9 built in a week and the Aardvark, which refers to the General Dynamics F-III and its modus operandi, rather than its appearance as a great long nose grubbing the dirt. The subculture of informal and colloquial names has remained as vigorous and inventive throughout the century and Horton covers models from World War 1 to Vietnam. Such names not only tend to be humorous and anecdotal in nature, but also reveal the more interesting characteristics of the aircraft concerned.”Notes: Size: 8¾" x 6". Among the important recent decisions referred to are Joachimson v. Swiss Bank Corporation, and Tournier v. National Provincial Bank, which both bear upon the relation between banker and customer. It has also been thought desirable to deal more fully with other subjects, such as covenants in restraint of trade, the position of the collecting banker, and arbitrations. Not many statutory changes in the law called for special notice, but the main provisions of the Carriage of Goods by Sea Act, 1924, which are likely to affect commercial transactions to a considerable extent, have been summarised.”Notes: Foreword or introduction by Herbert Jacobs. Portrait Of The Cotswolds by Edith Brill (£10.50)Publisher: Robert Hale — 1971Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0709124988]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Slightly ruffled edges of the dust wrapper, laminate lifting very slightly near spine, with a closed triangular tear at the head of the lower panel. Gently faded at the spine of the dust wrapper. Price Clipped. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: New edition. [First Edition: 1964] Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “A portrait of a region, like a portrait of a person, depends on the bony structure beneath the surface. The oolitic limestone of the Cotswolds is responsible not only for the smooth flowing undulations of the hills but for the special quality of its architecture, providing the material above ground and below it, worked and unworked, which gives the region its unique distinction. In this book the writer illustrates how human activities through the ages have produced the Cotswolds we see today. The medieval wool-men whose wealth came from sheep bred on the wolds enriched the little towns with churches such as Northleach, Fairford and Chipping Campden; the sixteenth and seventeenth-century stone masons evolved a local style of domestic building whose architectural grace still makes almost every Cotswold village a delight to the eye; the wealthy clothiers of the eighteenth-century left behind mills and many a fine Renaissance house. Though the region declined with the loss of the clothing trade to the North of England it escaped the sprawl and litter of the Industrial Revolution. It waited quiescent, to be discovered by William Morris and others seeking an unspoilt England. The first half of the twentieth-century saw the Cotswolds becoming widely known as artists, craftsmen and writers began to recognize its great natural and architectural beauty. The motor car made it easily accessible, and now it has become one of Britain’s important tourist centres. But it still retains the individuality impressed upon it through the ages by the nature of its stone and the character of its inhabitants.”Notes: Jacket designed by Kenneth Scowen (Photo.). The Road to Harley Street by William Byam (£9.50)Publisher: Geoffrey Bles — 1963Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Poor Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with a tape repaired tear to the top corner of the upper panel, fraying and slight loss to the bottom corner of the lower panel and faded at the spine. Price Clipped. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “Twice in his life did entomology mould William Byam’s career. His interest in moths and butterflies prompted his housemaster at Wellington to ask if he was really cut out for the Army career that was taken for granted. And lice helped pave his way to the Mecca of the medical world—Harley Street. In the years between he had quarrelled with his father over his decision to enter medicine, tried in vain to placate him by entering the R.A.M.C. and in 1906 sailed for Egypt. There his services were soon snapped up by the Egyptian Army and Bimbashi Byam’s first job was a 20-day nightmare trip to bring in a desperately ill man. He was in the Sudan for several years, waging war against mosquitos, unhygienic conditions and ignorance as well as surviving a disastrous punitive expedition against the slave-raiding Anuak tribe of Ethiopia. He had many adventures before he was called to Cairo, including a clandestine spell in the Balkan War, and in 1914 found himself struggling to convert a Base hospital for the New Zealanders out of virtually nothing. Later he was invalided home and initiated the research which proved that lice droppings caused the scourge of ‘Trench Fever’.

William Byam was one of the most brilliant medical students of his day but lacked money to follow the conventional route to the top of his profession. But his years of work under heartbreaking conditions never quenched his skill and laid the foundations for the success described in Doctor Byam in Harley Street. In this new book he reveals his early encounters with many eminent physicians and patients, as well as unprofessional meetings with other famous and colourful people in many spheres.”

(£8.50)Publisher: Berrett-Koehler — 2002Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 1576751740]Condition: Very Good.Description: From the cover: “Leadership and Self-Deception shows how most personal and organizational problems arc the result of a little-known problem called “self-deception”. Through an entertaining and highly instructive story, Leadership and Self-Deception shows what self-deception is, how people get trapped in it, how it undermines personal achievement and organizational performance, and — most importantly — the surprising way to solve it. The Arbinger Institute is a management training and consulting firm and scholarly consortium that includes people trained in business, law, economics, philosophy, the family, education, and psychology. Together, the members of Arbinger work to apply the sweeping implications of self-deception and its solution to all aspects of organizational, community, and family life. David Joyce covers all the general principles of container gardening: he discusses topics such as foliage versus flowers, the use of colour, and planting for even the bleakest winter months. A solid but accessible reference section on gardening techniques tells you all you need to know about planting methods, materials for the various types of containers, as well as essential pruning and simple propagation techniques. Advice on genera! plant care and upkeep will ensure that your schemes have lasting appeal.

Detailed instructions are also given for specific planting projects, including a summer window box, ornamental hanging basket and even a colander! Step-by-step instructions, accompanied by specially commissioned photographs, explain how to plant the various types of containers and where to position them.

An invaluable directory at the back of the book describes those plants most suited to this form of gardening and suggests which plants to display together for the most stunning and rewarding effects. Each entry highlights the plant’s outstanding qualities, states its planting requirements, and indicates whether it is suitable for growing in a hanging basket, window box or other form of container.
