Campaign Trading: Tactics and Strategies to Exploit the Markets by Jack Sweeney (£68.00)Publisher: John Wiley & Sons — 1996Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 047114150X]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently faded at the head of the spine otherwise a very well presented copy. The boards and spine appear to have been "recovered" before the application of the titling with a small area of overlap of the cloth. Not unpleasant. Odd. Binding unaffected.Description: From the cover: “Success in the trading arena requires the ability to change strategies on a regular basis in order to accommodate moves in the market and shifts in investment preferences. And while having a solid trading system in place is important for attaining favorable and profitable results, it is equally important to have an overall approach that is flexible. After all, any given system is only effective for a certain period of time, under a specific set of circumstances. Campaign Trading gives you the tools you need to develop a strong trading style that can be adjusted, refined, and retuned, when necessary, to meet the demands of current market behavior.

Author John Sweeney, Technical Editor of the highly regarded Technical Analysis of Stocks & Commodities magazine, has written a one-of-a-kind book that focuses on the “big picture”. He maps out a game plan with which you can win the trading war, not just the isolated battles. Covering essential topics such as the basics and anomalies of campaigning, reversing bad trades, reversing out of ranges, and using options to shift the odds, this invaluable reference shows you how to build a sound base for campaigning. You will learn what measurement techniques to use, how to test trading rules for effectiveness and how to pick the types of trades you will use in future campaigns.”

Chance Acquaintances and Julie de Carneilham by Colette (£53.00)Publisher: Penguin — 1957Binding: Paperback Condition: Good. An adequate reading copy only. Gently faded at the spine. Pages lightly age-tanned.Description: First in this, paperback, edition. From the cover: “The two short novels contained in this volume vary widely in mood and treatment, Julie de Carmilhan is a straightforward novel of pre-war Paris, alternating between the studio of the proud but impecunious Julie and the house of her ex-husband, the Comte d’Espivant, who has recently married a wealthy widow. Julie is of ancient Breton lineage, an aristocrat as much at home in a riding boot as in a dancing slipper. But she is still attracted to the Comte, who makes use of her affection to improve his financial position. But the family traditions of independence and horsemanship free her from Parisian intrigue when she returns with her brother to her father’s Breton estate. Chance Acquaintances is a story told in the first person. Colette goes, accompanied by her cat, to a health resort. Here she becomes involved with a married couple. Though first drawn towards the husband, it is the invalid wife who finally wins her affection. This does not prevent Colette, while on one of her business trips to Paris, from performing an errand of intrigue for the husband.”Notes: Jacket designed by Dennis Bailey. The Cuvier-Geoffrey Debate: French Biology in the Decades Before Darwin by Toby A. Appel (£52.00)Publisher: New York & Oxford: Oxford University Press — 1987Binding: Hardback [ISBN: 0195041380]Condition: Near Fine. Description: Illustrated by way of: Appendices [4];

From the cover: “For scientists, no event better represents the contest between form and function as the chief organizing principle of life as the debate between Georges Cuvier and Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire. This book presents the first comprehensive study of the celebrated French scientific controversy that focused the attention of naturalists in the first decades of the nineteenth century on the conflicting claims of teleology, morphology, and evolution, which ultimately contributed to the making of Darwin’s theory.

This history describes not only the scientific dimensions of the controversy and its impact on individuals and institutions, but also examines the meaning of the debate for culture and society in the years before Darwin.”

D.H.: An Outline of de Havilland History by C. [Cecil] Martin Sharp (£34.00)Publisher: London: Faber & Faber — 1960Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with tape repairs to the reverse of the foot of both panels. Price Clipped. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Appendices [11]; Black & White Photographs; Diagrams; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “This full story of de Havilland marks the fiftieth anniversary of Sir Geoffrey’s first successful flight. It is probably the most complete history so far written of any organization in the aircraft industry.

Mr. Martin Sharp insists that he has recorded only the bare facts. The facts about de Havilland are rich and poignant. In not seeking to embellish them, but setting out to give them fully and objectively, he has produced a book of absorbing interest.

The reader will form his opinion of the men, their products, their industry, from what they actually did and said, and not from ideas that an author might advance. He will sense the spirit, emanating from de Havilland and the team around him, which has pervaded the whole world-wide organization. The student will find a narrative well indexed and supported by appendices of data on aircraft and engine types, lists of notable flights and records.

The story of the first jet airliner, with the technical outcome of the Comet inquiry, is authentically told for the first time.

Every phase of the saga of half a century is here described, from the spring day in 1908 when de Havilland journeyed to Oxford and gently won his grandfather’s financial help to build a flying machine. In that moment the de Havilland Enterprise was born. Now it is building a missile capable of launching a satellite into orbit around the Earth.”

Out of the Crisis by W. Edwards Deming (£34.00)Publisher: Cambridge University Press — 1988Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0521305535]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Top edge of the text block tanned. Description: From the cover: “This book examines two of the central issues facing industry — how to increase productivity without sacrificing quality, and how to capture markets from competitors. It is a practical book, with abundant illustrations, written for managers — whether in the manufacturing or service sectors. Dr Deming has a worldwide reputation for his work in establishing statistical process control techniques for quality as the route to competitive success in the new economic age. His involvement with Japanese managers is widely accepted as having contributed to their enviable reputation for quality manufactured goods.

The book provides a full account of Deming’s thinking on the primacy of management’s role in improving quality and productivity. He demonstrates what managers do wrong and how costs, dependability and quality can and must be improved. This is not just another manual of techniques; Deming provides a new theory of management which gets to the roots of the problems of industrial competitiveness which face managers today..”

Real Options: A Practitioner's Guide by Tom Copeland & Vladimir Antikarov (£34.00)Publisher: Texere — 2001Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1587990288]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine with a little wear to the dust wrapper as a result. Description: From the cover: “Determining the feasibility and the priority of potential investments is critical in business decision making. A new method for estimating the value of investments — real options — is gaining ground over the traditional approach of calculating net present value (NPV). Tom Copeland and Vladimir Antikarov argue that in ten years real options will replace NPV as the central paradigm for investment decisions.

This book offers the first practitioner’s guide for understanding and implementing real options in everyday decision making. The authors bring years of experience with dozens of corporations in implementing real options.

Copeland and Antikarov show how NPV is flawed and tends to undervalue investment opportunities. NPV is a static calculation that fails to consider the many options that management has over the lifetime of an investment project. Such options include expanding or extending the project if results are better than expected or scaling down or abandoning the project if it turns out to be worse than expected.

There are chapters that deal with valuing various types of simple options, such as deferral, abandonment, expansion, and contraction of projects, and more advanced options such as compound and switching options. Chapter 2 shows how Airbus Industrie uses real options in its marketing efforts and discusses the difficulties encountered in implementing real options. Chapter 7 shows how to write an Excel spreadsheet to value simple options, combinations of them, and compound options. Chapters 9 and 10 discuss ways of modelling uncertainties.

The analysis is enriched with case histories and case solutions. The end-of-chapter questions and problems provide both experience and additional insights into the application of real options..”

A Horseman Through Six Reigns: The Reminiscences Of A Royal Riding Master by Horace Smith (£28.00)Publisher: Odhams Press — 1955Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good — in Poor Dust Wrapper. Edges of the dust wrapper frayed and rubbed with loss at the spine ends and tips. Boards sunned at the margins. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Pages lightly age-tanned.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “Horace (‘Cadogan’) Smith—the man who taught the Queen to ride — is known and respected throughout what he himself calls the “Horsey” world. He has lived and worked among horses for three-quarters of a century, and has won prize after prize at major horse shows all over Britain, from the International Horse Show at Olympia downwards. As a dealer he has bought and sold nearly twelve thousand horses during his lifetime. And as a judge of horses Horace Smith has been — and still is — in great demand at all the leading shows in Britain and many in Europe and America as well.

There is a strong sense of nostalgia about his brightly written autobiography. In these pages he transports the reader back through the years to a world that is no more, picturing spacious, leisurely days that had a charm all their own.

The horse was the normal form of road transport when Mr. Smith’s career began in the last decade of Queen Victoria’s reign. He joined his father in the well-established family business of W. J. Smith Limited, Horse Dealers, when he was sixteen. And many are the fascinating stories he has to relate of the cut-throat competition in the horse trade in London at the turn of the century.”

A Manager's Guide to Operational Research by Patrick Rivett; Russell L. Ackoff; (£27.00)Publisher: John Wiley & Sons — 1974Binding: Hardback [ISBN: 029634706X]Condition: Very Good+. Barclays stamps to front pastedown and ffep.Description: OVER the last twenty years the science of OR has grown rapidly. It has grown not only in the sophistication of the techniques which it uses, not only in the rapid intake of the personnel employed, not only in the rapid increase of the salaries of all those working in this field, but it bas also grown in the type of problem it tackles and in the maturity it brings to these prob- lems. Such has been its rapid growth that notwithstanding the great deal of interaction between the OR scientist and the industrialist, the management executive often hasn't a clue what it is that the OR men in his company are doing. For the man who does not yet have OR within his company, there is the perplexing problem of whether he should undertake OR and, if he does, what is going to happen, what sort of people will he employ and how will they go about their business. To introduce OR into a company requires a tremendous act of faith on the part of the executive. 107pp. Index. Size: 8vo Demy (8½" x 5½")

Slightly rubbed at corners of the wraps. A very nice copy.Description: I have written this book because I think its subject is the most important one imagmaDle.We are at the beginning of the neuroscientific revolution. At its end, we shall know how the nund works, what governs our nature, and how we know the world. Indeed, what is now going on in neuroscience may be looked at as a prelude to the largest possible sdentific revolution, one with inevitable and important sodal consequences. But this is not a sdentific book, at least not in the strict sense. It is a book about sdence and also about my own opinions. To write it I have had to put aside the habits of caution that are necessary to the working scientist in order to explain some rather technical matters to nonspecialist readers who occupy themselves elsewhere. So much the worse for the habits - particularly if I can persuade those who are not in the business to be interested, to lend it their support, and to share in the excitement of being on the threshold of knowing how we know. 280pp.Notes: Size: B Format (7¾" x 5¼").

Teacher Supply and Teacher Quality: Issues for the 1990's by Edited by Gerald Grace & Martin Lawn (£23.00)Publisher: Multilingual Matters — 1991Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 1853591556]Condition: Good. Rubbed at the tips of the wrappers. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank. Description: From the cover: “When Sir Claus Moser said in his Presidential Address to the British Association (1990) that “central to all school problems is the state of the teaching profession”, he was expressing a widely held view. The decade of the 1980s in many English-speaking countries has done little to improve the morale and work conditions of teachers in publicly provided education.

The gap between the public rhetoric which acknowledge the importance of teachers and the realities which teachers experience remains very great. With reference to England and Wales this timely and critically stimulating book examines the issues which have to be addressed in the 1990s. It provides an agenda for educational policies and practices which take seriously the importance of teachers as key agents for realizing equal educational opportunities for all. This agenda has relevance for educational policy in a wide range of societies.

Many of the issues raised are multicultural and international, not simply British..”

An Invaluable Treasure : A History of the TSB by Michael Moss & Iain Russell (£22.00)Publisher: Weidenfeld & Nicolson — 1994Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0297811185]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and top corners with the expected associated abrasion to the dust wrapper which is lightly spotted on the reverse. Small pen mark (not remainder) to the fore and bottom edge of the text block. Boards lightly dusty. Text complete, clean and tight but the heavier art paper has become a little tacky in places. Description: Illustrated with photographs, in colour & black and white. From the cover: “The TSB group traces its origins back almost two hundred years to the beginning of the nineteenth century when in the small Dumfriesshire village of Ruthwell the Reverend Henry Duncan founded the first savings bank in 1810. Shortly afterwards savings banks were established throughout the United Kingdom by like-minded people who advocated the virtues of thrift in an age when there was little public provision for the vicissitudes of life. From the 1840s their funds were secured by the government, hence the name trustee savings banks.

The savings banks had to compete for custom from the outset with friendly societies, life insurance companies and, from the 1860s, with the Post Office Savings Bank, the brain-child of William Ewart Gladstone. In the face of adversity the savings banks formed an Association to protect their status and secure better services for their customers. By the end of the century savings banks had started to amalgamate, a trend which was to accelerate in the coming years. The savings banks also changed their appeal away from saving for a rainy day to saving for a purpose — the purchase of household goods or a holiday.

During the first and second world wars the savings banks served a crucial role in mobilising personal savings for the war effort, using imaginative poster campaigns. Although the savings banks began to explore the possibility of providing what were in effect commercial banking services in the 1920s, it took over fifty years for the TSBs to come together to form the modern clearing bank.

The development of the TSB into one of Britain’s largest private client banks is a fascinating story of struggle and achievement. Michael Moss and lain Russell trace the origins of the movement back to the late eighteenth century and set the TSBs in the wider context of both spending and saving. They show how the TSBs had on the one hand to join with other thrift and temperance organisations to condemn extravagance and on the other to compete often hard for their custom with these selfsame organisations. They explore the relationship, often uneasy, between the savings banks and the national savings campaign inaugurated during the first world war. They describe the dramatic events leading up to flotation in 1986.

The book is heavily illustrated, particularly with evocative advertisements appealing for savings or warning against the dangers of profligacy..”
