The Ethics of Educational Research by Edited by Robert G Burgess (£19.50)Publisher: The Falmer Press — 1989Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 1850002983]Condition: Good. A pleasant enough reading copy. Light reading creases to the spine. A little faded at the spine and on to the margins of the wrappers. Gently rubbed at the edges of the spine and wrappers. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: First in this, paperback, edition. From the cover: “Much of the literature on social and educational research is concerned with the design, collection and analysis of research data. While many works focus on technical procedures, they avoid ethical questions about the conduct of social investigation. It is this gap in the literature that The Ethics of Educational Research is intended to fill.

Each chapter makes a contribution to the discussion of the ethics of educational research in general. Accordingly, part one provides accounts of the ethical issues involved in a range of research methods, while part two provides examples of the ethical issues that researchers encounter in particular projects or fields of study devoted to education. In this respect, the chapters locate discussions of ethical principles in research experience..”

The Climate of Treason: Five Who Spied For Russia by Andrew Boyle (£12.50)Publisher: Hutchinson — 1979Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 009139340X]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the flap: “How did it happen that three young men, all contemporaries, all members of the English upper class, all products of public schools and Cambridge University should join the profession in the service of the Soviet Union and, over a period of years, consistently betray their country? Boyle looks at the political and social background to the whole amazing episode. Philby, Burgess and Maclean are the best-known of the undergraduates recruited by the Communist Party at Cambridge in the 1930s, because they were the extreme cases, the men who actually spied against their country But, so far as membership of the Party was concerned, they were only the tip of the iceberg.”.Notes: Size: 8¾" x 5½". 504 pages. Anthony Blunt: His Lives by Miranda Carter (£11.50)Publisher: MacMillan — 2002Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0330367668]Condition: Very Good. Light reading creases to the spine.Description: First in this edition. Illustrated with B&W photographs. From the introduction: “From the moment of his exposure as a former Russian spy by the Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, in November 1979, Anthony Blunt became a man about whom anything could be said. He was described as ‘the spy with no shame’. He was ‘an arrogant evil poseur’. He was a ‘treacherous Communist poof’. It was rumoured that at Cambridge he had seduced and blackmailed impressionable undergraduates into serving his nefarious schemes. He had been responsible for the deaths of forty-nine wartime Dutch Special Operations agents behind enemy lines; he might, indeed, have been responsible for any number of deaths. Twenty-two years after Blunt’s exposure, much has changed. Perhaps the most important of all these changes has been the end of the Cold War. The ideological polarizations which divided almost all political and intellectual life, in Britain as elsewhere, have eased. Blunt’s history can be seen in its particularity, rather than as an exemplary (to many, exemplarily hateful) general case. From this new perspective, his life vividly illustrates certain key moments and themes of twentieth-century Britain: intellectual, political, sexual and social.”Notes: Size: B Format (7¾" x 5¼"). 590 pages. Axis by Clive Irving (£11.50)Publisher: Hamish Hamilton — 1980Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dustwrapper. Dustwrapper a little rubbed at the edges with a ¼" closed tear to the bottom corner of the upper panel. Top edges of text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: From the flap: “Could World War II have been avoided? As it began Winston Churchill said: ‘It could have been stopped. It should have been stopped.’ When had that chance been lost? And why? Axis weaves around these questions a fictional narrative that nowhere falsifies history. It re-creates the atmosphere of Europe in the shadow of Hitler and the deep conflicts of allegiance in Britain and Germany. For Group Captain Edward Seton the Munich crisis brings these conflicts to a head. Seton knows that Hitler’s position is based on a massive deception — but he also knows why the British will to resist Hitler has been undermined. Behind the cover of appeasement a deeper plot to ally Britain and Germany has powerful adherents. Ruth Dexter, a young American, reveals to Seton the extent of the plot and together they are drawn into an intrigue reaching to the German spymaster, Admiral Canaris.”Notes: Jacket designed by Don Macpherson. My Autobiography by Dickie Bird; Keith Lodge; (£11.50)Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton — 1997Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Reprint. Signed by the author on the title page — unverified and reflected as such in the lack of premium. Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “Dickie Bird’s retirement was an international event shown on millions of TV screens and covered in newspapers throughout the world. He is a household name, an eccentric, and one of the most loved and respected characters in world cricket. Here at last is his autobiography. The most famous cricket umpire of them all, Dickie has done that difficult job more skilfully than anyone else. Moreover he has done it in his idiosyncratic style and with the infectious humour which has endeared him to millions throughout the world, transcending his sport. Fiercely proud of his background as a Yorkshire miner’s son, his story follows his youth in Barnsley, his early days as a cricketer, through to his career as an umpire and his experiences of the international scene, all told with total honesty by this very private person. Throughout his life he has courted both controversy and comedy. This book is a mixture of forthright views on the game and those involved in it, compelling accounts of what it is like behind the scenes in cricket at the highest level, and hilarious stories, for which Dickie is so well known.”Notes: Foreword or introduction by Michael Parkinson. Dream and Deed: The Story of Katharine Lee Bates by Dorothy Burgess (£9.50)Publisher: University of Oklahoma Press — 1952Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little wrinkled at the edges, rubbed at the head of the spine. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “This is the story of Katharine Lee Bates — her personal life, her friendships, her writing, and her many years of affiliation with Wellesley College.

Katharine Lee Bates entered Wellesley in the fall of 1876, one year after its founding, and was a member of its second graduating class in 1880. A distinguished alumna, she returned to teach English in 1885, becoming professor of English in 1891 — a position which she held with honour until her retirement in 1925, coincident with the Wellesley semi-centennial, at which time she was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws by her alma mater.

Dream and Deed is the discerning biography of a teacher who was also a sensitive writer and poet — who has left her mark on generations not only of Wellesley students but also of young people everywhere. Even if she had written nothing more than “America the Beautiful”, considered by many to be the most patriotic view of America ever expressed, she would be worthy of this biography.

As a teacher, “K. L. B.” was a warmly sympathetic human being; as a person, she was interesting and interested in her chosen field of English literature and humanity in general. Her letters are frequently racy and provocative, and in this story of her life Mrs. Burgess has wisely let her often speak for herself.

Because Katharine Lee Bates was for many years associated with Wellesley, her story quite naturally provides delightful glimpses of life at the college from its opening through her long tenure. Dream and Deed captures fully the human qualities of Miss Bates and her young pupils. It will be a welcome addition to every collection of biographical books.”

Echoes: Twenty-Five Years of the Telegraph Magazine by Compiled by Joanna Anstey (£9.50)Publisher: W. H. Allen — 1989Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 1852271264]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Price Clipped. Faint wrinkle to the covering of the upper board which just shows through the upper panel of the dust wrapper.Description: From the cover: “On Friday, 25 September 1964, The Daily Telegraph published the first issue of its weekly colour magazine. Now, 25 years and some 1300 issues later, here is a small selection by some of the best-known names in contemporary writing drawn from the wealth of articles that gave the Telegraph magazine its reputation as the most literate, stylish and adventurous of all the colour supplements.

These memorable and timeless pieces cover a range of subjects: historical topics such as Laurie Lee at his most poignant and poetical reporting on Churchill’s lying-in-state in 1965, Arthur Koestler reliving his bizarre experiences in France during the Second World War; light-hearted pieces from writers sent off on unlikely projects: Margaret Drabble loves her week at Butlin’s; Clement Freud loathes learning to ski (he breaks his ankle); John Betjeman writes a ghost story ;Anthony Burgess glances affectionately at British girls; There are revealing short ‘Opinion’ pieces: Harry Secombe — ‘Ever Seen a Fat Terrorist?’, Richard Gordon on Suburbia.

The collection includes short and quirky pieces by Dirk Bogarde, Bob Hope and Quentin Crisp. Russell Harty tracks down Annigoni for an unusual interview in 1978, John le Carre finds Alec Guinness is Smiley. Edna O’Brien’s Dublin and Rebecca West’s Venice are lyrical evocations, and Tom Wolfe fantasizes wittily and chillingly on how Britain could be in the year 2020.

Over forty articles are collected here, a distillation of some of the best writing of the past 25 years which will be dipped into and enjoyed for many years to come.”

Inside Story: A Documentary of the Pursuit of Power by Chapman Pincher (£9.50)Publisher: Sidgwick & Jackson — 1978Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0283984937]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dustwrapper. Dustwrapper a little rubbed at the edges, a little faded at the panels and heavier so at the spine. Price Clipped. Leans a little. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs.

From the cover: “Inside Story is a unique series of exposures and disclosures about what goes on behind the scenes in Whitehall and Westminster by a man uniquely qualified to make them.

For more than thirty years, Chapman Pincher has been close confidant of a succession of statesmen, senior civil servants, forces chiefs, ambassadors and officers of the secret intelligence and security services. This has given him unprecedented insight into the activities of the people who govern our lives and of the machinery they manipulate.

During his stormy career-no other writer has been the subject of so much discussion in the Commons-he acquired an unparalleled reputation for disclosing events and developments which Whitehall, Westminster; or both, were hoping to hide. So great was his success as an investigative journalist that in 1967 Granada instituted a special award for him-Reporter of the Decade. Ten years later, he was still at the centre of Parliamentary storms over the alleged ‘bugging’ of Sir Harold Wilson.

Scourge of ministers and Whitehall mandarins alike, he has nevertheless retained the friendship and confidence of most of them. Inside Story, which is very much an ‘I was there…’ book, is peopled not only by household names like Harold Macmillan, George Brown, Beaverbrook, Harold Wilson, Lady Falkender and Enoch Powell, but by spies and defectors like Philby, Burgess and Maclean, Vassall, Penkovsky and Lyalin.

Chapman Pincher provides new facts about affairs of consuming interest, such as the resignation of Harold Wilson, the mystery of Frogman Crabb, the political sex scandals and the operation of intelligence services against the Labour Party. For the first time, he explains why Wilson warned the electorate that ‘cohorts of distinguished journalists’ were looking for information with which to smear him and why he pursued the damaging D Notice affair He throws new light on telephone-tapping, ‘bugging’ and the operations in Britain of the CIA and the KGB, including his own relationship with one of the KGB’s dangerous agents. He also lifts the curtain on some of the occasions when he was helped in combating the KGB through his relations with MI5 and MI6.

Though Inside Story contains some fascinating reminiscences about Lord Beaverbrook — some of them hilarious — it is definitely not a book about the struggle for circulation in Fleet Street It is about the struggle for power at the hub of the nation — the Whitehall-Westminster complex, with particular emphasis on its secret departments..”

Mrs. Caudle's Curtain Lectures by Douglas Jerrold (£9.50)Publisher: Harvill Press — 1974Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0002715066]Condition: Good+ — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper, nicked at the bottom corner of the upper panel which is also slightly pulled at the head. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding. Price Clipped. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: From the cover: “In the 130 years since they were written, Mrs. Caudle’s Curtain Lectures have never lost their appeal; perhaps this is because, as Anthony Burgess says in his Foreword, the author “has recorded the Eternal Sound of Woman, especially In Bed”. Mrs. Caudle is the archetype of the bednag. Her themes are as familiar today as ever they were, and she has a remarkable talent for turning molehills into mountains: “the fun lies in the rhythms of reproach… and the tone that does not advance all that far into parody”.

As for Mr. Caudle, he is no mere “saintly sufferer”; he makes what rejoinders he can muster — “often no rejoinder can properly be made” — then he turns over and simulates sleep. But when Mrs. Caudle’s attitude changes from nagging to wheedling as she stresses the advantages which would arise if her mother came to live with them, he does tell his wife “precisely where she can go to”.

In his Foreword Anthony Burgess gives Mrs. Caudle her place in the annals of Women in English Literature, whilst Osbert Lancaster has illustrated the marital scene most vividly.”

My Autobiography by Dickie Bird (£6.50)Publisher: Coronet — 1999Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0340684585]Condition: Very Good. Pages very gently age-tanned.Description: Updated Edition. The Climate of Treason: Five Who Spied For Russia by Andrew Boyle (£6.50)Publisher: Hutchinson — 1979Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 009139340X]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and top corners with the expected associated chafing to the dust wrapper.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. Philby, Burgess and Maclean are the best-known of the undergraduates recruited by the Communist Party at Cambridge in the 1930s, because they were the extreme cases, the men who actually spied against their country But, so far as membership of the Party was concerned, they were only the tip of the iceberg.”.Notes: Size: 8¾" x 5¾".
