To Find A Golden Pony by Amanda Gavin [Clodagh Micaela Gibson Jarvie] (£278.00)Publisher: J. M. Dent & Sons — 1965Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the spine ends and corners with corresponding grazing to the dustwrapper. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Text complete, clean and tight. A pleasant copy of an uncommon title. Description: From the cover: “This is a pony book with a difference. It deals sensitively with a young girl’s companionship with animals, and how she learns to manage them while at the same time developing self-reliance during a period of delicate readjustment. Jo Garrett is five when her mother dies, and her father wisely sends her away from his Suffolk farm to live with cousins in Sussex. So, until she is ten, she comes under the spell of ponies, caring for them as well as riding them. She then returns to the farm, and her father is pleased to notice what a self-confident child she has become, with definite ideas of her own as to what she wants from life. Jo’s personality is also contrasted with all the others in the story — both human and animal — who come fully alive as individuals in this entertaining account of country life. Finally, Jo’s slow adjustment to the idea of her father’s remarriage is described with understanding and insight..”Notes: Jacket designed by Elisabeth Grant. Illustrated by Elisabeth Grant. China At War by Freda Utley (£249.00)Publisher: London: Faber & Faber — 1939Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with a little loss, heavy damp-marking to the reverse showing slightly at the panels. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Description: Illustrated by way of: Frontispiece; Black & White Photographs; Fold-Out Maps [1];

From the cover: “Freda Utley, who has just returned from the seat of war in the Far East, gives us in this book a vivid description of the Chinese war, as she has seen it from the Chinese side, backed by a brilliant expose of the Chinese political situation. One of the very few British newspaper correspondents in the war zone (she represented the News Chronicle), the only Englishwoman to visit the Yangtze fronts, and a world-renowned authority on Far Eastern matters, Miss Utley is quite exceptionally well informed, as readers of her last book, Japan’s Feet of Clay, know. A trained and accurate observer, she allows her sympathy with the Chinese cause to warm but not to warp the truth. A naturally straightforward writer, she makes her story easy to read, deeply interesting, and therefore deeply moving.”

British Battleships of World War Two: The Development and Technical History of the Royal Navy's Battleships and Battlecruisers from 1911 to 1946 by Alan Raven & John Roberts (£192.00)Publisher: London: Arms & Armour Press — 1976Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0853681414]Condition: Good+ — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges. Leans. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Jacket illustration: Howe and Queen Elizabeth at sea in December 1944 by John Roberts. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Plates [4]; Diagrams; Tables; Fold-Out Maps;

From the cover: “This large and lavishly-illustrated volume presents a comprehensive account of the design and construction of the British battleships that served in the Second World War — from the Queen Elizabeth class to Vanguard. Much of the information contained in this book, which is the result of exhaustive research conducted over many years, is published for the first time, for only recently have official documents of the period been made available to the public. British Battleships of World War Two is therefore unique in making available the full story of the design and construction of every battleship and battlecruiser class of the period as first built, together with all details of the various refits and reconstructions that each vessel underwent during its service life. The contents also include a comprehensive review of developments in weapons, gunnery, fire-control, radar, protection and propulsion, taking in every aspect of battleship design and usage; and there are sections devoted to the actions involving British battleships during the Second World War, and to comparisons between the British battleships and their counterparts in other navies.

Complementing the text are some three hundred photographs, which in themselves constitute a history of the vessels. These are supplemented by numerous superb specially-drawn sets of plans and elevations — fully detailed and based on the official builders’ plans — comprising over three hundred individual drawings. They depict the ships not only in their “as built” configurations, but show also the many modifications and alterations carried out during their careers. British Battleships of World War Two is a magnificent volume that takes its place as the definitive work of reference on the subject.”

TSR-2: Phoenix or Folly? by Frank Barnett-Jones (£104.00)Publisher: GMS Enterprises — 1994Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 187038427X]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and the top corners of the boards with commensurate wear to the dust wrapper. Leans slightly. Text complete, clean and tight. A nice copy of an umcommon title in any edition. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Diagrams;

From the cover: “In the late 1950’s the Government of the day embarked on a major initiative which was to change forever the basic structure of Britain’s Aviation Industry. At the same time the Royal Air Force had an urgent requirement for a new strike aircraft. From this emerged one of the most far-reaching military aviation programmes ever embarked upon by a British government up to that time. The subsequent arguments and debates for and against were voiced in all sections of the media, attracting both public attention and condemnation.

The new industry emerged from the ashes of the old as the British Aircraft Corporation and the Hawker Siddeley Group, however, the project that was formulated as the very incentive in bringing about the change was firstly condemned and then literally scrapped by a new, incoming government. It was always indicated that the project was cancelled because of its cost, but has this been used merely to disguise an underlying, alternative reason?

This book attempts to describe the aircraft, its systems and intended roles. At the same time it also traces the origins of the Operational Requirement and tries to piece together for the first time the controversial issues and personalities that conspired together to bring about the tragic downfall of the TSR-2.”

Naval Camouflage 1914-1945: A Complete Visual Reference by David Williams (£92.00)Publisher: Rochester: Chatham Publishing — 2001Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1861761546]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Very slight rippling to the last few leaves otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: Jacket illustration: The French cruiser, Gloire. . Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Tables;

From the cover: “This authoritative history of camouflage is undoubtedly the most comprehensive study of the subject to date. Visual and illustrative in its approach, it concentrates on the British and US navies, but the camouflage patterns of enemy navies (and selected allies) are covered as well.

Contrary to popular belief, naval camouflage at sea was not intended to ‘hide’ ships, and an in-depth commentary explains the theory and development of visual deception, and the different ways in which it was intended to work at sea.

The core of the book is a listing of all the major patterns and schemes, with their colours, characteristics and function. Wherever possible each is illustrated with at least one photograph providing the reader with a visual reference as well as a description; where there were variations, as many as possible are depicted.

This is a subject of immense importance and significance for all those with an interest in the warships of the two World Wars — this comprehensive reference book is simply the best available.”

Old Friends, New Enemies: The Royal Navy and the Imperial Japanese Navy: Volume 2: The Pacific War 1942-1945 by Arthur J. Marder, Mark Jacobsen & John Horsfield (£84.00)Publisher: Oxford: Clarendon Press — 1992Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0198201508]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper with a nick to the head of the upper panel and faded at the spine. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Appendix; Black & White Photographs; Maps; Tables; Portrait to the frontispiece;

From the cover: “This first scholarly account of the Royal Navy in the Pacific War is a companion volume to Arthur Marder’s Old Friends, New Enemies: Strategic Illusions, 1936-1941. Picking up the story at the nadir of British naval fortunes — everywhere weak and naked , in Churchill’s phrase — it examines the Royal Navy’s role in events from 1942 to the Japanese surrender in August 1945.

Drawing on both British and Japanese sources and personal accounts by participants, the authors vividly retell the story of the collapse of Allied defences in the Dutch East Indies, culminating in the Battle of the Java Sea. They recount the attempts of the ‘fighting admiral’, Sir James Somerville, to train his motley fleet of cast-offs into an efficient fighting force in spite of the reluctance of Churchill, who resisted the formation of a full-scale British Pacific Fleet until the 1945 assault on the Ryukyu Islands immediately south of Japan.

Meticulously researched and fully referenced, this unique and absorbing account provides a controversial analysis of the key personalities who shaped events in these momentous years, and makes fascinating reading for anyone interested in the Pacific War.

British Aircraft 1809-1914 by Peter Lewis (£74.00)Publisher: London: Putnam — 1962Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Poor Dust Wrapper. Edges of the dust wrapper somewhat frayed with a tear to the leading edge of the upper panel. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Chronological Tables; Plans;

From the cover: “Here presented for the first time are individual descriptions and histories of the different types of aeroplanes, and the seventeen airships, designed and constructed in Great Britain between 1809 and the outbreak of war in August, 1914.

The authoritative text, which is accompanied by 504 photographs and 106 three-view drawings, examines the various machines, both conventional and extremely unorthodox, which were used by the early British pioneers, from Sir George Cayley onwards, to lay the foundations of Britain’s prowess in the air. All types are recorded — gliders and powered, from monoplanes to multiplanes, ornithopters, seaplanes, flying-boats and helicopters. The introduction surveys the development of flying in the British Isles during the period, which is covered also by a useful chronology. This is the first time that such a comprehensive record has been made of one country’s pioneer aircraft, and it will prove to be an important addition to British aeronautical literature.”

British Experimental Jet Aircraft by Barrie Hygate (£66.00)Publisher: Hemel Hempstead: Argus Books — 1990Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1854860100]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Small ding to the foot of the upper board with a shallow crease to the bottom corner of the upper panel. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Diagrams; Tables; Plans;

From the cover: “The maiden flight of Gloster’s E28/39 experimental jet aircraft in May 1941 marked the arrival of a new age in British aviation.

In this comprehensive and unique book, Barrie Hygate traces the development of British jet aircraft, from the E28/39 to the British Aerospace EAP in 1986, through an in-depth examination of experimental or prototype jets of the period. He covers the forty-one experimentals which were built but failed to reach production, or which reached an advanced stage of construction. Produced in secrecy, with stringent funding, often utilising components borrowed from other types, these were the machines that opened new frontiers in flight research. Each in its own way reached into hitherto unknown realms of risk, often with tragic results, and they were to lead ultimately to the better-known Hunters, Scimitars, Victors, Vulcans, Lightnings, and Concorde.

In these pages, Barrie Hygate describes in detail each aircraft’s development history, construction and its power plant. He concludes each description with a 3-view, original Vn. scale drawing. Never before published in book form, these are the product of many years’ research and draughtsmanship.

British Experimental Jet Aircraft chronicles the story of this path breaking era and is an absolutory indispensable reference work for aviation enthusiasts everywhere.”

The Battle of Britain: Then and Now by Edited by Winston G. Ramsey (£57.00)Publisher: London: Battle of Britain Prints International — 1982Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0900913258]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently faded at the spine of the dust wrapper otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: 2nd (revised) edition, 1st printing, [First Published: 1980] Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Ribbon Markers [1]; Tables; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “Forty years later, After the Battle magazine has ploughed an entirely fresh furrow across this legendary field of human conflict to produce what has now come to be regarded as a memorial to The Few’.

This 816-page book contains over one thousand seven hundred pictures and over half a million words of text contributed by specialists, enthusiasts and historians. It does not attempt to re-tell the story of the battle once again. Instead it has been the Editor’s intention to bring a new aspect to the combat between July 10 — October 31, 1940 through the presentation of comparative ‘then and now’ photographs familiar to readers of After the Battle magazine.

Never before has such detailed coverage been given to the losses of either the Royal Air Force or the Luftwaffe. The graves of RAF aircrew that were killed have been listed, visited by the editorial team and photographed as a complete and lasting record of those that died. The pilots, their memorials, crashes and crash sites, and the aircraft that have survived are profusely illustrated. Twenty of the most famous fighter aerodromes from which they flew have been explored and are described as they were at the time and as they are today, with a particularly detailed account of one typical front line station.

With an extra 96 pages, the Mk II edition brings together all the additional research and information on the battle which has come to light since the book was originally published. Also included is a complete listing of ‘The Few’ — all those aircrew of Fighter Command who participated in the Battle — which is the culmination of more than twenty-five years’ work by John Holloway. Plus illustrated indexes of aircraft and personnel together with a pen portrait of Pilot Officer Keith Gillman — featured on the dustjacket.

No book has ever been published that chronicles the Battle of Britain in this way. Among its pages, men and events, aircraft and aerodromes that have already been consigned to the past are commemorated in the present.”

Handley Page Aircraft Since 1907 Revised by Derek N. James by C. H. [Christopher Henry] Barnes (£56.00)Publisher: London: Putnam — 1987Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0851778038]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: 2nd (revised) edition, 1st printing, [First Published: 1976] Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps; Plans;

From the cover: “First heard in aviation a few years before the 1914-18 war, the name of Handley Page became one to conjure with when strategic bombing of Rhineland armament factories began in 1917 as a counter-blow to the German submarine blockade of the British Isles. After the war an O/400 and a V/1500 were the first two aircraft to fly all the way from England to India, and soon afterwards Handley Page pioneered commercial air transport services across the English Channel and in China, India and South Africa.

A new generation of twin- and four-engined monoplane bombers — Hampden and Halifax — emerged to challenge Hitler’s ambition between 1935 and 1945, giving rise in turn to the Hastings and Hermes transports of the 1950s; finally the nuclear age produced the Victor transonic bomber, which remains in service as the RAF’s long-range flight refuelling tanker A new line of smaller civil transports began with the acquisition in 1948 of Miles Aircraft Ltd and from the Reading factory stemmed the very successful Dart-Herald.

This book contains photographs, three-view drawings and data of every type of Handley Page aircraft built and flown, as well as many historic project drawings not previously published, and completes the author’s trilogy, which already includes Bristol Aircraft since 1910 and Shorts Aircraft since 1900 in the series.”

The Battle of Spicheren August 6th 1870 and the Events That Preceded It: A Study in Practical Tactics and War Training by G. F. R. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding with fading to the spine and some small marks to both boards. Description: 2nd (revised) edition, later printing [First Published: 1902] Illustrated by way of: Black & White Drawings; Fold-Out Maps; Fold-out Map to the frontispiece;

From the cover: “This account, penned by a noted British military historian of the late 19th century, remains one of the best narratives of a 19th-century battle yet published.

The Battle of Spicheren was fought in early August 1870, and like many of the battles in the opening phase of the Franco-Prussian war, could be termed an encounter battle. Fighting over very difficult terrain, German forces dislodged the French II Corps after a heroic defence. Henderson not only drew on the General Staff works and other official sources available to military historians of the late 19th century — the value of his work is that he also utilised many other accounts, including regimental histories.

He presents an extremely detailed narrative of the battle. Following a full discussion of the events of 6 August 1870, he also discusses the tactics of the battle, and training and other characteristics of the troops involved.”

Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs [80]; Colour Photographs [100]; Black & White Drawings; Maps;

From the cover: “Chinese Pottery and Porcelain is a comprehensive survey of the development of ceramics from the Neolithic period to the present day. Assessing the roles pottery has played in each dynasty throughout the history of China, the author also discusses its enormous impact on the ceramic industries of the rest of the world, where Chinese porcelain has been admired and collected for centuries.

From the earliest earthenwares to the exotic burial figures of the Tang, from the classic forms and subtle glazes of the Song to the famous porcelains created especially for export or imperial tastes, the book draws upon the extensive collections of the British Museum for lavish illustration.

The author considers the purposes for which the ceramics of each period were made, how their production was organised, and what effect local conditions might have had on their final forms. Incorporating contemporary commentaries, recent archaeological evidence from kiln sites and the most up-to-date scientific analysis, the book provides a valuable new account of China’s ceramic history.”

Compulsory Mass Medication: A Factual Guide to the Fluoridation Issue Which Touches the Personal Health and Well-Being of Every Man, Woman and Child by P. [Patrick] Clavell Blount (£48.00)Publisher: The Clair Press — 1964Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the edges with creasing to both the panels and sunning to the spine. Price Clipped. Previous owners' inscription to the front pastedown. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: From the cover: “Compulsory Mass Medication shows that the fluoridation of the public water supplies is not a medical/dental issue and never has been despite the fact that millions of sincere and honest people believe that it is, just as millions of people once believed that the world was flat, but that did not make it so. Compulsory Mass Medication shows that the issue is a political/ethical one and that no person or group has the right to promote changes in the bodies of others without their consent. That is the issue and it has nothing whatever to do with the choice of medicines.

Compulsory Mass Medicationmaintains that once fluoridation has been accepted by the nation, we shall have given the State the right to interfere with the functioning and development of people’s bodies without the consent of the owner. Fluoridation is the first real attempt to make people surrender their existing right to think for themselves and to follow the dictates of conscience. If this attempt succeeds there is no knowing where it will end.

The author criticises in detail the British Ministry of Health booklet advocating fluoridation and the false ethics behind it. There are also important chapters giving verbatim extracts from Parliament and Congress and the views of leading medical and religious authorities.”

The Thatcher Era and Its Legacy by Peter Riddell (£48.00)Publisher: Blackwell — 1991Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0631182683]Condition: Good. Light reading creases to the spine. Pages lightly age-tanned. Description: First in this edition. [First: The Thatcher Decade, 1991] Jacket illustration: Mrs Thatcher leaving No. 10 for Buckingham Palace after resigning.

From the cover: “In 1989, in The Thatcher Decade, Peter Riddell provided the most wide-ranging and accessible analysis to date of the impact of Mrs. Thatcher’s government on the British economy and society in the 1980s. Now, following Margaret Thatcher’s sudden and dramatic departure from office in November 1990, he extends his classic account of the Thatcher years to include an assessment of her legacy and its consequences for Britain in the next decade.

Margaret Thatcher, one of the most remarkable of all British prime ministers, presided over a period of far-reaching change in Britain’s economy, industrial structure, labour market, society and place in the world. Looking beyond the personality of Mrs. Thatcher, Peter Riddell discusses how far these changes reflected the actions of the government, intended or unintended, rather than the influence of broader, longer-term trends common to other industrialized countries. Was there, in short, a Thatcher revolution? What are the consequences of her legacy?

The Thatcher Era is essential reading for all those interested in current politics.”
