Guinness World Records 2003 by Edited by Claire Folkard (£15.00)Publisher: Guinness World Records — 2003Binding: Hardback [ISBN: 0851121470]Condition: Near Fine.Description: The deliciously pointless thing about Guinness World Records is that each year is more extravagantly eccentric than the last as people try to beat current records or to dream up new ones to set--the more outlandish the better. Andre Ludwick of South Africa, for example, holds the 2003 record for the world's largest collection of nail clippers. He has 505 pairs. Doubtless by 2004 someone will have more. And someone somewhere must already be amassing aeroplane sick bags at top speed in order to beat the current record holder Niek Vermeulen of the Netherlands. Guinness World Records began life in 1955 as The Guinness Book of Records because Sir Hugh Beaver, managing director of Guinness, the Irish brewing company, believed that the world needed a definitive reference book to settle pub-based arguments about records. Over 47 years it has grown into an institution.. Where else do you look to find out who holds the record for winning the most womens' swimming Olympic medals? (Dawn Fraser, Australia). Who is the world's most tattooed woman? Krstyne Kolorful, Canada 95% of whose body is tattooed. And Terry Cole of the UK holds the record for the useful skill of cigar box balancing. On April 24, 1992 he supported 220 on his chin for nine seconds. Guinness World Records is, as always, an entertaining browse particularly in the section on Modern Society and Buildings and Structures which are new for 2003. 288pp. Index. A Draught of Contentment: The Story of the Courage Group by John Pudney (£9.50)Publisher: New English Library — 1971Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0450009947]Condition: Good+ — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper with a couple of nicks and a litle fading. Price Clipped. Pages deeply tanned by age. Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “The British brewing industry is unique in the strength, vitality and longevity of its family connections; and also in the way in which its traditional methods are maintained and adapted to keep pace with modern technical progress.

A DRAUGHT OF CONTENTMENT tells the story of a number of family businesses, originating in the Eighteenth Century, which have come together to form the Courage Group. The Group is one of the most up-to-date commercial enterprises, yet traditional qualities of brewing are still kept alive.

The Courage story actually began in 1787 when a group of friends of a young brewer, John Courage, acquired a small brew house, just across the river from the Tower of London. This enabled him to found his family business. A contemporary of his, Robert Barclay, had already taken over Thrale’s Brewery in Southwark in partnership with John Per kins. These men were the founders of the Courage Group, as it was their descendants who were responsible for the merger this century, the other members of the Group joined later. The Simonds family of Reading were followed by Georges’ Brewery of Bristol, founded by Philip George in 1788 and, finally, by John Smith of Tadcaster. This last addition was a family business having its origins in the days of stage coaches.

Without descending into a wealth of technical detail, this richly illustrated volume describes the fascinating development and growth in each of these family businesses over the course of more than a century. Their interests spread far and wide, their territories increased, they were affected by war, slump and industrial change, but they always adapted their methods to meet the latest challenge!

Apart from the obvious interest of this book to anyone connected with brewing, the general reader will also enjoy the unusual glimpses of social and industrial history over the last hundred and eighty years..”

Almost Like a Whale: The Origin of Species Updated by Steve Jones (£9.50)Publisher: Black Swan — 2001Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 055299958X]Condition: Very Good. Upper wrapper slighty curled. Description: From the cover: “Steve Jones takes on the challenge of going back to the book of the millennium, Charles Darwin’s The Origin of Species. Before The Origin, biology was a set of unconnected facts. Darwin made it into a science, linked by the theory of evolution, the grammar of the living world. It reveals ties between cancer and the genetics of fish, between brewing and inherited disease, between the sex lives of crocodiles and the politics of Brazil. Darwin used the biology of the nineteenth century to prove his case. Now, that science has been revolutionized and his case can be reargued using the twentieth century’s astonishing advances. From AIDS to dinosaurs, from conservation to cloned sheep, bursting with anecdotes, jokes and irresistible facts, Almost lLike a Whale is a popular account of the science that makes biology make sense. It will catch the millennial mood and tell all those for whom Darwin is merely a familiar name what he really meant. It exposes the Darwinian delusions which try (and fail) to explain human behaviour in evolutionary terms, and, while giving an up-to-date account of our own past, shows how humans are the first species to step beyond the constraints of biology.”Notes: Size: B Format (7¾" x 5¼"). 499 pages. Yet, unlike business management, entrepreneurship remains shrouded in mystery — possibly because no one believes it can be taught. In Goldfinger, Robert Heller dispels the myths surrounding entrepreneurship and explores this unique area of business practice. At every stage — from initial thought processes, through planning to implementation and beyond — the entrepreneur can benefit from the examples of others, and from clear precepts and practices. There are entrepreneurs who have never needed a lesson, who have acted from instinct rather than intellect, but tracking their actions invariably reveals a pattern, based on logic and observation, controlled by methods which can be easily learned and followed.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼".
