The Stepdaughter by Caroline Blackwood (£33.00)Publisher: Gerald Duckworth & Co — 1976Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 071560967X]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: From the cover: “Caroline Blackwood’s first novel displays to full effect the ‘singular quality’ that marks all her writing. The central character is a New Yorker who has been deserted by her husband and spends her days in her luxurious apartment tormenting her sullen stepdaughter and writing imaginary letters in her head. A change comes when she confronts the girl, and the confrontation leads to an unexpected development. Caroline Blackwood’s eye for motives and relationships, and her gift for telling false from true, are at their most revealing in this powerful book.”Notes: Size: 8¾" x 5¾". Robert Lowell: A Biography by Ian Hamilton (£10.50)Publisher: Faber & Faber — 1983Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0571130453]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs;

From the cover: “Born in 1917 into an aristocratic Boston family, Robert Lowell was not yet thirty when his first major collection, Lord Weary’s Castle, won the Pulitzer Prize. With Life Studies, his third book, he found the intense, highly personal voice that established him as the foremost American poet of the generation which followed that of Pound, Frost and Eliot. A conscientious objector in World War II, Lowell held strong if complex political beliefs: with fame the poet became the public man, and what he said and did — against the Vietnam War, for example — became front-page news.

Despite literary acclaim and public recognition, Lowell was never far from personal disaster. The only child of a troubled marriage, he showed from youth signs of the manic-depressive cycle that would cripple him throughout his life and cause intense suffering to himself and those around him. These troublesand Lowell’s three turbulent marriages — to the writers Jean Stafford, Elizabeth Hardwick and Caroline Blackwood -increasingly became the material of his art.

lan Hamilton, poet and critic, has written a superb literary biography, illuminating both the life and the work with sympathetic understanding and consummate narrative skill. Quoting generously from letters, manuscripts and interviews made exclusively available to him by Lowell’s friends and heirs he has produced an unforgettable account of a life which helped to shape our time.”
