Classic Car Bodywork Restoration Manual: The Complete Illustrated Step-by-step Guide by Lindsay Porter (£48.00)Publisher: Sparkford: Haynes Publishing Group — 2010Binding: Hardback [ISBN: 9781844258291]Condition: Very Good. Illustrated throughout with step-by-step photo sequences, it describes how to undertake high-quality repairs at a fraction of the cost of that charged by an automotive body shop or restoration specialist — from removing a scratch to fitting a new body panel.

The techniques shown demystify the ‘black art’ of bodywork repair, using commonly available tools and materials to achieve professional results. It is an essential guide for anyone looking to restore or maintain a classic car on a budget.”

The Knife and Fork Man: The Life and Work of Charles Benjamin Redrup by William Fairney (£17.00)Publisher: Badminton: Diesel Publishing — 2007Binding: Hardback First Edition. [ISBN: 9780955445507]Condition: Very Good. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding with a little ding to the join of the upper board. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Contains: Black & white photographs; Colour plates; Diagrams; Colour frontispiece; Appendices [2];

From the cover: “Charles Benjamin Redrup, the engineer and inventor, was born in Newport, South Wales in 1878. Raised in Barry, he designed and manufactured the unusual “Barry” motor cycle and went on to design a prodigious range of engines for First World War aircraft, motor cycles, cars, boats and buses. He carried out most of his development work in a simply-equipped home workshop, and often said that he made most of his engines with little more than “a knife and fork".

He was the inventor of the unique “Wobble-Plate” axial engines which powered a motor launch and a Crossley Motors motor car in the 1920s. A variant of the engine flew in a Simmonds Spartan aircraft in 1929. Several variants of his axial engines powered vehicles of the Bristol Tramways and Carriage Company in the 1930s. During the Second World War he worked on top-secret armaments projects for the Lancaster and other aircraft. After the war he designed more motor-cycle engines and a large 2,000 horse-power axial aero engine. His name appears fleetingly in many reference works but no full description of his extensive and innovative work has been previously written.”

The Encyclopedia of Formula One: The New Definitive Guide to the Drivers, Cars, Circuits and Every World Championship Since 1950 by Tim Hill & Gareth Thomas (£10.50)Publisher: Parragon — 2009Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 9781407566795]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs; Maps; Results Tables;

From the cover: “When the internal combustion engine was developed in the late nineteenth century, there were those who viewed it purely in utilitarian terms, as simply another means of getting from A to B. And there were those who wanted to test their vehicles — and themselves — to the absolute limit; to get from A to B quicker than anyone else. More than a century has passed since the days of the spectacular inter-city races which launched a new field of sporting endeavour. But the raw appeal remains the same: man and machine operating as one in high-risk, high-reward gladiatorial combat.

The chase for the victors’ laurels gained fresh momentum in 1950, when the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile launched the world championship. The 30 men who have held the coveted title to date include legendary names who would feature in any list of all-time greats: Fangio, Brabham, Clark, Stewart, Senna, Prost, Schumacher. Others came agonisingly close to gaining a seat at the top table. Stirling Moss missed out narrowly on several occasions, Wolfgang von Trips was killed when the 1961 title lay within his grasp, while team orders robbed the mercurial Gilles Villeneuve of the crown in 1979.

This book chronicles the history of the world championship, from Giuseppe Farina’s victory for Alfa Romeo at Silverstone on 13 May 1950 to the present day. All the top drivers are profiled, and there is a wealth of information on the major Marques and championship venues, while the comprehensive statistics section will settle many an argument. It is a story of ingenuity and endeavour, rivalry and camaraderie, triumph and tragedy, in pursuit of the greatest prize in motor sport.”

Fiat 128 1969-72 Autobook: Workshop Manual for Fiat 128 1969-72 by Kenneth Ball (£9.50)Publisher: Autopress — 1972Binding: Hardback First Edition. [ISBN: 0851473180]Condition: Good. A pleasant enough reading copy. Boards and spine a little dulled and soiled. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Slight oiliness to parts of the text but a usuable manual all the same.Description: Illustrated with line drawings. From the cover: “This do-it-yourself Workshop Manual has been specially written for the owner who wishes to maintain his car in first class condition and to carry out his own servicing and repairs. Considerable savings on garage charges can be made, and one can drive in safety and confidence knowing the work has been done properly.

Comprehensive step-by-step instructions and illustrations are given on all dismantling, overhauling and assembling operations. Certain assemblies require the use of expensive special tools, the purchase of which would be unjustified. In these cases information is included but the reader is recommended to hand the unit to the agent for attention.

Throughout the Manual hints and tips are included which will be found invaluable, and there is an easy to follow fault diagnosis at the end of each chapter.

Whilst every care has been taken to ensure correctness of information it is obviously not possible to guarantee complete freedom from errors or to accept liability arising from such errors or omissions.

Instructions may refer to the right-hand or left-hand sides of the vehicle or the components. These are the same as the right-hand or left-hand of an observer standing behind the car and looking forward.”

The Top Gear Story by Martin Roach (£9.50)Publisher: John Blake — 2011Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 184358333X]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “From humble beginning as a 1970s motoring show, Top Gear has achieved world domination. Reaching a peak in the 1990s thanks to presenter Jeremy Clarkson, the original series then faced the axe in 2001 — but Clarkson and producer Andy Wilman successfully pitched a new format to BBC bosses and Top Gear returned to become the irreverent, funny and often controversial show we now know and love. The addition of co-presenters Richard Hammond and James May completed the Top Gear dream team and ratings soared as viewers tuned in to see the latest Star in a Reasonably Priced Car, arguments over the Cool Wall and Power Laps by the mysterious Stig.

Recent series have been defined by their madcap challenges, where Clarkson, Hammond and May have achieved such feats as building a convertible Renault Espace and taking part in the 24-hour Britcar race — with predictably hilarious results. Hour-long specials such as the 1000-mile journey across Africa in cars bought for only £1500, and a race to the magnetic North Pole in which Clarkson and May became the first people to drive a motor vehicle to the Pole while Richard Hammond joined a dog sled team, have cemented the Top Gear’s reputation as much more than just a motoring show. But the show’s most shocking moment came in 2006, when Hammond suffered serious head injuries while driving a Vampire turbojet drag racing car at over 300 mph. Top Gear has long attracted criticism for its dangerous stunts and the presenters’ controversial opinions, but thankfully ‘the Hamster’ made a full recovery and Top Gear has continued to pull in massive audiences across the world.

This is the full story of the unstoppable rise of Clarkson, Hammond, May and The Stig — and how they have transformed an ordinary programme about cars into one of the most famous and best-loved TV programmes of the 21st century.”
