Life in the Fast Lane: The Inside Story of Benetton's First World Championship by Steve Matchett (£43.00)Publisher: Orion — 2001Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0752844474]Condition: Very Good. Pages very gently age-tanned at the margins otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “The inside story of Benetton’s momentous 1994 Grand Prix Season.

Steve Matchett was the rear jack man in the Benetton pit lane team, and was himself engulfed in the terrible fire at Hockenheim.

In Life in the Fast Lane he reveals the full, inside story of the 1994 season, including the death of Ayrton Senna, the Hockenheim fire, and disqualifications as the Benetton and Williams teams battled for the Drivers’ Championship. The final showdown came in Adelaide, the last race of the season, with the controversial accident when Schumacher of Benetton and Hill of Williams collided.

Matchett’s story of the frantic and unending behind-the-scenes activity in the effort to be the fastest and the best in the world is a fascinating account of the high-pressure world of Formula One motor racing.”

Robo Sapiens: Evolution of a New Species by Peter Menzel & Faith D'Aluisio (£21.00)Publisher: Cambridge, London: The MIT Press — 2000Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0262133822]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges. Description: Jacket illustration: A face robot from the Hara-Kobayashi laboratory of the Science University of Tokyo. Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “Around the world, scientists and engineers are participating in a high-stakes race to build the first intelligent robot. Many robots already exist — automobile factories are full of them. But the new generation of robots will be something else: smart machines that act ever more like living creatures.

What will happen then? With our prosthetic limbs, titanium hips, and artificial eyes, we are already beginning to resemble our machines. And when we implant chips in our bodies to connect ourselves directly to computers, the likeness will become only more pronounced. Science fiction will have become science fact.

Meanwhile — and equally important — our machines are beginning to resemble us. Robotic spiders, crabs, geckos, and dogs are already spilling from the laboratories. The next steps are to re-create Homo sapiens itself and then go beyond. Robots can already walk, talk, and dance; they can react to human facial expressions and obey verbal commands. When scientists go on to create fully autonomous robots with greater intelligence than human beings, will they be our partners or our rivals? Will it be simply a robotic revolution or a true extension of evolution? Could machines and humankind meld into a single species — Robo sapiens ?

In Robo sapiens, award-winning journalists Peter Menzel and Faith D’Aluisio present the next generation of intelligent robots and their makers. Accompanying brilliant photographs of more than a hundred robots are extensive interviews with robotics pioneers, anecdotal field notes with behind-the-scenes information, and easy-to-understand technical data about the machines. Robo sapiens is a field guide to our mechanical future.”

The Chequered Flag: 100 Years of Motor Racing by Ivan Rendall (£18.50)Publisher: Weidenfeld & Nicolson — 1993Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0297832204]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper slightly ruffled at the tail of the spine with two short vertical marks to the centre of the upper panel. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Colour Photographs; Diagrams; Maps;

From the cover: “Motor racing was born in France. On 22 July 1894, twenty-one ‘horseless carriages’ chased each other from Paris to Rouen along the public road. Officially it was a reliability trial, but that did not stop drivers racing. Count Jules de Dion ‘won’, driving his steam car at 11 mph, only to be disqualified for taking a stoker, literally, a ‘chauffeur’, to keep the engine going.

A hundred years later, motor racing is a high-technology sport and a huge, global business. The fastest racing cars do well over 200 mph, their engines monitored by data links and computers; drivers compete for millions of pounds and they head the top rank of professional, sporting superstars.

The evolution of international motor racing, with its twin themes of individual competition and the pursuit of engineering excellence, is one of the great stories of the twentieth century. The Chequered Flag tells that story in full, as the sport celebrates its centenary.

It shows how the race track has been the motor industry’s laboratory, how the price of progress has been measured in blood and treasure and how it has been justified down the century by the improvements it has brought to the family car. But it shows, too, how the real attraction has always been the thrill of high-speed competition, the closeness to danger and death, and, for drivers, the pursuit of fame and fortune.”

The Knife and Fork Man: The Life and Work of Charles Benjamin Redrup by William Fairney (£17.00)Publisher: Badminton: Diesel Publishing — 2007Binding: Hardback First Edition. [ISBN: 9780955445507]Condition: Very Good. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding with a little ding to the join of the upper board. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Contains: Black & white photographs; Colour plates; Diagrams; Colour frontispiece; Appendices [2];

From the cover: “Charles Benjamin Redrup, the engineer and inventor, was born in Newport, South Wales in 1878. Raised in Barry, he designed and manufactured the unusual “Barry” motor cycle and went on to design a prodigious range of engines for First World War aircraft, motor cycles, cars, boats and buses. He carried out most of his development work in a simply-equipped home workshop, and often said that he made most of his engines with little more than “a knife and fork".

He was the inventor of the unique “Wobble-Plate” axial engines which powered a motor launch and a Crossley Motors motor car in the 1920s. A variant of the engine flew in a Simmonds Spartan aircraft in 1929. Several variants of his axial engines powered vehicles of the Bristol Tramways and Carriage Company in the 1930s. During the Second World War he worked on top-secret armaments projects for the Lancaster and other aircraft. After the war he designed more motor-cycle engines and a large 2,000 horse-power axial aero engine. His name appears fleetingly in many reference works but no full description of his extensive and innovative work has been previously written.”

The Encyclopedia of Dream Cars: A Celebration Contemporary and Fantasy Cars by Chris Rees (£16.50)Publisher: Index — 1998Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 1859676995]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper is pulled at the head and foot of the upper panel, with a little creasing to the foot. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: First in this edition. Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs; Diagrams; Tables; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “From the Alfa Romeo spider to Lamborghini’s Diablo; from the sensational Chevrolet Corvette to the stream-lined Toyota Celica, here is the ultimate history of cars manufactured since 1976, plus those dream and futuristic cars that were marvels of car design, even though they never made it into production.

The Encyclopedia of Dream Cars is the modern guide to the automobile. This comprehensive visual reference shows every important marque from A-Z, highlighting some of the most significant and beautiful cars of the century: the Jaguar XJ 220, the McLaren F1, the Pontiac Firebird and the Lotus Esprit. Detailed descriptions, history and technical information accompany every entry, making this the most authoritative and comprehensive guide to the contemporary classic car.

In addition to presenting the newest cars, this book also highlights the world’s dream cars that were built as showcases but were never mass-produced. From the design houses of Bertone, Ghia, Ital Design, Ogle and Pininfarina, these dream cars are at the very cutting edge of car design: futuristic models that were deemed too daring, too brash or too expensive to be marketable, but which pay tribute to the imagination and drive of car designers today.

With over 900 stunning images of the cars, this book is a definitive gallery of classic and dream cars. It is a decisive reference for every enthusiast, every collector and lover of the automobile.”

From the cover: “For over fifty years and through hundreds of races, the world has watched in awe as some of the fastest racing cars on earth have roared around the circuits of over twenty countries. With drivers of such superlative skill as Fangio, Moss, Hakkinen and Michael Schumacher, F1 has always provided high-octane excitement and thrills.

Whether you take a passing interest in the World of Formula 1 or are a confirmed addict, The Concise Encyclopedia of Formula 1 covers every conceivable angle. All the most important talents have a place: Ascari who held off Fangio’s challenge; Hawthorne, Britain’s first World Champion; Moss, the greatest driver to remain uncrowned; Gilles Villeneuve, tragically killed trying to outpace Pironi; the genius of Ayrton Senna; the furiously fast Finn Mika Hakkinen; and the man with the most race wins — Michael Schumacher.

From the drivers, the book moves to the circuits on which they raced, won and sometimes tragically died. A section on classic circuits includes the legendary Nürburgring, Britain’s demanding Brands Hatch, and the fabulous road circuit at Monaco, while a survey of all the countries that have ever held a GP includes among many the USA, Japan and Morocco.

Then come the cars — the hugely successful Ferraris of the early 1970s, the seminal Cooper Climax, the ground effect John Player Special Lotus 79 and the brilliant traction-control Williams FW14B of the early 1990s. And in orbit around the cars and their drivers are the people who make this hugely popular sport work — the powerworkers, the designers and the personalities. Men like Bernie Ecclestone, Professor Sid Watkins and Ron Dennis are measured against their effect on sport and how Fl regards them.

Complete with fascinating facts and figures, and an Fl statistics section, The Concise Encyclopedia of Formula 1 covers every angle in this fast-moving and thrilling sport.”

Making Cars At Longbridge: 100 Years in the Life of a Factory by Gillian Bardsley & Colin Corke (£11.50)Publisher: Stroud: The History Press — 2011Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0752437410]Condition: Very Good. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles;

From the cover: “Containing unique images from the official company archive, this book charts almost one hundred years of car-making at Longbridge near Birmingham. The Austin Motor Company was founded here by Herbert Austin in 1905 and it has since been home to the British Motor Corporation, British Leyland, Rover Group and latterly MG Rover. Its products include some of the most famous British models ever produced: the pioneering Austin Seven of the 1920s; the classic Mini, introduced to the world in 1959 with in astonishing production run of 41 years and a final tally of over 5 million; the Austin Metro, trumpeted as the ‘British Car to Beat the World’; and in later years the best-selling MG TF and elegant Rover 75.

The factory has been a major employer and an integral part of the local community since its foundation. The sad events of April 2005, when MG Rover went into administration, will radically change the landscape. But the area is now looking to the future, never forgetting its long and proud tradition of manufacturing.”

Bernard Shaw Volume 2: 1898-1918 The Pursuit of Power by Michael Holroyd (£10.50)Publisher: Random House — 1988Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0394575539]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the tail of the spine with a pull, and nick, to the dust wrapper. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black and White Photographs;

From the cover: “Michael Holroyd began his magnificent biography of Shaw with The Search for Love, published in 1988. The second volume, The Pursuit of Power, is the story of Shaw in his prime. He has put behind him the disappointments of his Irish childhood, as well as the years of his anonymity in London, and started on the terrible adventure of marriage. By 1914 the author of Pygmalion has become the most popular writer in England.

An author’s business, Shaw believed, is to mind everyone else’s business, and that is what he did, so in a unique way his life is a history of the times. This is the period of his great middle plays: Caesar and Cleopatra, Man and Superman, Major Barbara and The Doctor’s Dilemma. He has opinions on medical ethics, disarmament, unemployment, the conflict between men and women, and relations between Britain and the United States and between England and Ireland. With Granville Barker he revolutionizes the British stage and becomes the idol of the young.

Shaw’s activities on the Fabian front helped advance socialism in Britain. He had an extraordinary political instinct that makes his works remain topical — sometimes even ahead of their time. He used laughter as an anesthetic for the operation he wanted to perform on British society. (King Edward VII laughed so much at John Bull’s Other Island that he broke the chair he was sitting on. ) Shaw is still making us laugh today.

In The Pursuit of Power subject and author are once again perfectly attuned. Mr. Holroyd has risen to meet the challenge of Shaw’s protean personality and achievement with extraordinary versatility. He underscores the public man with the complex narrative of his private life: from perilous exploits in an automobile and on motorbike as he travels around the Continent from his home at Ayot St. Lawrence, to the jousting friendships with G. K. Chesterton and H. G. Wells and the unexpected passion and pain of his love for Mrs. Patrick Campbell. In this second volume, the author presents a magnificent portrait of a man born fifty years too soon that is at once a tragicomedy, absorbing, moving and intensely funny.”

Grand Prix Champions From Jackie Stewart to Michael Schumacher by Alan Henry (£10.50)Publisher: Weidenfeld & Nicholson — 1995Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0297835289]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper pulled at the bottom edge of the upper panel which has some light dings here and there. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs [100];

From the cover: “The career of Jackie Stewart marks the dividing line between the Formula One drivers of the past and a new generation of Grand Prix media superstars. More than any other individual, Jackie Stewart saw the potential for high earnings and a career that could last long after he hung up his helmet. The first of a new breed, he was committed not only to the sport he loved but also to maximizing his commercial value. And his savvy was timely — Stewart’s last win in 1973 corresponds roughly to the early stages of the sport’s international television coverage.

Since his retirement, Stewart has been followed by some extremely determined competitors, all of whom have effectively built on his philosophy of total commitment to succeed in what is one of the most competitive sports in the world. These men are no ordinary athletes. The demands of driving a Formula One car require them to be supremely fit both physically and mentally, and media impact demands that they maintain this both on and off the track.

The thirteen superstars that inherited Stewart’s legacy represent a charismatic cross-section of versatile sportsmen, each every bit as competitive in contract negotiations with their teams as in beating their rivals in split-second sprints to the chequered flag.

Grand Prix Champions tells the tale of a small group of elite sportsmen who are not only masters of their machines but world-renowned stars and millionaire businessmen.”

From the cover: “The Amish, one of America’s most intriguing peoples, have survived for 300 years! While much has been written on the Amish recently, little has appeared about their history. This book brings together for the first time in one volume a thorough history of the Amish people. From their beginnings in Europe through their settlement in North America, the Amish have struggled to maintain their beliefs and traditions in often hostile settings. Atlantic crossings, westward migration, military conscription and compulsory school laws were just a few of the many challenges to the Amish church through the years. Caught in the currents and conflicts of national life, the Amish have remained a distinct people in America’s melting pot. Authoritative, thorough and interestingly written, A History of the Amish presents the deep and rich heritage of the Amish people. The Road to Verdun: France, Nationalism and the First World War by Ian Ousby (£9.50)Publisher: Jonathan Cape — 2002Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0224059904]Condition: Very Good. Gently rubbed at the edges of the spine and wraps. Owner's address sticker to the reverse of upper wrap. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: First in this, paperback, edition. Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “Verdun was the largest, the longest and the bloodiest battle between the French and Germans in the First World War, lasting from February 1916 until the end of the year and claiming more than 700,000 casualties. For the French in particular, it was always more than just a battle, being rather (in Paul Valery’s words) ‘a complete war in itself, inserted in the Great War’. Ian Ousby’s new book gives a vivid, insightful account of the generals’ planning and the troops’ suffering. At the same time it goes beyond the narrow horizons of military history by locating the experience of Verdun in how the French had thought about themselves, their nation and their relations with their eastern neighbour since the debacle of the Franco-Prussian War. Verdun emerges as the mid-point in the cycle of Franco-German hostility, carrying both the burden of history and - if only by the presence on the battlefield of men like Petain and de Gaulle, France’s two leaders in the next war — the seeds of the future.”Notes: Size: Trade Paperback (9¼" x 6"). 304 pages. The Top Gear Story by Martin Roach (£9.50)Publisher: John Blake — 2011Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 184358333X]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “From humble beginning as a 1970s motoring show, Top Gear has achieved world domination. Reaching a peak in the 1990s thanks to presenter Jeremy Clarkson, the original series then faced the axe in 2001 — but Clarkson and producer Andy Wilman successfully pitched a new format to BBC bosses and Top Gear returned to become the irreverent, funny and often controversial show we now know and love. The addition of co-presenters Richard Hammond and James May completed the Top Gear dream team and ratings soared as viewers tuned in to see the latest Star in a Reasonably Priced Car, arguments over the Cool Wall and Power Laps by the mysterious Stig.

Recent series have been defined by their madcap challenges, where Clarkson, Hammond and May have achieved such feats as building a convertible Renault Espace and taking part in the 24-hour Britcar race — with predictably hilarious results. Hour-long specials such as the 1000-mile journey across Africa in cars bought for only £1500, and a race to the magnetic North Pole in which Clarkson and May became the first people to drive a motor vehicle to the Pole while Richard Hammond joined a dog sled team, have cemented the Top Gear’s reputation as much more than just a motoring show. But the show’s most shocking moment came in 2006, when Hammond suffered serious head injuries while driving a Vampire turbojet drag racing car at over 300 mph. Top Gear has long attracted criticism for its dangerous stunts and the presenters’ controversial opinions, but thankfully ‘the Hamster’ made a full recovery and Top Gear has continued to pull in massive audiences across the world.

This is the full story of the unstoppable rise of Clarkson, Hammond, May and The Stig — and how they have transformed an ordinary programme about cars into one of the most famous and best-loved TV programmes of the 21st century.”

Verdun 1916 by Malcolm Brown (£9.50)Publisher: Arcadia — 2000Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0752417894]Condition: Near Fine.Description: First in this, paperback, edition. Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “1916 was a year of killing. The British remember the Somme, but earlier in the year the heart of the French army was ripped out by the Germans at Verdun. The garrison city in north-eastern France was the focus of a massive German attack; the French fought back ferociously, leading to a battle that would claim hundreds of thousands of lives and permanently scar the French psyche. To this day one can visit the site of ghost villages uninhabited since, but still cherished like shrines. Memories of Verdun would greatly influence military and political thinking for decades to come as both sides came away with memories of bravery, futility and horror. Malcolm Brown has produced a vivid new history of this epic clash — drawing on original illustrations and eyewitness accounts he has captured the spirit of a battle that defines the hell of warfare on the Western Front.”Notes: Size: 9¾" x 6¾". 192 pages.
