Great Railway Journeys of the World: An Encyclopedia of the World's Best Locomotive Journeys by Max Wade-Matthews (£18.50)Publisher: London: Lorenz — 1998Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1859676928]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Gently faded at the spine and onto the very margins of the dust wrapper. Laminate is lifting slightly at the bottom corner of the upper panel otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “There are few finer experiences than the thrill of a classic railway journey. This remains as true today as it was in 1825, when Stephenson’s Rocket first steamed its way from Stockton to Darlington.

Great Railway Journeys of the World describes 95 outstanding railway journeys, experienced first-hand by a team of expert writers. Some of the journeys are quite short but steeped in history, notably the railway down India’s once perilous Khyber Pass; and the narrow-gauge line that carried gold prospectors from the port of Skagway to Whitehorse, in the Yukon. Others, such as the transcontinental lines of Australia and Canada, the Hastern and Oriental Express from Singapore to Bangkok, and the Red Arrow’s journey from Brussels to Hong Kong, cover thousands of kilometres.

For luxury and romance there is nothing to match the Orient Express, the Blue Train from Cape Town to Pretoria, or the wonderfully nostalgic “Palace on Wheels” in Rajasthan; while the many extraordinary feats of engineering described include the Trans-Siberian Railway from Moscow to Vladivostock, the Trans-Ancline Railway in Chile with its 26 tunnels in 70 km (44 miles), and the Brazilian line from Santos where the carriages are still hoisted up the Serro do Mar on a rope. For lovers of the latest and fastest trains, there is the high-speed line from Tokyo to Osaka, or London to Bern by Furostar and TGV — while on many other journeys the trains are still hauled, on gauges broad and narrow, by lovingly preserved steam locomotives.

Long or short, modern or historic, broad-gauge or narrow, each of the journeys described in Great Railway Journeys of the World will whet the appetites of rail enthusiasts everywhere. Packed with information — historical, geographical and technical — and with over 700 photographs of the world’s most remarkable trains, and stunning scenery, this monumental book bears eloquent witness to the enduring romance of rail travel.”

The Management of Change in Universities: Universities, State and Economy in Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom by Henry D. R. Miller (£18.00)Publisher: The Society for Research into Higher Education & Open University Press — 1994Binding: Hardback First Edition. [ISBN: 0335190898]Condition: Good. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding. Scattered researcher's highlighting throughout. Description: From the cover: “This book presents an account of the management of changes in universities new and old in Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom. Recent developments in the system of higher education are described, with particular reference to the change from a binary to a unified system in Australia and the United Kingdom. Changes in states and economies during the 1980s and 1990s are examined in terms of their effects on universities and their management. The interviews — one hundred across twenty universities — with academic managers and staff representatives across Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom provide the basis for an analysis of how change is being managed. Henry Miller points out that managerialism and the language and methods of the market are permeating the structure and culture of universities and that this raises questions about what are and should be the purposes of universities and how they should be governed..”Notes: Size: 9¼" x 6¼". Nature of Australia: A Portrait of the Island Continent by John Vandenbeld (£16.50)Publisher: Collins Australia — 1988Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0732200032]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: 2nd printing. [First Published: 1988] Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “The earliest explorers of Australia felt themselves to be in an alien world of bizarre animals and strange plants, a land left behind by time. That sense of strangeness pervades the perception of Australia to the present day. Much of its life — and the way it is lived — is unique, but there’s also a new understanding of Australia’s origins and its links with the rest of the natural world.

Based on the acclaimed television series, the book brings together new discoveries and insights into a comprehensive and fascinating account of how the island continent came to be the way it is, the making of its dramatic landscapes, and the origins and evolution of its marvellous plants and animals.

Nature of Australia traces the rise of those most extraordinary mammals, the marsupials, from their beginnings in the primeval forests of the Americas to their triumphant radiation in Australia; it tells the story of the rich and varied seas, from the storm-tossed kelp forests of the south to the marvels of the Great Barrier Reef; it follows the great climatic changes that turned the continent from a lush land of plenty into a parched place of drought and fire which forged ingenious ways of survival; and it reveals the impact of human immigrants on the continent and its creatures: first the Aborigines and their firesticks, then, in the last 200 years, Europeans and their technology.

Douglas Jardine: Spartan Cricketer by Christopher Douglas (£15.50)Publisher: Methuen — 2002Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0413772160]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Pages very gently age-tanned otherwise a very well presented copy.Description: First in this edition. [First: Allen & Unwin, 1984] Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “The explosive impact of the 1932-33 MCC tour of Australia sent shockwaves through world cricket with captain Douglas Jardine’s use of intimidating and, some said, unsportsmanlike ‘bodyline’ tactics against Bradman and the all-conquering Australians. Reactions ranged from embarrassment to outrage, and Jardine himself was dogged ever after by his part in the controversy. One of the most successful England captains of all time, he nevertheless became the scapegoat for the bodyline furore, and was ostracised by the English authorities. Contemptuous of his critics, he soon left the Test match arena to pursue relatively unfulfilling careers in business and journalism. He died at an early age in 1958, having never assumed the role of influence within the game for which his abilities so amply equipped him.

History has not been kind to Jardine. Both Australian and English commentators were keen to see him as the villain of the piece, an inflexible, arrogant character whose bad judgement brought the game of cricket and Anglo-Australian relations to near collapse. But the real Douglas Jardine was a much more complex, intelligent and sensitive personality: a man, as John Arlott described him, of ‘cool mind, utter honesty, unflinching courage and unwavering purpose’. Born shortly before the death of Queen Victoria, raised in the atmosphere of the British Raj, he learned his cricket at Winchester and Oxford but played it — at the highest level — as the game was becoming ever more commercial, mass-market entertainment. In this new, revised edition of Douglas Jardine — Spartan Cricketer, Christopher Douglas explores the contradictions in the life of this troubled figure upright idealist and dry humorist, meticulous sportsman and stigmatised wrongdoer — and restores him to his proper place in English cricket history.”

Men Are Stupid, Women Are Crazy by Peter Ruehl (£15.50)Publisher: Melbourne University Press — 2011Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0522861121]Condition: Very Good. Single reading crease to the spine. Leans slightly. Light crease to the join of the upper wrapper. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: From the cover: “Peter Ruehl’s humorous columns on life, family and politics have been one of the Australian Financial Review’s most beloved and prominent features for more than two decades. His irreverent wit and ability to puncture pretentiousness with a well-turned phrase gave thousands of dedicated readers a good reason to read the paper back to front on the days the column appeared. His descriptions of growing up with teenage children are laugh-out-loud funny (well, for parents), and a younger generation of readers decided he was cool, with his constant satirical references to their music and dress and approach to life. Politicians sometimes winced, but knew his hilarious descriptions of what was really going on in Canberra resonated more loudly than any press release. Peter Ruehl never lost his distinctive American style but he was able to understand Australian culture and to write about his views in a passionately funny and deeply personal way.”Notes: Size: Trade Paperback (9¼" x 6"). Air War Iraq by Tim Ripley (£14.50)Publisher: Pen & Sword — 2004Binding: Paperback First Edition. [ISBN: 1844150690]Condition: Near Fine.Description: The three-week-long assault on Iraq in March and April 2003 was the culmination of well over a year's worth of preparation. This book looks at how US, British and Australian air commanders pulled together their plans and executed them to overwhelm Iraq's defences. This book tells the story of the build-up and the war from the perspective of the US, British and Australian airmen. Unfortunately little has emerged to date from Iraq's airmen and air defence troops, so their story can only be told in part. This is not an account of why America, Britain and Australia went to war against Iraq. That story is for others to tell. 144pp. Size: 4to Crown (9¾" x 7½")

Extraordinary Railway Journeys by Tom Savio & Anthony Lambert (£14.50)Publisher: Ted Smart — 2004Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1843309335]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs; Maps;

From the cover: “What makes a rail tour extraordinary? Is it the countryside, unique people and places along the way, a colourful or turbulent history, select carriage interiors and the ultimate in comfort, or the noble patina bestowed by a succession of distinguished passengers?

The answer is all that and more, and each of the 24 journeys in this book contains liberal doses of these magic ingredients. One common factor unites them: the romance and allure of this incomparable mode of travel, which grants modern-day explorers an increasingly rare commodity — time. On a train one has time to absorb the passing scenery, and an opportunity to socialize with other travellers or spend reflective moments in solitude.

Stories about trains as diverse as Pakistan’s Bolan Mail and Australia’s Savannahlander, the Cornish Riviera Express and the California Zephyr convey the authors’ passion for the lines, locomotives and carriages, and their deep respect for the men who planned and built them, often under harrowing circumstances. Hand-drawn maps, evocative images and the captivating first-hand narrative of knowledgeable travel and railway writers combine to present unique experiences that carry readers from the Arctic Circle to the heat of India. Extraordinary Railway Journeys is an entertaining collection of adventures, all of which can be re-enacted today (contact details and booking information are listed at the back of the book).”

An Unfinished Autobiography; With Contributions By His Friends by Gilbert Murray (£13.00)Publisher: George Allen & Unwin — 1960Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and slightly faded. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Portrait to the frontispiece;

From the cover: “When Gilbert Murray died in 1957, England lost its most famous Greek scholar; his 91 years had spanned and influenced a whole epoch of our cultural life, while his manifold interests, his contribution to the cause of international peace and intellectual co-operation, established him as one of the most impressive public figures of our time. His friendships were very wide and he was in contact with very many of his great contemporaries.

He left behind him this autobiographical fragment of astonishing charm, which tells of his boyhood in Australia in the mid-nineteenth century, of his life as an undergraduate at Oxford and of his early teaching days. To this have been added some Notes (Jean Smith) from his correspondence now in the Bodleian Library carrying the outline to 1957; and contributions to supplement the story of his life: The Teacher of Greek (Isobel Henderson), The Theatre and Gilbert Murray (Sybil Thorndike and Lewis Casson), Gilbert Murray and the League of Nations (Salvador de Madariaga), followed by Murray’s own account of the Committee for Intellectual Co-operation, and Bertrand Russell’s memories of A Fifty-Six Year Friendship. Two samples of Gilbert Murray’s Greek composition are appended.”

Ashes in the Mouth: The Story of the Bodyline Tour of 1932-33 by Ronald Mason (£13.00)Publisher: The Hambledon Press — 1982Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0907628311]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently faded at the spine of the dust wrapper, a little rubbed at the edges. Price Clipped. Leans slightly. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black and White Photographs;

From the cover: “The Bodyline Tour to Australia in 1932-33 has a strong claim to have been the most dramatic Test series in the History of Cricket. England under the ruthless captaincy of Douglas Jardine and including Herbert Sutcliffe and Wally Hammond in their number, brought one of the greatest of all fast bowlers, Harold Larwood, to try and contain the most prolific batsman the game has ever known, Donald Bradman, by bowling leg theory or Bodyline. The harsh choice facing the Australian players, ringed on the leg side by fielders, was to play the ball and risk being caught or to leave it and risk it bowling or hitting them. The Third Test at Adelaide and the injuries caused there to Woodfull and Oldfield shook the cricketing world and threatened English-Australian relations. Jardine’s plan achieved its aim: Bradman was contained and England won the series — but at a cost that is still debated.

Ronald Mason, whose previous books have won him a high reputation amongst cricket writers and include biographies of Hobbs and Hammond, has used the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the tour to give a judicious and balanced account of what actually happened: why Bodyline was adopted; what it involved in practice; its impact at the time; and whether it can now be justified. This is a thrilling story splendidly told.”

The Khrushchev Pattern by Frank Gibney (£13.00)Publisher: Prentice-Hall International — 1961Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with some very small nicks. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned.Description: From the cover: “DURING THE HALF DECADE between 1955 and 1960, men watched with dreadful fascination the uncoiling of the Khrushchev Pattern, one of the most startling switches in the history of international politics, and one of the cleverest. The leader of the Soviet Union, Nikita Khrushchev, used his power to swing his country and the entire Communist movement along a path of “competitive coexistence” that seemed to challenge not only the tactics of Stalin’s past rule but the very premises of the Communist system. Frank Gibney shows how successfully this new tactic operated with the world’s Communist parties and their sympathizers—in the widest variety of circumstances. In some areas it posed great problems for Khrushchev, because its surface friendliness and emphasis on a Popular Front approach threatened the historic unity of Communist discipline. At moments, as in the Hungarian revolt of 1956, the entire approach had to be sacrificed to the ruthless needs of Soviet power politics. But by and large Khrushchev’s “soft sell” version of Communism proved a far more formidable menace to the Free World than Stalin’s rigid line. Although the emphasis in his policy became openly aggressive after the U-2 incident and Khrushchev’s Summit breakup in the spring of 1960, the gains made by the Khrushchev Pattern were substantial. In a world where so many of the new, uncommitted nations appeared so ready to play off East against West, the superficially reasonable Khrushchev Pattern was surely as terrible a threat as Stalin’s more obvious aggression.”Notes: Jacket designed by Robert Jonas. The Tower and the Glory by Wade Dooley with Gerry Greenberg (£13.00)Publisher: Mainstream — 1992Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1851584617]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper. Text complete, clean and tight, but the colour plates have caused a slight undulation to the leaves. A nice copy all the same. Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “FEW men have played a bigger role in England’s glorious Rugby Union renaissance than Wade Dooley, the 6ft 5in policeman they call the Blackpool Tower.

The giant lock’s unique ball-winning talents helped to lay the platform tor Will Carling’s record-breakers as they stormed to the World Cup Final and back-to-back Grand Slams in 1991 and 1992.

In his autobiography, Big Wade relives his colourful and sometimes controversial career which culminated in a fairytale 50th and final appearance when he led England out for the game that clinched the historic second Slam — and celebrated by scoring only the third try of his Test career!

Yet when he was plucked from obscurity in 1985 to solve an England injury crisis, the scenario could not have been more different. A junior player at Preston Grasshoppers, he was plunged into a side which lost more games than it won.

Wade took his chance with both hands and went on to clean out the world’s top lineout aces in a glittering career that spanned four continents and a triumphant British Lions tour to Australia in 1989.

With his success came England success. In Wade’s case it was all the more remarkable because, unlike his peers, he consistently had to bridge the gap between Fourth Division and international rugby. His big-match preparation was also unique, from training alone on the beaches and sand-dunes around Blackpool to locking himself away from his team-mates immediately before every match in a unique self-motivation exercise.

With the highs and lows there were also a handful of controversial incidents which earned Wade a reputation in some quarters as a man of violence. Anyone who knows him personally knows that to be demonstrably untrue; and his true character was probably best summed up in a special tribute from his great pal Paul Ackford published in The Observer six days before Wade’s final England game. The article is re-published in its entirety in this book.”

A Life to Remember by William MacQuitty (£12.50)Publisher: Quartet — 1991Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0704327899]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the head of the lower panel. Pages lightly age-tanned.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “An ant trapped in a block of amber, a brass Vishnu, an ivory Buddha, a blue faience Osiris — these were the emblems William MacQuitty discovered as a boy in an old deed-box in his parents’ house in Bangor, Northern Ireland. He vowed he would never be caught like the ant.

He became, as his old headmaster put it, ‘a luxury tramp’, a merchant banker of the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China. Posted to Amritsar in 1926, he surveyed the twilight of the Raj with the sceptical eye of an Ulsterman. He became a member of the Auxiliary Punjab Light Horse, took up yoga and scandalized the memsahibs by consorting with natives. He encountered a haunting in a forest; met a sadhu (holy man) whose destiny seemed mysteriously linked with his own; entered into his first passionate romance with Kim, a beautiful Anglo-Indian girl; and witnessed the appalling Cawnpore massacre of 1931.

On the eve of the Second World War, amid the horrors of Shanghai under Japanese occupation, he resigned from the bank to be with his dying mother in Ireland. A new career in film production led to his making many important British documentaries and features of the 1940s and 1950s, from Out of Chaos, a film about the work of the war artists, to A Night to Remember, the first film to tell the authentic story of the sinking of the Titanic, a ship he had watched being launched in 1911. In 1959 he founded Ulster Television, one of the most successful of commercial television stations. Not long afterwards, his alternative though unadopted plan for preserving Abu Simbel after the building of the Aswan High Dam started him on yet another career as the writer-photographer of fifteen books.

A Life to Remember offers vivid glimpses of such friends as the unorthodox psychiatrist Wilhelm Stekel, the painter Stanley Spencer and the entertainer Beatrice Lillie; and of such legendary figures as the Dalai Lama and the Shah of Persia. With its richness of anecdote, humour and insight, it is one of the warmest and most entertaining books of personal memoirs to be published in recent years.”

Anyone for Cricket?: A Diary of an Australian Tour by Bob Taylor; David Gower; (£12.50)Publisher: Pelham — 1979Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0720711967]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the edges. Leans slightly. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned and slightly brittle.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “This book is the first of its kind. Never before have two cricketers in the same team kept separate diaries of an England tour in Australia — and with a gap of seventeen years between them, the views of Bob Taylor and David Gower are fascinatingly diverse. Aided by BBC journalist Patrick Murphy, the players describe the daily events of England’s triumphant visit. But “Anyone for Cricket?” is not just about the game, although England’s most exciting young batsman and the world’s number one wicketkeeper reveal stimulating insights into the sport. It’s also about Australia as a continent, the people, the way of life and the pressures a touring side has to face. This is a really absorbing account of the nature of the overseas tour.”Notes: Size: 8¾" x 5¾". Blue boards with Gilt titling to the Spine. 176 pages.
